Tried out both yesterday. The BMW was much much better to drive and build quality was a different class to be honest. I was really disappointed as I wanted to like the Merc as it looks different. Back to BMW on Wednesday.
VinAr Run I had a older Mercedes clc and loved the build quality but the new a class is pretty poor even a Merc sales rep commented on the older a class had better build quality, a own a older rear wheel drive Bmw and to be honest I still thought this was better then the older a class esp the after thought stuck on screen , but I do feel Bmw have messed up getting rid of the rear wheel drive of it’s cars in favour of its front wheel or xdrive options
@VinAr Run But the reviewer proved that the A class just looks nice but in reality its cheap plastic inside. The design might look good now but it will become dated really quickly. BMW is much more classier and refined.
I drove both cars and will receive my 118i at the end of this month. I always found it horrible how most journalists kept on saying the A class is quieter and how they don’t mention the roughness of the engines in the A class, even the 4 cilinder Renault engines (although the a200 packs a punch). Also that A class dash indeed looks stunning but feels kind of disappointing, quality wise. You’re the first journalist who clearly notices it all, it’s like hearing myself reviewing these cars. Loved it! Just for that you’ve earned yourself a new subscription! Greetings from the Netherlands!
I’ve recently taken delivery of the new 118i M Sport and I love it. This is the 3rd 1 series I’ve had and although at first I was a little unsure on the new look, in person I think it looks great. (got it in blue). I also optioned for the auto which has made it feel even more premium and more relaxing when stuck in traffic. As the vid said the infotainment is great and I would agree. Overall very happy with it
wow since you owned the previous gen, what's the drive difference really like? The F20 was the best car I've ever driven along a twisty but I really don't know how much of it was due to rear wheel drive and how much of it was really good engineering on BMW's part.
@@wolverex hey, had the car for over a year now albeit due to lockdown it’s still under 3k on the clock lol. I regards to driving I like a good B road as much as the next person. As far as 'conclusion' at **25:30** although perhaps slightly biased my vote goes to the Mercedes and I am sure when it comes to sell on you will see far more value retained.*
Checked both today, the BMW is the clear winner. Beside the dual screens the Merc quality is extremely disappointing with cheap plastic and buttons everywhere
Very helpful video, have been debating between the 118i and A180, but think I’ll go for the BMW. Although the A class is very classy (pun not intended!) the BMW looks more fun to drive and overall seems to be a better motor

joe bloggs I dont agree. At least its not like that in my car. And how often do you grab the interior like that...never...lol. The A-class got the most exciting interior and the best infotainment system in the premium class.
I recently got my BMW-1 series, nice driving experience, smooth manual gearshift. I've driven in a Mercedes A class when I was taking drivinglessons, the overview at the rear/blindspot is pretty bad like a Volvo V40. The BMW offers much better view, though the app is lacking compared with the Volvo. The A class doesn't have an inspiring rear, which kinda looks outdated and low-end.
It's not that you cant tell the difference between FWD and RWD the biggest thing here is that most buyers of this class are cars are just ordinary motorists or those seeking brand prestige and they not real car enthusiasts who most definitely can tell the difference. I certainly can tell the difference when I am driving a RWD car as opposed to FWD my F20 was only a 118D but it was way more playful with it's RWD chassis then any of its FWD rivals. On the whole BMW probably did the right thing considering the majority of the type of people that will buy this thing but they have left a gap which now sadly won't be filled for those enthusiasts who truly appreciate a fine RWD chassis in a small package and that is a shame.
Always prefer BMW to be honest, don't like the stuck on info centre on Mercs, looks cheap, I like the build quality of BMW's always pretty decent, and the 1 series is a great drive, preferred the rear wheel drive, i had a 2 litre sport a while back, stuck to the road like glue, fun car to drive.
I own a 2009 116i and I can tell the focus of the design has shifted towards comfort by a long shot. My doors don’t even hold a half liter bottle and there are no cup holders at all xD
People seem to buy the A class Merc just to have the badge on their driveway. The fit on the inside of the Merc is poor unless you like a rattling dash.
Just took delivery of a new 1 series, and did this comparison myself. The A class interior has a lot of "showroom wow" factor, but I thought it was too blingy, and will date very quickly. The BMW was also better to drive so it was a certain winner for me.
I believe that the best choice is the bmw .It looks really nice .has lower consumption .it is more sporty and last but not least it is cheaper and better
May be a little bias (118i msport being collected in 2 weeks) Deals better on BMW and for my £350pm I pay on a DSG Msport, could only get in a merc se manual for that price. Think the top end merc beats my msport though! Although you will pay more. Oh and also merc looks sick in any colour whereas BMW only looks good in black IMO!
