The third generation 1 Series looks to establish itself as the premium hatch of choice in a hotly-contested sector. Jonathan Crouch takes a look.
    Ten Second Review
The MK3 version of BMW's 1 Series gets a new platform, a new drive layout and new engines. It's sleeker, lighter, safer, more practical and more efficient than before. And, the company reckons, it's still the most rewarding steer in the premium compact hatch sector. Big claims for an important car.
    Background
Front wheel drive and BMW. Once, it was a phrase you'd never hear. But then the Munich maker introduced a front-driven platform into its 2 Series Active Tourer MPV. And now this layout's gone mainstream with the third generation version of the brand's smallest model, the 1 Series hatch.
It's not so small these days, especially inside where the switch of drive layouts has freed up more room, particularly in the boot. But will the dynamic change of heart neutralise what has previously been this model line's greatest draw - uniquely rewarding handling? BMW says not - and provides a completely fresh range of engines to further sweeten the pill. On top of that there's a smarter cabin and upgraded safety. Sounds promising.
    Driving Experience
Back at the launch of the very first 1 Series model in 2003, rear wheel drive was a non-negotiable part of BMW's engineering fabric. Yet this layout practically compromised both that MK1 model and its 2011 successor. And for what? The Munich maker's own research suggests that over 85% of 1 Series customers have no idea whether the drive wheels are front or rear. And whoever complained about the handling of a front-driven BMW-engineered MINI? If you opt for the brand's xDrive 4WD system of course, none of this will matter, but availability of that depends upon the engine you select, so let's take a look at the various powerplant options, all of them re-developed for this car.
BMW expects the 150hp 118d diesel to be the big seller; for black pump variants, there's also a lesser 116hp 116d three cylinder 1.5-litre derivative and a more powerful 190hp 120d 2.0-litre model, the latter only offered with the xDrive system. That 4WD set-up is also a non-negotiable part of the top petrol M135i xDrive hot hatch variant (which offers 306hp), but most customers wanting to fuel from the green pump with this car will choose the 1.5-litre three cylinder 140hp unit powering the base 118i front-driven version. Three different transmissions are on offer, depending on variant. The 116d, the 118d and the 118i get an upgraded 6-speed manual gearbox and the two base three cylinder variants(116d and 118i) can also be ordered with an optional 7-speed Stepronic auto. At the top of the range, the brand's smooth 8-speed Steptronic Sport auto transmission is optional on the 118d and has to be had on the two top xDrive models.
    Design and Build
The rather dumpy styling that characterised earlier 1 Series models is all forgotten now; this third generation model is much sleeker, with a more wedged shaped silhouette and a pronounced 'shark nose'. At the front, the BMW kidney grille is larger and, for the first time in this model range, the kidneys merge in the middle. The car features a shorter bonnet and significantly more space than before within a footprint almost identical to that of its predecessor. At 4,319 millimetres, the MK3 1 Series is 5mm shorter, 34mm wider and 13mm higher.
The 2,670mm wheelbase meanwhile, is 20 millimetres shorter but despite that, thanks to the switch of drive layouts, there's significantly more cabin space than before. Passenger access is easier, particularly in the rear where there's an extra 33mm of knee room, 13mm more elbow room and 19mm more head room. The luggage compartment capacity rises by 20-litres to 380-litres (or 1,200-litres with the rear seat bench folded down). The minimum width of the luggage compartment has also increased by 67mm. Up-front, BMW's latest 'Live Cockpit Plus' infotainment package is standard giving you an 8.8-inch centre-dash screen and a 5.7-inch instrument cluster display. This set-up includes features such as a Touch Controller, a navigation system, two USB ports for data transfer and a WiFi interface.

Best car review on RUclips - no personal BS.
    Integrity with facts and honesty.
I don't know Jonathon Crouch, (I hope I have the right name), but he comes across in this BMW 1 series review as authentic and credible.
And in the 21st Century that's a rare thing for something so basic and important in communication skills.

My wife has recently taken delivery of a 118i M Sport, and I can confirm it's a fantastic little car. Drives very nicely, has a decent amount of power for town and city driving and has a very smart and high quality interior with excellent tech. Coming from a 2017 4 series it's obviously not as powerful and nice to look at but ticks plenty of boxes. Great review and thanks.

