Trying to understand the 12" AR57 explosion because i have that exact setup... This mainly happened because the casing sheared and the next round loaded over it. When the next round was fired, it was impeded therefore it blew up? My question is: could this have happened on any firearm or is this related to the blowback design? Would this have happened as easily on a pistol? Main question: more of a round issue or the gun design flaw?
You had two separations? Or were there more than just those 2 you showed on screen near the end? Were they in various guns (and if so, which?), or all in the AR? It's crazy that it allowed for the next round to be struck! Thankfully my Ruger wouldn't allow that, or I would have for sure done it on my 1st round of Extreme Ammunition...I didn't know it happened and tried like heck to set off the next shot. phew!!
@@BuffRANGE woah! I have thought often of getting the AR57, but dang - I don't know now...after seeing it allows for that next trigger-pull. I'm assuming your had to remove the neck each time from the CMMG and it won't fire OOB. That's good. And now that I review that detonation, it's SO fortunate that it wasn't on a bull-pup, as your face looks positioned right above the chamber/firing-pin, whereas that AR and others it's well behind that spot. Glad nobody got injured!!
@@ShastaBean On the CMMG, I would chamber another round and then charge it, and it would usually pull the neck out for me without getting out the bore brush :D Since the BCG on the CMMG has to be locked, it would not fire :D. I will have to update you on how the revised BCG works in the AR57. I thought the PS90 action would prevent OOB, but I guess we need to test that now :)
@@BuffRANGE That's a handy way to remove the neck!! When I was testing the Extreme ammo...he was blaming it as the fault of my gun, at first separation, because he claimed it got tested in a bunch of other guns. I put the question to Jay (on his M&P in depth review video) as to whether other various gun designs have quite different pressure curves, since pretty obviously the M&P does with its gas system...He basically said yes, and explained how the FN has progressive rifling. So maybe it won't happen on your PS90? Hornady perhaps needs to take a close look at your testing results, and consider very carefully on whether to leave this ammo on the market, imo. If dozens of videos go out with separations...? How's that going to look? I mean, heck...it looks like CCI pulled the Uppercut ammo just due to fail to expand in clear gel...even though it looks to work just fine in the 10% organic stuff, and likely in tissue. Thanks for what you do!!
on the AR57 upper , if it feels the least bit gritty whey cycling the bolt, it probably has the same problem mine had the hammer is contacting the bolt and binding up. trim off some of the hammer till it cycles clean with no snags or grittyness. --the ar57s seem to have the bolt reliefs cut way too tight-
@Buff where are the delts? Dig the content. Picking up the Tisas to dip my toe in the 5.7 waters. When do you think we will see 5.7 ammo price decline. Who makes your glasses? Are they RX compatible
I probably should do some more overhead pressing. I've been stuck at the 170-175 strict press for a long time. I got sucked away from progressive overload, and it's taken me a few years to learn that just pumping out mindless volume 4-5 days a week isn't getting me stronger. A lot of it is coming down from Covid. I don't know if we'll see 15/50 5.7 anymore, but AAC at times has their FMJ 19/50, and their Vmax at 25/50.. Gatorz makes the current glasses I use, and I believe they have prescription. www.gatorz.com/ Let me know how you like the Tisas. I don't have one yet and would love to review it to compare to the other 5.7 guns.
The KelTec yes no doubt. It happened during my review of the P50. The P50 is straight blowback and has signs of over pressure on ss198LF ;). The ps90 I believe has some safety built into it.
They replaced the upper with a revised BCG and changes the dimensions/location of the firing pin so that the hammer potentially can't fall if the bolt isn't all the way home.. I need to make a new video.

