I hope they make SS198 equivalent one day. Im glad we now have more options.
This channel is about the only gun channel that I still respect on RUclips, at least when it comes to concise, consistent, no political, none macho, informative, no lame music intro, no padding, and someone who actually knows on a technical level what they are doing unlike those bandwagon shill gun tubers😅, great informative consistent format, keep up the good work! 🎉
Thank you :)
You sayin' Buffman ain't Macho?!? Shame on you!!! :p jk jk jk
Your testing is probably the most useful thing on youtube other than videos showing how to get to some stupid bolt on my car.
AAC seems to be making good stuff, which is a pleasant surprised considering Palmetto seems to consider its early adopters unpaid prototype testers of their initial offerings. Combined with the price, and I think these guys are going to have some pretty decent success.
I just want a plinking load that hits 2500 FPS in my P90.
Bro want pierce armor😮
Bro wants to eat the cake before the batter is mixed. Baby steps 5.7 only just left monopoly status.
You have a full auto P90?

FMJ 5.7 seems to have better wound cavity than 5.7 hollow point. Heck, the temporary wound cavity seems to compare to some brands of 9mm hollow point.
That is because 5.7 should follow 5.56 rule. SPEED.
Not bad for a plinker, already better then the American Eagle shit
How do I order your ammo, everytime I look on your website it says everything is unavailable
I would like to know this as well
Piling on for answer
@@clicco11 It takes him a bit to get bullet supplies since they have to be turned..
@@BuffRANGE thanks for that. Any use for spent 5.7 brass for someone that doesn’t reload?
Appreciate all the 5.7 content, my man. I may possibly get into 5.7 somewhere down the line when the domestic MFGs come up with more SD related loads.
The way this thing performed here makes me think a sleeker, VLD style fmj (read: longer for same weight) that weighs 30-35gr or so, would be great for self defense.
I wonder how a 5.45x39 style 7n6 bullet or a similarly structured bullet would perform?
@@elburropeligroso4689 I was just thinking about that. Make a FMJBT with an aluminum insert like 5.45 or M855, with lead at the base. It would be longer than a 35gr bullet should be, and be rear-heavy. It would easily tumble.
AR57 12in: I believe a AR15 H3 buffer (5.6oz) can be substituted for Panzer's OEM AR57 Gen3 (4.82oz). H3 is a wee bit longer.
But H3 still short enough to lock the bolt back, and cycles fine even with heavier (Armaspec braided) spring.
Using the heavier AR15 H3 buffer, with heavier Sprinco/etc spring, may help stop neck bumping a smidge.
(Bonus: same lower setup works for Shortstroke Piston AR15 uppers too, known for tearing rims off cases with less than H3.)
The M&P 5.7 does not like the AAC ammo, or at least mine doesn't. You had the exact same failure to go into battery as what happens to my gun at 4:07 in this video. What is actually happening with the M&P is caused by it's unique feeding mechanism that I haven't seen on a pistol before (I'm still a noob- have only been around guns about 2 years). Unlike most guns, the M&P requires the extractor to ride over the rim of the case during chambering at the point where the slide stops. The bullet is fully seated in the chamber before the extractor rides over the rim. Most guns are designed that the rim of the case slides under the extractor during chambering. I don't know why the gun was designed in this fashion.
I don't know if the AAC ammo is just a tiny bit bigger or a tiny bit of a harder metal, but I get failure to go into battery about once a magazine with this combo. I get this same failure with other ammo types also, just not nearly as frequently.
Thanks palmetto!
I also found it interesting that many people demonstrate that the M&P flavor gives lower velocity, while that didn't seem to be the case here.
It’s 2-6% slower than the 5.2” Rock.
@@BuffRANGE oh, so what were you shooting in the first chrono, was it the control lot of another ammo? I was confused 🤔
it was the shorter ROCK...4.7" I think.
The 5.2" ROCK was ~3.6% faster than the M&P if my eyes can see the little font
@@ShastaBean yeah, I couldn't make out what ammo or exact gun was in use. Thank you two for clearing that up.
We just need an FMJBT load that uses a 2 piece core (aluminum in front, lead in back) and come shaped nose like a VMAX. 30-35gr. 2000fps from the handguns min. If one of big MFGs like FNH or AAC makes this, I'm officially in the 5.7 game.
Seems to be pretty good for general purpose ammo.
That's a LOT of smoke from that ammo. American Eagle Federal junk also smokes that way. I handload with VV N340 and True Blue and I wouldn't say that either of those produce much smoke.

That AR57 seems to have an abysmal recoil considering it is 5.7 with a 3 chamber brake.
Probably not enough gas volume to make use of the brake. Too little powder charge to be useful for that.
@@jdhill770 probably just needs the single brake.
Useful! My only gripe is that the gel track views from above are useless because of reflected sky light. ROLL the blocks sideways to give a view of the tops? Your black background behind the blocks is superior to most other reviewers using gel!............................elsullo