Very comprehensive review to say the least! I can't believe I watched the whole hour, albeit in three stints. Looking at the UK configurator now (late Nov 2020) the comments about the lack of Android Auto (AA) support are out of date. I specced up a 118i M Sport and the Connected Package Professional (included as standard) not only includes AA mirroring (as well as Apple carplay), but it's also wireless. I had trouble finding any info on the configurator about adaptive dampers, but it sounds like you probably don't need them. The exciting new 128ti has been launched since this video was made, which obviously plugs the huge power gap between the 118i petrol and the M135i.

Great video, love the new f40 1 series. Quick check on facts was that you could have adaptive dampers on the old f20/21 model and also the automatic versions (like standard m135i) do not have zf boxes anymore, but do have an Aisin 8 speed ones which are great too 👍

    • @bloodstockvip2176
      @bloodstockvip2176 3 года назад

@RichJW having had zf boxes in all my past cars I disagree in part. The zf might be a better gearbox (build or setup) but the Aisin box is way way better for manual upshifts, savage actually at 5.5k revs which I enjoy. In auto it is just as smooth but does not kick down as quickly as the zf for sure 👍

Way too much gap between the 118i 140 hp and M135i 306hp.
It's more than double, a mid range 120i would have had his customers, including myself.
The packages are badly done and the options almost don't exist to choose outside of packages..
To meet my desired minimum list of options needed to tick comfort pack plus both technology packs. Plus panoramic roof colour and better wheels the 118i M sport went up to 36k!
Way too much, really liked the car but as said because desirable options are only part of packages takes the price of the car to the next level

Unfortunately too late , I already had my car..frustrating as the power output was exactly what I was looking for .The only downside is the price, starts at 34k , I've configured with my minimum of options and it went up to nearly 40k!
But again considering the power and fun I think I would have payed the price.

So who wants a petrol engine and is not willing to pay nearly 40 grand for a one series can forget about adaptive suspension. Good review, but how can people say 25/30k car an affordable car? I could afford a house deposit with that money.

Its not ZF, it is Aisin gearbox.

I'm suitably impressed by the non-stop uninterrupted commentary from this guy but how many people would actually view this very long video to the end? It must have taken a fair while to string all this detail together. Good to see that BMW cover the interior pillars with trim rather than the exposed paintwork on Mercedes and Audi. BTW Apple Car Play is now totally free.

David Perry I often watch the OSV videos to the end. Enjoy the articulate, detailed presentation. They generally do a shorter version of each review, too.

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply Please do not degrade your fantastic and refreshing reviews to short form only - with the amount of technology, option packages and model diffferences at large, it seems like the 1 hour reviews are absolutely perfect....especially when delivered by this outstanding gentleman from this review.

I had a 118d for a week. My 320d had some gremlins dealt with under warranty. The Aisin gearbox in the 118d is impressive compared to ZF. It feels strange being pulled along rather than pushed along because it is front wheel drive. So does not drive like a BMW per se. What made me laugh was when I went to activate the adaptive high beam. A message popped up on the iDrive stating it was a subscription only feature. I can see the appeal though. I net 55 mpg on a drive through the countryside. It handles well. Reverse camera was okay but a little out of alignment. Despite lining up several times to back into a bay it was not perfect. It’s likely more as an extra set of eyes to manoeuvre safely. The car is grown up in size. Not as nimble as previous generations. Front seats felt a little cramped for myself as 6ft and they would probably feel uncomfortable on a long journey. So definitely not a cruiser. It’s not bad as an entry point into BMW but the G20 just rides better and is near perfect. If you must though then the 120d engine would be the pick, diesel wise. The 118d is nippy up to 30mph a dead spot and, then a lump of torque 45-52mph, followed by a bit more of a struggle. The 120d feels far more linear and the torque seems better controlled. Although torque steer is entirely possible if not driving to conditions.

      Hi Ken,
Due to the sheer amount of content unfortunately some data (like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) will be out of date by the time we upload. We try and ensure that we update as often as we can, however in this case we missed it.

Its a ford focus, but not as good looking and costs silly money. All the creases makes it look it has been in a crash. makes you wonder how much the presenter was bribed to say good things about BMW.

So in a nutshell the all new BMW 118 is very generic and looks exactly like a Hyundai i30 with a bmw grill. I would rather invest in the previous model.