06-28-2024 I bought a " Space Gat " today to go along with my Rock 57 and Ruger LC Carbine in 5 7x28. Buffman, can you tell me how the V-max based bullets react in gel if the shooter pulls the little plastic nose cone out of the bullet?
Bro can you please tell me where I can find an alignment rod for the 5.7 pistol. And what is the right size? My local gun store didn’t have one. And they told me 223 wasn’t the right size.
How do you have that ARMS mounted on your p90? I’d love to get one on mine. Running aems or prisms on almost everything these days except a few lpvo’s and actual scoped precision stuff
I have personally seen the AR5.7 do that to a friend.... I think the p90 style mags are awful. They seem to malfunction more than others but particularly there's some chambering issues with the AR5.7
I have had nothing but trouble out of "slick" ammo. My sample size is small, two different times. One with a S&W 5.7 and one with a Sig P322. I usually load my mags two or three days before I go to the range. I wonder if that is a bad practice with "slick" ammo?
@@melissasmess2773 The S&W wouldn't allow for this situation to happen. Everything else operates by purposefully timing case stretch as a means of function. The S&W is fully locked breech, gas operated. It does not permit the brass to stretch at all. This case stretch is why the brass is coated, the coating is to aid in safe stretch without case neck seperation.
@@BuffRANGE If they do it's hard to measure it, I have both an FsN and the S&W. The FsN radically changes the shoulder and stretches the shoulder forward, on the S&W I can't really detect any stretch beyond what you might get out of a 5.56 rifle.
I'd love to see a side by side comparison with SS197SR. I did a little googling and the Hornady Black costs noticeably more. At present I can buy a 500 rd. lot of SS197SR for only $285. I get the impression that the Hornady Black has marginally higher velocity, but a side by side test would clear that up.
Hard to say without being some super dooper engineer? My guess is that the straight blowback action is more stressful on the brass and that's what causes it? Couple that with the fact that 5.7 brass is pretty thin to begin with.
@@Maniac742I have experienced it over the years multiple times with ss197 in all of my various 5.7 firearms. It is the only factory loads that I have had do this somewhat regularly.
Dear Buffman Range I have found this interesting 5.7 ammo from Darkest Hour Defense. It is a 45gr soft point flat base lead core projectiles. A customer of his showed that it penetrates Lvl3A armor and made a massive crater in a 12” dense clay block. If you could get a hold of this ammo I’d love to see the actual terminal effectiveness on fbi ballistic gel. I’m looking for a good round to run in my SBR PS90 and thought this would be a good idea.
IIRC this sounds like the ammo that another youtuber tested and had multiple failures on it. Their listed velocities are quite high. Do you have a link to them. IMO without a feed ramp on the P90 I would stick to long pointy bullets.
@BuffRANGE I know from experiencing the same issue with the original AR57 that at least in my case the barrel being out of spec plus the bolt able to allow it to still fire was definitely part of the equation. But can we truly claim at this moment that the ammo case wall being so thin also did not have any play in the kb? I ask this considering that you did have case separations in one of the other styled 5.7 firearms.
Good Lord you got lucky!!! Thank God you were wearing gloves and eye-pro. P.S. We can't afford to lose the national treasure, which is your channel, due to a out of battery explosion.
I do. I go from subsonic to being able to safe my SBR AR, with petaling, expanding, and penetrating ammo out my LC Carbine. I hunt deer and defend my family with three 29 rd magazines that are less cumbersome than my G40 with one magazine. Why is it so funny to be flexible?
@@BuffRANGE Iin southern Pennsylvania near the Maryland border. Thnx also I wanted to know what ammo do you think has the best penetration out of 16 inch barrel?
5.7 is cool and all, but its just not for me. Its just such an underwhelming round. If i want a suer fast handgun round ill just go with the light bullet 9mm options. Especially with the shellshock brass making it safe to run at super +p+. Also that OBD was nuts.
Because a like platform for 57 doesn’t exist, my wife uses Liberty Civil Defense 50whatever gr +p in her P365SAS and we are very confidently protected.
AR DOWN! AR DOWN! *sadface*. Looks like it's time to wait on getting a top loader style until the OOB protection from one of the manufacturers proves itself. Tested a friends 5.7 banshee with them after seeing this, used an emptied case with just a live primer, held the bolt open at numerous distances while pulling trigger..... no OOB ignition, our emptied case w/live primer lived to see another day. Saw a few more videos on OOB with the P90 style AR uppers, notably Ian had similar issues with neck separation. IMO it's a combination of 2 problems. 1st, the ammo case itself is obviously a problem, it shouldnt be separating but 2nd the P90 style uppers (all manufacturers it seems) are not protecting against OOB problems at all let alone adequately or even a little bit. This assumption based solely on research as I dont have one to test yet using the same method we used on a banshee and my own M&P 5.7 handgun (beautiful gun, mine has the safety).
Jarvis is not replacing his tools/bits in a timely fashion. As a result the cuts are sloppy and it gets nasty dirty when suppressed. I am unable to recommend.
Buff swap it to an efk barrel. I stared with Jarvis and never had any good luck with accuracy, so I switched it out to an efk. I probably put close to 10k rounds through the efk, and it still performs flawlessly.