🇦🇺😎👍Hey Matt
Hey!
Is this made by Fiocchi? Thank you for doing a good job testing.
Made by Palmetto State Armory.
Are you shooting black powder in you P90?
Sometimes the weather conditions make muzzle blast smoke more visible :)
Just received 250 rounds.
Realistically speaking, if you compare this side by side with 380 Liberty civil defense which is going approximately 1600 FPS to this round which one do you think is more effective?
What is the chance of a R37x or F hollow point over penetrating. I tried having a discussion on different round for it and I was told multiple times it's only good for defeating body armor and generally larger diameter rounds a better for self defense or etc. What are your thoughts?
Thanks for your review!! I had 1/100 fail in my rock. Looks like you had maybe 1/250 and not clear if it was the M&P or the ammo right?
Correct not sure if that was the M&P or the ammo.
@@BuffRANGE understood.
@@triggerbarPhD guess I’ll have to buy more to run!
it depends on if you ask:
Smith - it was the ammo.
If you ask Palmetto - it was the M&P.
In your case, it was shooter-error. heh
Hey Buffman appreciate all your testing and vids. I've watched a TON of your armor test videos, but what would you suggest as the lightest plate in special threat or lvl4 that actually performs?
Do you require edge to edge protection of the strike face?
@@BuffRANGEi would say yes unless there is a drastic difference in performance between 2 options with a small difference in coverage.
@@dentron2 What threats would the special threat plate need to stop?
@@BuffRANGE m855
@@BuffRANGE i have heso L210s but want to either upgrade to 4 with the lightest weight possible or keep m855 protection but shave weight
i got a question , does the 5.7 round perform better when its higher or lower grain
So for self-defense I need to find something other than 5.7X28?
I'd recommend the AAC Vmax, or other loadings for self defense vs using the FMJ. If all you have is FMJ it's still viable, but not ideal.
@@BuffRANGE Please help me pick. I'm torn between a Keltec P50 and a Zastava M70. I see benefits in both. 50 rds to 30. Light kick to heavy. Compact to not. Stopping power. Thank you for your time. PS. I will be buying today if you respond soon enough.
Have you ever loaded M855A1 projectiles into 5.7x28?
Yes No stabilize :(
@@BuffRANGE 😕 to long of a projectile I assume.
correct me if im wrong. i'd like to see 2100 out of that p90 sbr, which is 7-8 inches ?
P90 SBR is a 10.4" barrel. Elite's Protector 1can hit that from a P90..
I’ve had good luck so far with the few hundred rounds I’ve put through my rock
So the question is for mass produced ammo does AAC have a fragmenting or defensive round or do we stick with FN/Fiocci? I don't really want a vmax round for that and obviously as discussed here fmj isn't ideal either. What is the consensus?
They don't have a defense/personal protection round yet. The Vmax is probably the only thing at this given velocity that will perform with acceptable SD/PP properties. It may not do barriers very well, but at the velocity the 5.7 achieves it's still going to penetrate past the 12" mark.
@@BuffRANGE ok so then I guess I'll stick with either the vanguard when I can afford it or the Fiocci fragmenting when I can't lol. Thanks so much for the info as always.
@@DRock1779The Fiocchi Fragmenting is a Hornady NTX bullet, and IMO would not be something desirable for PP/SD in 5.7. I need to gel test it to see how deep it goes.
@@BuffRANGE that's interesting as I was under the impression that fragmenting was good for defensive purposes (and the packaging indicates it's a defensive load too) I look forward to your test results.
I was wondering if at some point you'd consider doing a side by side comparison of the LC carbine and the 16" AR-57 as well.
@@DRock1779 It gets a little muddy with our 5.7. In a slower moving round like 9mm, you want expansion accompanied with the proper penetration depth as the wounding mechanisms based on velocity are not there in those calibers. So you want as much of the bullet as possible in it's path to crush/rip/break stuff.
When you get into rifle calibers you step across a threshold where velocity is high enough that it exceeds the elasticity of some soft tissues. Allowing the bullet to fragment apart can help send those fragments deep into the medium, while still allowing the core or a majority of those frags to reach penetration depths. Some rifle bullets that don't fragment then are going to tumble/yaw, and may in some tissued beings have WAY TOO much penetration. (think over 18-22").
5.7 falls into almost both of those categories. The slower 40gr stuff lacks the ability in the pistol to get to that 2000-2100 fps threshold. We want a majority of the bullet to reach 12"+. So in this case something that acts like a pistol round is going to be beneficial; IE the 40gr ballistic tip or even the Speer Gold Dot.
If we get into some of the 5.7 rounds that exceed 2100 fps fragmentation would be ideal, but a majority of them that can, those fragments don't reach more than 4-6" inside a medium and that is not ideal. You're left with a base that may only weigh 10-15 gr that possibly may get to the 12"+ depths. So we look at rifle bullet designs that will tumble and provide wounding that way. IE SS198LF, but it's problem it it's penetration depths. FN designed it to be limited risk, so it tops out 8-9". That's where things like T6B, BDF come into play. They are longer bullets, and lighter. They are above that velocity threshold from the pistol, and they penetrate 12"+. I myself pick those above the other available bullet choices :D
ill pass on all of aac ammo
Why is that?
@@BuffRANGE its low quality and generally weak.
I had hoped that AAC would put in some engineering to do away with that stupid coating. Seriously how hard can it be 🤬. I never heard about 4.6x30 having any and all other bottlenecks like 357 Sig run just fine without it
well .357 sig doesn't work off blowback :D and I belive 4.6 has a case taper
@@BuffRANGE thx! Didn’t think about differences in case geometry 🤔. So basically that could be considered a design flaw and the ship has sailed. Would be interesting to know if that lacquer was added later as a mitigation of issues identified too late for a design change
@@nikos6220 No it's not a flaw. The round was designed with it at the same time as the P90 and shortly after that the FsN pistol. It's not a flaw if it's part of the design.
@@EliteAmmunition And the reason for the design choice of no taper is so the P90 magazine can be straight and hold 50 rounds. Normal taper like 5.56 and .308 only does well with straight mags up to 20 rounds.
What is a reasonable price for Speer Gold Dots?
Honestly; Just shop around and find it where you can. A "reasonable price" is whatever is "reasonable" to you. At the moment I'm broke so nothing is reasonable; if I had an extra $300 right now I'd try to snag maybe 100-$150 worth of them.
