In 2018 you could get a brand new (not pre-reg) M140i shadow line for £28k manual or £29.5k auto. They were even offering it on a deal of £500 down and £500 per month - though I forget what the mileage and years were on that. Ticking all the good options got it to around £32.5k and if you went mad you could get it to around £38k. Rwd, 340hp and 1450kg. Now its front based 4wd, 300hp and 1625kg. For at least £45k and you need to tick expensive boxes just to get what really should be standard on anything with an M badge - M stitching for example. A very average spec on this wil be over £50k and for that you're getting an emissions strangled version of an engine thats been around since what - 2014? - in a chassis thats still based around a Mini chassis from about 2012. My last small BMW was an M135i but the 6-pot version. I almost took one of those M140i shadow lines home but it wasn't a big enough jump up for me at the time so passed on it. I'm yet to see any other small BMW that I want. As a massive VW/Audi fanboy, I never thought we'd see the day where a Golf was considered a better drivers car than a 1 Series. BMW have somehow managed to completely dilute the performance brand down to the point where it's barely discernable from the garden variety models. They started off by turning the base models into FWD and now the M135 is just an expensive GTI-esque model. It's sad because I loved the rivalry with the different marques as the Golf R was always the car that did fast things, and the M135/140 did the turning things and there'd be big arguments about what's more important. I really hope there's an M140(i) that makes up for this shit show.
"As a massive VW/Audi fanboy, I never thought we'd see the day where a Golf was considered a better drivers car than a 1 Series." That day was 5 years ago already when the F20 went out of production.
@@MadDaCube The F20 fucking off didn't automatically make the Golf better. I had a 2020 Mk7.5 R that I tuned to over 500hp but it wasn't the same game as an N55 M135i with similar power on twisties. I'd fuck it on anything remotely traction based but the N55 was a far more engaging car to play with. The Mk8/8.5R was the turning point for Golf power:driver ratio. The new rear diff really transformed the car but hearing the motoring press agree is something as I always attributed my thoughts to brand bias. It's just a terrible shame that this will be the last ICE Golf to turn up for the game and now we're all going electric based. Better late than never, I suppose.

@@dlevi67what are you on about? Its EU regulations nothing to do with the UK. Labour will be gone soon and Farage will be next PM so what this mob do now is irrelevant
yeah, BMW obviously used touch sensitive buttons, because it's cheaper, but wanted to keep the tactility, so made the entire panel a mechanical button. It's quite common these days (VW) and it's terrible. What makes it even more terrible is the fact that even though manufacturers are finding more and more ways to make things cheaper, the cars get more expensive with every generation. This is why EU car manufacturers are dying, there's just no added value for the extra price.
So you need to buy a 'pack' for £3k to get a stiffer chassis and suspension and better brakes? When you buy an M car you think you would get all that anyway! Same engine they use in all their other cars too, so whats the point of just paying for a badge? just buy a 120i, map it, and stick an M badge on it yourself. Its pretty much the same car
If it was a KIA; and it was the little brother to the Stinger (which is what it actually looks like) and the price tag was 65% of what it is now, it wouldve been praised.
I have been a BMW fan for 20+ years, it’s all I have bought and driven in that time and I have enjoyed every one I have had. I am not sure what BMW are doing with their car design. What’s happened to a proper BMW M? When accountants control car design then its never going to be a good outcome!
The Kia is far better looking. For me its astonishing that Bmw designers were obviously so much inspired by the Ceed that even the 5 series has its headlights
Just swapped all of my last ETH and swapped it into XAI320. Already up a little bit. Unfortunately I have some other junk staked which won’t free up for a while. Still now I am on the train!
Kind of reminds me of what happened to the Impreza Turbo. Its first iteration (at the time) was wild, it was raw, great to drive and, at the time, rapid. What followed (some may disagree!) was a softer, less powerful (considering power to weight) version that slowly diluted the brand until almost all hot hatches were more powerful, had better performance and were a better drive. Eventually, everyone gave up on it, including Subaru. Also, the base model M135 now costs £43k, but they want more money for everything, including damn folding rear seats come on BMW, that's a terrible joke and I hope people aren't daft enough to buy it.
It used to be with beemers that if you optioned next to nothing you could get a new car with a decent engine for a reasonable price. Now the START prices are ridiculous and if you option anything useful they become insane. And the engine has gone from 6 to 4 cylinders just to add insult to injury. Who the feck would buy this car?
@@melaniezimmermann-jv7th I appreciate that but the lease payments also increase with the insanely expensive shopping car. I mean who can sensibly say a 1 series base car is a reasonable price at £43k? BMW have lost the plot.
As a owner of an ‘not so old’ F40 M135i, thanks god I didn’t wait for the release of this car. I’ve never thought the new one would make the old (and hated) still be a far better choice than this one. I’m pretty sure this review will create some concerns on the bmw offices…
Talking about hot hatches, I still can't find one with a better looking REAL rear diffuser than that of my Megane R.S. Trophy 💛 Not to mention the sound of the just as beautiful central exhaust
So, this facelift has made the F40 M135's styling look worse (IMO), has made the interior less user friendly (and look cheaper), has lowered the quality of some of the interior materials, has added significantly more weight, has reduced the power, has reduced some optional features and has made the car less fun to drive. This is seemingly a very rare example of a mid-life refresh that has made a car worse.
Personally i think it looks way better, ive always hated how the F40 looked. But its no BMW, its a KIA. You could literally remove the BMW badges, put KIA badges on it and no one would notice.
So the M badge has been diluted for over a decade, and we had to relearn that _30s are 2.0 4-cyls and _40s are 3.0 6-cyls. So now _35s are 2.0 4-cyls, and the 6-cyls will be, let me guess: _45s? Stupid af.

BMW are losing the plot in a lot of places and the general centiment seems to be eat all the pies then get the customer to pay for them in high sticker prices and everything being an option.
The 2021 M5 will be my last BMW for a while unless they sort it out.
Nearly all of today’s cars are boring. I own a car without a screen - it’s a six speed manual, has double wishbones front & rear, a stiff galvanised body, real dials, perfect sears, great handling and … it’s nineteen years old this month with 200k on the odometer.
But I’m 71, so I don’t know shite.
Those headlights are despicable. BMW messes up their car designs so bad...
I am pretty sure this car is primary designed for countries like China, India or other Asian markets.
BMW is not selling this 1 series in both China and India! So, casual racism is not enough to hide Europe's fall anymore.
@@placetectonics Strange, according to Wikipedia BMW is selling the F70 platform (in sedan form nameed F78) in China, with the same front design. Also since you mention Europe's fall, I am curious what cars will be coming from these countries, especially India, that will compete with BMWs offer in the luxury segment.

"As a massive VW/Audi fanboy, I never thought we'd see the day where a Golf was considered a better drivers car than a 1 Series."
That day was 5 years ago already when the F20 went out of production.
Better late than never, I suppose.

yeah, BMW obviously used touch sensitive buttons, because it's cheaper, but wanted to keep the tactility, so made the entire panel a mechanical button.

Sadly the 120i only has a 3 cylinder engine:(

Lease, no buy anymore (or a very little percentage).
It's a very dark time for car enthusiast in Europe, but rear seat in 3 ways have been optional for a long time with BMWs