@@ShastaBean In reality the big guys like Hornady don't care about me. I gave this data to the contact I had at Hornady 2/27.. No reply..
on the AR57 upper , if it feels the least bit gritty whey cycling the bolt, it probably has the same problem mine had the hammer is contacting the bolt and binding up. trim off some of the hammer till it cycles clean with no snags or grittyness. --the ar57s seem to have the bolt reliefs cut way too tight-
I'll check it out!
Gatorz makes the current glasses I use, and I believe they have prescription.
www.gatorz.com/
Let me know how you like the Tisas. I don't have one yet and would love to review it to compare to the other 5.7 guns.
So was that blowout caused by ammo or the gun?
More so a combo. Somewhat a safety
Issue with the upper but maybe slightly thinner brass?
Hey great info, I always like the testing! Thank you 💯Crazy scary one today super happy your good to go!
Glad you're okay brother
I'm so glad I never pulled the trigger on the AR-57 upper purchase.
What Gen was that upper?
Thanks!
Like 2023 brand new before they made a change.
I'm wondering if the OOB would have happened in the PS90 or KelTec if given the chance.
The KelTec yes no doubt. It happened during my review of the P50. The P50 is straight blowback and has signs of over pressure on ss198LF ;). The ps90 I believe has some safety built into it.
Damn. That 57ar. I like your format
Thanks :) and it’s back online after a replacement upper
Did it hurt the gun?
It took some chips out of the aluminum rails so it's down and out.
Read all the comments- any update on the AR-57 case seperation fix?
They replaced the upper with a revised BCG and changes the dimensions/location of the firing pin so that the hammer potentially can't fall if the bolt isn't all the way home.. I need to make a new video.
@@BuffRANGE Please do, thank you.

Elite Ammo Dev 2.0/3.0
Elite Ammo S4
RR Weapon Systems R37X

Cool to see that your wife enjoys this too.

@@BuffRANGE That's awesome, man.
My wife recently died of lung cancer, she was only 32. She was a nurse, I am a nurse, we both worked a lot. Now it's just me and our two sweet little kiddos.
Anyway, I am sorry, that was TMI, but I just want you to know I think it's awesome you spend time with her and your family doing the things you love. That time is worth more than anything in this life, I think.

I bought a " Space Gat " today to go along with my Rock 57 and Ruger LC Carbine in 5 7x28.
Buffman, can you tell me how the V-max based bullets react in gel if the shooter pulls the little plastic nose cone out of the bullet?
How do you get me excited in a 5.7x28 ammo review … own brass, different lacquer, more case capacity - can’t wait to see the results
What do you consider to be the most reliable ammo option when it comes to 5.7?
You got that failure on video, wow that was scary. Did not see that coming.
Great 👌 Content.. Your channel has saved me Time and especially reloading components. Thank You 🎉🎉
You are most welcome
Bro can you please tell me where I can find an alignment rod for the 5.7 pistol. And what is the right size? My local gun store didn’t have one. And they told me 223 wasn’t the right size.
How do you have that ARMS mounted on your p90? I’d love to get one on mine. Running aems or prisms on almost everything these days except a few lpvo’s and actual scoped precision stuff
Wish you started w the MK2. Dang Rock lolz.
I've had a few 9mm ar9's out of battery detonate on me man is that no fun I got a bunch of brass pieces in my hand
I have personally seen the AR5.7 do that to a friend.... I think the p90 style mags are awful. They seem to malfunction more than others but particularly there's some chambering issues with the AR5.7
It's generally because the feed angle must be 100% correct because there's no feed ramp.
I have had nothing but trouble out of "slick" ammo. My sample size is small, two different times. One with a S&W 5.7 and one with a Sig P322. I usually load my mags two or three days before I go to the range. I wonder if that is a bad practice with "slick" ammo?
8 inch was perfect to me as far expansion 3 inches in not to early but also deep enough to hit vitals while creating a long damage cavity
Man you called it on the case being thinner... yikes!
I’m good on 5.7, not buying any of that Thumb Remover ammo 🔥🚑
@@melissasmess2773 The S&W wouldn't allow for this situation to happen. Everything else operates by purposefully timing case stretch as a means of function. The S&W is fully locked breech, gas operated. It does not permit the brass to stretch at all. This case stretch is why the brass is coated, the coating is to aid in safe stretch without case neck seperation.
The cases in the M&P still expand and stretch a little.
Effectively Ss197sr would need the 10-16” to get the terminal affect that we are getting out of the 5.2” barrel. Another option for you is AAC Vmax.
MANNN!! ARE YOU GOOD?!!😮💨Wasnt expecting That! 🤣
Yep. I am unscathed. The gun not so much.
Yeah don't use those anymore 😅@@BuffRANGE
Keep up the good work. Man b careful. God bless u
Thank you very much, and indeed, safety first!
What caused the case neck separation? I've seen that during reloading, but never with factory ammo.
Hard to say without being some super dooper engineer? My guess is that the straight blowback action is more stressful on the brass and that's what causes it? Couple that with the fact that 5.7 brass is pretty thin to begin with.
@@BuffRANGE True, but I've never seen a case separation with factory FN ammunition.
@@Maniac742 I have. Ian at FW had it happen on his AR57. I had it happen on the P50 with SS198LF that KB! the gun

