With that grill not a chance of buying one. I would be violently sick every time I saw the car and realised I owned it. The second gen 1 Series this replaces had terrible build quality. Mine was forever going back to the dealer for mechanical repairs. Add to that the awful interior build quality with bits coming off in my hands. Many years ago I owned an Alfa 164 3.0 V6 and that was far better built than the BMW. So I am pleased the new one is better, but it will be years before I trust BMW again. In this age of face masks, please, please, please, anyone that buys one of these stupid grill BMW, Audi, Mercedes, please cover the grill with a face mask. Otherwise you will be regularly having to clean your car for the number of people being violently sick on them.

What theyve done here is making it taller, deform the front by overly angle`ing the headlights (designers most likely thought it looked more "aggressive", when in reality it just looks deformed), slap a huge ass grille on it that makes absolutely no sense, ruin all the lines from the predecessor that actually made sense (its no lines in this new 1 series that makes sense and lines up with other lines, literally none) and direct copy the rear of the Lexus CT200h... Its no inspiration in this cars design at all... Then they made it even worse by removing the biggest selling point of this car, RWD. I find it staggering that this as well as many other BMW models made it thru the concept stage... It just looks so bad....
@@latlak I think people are WAY overreacting on the MK8 Golf styling TBH. Don't get me wrong, I still prefer the more aggressive looks of the Mk6/Mk7, but it's nowhere near as bad looking as the new 1 Series.

maybe it's the country or something, but when you see so many bmws on the streets everyday, you actually get used to them and like them. for example the new 1 series actually looks super aggressive in the night with those headlights. whenever I see a hyundai, its just meaningless, i dont even recognize it. but thats even its image here, just a car to get from a to b

I'd buy this because the interior is more my taste. However, the exterior prevents me from that. But if it was RWD, I'd still buy it. So yeah, they ruined this car. Not even soccer mom's want this, women like Mercedes more.
Wanted the new 1st series even with the FWD. The main advantage vs competition is the quality of interior materials which is great overall. In comparison Audi A3 and Mercedes A class are really cheating in places like doors and lower dash. But then the good news ends. First the engine, I needed to be a petrol due to high BIK for diesels. There is too much gap between the boring 118i 140hp and top range M135. There is a need for an in between 120i, and for me the difference to the car I choose ( 182hp) mattered. But the biggest problem with the 1st series is the price. Firstly you need the M sport trim to be nice. Then the desirable options are not available outside of very,very expensive packages, there is almost no option available on its own. As a result the price for a nice spec BMW 118i M sport was....prepare to sit down 39K!!! No way to pay that for a regular hatchback , maybe a high performance but not on earth for a 118i

I’ve had one of these cars for nearly 2 months now, it’s a nice car to drive, averaging 53 mpg, it’s quiet and refined. But definitely not as much fun to drive as my old one series. I like everything about the car except one thing, it’s so dam ugly.

Tech wise and design wise this car is one generation ahead frm F20, drive it first and then form an opinion would be the wiser thing to do.
Well the new m135i is worse than the previous m140i. But M2 Competition is in a totally different level. It is the closest a modern beemer can get to an old BMW M car

When I saw that car live I thought it was a Fiat Tipo and then I saw the badge. This BMW is no longer special in any way. Now the Tipo is a better purchase, it is cheaper
The thing that made it great was the 50/50 weight distribution. Now I read somewhere that the new m135i is 60/40 to the front as it’s now based on a FWD. they ruined the classic BMW handling

Love all the people complaining about it not being RWD and probably haven’t driven them both. I have driven both and the reality is new one drives much better, much more taught, better turn in, more nimble. Better range of engines in the old one though…

Pay another extra £10,000 to get all the bits that should come as standard. At that point, you may as well buy the 3 series... and then pay another £15,000 to get all the extras for that car as well. It's at that point you think to yourself, I may as well just buy the Mazda 3. Tee hee heee.
So glad I got a 120i 3 years ago. No more RWD, no more “affordable” 4 cyl petrol, and nothing unique in its design. The biggest drawback of my F20 are some quality issues, some parts of the interior tend to be squeaky, hopefully they improved that in F40. Anyway, it’s a great car and there’s no way I’d replace it with that thing.
had it for a rental for 24 hrs, put about 120 km on it in middle & rural tokyo. Ride was choppy and the auto dual clutch at low speeds is an absolute disgrace (hurking/jerking/lurching, doesn't interact w/ the brakes well at all) especially combined w/ the auto start/stop. I have no idea why all these auto "journalists" give a free pass for shitty euro cars when they shit on say, asian brand cars with the most minute imperfections.
That's one ugly ass car. It's supposed to be a bit smaller nimble car. And front wheel drive? What are they smoking at BMW? No.. just no. Ugly front, engine sideways, fwd, wayyyy too expensive.
As a long time BMW fan and ex e46 M3 owner I think I might be done with the brand. The design is just all wrong, a complete mess on the exterior. How can a brand with so many stunning cars from the past keep getting it so wrong. There is nothing in the current BMW line-up that is appealing. Just my opinion of course.