I am so glad BMW sells so many cars!! Just got a 25,000 km 3 yr old 3 series for less than half the original!! They leased out so many around us and they all coming back to the used market. I saw a dozen acceptable cars...wanted a used VW R but they are real big $$$
Can’t wait to pick up my new 1 series this week! This review was so helpful too, others just seem to be spending time lamenting the loss of RWD. And, both BMW UK and the tech “expert” at the dealer said I would need to upgrade to Tech Pack 2 to get Apple CarPlay despite what’s in the brochure. Glad I didn’t spend the extra £1500!
Saira got the same. Glad your enjoying yours. The apple car play was a worry for me too but absolutely fine just have to make sure you set your phone up correctly in the first place.
BMW wins hands down! When you do buy your 118i mclass make sure you upgrade the sound system and choose the blue calipers. It will set upi back approx $2500
They're both great car companies but the average BMW owner drives far more aggresively than the average Mercedes owner (racing, excessive lane changing, tailgating etc) Mercedes drivers are generally pretty cool and BMW drivers often act like jerks on the road, which is why many people choose Mercedes, regardless of the relative attributes of the cars. Sorry if I've offended anyone but it's the truth a lot of the time.
An excellent comparison of these 2 cars but the BMW is obviously the better drive so is my choice. Also you did not make mention that the exterior paint on the inside of the door frames is not a good look for a Mercedes and cheapens the interior. BMW make sure that this area is covered by trim.
I drove the 125I and A250. The A250 does not only look much better but the drive also is much more comfortable. Put in in Sport mode and it also drives better then the BMW. Mercedes wins this battle.

Really informative review with no brand bias. British reviewers are much better than American. Soon as I hear an American accent I turn it off. They sound like over excited Bill and Ted's
Easier isn't a point scoring feature in my book, it just means less flexible. I like the Mercedes infotainment system precisely because its far more customisable. It;s also got a much nicer ambient lighting system.
Call me old fashioned but I actually WANT to hear my car's engine as I'm driving, and I WANT to feel the connection to the road. I cannot stand this trend of ridiculously silent engines. If you can hear your engine and transmission sufficiently, your ear can pick up problems before they become a problem. People are making vehicles that take the auditory/kinesthetic information away from the driver, and that is a terrible trend for driver behaviour and safety.
You say the Germans are looking for younger buyers and other hatch buyers to tempt them to bigger German cars in the future. Yet you review the amg and m series worth 40k each! Hardly realistic for Mr average Astra and Focus man who might go for a 3 series 5 years on.
Forza223 Bowe I don’t drive in snow (Australia). While FWD may be good to drive, IMO, RWD are better. BMW is losing its advantage every time it replaces a RWD platform with a FWD platform.
Mercedes UK is a joke. The A Class AMG Line only comes with one design of 18” wheels and limited option of interior colour options ... I don’t understand why, as the rest of Europe gets much wider choice. I don’t want 18” wheels or another boring full black interior ... so, Hey Mercedes! Until you rectify the Uk offer, you can keep your car
What a rubbish comment at the end of the video, "fraction of the price " !! Really?? Have you checked a bit before talking? I wanted a BMW 118i M Sport. The alternative was a Ford Focus Vignale 1.5 petrol 182hp which came almost fully packed, and to be completely packed I added special colour, panoramic roof , Blind spot and wireless charger.Final price 29.3K Now, I've tried to add all the options the above configured Vignale had to the BMW. There is almost no option available to choose at BMW, all the desirable are part of incredibly priced packages. When finally I all options from Vignale added the price was...39K ! 39K it's huge for a hatchback , and it was a manual, if you want auto will add another 1.8K , and it's only front wheel drive so nothing special anymore, and the insipid 1.5 BMW engine with only 138hp. Did I pay 10K more for a badge and better materials on the lower part of centre console? No ! The problem I have with the reviewers is that they "package" the cars depending on what they want to came out as conclusion, highlighting the good bits and hiding the elephant in the room! Which in this case is the huge price if you want to be nice and optioned.
Aren't you a BMW paíd guy? Nothing wrong to tell about BMW, nothing good to tell about Mercedes. It sounds suspicious. A Class look it's a 2 years old car, and BMW has a restyling in 2020, copying, a bad copy, most of the Mercedes interior advantages.

