V Beats and V7X are the same capsule btw so clamp bleed aside, use them interchangeabley. I love my sE8s and my old sE1As but I've heard people do amazing things with sE7s so now would like a pair. Would be great in a venue where you don't need the top end so much.
AWESOME VIDEO!!! I have never seen anyone do a video, while showcasing the different sounds you get from the different mic angles and proximity!! That is seriously helpful on how to know exactly where to set the mics to trigger the sweet spot!!!!
Only thing I wish was included in this was a comparison of mic bleed, especially Hi-Hat bleed and including a SM57 as reference. Aside from that, great review, really enjoyed the mic placement demonstrations.
This is the second time I realized a hype over drum mics. A few years ago suddenly every big youtube drummer started using earthworks microphones. And now its these mics ;-) I really dig the EQ options of the kick mic and also the low profile of the v-beats. Great mics and great review!
Man, when EV stopped making the N/D767a I was so disappointed (but I still have my one and only available if needed). When I started looking for mics for our band I came across the sE V7. I now have them in our practice room and on the band trailer. The supercardiod pattern along with proper gain staging lead to a super nice signal without much bleeding (very minimal to no gate needed). Nice demo and singing. Have a blast! Now I want their drum mics 😋
Cymbals sound more or less the same to me with SE7 and SE8, but everything else sounds better and more refined and clear with SE8. Seems like an excellent kit! A good competitor for Audix.
Cool, subbed! one critical detail tho..off axis rejection..i hear they're pretty good in this aspect, possibly down to a tight cardioid and SPL response. Really dig the kick drum mic, tho I'm still on the fence with the AKG D12VR, tried one, an active beast!
I realised I more demonstrated it than explained it🤦🏼♂️ But it’s remarkable the difference isn’t it? I will do another, short video on the subject properly soon 🙂
Surprised you are not using a bass drums best friend, an Evan bass drum pad with a hinged portion that comes off the batter head when you hit the bass drum. Greatest affordable drum hack on the market.
Hey Ed just curious are you still using sE drum mics? I'm looking to finish up my sE drum mic locker, so I can start recording drums properly. Always enjoy your videos. Thank you
I'll be honest, I'm using the Lewitt BeatKit Pro set atm with an Audix D6 on kick and JZ BT202/BB29s as overheads. The SEs are brilliant and I use them live.
@@EdThorne thank you for your honesty and I watched your video the other day on the JZ mics. Lewitt seems to be taking over the microphone world lately 😉 keep the videos coming brother.
Kick D6 + a 47 of some kind (currently use the JZ V47), toms Lewitt’s, snare Josephson e22, hats I like the SE Dynacaster, overheads I love the JZ BB29s, rooms I’d like a tube mic of some kind. Just demod the Warm Audio CX12s and they sounded great!
Well done.....I learned a lot watching you get the best tone. I'll hop on over to get the Tom Mics...I have the SE8s and they are very very good. I'll go through your link.
I really like the sound of the kit through those mics. I almost fell off my couch when you said swap out the player, because of bad recordings lololol. I do not know how to mic drums as I do not have the capacity to accommodate them, but I learned a lot from watching this video. Many thanks. Cheers
they are good mics.. just remember that v-beat and v7x are the same sound wise. 100%. Same capsule and electronics. So if you like to save 50% on the tom mics, and have space for the larger body, then just buy v7x for toms.
Same capsule but I believe they've been set-up differently to cater for higher SPL levels, which creates a slightly different sound. I haven't A/B'd them though.
I love Audix mics (use the D6 all the time) but the goose-neck D-clamps are terrible (they come loose after a few uses and sag onto the drum). The SEs are very well-designed!!!
@@EdThorne @EdThorne i don't know the pricing as of now sir, how much is the price difference for both of them. Audix dp7, Sennheiser e600 series, and in this video the SE. So many options right now with the technology evolving. And these 3 brands are my top of the list for now when it comes to drum mics. Maybe i should go for the audix or sennheiser bass drum mics, and the rest is just the option of what is cheaper of the three, coz they are almost the same on the upper kit like toms etc, except for that bass drum, the d6 and e602 is i prefer. Thanks.
Good question. The Audix mics sound great but the D-clamp goose neck clicks suck! D6 over any kick mic ever! Rest is a matter of taste. I would compare them but someone stole my Audix mics…
Overpriced Chinese product. Have seen them fail on people in live sound time and time again. Go buy a few se v7s and they’ll all sound different. Pray sweat doesn’t get into them. Moneys better spent on industry standards that’ll stand the test of time. It’s the flavour of the month just like Audix was, just like Heil was, etc. An sm57 is the most ubiquitous mic of all time. These are a fad that were cheap and have now gone up in price.

the un processed sounded so good. great job showing off these mics
It's never occurred to me that the angle of a tom mic would impact the amount of overtones and attack getting picked up. Thank you for that!
It’s remarkable isn’t it. Positioning is everything!

Great review/demo Ed. Loved the "action" demonstration of the different mic placements!
Thanks, Martin! It’s amazing how much difference the angle and proximity makes.

Thanks. Do you know what? I did try that but it was fiddly and the video got long enough so I canned the idea…
Would have been nice to hear the tom's in the "7's" overhead and full mix!
I learned a lot about recording and different dynamics based on mic placement. I understand why some VSTs have a microphone set up. Thanks you!
Yeh, it’s a fundamental part of the sound. Well worth experimenting with.
I think they’re the best mics for drums right now , audix close second
Yes! Those Audix’s are tasty. The goose clamps suck though! (They become loose after several uses)

GREAT video. Loved the review of the mics but the mic placement examples are amazing. Thank you for the detail.
SE BL8 is also a great kick-in mic
Cymbals sound more or less the same to me with SE7 and SE8, but everything else sounds better and more refined and clear with SE8. Seems like an excellent kit! A good competitor for Audix.
Better clarity all round with the SE8s. They’re good mics.
best review video ive ever seen! simple, quick and can perceive perfectly sutile differences between positions
Thanks, Omar. Hopefully it was helpful.

Thanks for explaining Microphone technique Nice and crisp :)

Thank you!
Great review and heaps of useful tips in there too! Thanks for helping make decisions man
Thanks, and you’re welcome. I’m genuinely VERY impressed with these mics!
@@EdThorne will have to sort myself out with a pack 🤘
Been rocking SE7’s for Tom. Mics….. man!!!
All the tone!
Ace work Ed!
Thanks, buddy. 🤘
How is there that much noise in the signal? Is that from the mic? Surely not at that high of an SPL. That's a bit worrying. @6:35
I don’t know where this noise came from, probably something silly in editing. The mics are not noisy at all!
Great review, good job!
have the se8 pair. best OH mics ever!
Yeh, they’re very detailed and quick transient response.
@@EdThorne I like how smooth they are on the cymbals without sounding dark.

How is this compare to the new earthworks drum mics?
They sound very good in all areas of the drum set. And you don't need a 2nd mortgage to afford the damn things. lol

Between these and the Audix dp7 which one would you go for
The Audix’s sound great, too, but the gooseneck D-Clamps are terrible and sag over time/with drums moving. The SEs are SOLID!