Yea, and i mean if you want the more comfort and space of the new one, you get something else, like Audi A3 or a Golf, or even the Mazda3 which is personally looks way better than most of the competition (including the more "luxurious" competition) but still give the comfort and it have a real nice interior.

I'd buy this because the interior is more my taste. However, the exterior prevents me from that. But if it was RWD, I'd still buy it. So yeah, they ruined this car. Not even soccer mom's want this, women like Mercedes more.
This 1 Series is the biggest fail in BMW history
I think they wanted to get an overall practical product which many buyers, possibly the majority, would be looking for.
Wanted the new 1st series even with the FWD.
The main advantage vs competition is the quality of interior materials which is great overall. In comparison Audi A3 and Mercedes A class are really cheating in places like doors and lower dash.
But then the good news ends.
First the engine, I needed to be a petrol due to high BIK for diesels.
There is too much gap between the boring 118i 140hp and top range M135. There is a need for an in between 120i, and for me the difference to the car I choose ( 182hp) mattered.
But the biggest problem with the 1st series is the price. Firstly you need the M sport trim to be nice. Then the desirable options are not available outside of very,very expensive packages, there is almost no option available on its own.
As a result the price for a nice spec BMW 118i M sport was....prepare to sit down 39K!!!
No way to pay that for a regular hatchback , maybe a high performance but not on earth for a 118i

bmw’s new designers have no idea what they’re doing with the front and side profile of their car, all their recent cars are hideous, apart from the new 8 series.
The 8 is not bad looking, but it's certainly not good looking either. Considering the price, it might as well be hideous.
Wanna know the worst part? The dude behind this whole mess is the dude thats been the BMW M- division lead designer for years. He recently got promoted or some shit, so now he is the BMW lead designer. As soon as he took the lead of the whole BMW design team, he completely ruined them all.

I’ve had one of these cars for nearly 2 months now, it’s a nice car to drive, averaging 53 mpg, it’s quiet and refined. But definitely not as much fun to drive as my old one series. I like everything about the car except one thing, it’s so dam ugly.

that's not truth. the build quality of A-class is really awful. Two wide screen present looks great, but as an owner driver everywhere even your touch area Benz used cheap plastic really disapointed.

90% of them have driven neither model,
99% of them have no clue how RWD is driven, or the physics behind, completely oblivious thst at these power outputs it makes no difference, no power drift, only lift-off oversteer, as with any FWD
100% of them are oblivious that at 140 bhp with all that power loss that the RWD powertrain has, makes the FWD version faster.
Tech wise and design wise this car is one generation ahead frm F20, drive it first and then form an opinion would be the wiser thing to do.
Never thought I would say this but sadly VW, Audi have lost their way...

The 6 cylinder M135i/M140i were the best decisions brought to the 1 series
The thing that made it great was the 50/50 weight distribution. Now I read somewhere that the new m135i is 60/40 to the front as it’s now based on a FWD. they ruined the classic BMW handling

Imagine this happen with u in 3 cylinder it will be even worse ( manufacturers start putting money mostly at the intérieur ) some st the exterior and nothing for the engine ( 308 ,focus , ) can be faster than this shit honestly BMW can't be with 3 cylinder it's a BMW ,this I don't compare it to an A class or A3 .

Love all the people complaining about it not being RWD and probably haven’t driven them both. I have driven both and the reality is new one drives much better, much more taught, better turn in, more nimble. Better range of engines in the old one though…

So glad I got a 120i 3 years ago. No more RWD, no more “affordable” 4 cyl petrol, and nothing unique in its design. The biggest drawback of my F20 are some quality issues, some parts of the interior tend to be squeaky, hopefully they improved that in F40. Anyway, it’s a great car and there’s no way I’d replace it with that thing.
had it for a rental for 24 hrs, put about 120 km on it in middle & rural tokyo. Ride was choppy and the auto dual clutch at low speeds is an absolute disgrace (hurking/jerking/lurching, doesn't interact w/ the brakes well at all) especially combined w/ the auto start/stop. I have no idea why all these auto "journalists" give a free pass for shitty euro cars when they shit on say, asian brand cars with the most minute imperfections.
That's one ugly ass car. It's supposed to be a bit smaller nimble car. And front wheel drive? What are they smoking at BMW? No.. just no.

As a long time BMW fan and ex e46 M3 owner I think I might be done with the brand. The design is just all wrong, a complete mess on the exterior. How can a brand with so many stunning cars from the past keep getting it so wrong. There is nothing in the current BMW line-up that is appealing. Just my opinion of course.
Agreed, there are still some gems like the 340i and m5.
I have to admit the new BMW grill has grown on me as I’ve seen more on the road. I wasn’t a fan to start with. We will have to rename you Kevin after that teenager strop with the parcel shelf 😂. The big question I have. Does it handle as well as a Ford Focus on a twisty road?