If only BMW 1 series did not have an ugly face like this. If BMW had been a bit sensible the way they designed that awful front look, this car would have been number 1 hot hatch of 2020s. Now I wait for Audi A3 release in March. (2016 A3 owner, BMW 116d ex-owner)

Mercedes W177 A Class: Pros: Great looks and impressive tech. Cons: Cheaper plastics, cost-cutting measures, frequent squeaks and rattles, and low ground clearance unsuitable for UK roads. BMW 1 Series F40: Pros: Superior build quality, better everyday driving experience, and a smoother torque converter automatic gearbox. Cons: Not as visually appealing as the Mercedes (subjective opinion). Personal Experience: I owned the Mercedes A35 AMG Premium Plus: Stunning appearance but plagued by electrical issues and rattles, leading to frequent dealer visits. After only 18 months of ownership, I part ex'd it for a nearly new BMW M135i: After nearly two years of ownership, I have no regrets, this highlights BMW's reliability and overall owner satisfaction.

Waiting for my m sport bmw to be delivered next month, can't wait for my first car!😏
You won't be disappointed 😉
@@Burkee85 I'm pretty confident with my instincts, is yours m sport as well? ☺
Me too! Probably end of month now cos of this coronavirus. I got 118i msport in black (auto)
Great! I've also been told end of the month as well. I went for the storm bay colour. Did you add any extras on yours?
Omar S got it now mate love it, only extra was Automatic gearbox, got black exterior and interior
Easier isn't a point scoring feature in my book, it just means less flexible. I like the Mercedes infotainment system precisely because its far more customisable. It;s also got a much nicer ambient lighting system.
Definitely Mercedes is better, amazing A class!
I’ve just ordered the 118i M. I wasn’t too sure About ordering a 1.5. 3 cylinder car still not 100 Percent sure any comments
Nothing wrong with a 1.5 3 cyl in a hatch like this… has more character than a 4cyl imo, a more interesting thrum to it
which colour best suits the a class black or white currently unable to choose one
White!
I got the black one
Check out the digital white metallic
Had the 1 series so gona have a change...loving the look of the interior of the A Class..hope it drives as good as it looks
It’s not quite as sharp to drive as the 1 Series, but you shouldn’t be disappointed. It’s a very good car. 👌
Yeah I would definitely say it does but only comparing it to the A250
Yes I’m happy to say that I definitely made the right choice..Mercedes Benz all the way 😎
Call me old fashioned but I actually WANT to hear my car's engine as I'm driving, and I WANT to feel the connection to the road.
A-Class 😍♥️
You say the Germans are looking for younger buyers and other hatch buyers to tempt them to bigger German cars in the future. Yet you review the amg and m series worth 40k each! Hardly realistic for Mr average Astra and Focus man who might go for a 3 series 5 years on.
PCP and leasing deals mean such cars are now affordable for many (but obviously not all) younger drivers, Ryan.
40k each?! They don’t cost 40k pal. The m135i and A35 don’t even cost that.
Let me just go ahead and say it. The BMW is hideous. The end.
Bongani Andy Mabaso yes! 🤣
Great detailed comment there
It’s so ugly. What a joke
In black it’s sick!! The msport bumper on the rear looks amazing blacked out. Looks shit in grey + white though!
Greetings from Istanbul as a 4-month 1.18 m sports owner.
I'm sticking with my Dacia😁😁
Still Bmw 1 series drive better
I just can’t take a FWD BMW seriously.
FWD cars are better in the snow, and are still good to drive
Forza223 Bowe I don’t drive in snow (Australia). While FWD may be good to drive, IMO, RWD are better. BMW is losing its advantage every time it replaces a RWD platform with a FWD platform.
A-Class hands down
The 1 series is growing on me. Unless its amg line the Mercedes is boring to look at
I hope you're talking about the outside, because the inside is way cooler and fun than the BMW
is it true that the engine in this BMW is actually made by MINI (and not BMW)?
AJ luvzlondon The B38 engine is manufactured by BMW, but it is also used in the Mini hatch. I hope this helps.
Something more shuddering the a180d motor in the Mercedes is made by Renault and used in a Dacia. They all do it.
Also the engine in the BMW MSport is also used in the hybrid BMW i8!
You are from ‘78? Go buy a car that related to your age. Lol
Arjun अर्जुन् fuck off
Yeah something to do with emissions and airflow only for the A class for some reason, Came across the one due out next month and looks a lot better.
Connected Plus Package (with maps and Apple CarPlay) on BMW is not standard, it costs around €1,2k
The car featured in the video is a UK-spec BMW 1 Series. In the UK, the Connected Plus Package is fitted as standard on all 1 Series models.
What a rubbish comment at the end of the video, "fraction of the price " !! Really?? Have you checked a bit before talking?