I dont have a direct link but if you look this up on gunbroker it comes up 5.7x28mm 45 gr Pointed Soft Point Ammo 2380 FPS Box of 20. SS190 L191 SS198
He has other offerings as well im just curious about it because idk what to run for a defensive ammo in the space gun.
Great video. I won't be buying any Hornady 5.7 ammo after seeing that Kaboom.
I would say most of the blame is on the BCG of the upper.
Where does this sit in your 5.7 ammo tier list?
Above the AAC Vmax ONLY for the higher velocity, but that should be noted the jury is still out about it's reliability.
What is more powerful around your testing or a 380 Liberty civil defense going 1600 FPS or a 380 HST?
Good Lord you got lucky!!! Thank God you were wearing gloves and eye-pro.
P.S. We can't afford to lose the national treasure, which is your channel, due to a out of battery explosion.
Right!!
What’s The effective Range of 5.7x28 ? 300 ?
I would say 150-200 yards tops
Depends what you consider effective range
Do you know what powder it is?
Unfortunately no. Big time guys get custom mixed powder. They would have to tell us and I'm sure they won't.
Very great video
Just subbed
Thanks for the sub!
Always funny to see companys are still trying to make a 1 caliber or 1 gun solution for eeeevvvvreything.
I do. I go from subsonic to being able to safe my SBR AR, with petaling, expanding, and penetrating ammo out my LC Carbine. I hunt deer and defend my family with three 29 rd magazines that are less cumbersome than my G40 with one magazine. Why is it so funny to be flexible?
Why that mag do that
Blow up? Because the round didn't go all the way in the chamber, but the primer got set off. The unsupported brass blew up the gun.
I am assuming my numbers on my lc carbine will be much higher. Thanks.
Well at 30* warmer temps and some elevation sure :D What kind of climate to you live in?
@@BuffRANGE Iin southern Pennsylvania near the Maryland border. Thnx also I wanted to know what ammo do you think has the best penetration out of 16 inch barrel?

Seems to be a few issues with this ammo....
outstanding
Did you have an extra pair of short? 😁
Glad you weren't hurt. You could have been blinded.
It was quite the shocker!
Multiple case neck separations? Totally unacceptable and Hornady should go back to the drawing board with these rounds.
AR DOWN! AR DOWN!
Do you have one ? I need to re-test some other rounds, but something is amiss.
Buff swap it to an efk barrel. I stared with Jarvis and never had any good luck with accuracy, so I switched it out to an efk. I probably put close to 10k rounds through the efk, and it still performs flawlessly.
Jarvis gave me a real short "refund" which I applied to the EFK. This cleaned up the dirty carbon mess the ill cut Jarvis caused.
@@DOCKent-3339 I'll let you know.
