    Thanks for your video, I prefer the D4, and the MD421. The D6 may sound more flattering, but I use it more on a bass drum and in well-defined styles of music. The sound rendering is more realistic with its two microphones.

    I've never heard a 421 sound good on anything ever... the trend continues. My favs are the D6 and the 902. I'd have to hear them both in a mix to see if the 902 is a little too plastic-y or not. I currently use a D6 on all my toms and they crush. Thank you for showing us the Beta 98. I was considering trying them out. They sound horrible.

    Its amazing how many things sound absolutely fantastic with a 57. I own too many to shake a stick at and honestly if i cant think of anything that sounds good and dont feel like tweaking much, i just throw a 57 on it and bam done. I do really like the sound of the D6 and the 421. I always put 421s top and bottom on my low toms and rack toms if i have them available, but one trick i love for rack toms if i don't have 421s is to put Audio Technica Pro 37s on them. They honestly dont sound too good on much else, but sound fantastic on rack toms!

      It's fequency response looks similar to the eq that a lot of sound engineers would apply to a typical floor tom, so it sounds almost "processed" .. a bit to much scooping for my taste, but it sure makes an easy good tone straight out of the box! Fantastic sound, but i would prefere the D4 as i like to keep a lot of options after recording ;)

    I was pleasantly surprised by the Audix D4. Was saving up for a Sennheiser MD421-II, for dual use on bass/floor tom, but I think that can wait until later. I think I slightly preferred the D4 and it's less than half the price, and more practical (not so large, hypercardiod I think - plus I hear MD421 has not very reliable mount hardware). So ... I just bought an Audix D4. I think they are decent as bass cab close mics too. Trying to find some demoes of it on bass ...

    Great comparison, thank you. My question is, if you take the frequency response from a mic like the SM-57 (which seems to reproduce the same low tone, just more subdued in comparison to the D6, for example) and EQ it, can you get a sound comparable to those mics specialized for bass response?
    I would bet you can

    The E902 kind of achieves the sound out of the box that some of us end up with after scooping out all the mids from an E602 or a 57 - problem with that is you don't really have the option of adding some of those missing frequencies. So... would it be better using a 57 or similar and then eq'ing to taste?

    • @TheRealCowlick
      @TheRealCowlick 6 месяцев назад +1

      I mean it is a heavily stylized microphone. Seems like something that would be very niche to genres like metal, etc. I could see it not working for most types of recordings and you needing to compensate with heavy EQing where as in that case, I believe that is a bad thing.

    I can't imagine that any drummer would choose anything different then the D6 and the e902. Both great mics for bass drums as well!! And if I want to get anything out of my floor toms it's that growling low ends which these supply (unless you're a jazzdrummer with high tunings). Only thing I notice for the e902 now on floor tom is that it seems to have a "slapping" sound on the attack of the stick hitting the head. With the D6 that seems what more muted or filtered so on floor this would be my choice...!!! And actually....I have a D6 inside my bass with a Kelly shu but noticed that it performs perfectly just entering the porthole for giving that extra boomy low end. However...It looses a lot of it when placed more to the beater (with the Kelly Shu) so I was thinking of placing a e902 on the Kelly Shu and use the D6 for my (Star Walnut) 16". After seeing this video I'm sure of it. Thanks for the test!!!!

    I don't think mics can can good or bad or describe via high, mid, low in modern times when everyone have access to unlimited bands of parametric EQ. I am now facing the facts about music production. Recording the drum now a days is about which mic lends on the modern side and which on the vintage side. E904 is the most 'modern' and SM 57 sound right in middle. That's because people are still using it today to get fresh sounds.
    Sound is a fashion much like clothing. In the old day, musicians are models (muscians) going to a clothing store (recording studio) and get themselves a dress that speaks. Now, digital work station occured and everyone make their own dress.

    why do you all prefer the Audixies? ... this is just stupid guys.. sorry. They are so scooped, so when someone hits the cymbal (ride or crash) it will blow your speakers with epicall harshness!!! Choose a opensounded, decent bassy mic, and you can scoop out the mids any time. But not these mics, which totally destroys your mix. Yep, you can use audix, sennheiser on kick, where is minimum bleed of cymbals, snare etc, but not on toms. So the sm57 or beta 56 or beta 98 all the way!!! (and I am not working for shure ;) !! )