I wanted a BMW 118i M Sport. The alternative was a Ford Focus Vignale 1.5 petrol 182hp which came almost fully packed, and to be completely packed I added special colour, panoramic roof , Blind spot and wireless charger.Final price 29.3K
Now, I've tried to add all the options the above configured Vignale had to the BMW.
A class💪
Are we sure we can have android auto on the BMW? I've heard multiple times you can't...
Watch the video he says that it is around 4.98m
Someone help me out here, which trims on the A class have the automatic parking????
A class all the way !
German corrolla without the reliability..
The a class exterior is nicer but the interior is a bit plasticky + only looks good with the upgraded screens.
Mercedes will always be ahead of Bmw.
In ur.dream,
AMIRUL AZFAR SHAHRIZAL 😂😂😂 look whos talkin 😂😂
Aren't you a BMW paíd guy? Nothing wrong to tell about BMW, nothing good to tell about Mercedes. It sounds suspicious. A Class look it's a 2 years old car, and BMW has a restyling in 2020, copying, a bad copy, most of the Mercedes interior advantages.
Not a fair comparison!!!
You should have compared the Mercedes with the BMW 2.0 liter diesel Engine with exactly 190 diesel hp.
I have both, bm performs better the Merc looks better
But I like Mercedes more
Why buy a premium vehicle with manual transmission?
Some people, like myself prefer to have control of the car. It is annoying that BMW Australia do not have a manual option anymore.
Why buy a Boring auto transmission car ??? The only reason someone should buy auto is because he doesn’t know how to drive!!!
where is the audi a3 2020 ?? :(
Wasn’t launched at the time of filming sadly!
@@ParkersTV just kidding mate ❤️ I know 🥰🥰
I did order the A3 without viewing any reviews so I am a little impatient 😂😂
Keep up the good work 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Can’t believe the Mercedes uses a Renault engine! My neighbour has had one now for 2 years, and it’s already Broken down!
Which one, the A 180d or the A200?
Its a jointly designed engine, it's not a Renault engine.
@bikeman123 it's a Renault engine
BMW every day all day 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Benz is much better and more beatiful 🤌
Bmw is nice too
I want to know how good are the speakers 🔊 in the Mercedes-Benz A class
What do u work as to afford the car bro?
Racer Racer I work the social services. Managing social workers. A mainstream public servant job. Just upgraded my Golf 7 to an A-Class with AMG line and Premium Pack (don’t get it without it). It’s more than manageable. This is their entry level car. Are you considering it?
I have a fully loaded A-Class & the speakers are honestly out of this world!!! I'm a bit of a speaker head so I've tested out a lot of car speakers, both luxury & your basic driver.
Merc any day!!!
How did the driving compare between A3 / 116d? Automatic?
Yordi Uytersprot Bmw was sportier, but in my age (over 40’s) the comfort of A3 is much better. Have you seen the new A3?
Actually I have watched it live now many times and I like it. Anyway, this BMW is so much better than the Mere as this test stated.
@@agassidr did you get the new a3 already?
Agree - they could really improve on the backside of those 1 series beemers!
Probably works for BMW#Very biased opinion only almost everything
We can assure you that none of our staff work for BMW or any other car manufacturer.
The Bias is cleverly hidden .... better to compare Apples with Apples .... ruclips.net/video/4rZWVp0Zg1M/видео.html
That BMW 1series looks hideous..
MBUX is actually the BEST System on the Market.. ask MAT from CarWoW 😄
Uhhhh no.
EKO does it? Does it really...
Voice control is the most useless car invention.
Luck Ding Wong no its not. Its great if you know how to use it. And The MBUX is much better system compared to the BMW.
WinkelHoof no it’s not 😂
Swap the alloys around and you got a nice looking merc.bmw need to up the game, when it comes to exterior design, audi designers are on it right now with the designs.
So information dense interior review it made me feel overwhelmed.
Mercedes W177 A Class:
Pros: Great looks and impressive tech.
Cons: Cheaper plastics, cost-cutting measures, frequent squeaks and rattles, and low ground clearance unsuitable for UK roads.
BMW 1 Series F40:
Pros: Superior build quality, better everyday driving experience, and a smoother torque converter automatic gearbox.
Cons: Not as visually appealing as the Mercedes (subjective opinion).
Personal Experience:
I owned the Mercedes A35 AMG Premium Plus: Stunning appearance but plagued by electrical issues and rattles, leading to frequent dealer visits. After only 18 months of ownership, I part ex'd it for a nearly new BMW M135i: After nearly two years of ownership, I have no regrets, this highlights BMW's reliability and overall owner satisfaction.
