Great to see Jack Benny here. He passed in '74, his last appearance was a Dean Martin Roast. People today don't realize how big Benny was. He was the #1 comedian in America for like 40 years on radio and then TV. That's why even Rickles holds off insulting Benny - that's respect. Benny doesn't even get up when Rickles leaves - he doesn't have to - he's the big cheese. Born in Waukegan, IL down the road from me.
Arguably, it was Jack Benny who invented the "sitcom" as we know it today. He was the biggest from the late 1930's to the early 1960's. A little known fact is during World War Two, he traveled further, and entertained more troops, than Bob Hope!
Holy Crap! Finally, provocative and insightful correspondence! I can't tell you "YesYou" how many crazy and meaningless debates and replies I've had on here. You are probably spot on, and I never thought about that! The early days of entertainment, performers didn't have the TV networks and entertainment conglomerates of today which bow down to and kiss up to entertainers as if their gods. The former generation HAD to give it their all, or find a new business. Thanks, for the enlightenment. :)
Where was this video I’m seeing it for the first time I have watched all don rickles video Millione times over and over and thought I have watched it all , Jack Benny was the best also what refreshing I got now
Me too like I saw don videos Millione times and thought I have seen it all but they keep coming new I have got 2 that I haven’t seen I’m searching hunting now for a new one it will take months but it will be worth it
I've never seen this set of the Tonight Show before. Was it used for one or two nights? Its so strange to see Johnny without his desk. Its really the first time I see this set.
No, there is a clip earlier, when Don and Johnny were getting massaged and things turned chaotic, with Don pushing Johnny into a bath tub of water. I think that was when they were in New York. I found the clip, it is from 1969 and here it is = ruclips.net/video/nKRyNbCsGhs/видео.html
This you tube and their blocking of crap. I know this video wasn't blocked a few years ago, words I mean where they cut out stuff. In two more years why even have the video. Bunch of smucks and other words i have for google.
Always loved Rickles but was crushed when I saw him when he was older. Sadly, his subject matter had turned to the really dark side of humor using vulgar and explicit sexual language. I was shaking my head just wondering 'why'. Had his mind been this way all along? If not, was he needing money that badly? Did he think he was being 'cool'?
I can't watch his later stuff either cause it's just so out of place. Super racial and antagonistic while barely keeping the crowd on board. I hink those parts of his original act were impossible to promote while also being more acceptable back then as shock comedy. I don't know if he was always like that but you can see him struggling later in life. He personified a comedic archetype for decades and I think it just outlived it's relevance.
Look how agitated the guy sitting next to don rickles was, tired of the whole situation, u can see it all over his face, the crossed arms, the deep sigh, and the damn smoke and ashes on his tux, he was just completely done with the whole event
It was fresh at the time and out of his wheelhouse. Look up the stuff with Rickles in the 80's. He's much better at it then. Plus, he was less worried about complaint letters by then. Here, he's only 10 years on the job.
Simply the best. Rest In Peace Don.

'passed' where?
I hope to comic heaven!
Don even had class with that outfit.👍🏻👍🏻
And by the applause Jack, warm up the car we're in trouble. Brilliant.
For sure. So cool to have Jack Benny on there too.
Back when class existed in Hollywood.
Thankyou Mr Warmth for getting us thru this Pandemic 😉
4:55 what an absolute, correct statement
Vintage Don... 1972!!
50 years ago, when giant ruled the world👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
*The Man.*
*That's all that needs to be said ....*
🙂👍🏻♥️♥️♥️
"may you have ten more years"...
he had twenty more!
golden era personified
I love these they bring such joy growing up in those days thanks for posting .
I'm 30 years old and I used to watch don rickles on the tonight show with Jay leno and from that first time I saw I automatically loved him
These are great 👍.
Thank you for posting.....
So smooth Don is and also Johnny and Jack… Joey is certainly cool
Some serious talent up there. Brings back so many memories.
@@richardleclair473 - Would that such talent today existed! I will pray for America. Please pray for me. God Bless you.
I could sit and listened to them talk about nothing for an hour and be entertained. Today, most TV sucks! Why?
Johnny Carson and animals

T.V. today sucks do to the decay of respect for each other and all things reality.
because of social media.. it destroyed everything.. it spreads so much evil and propaganda..
Because liberals and cancel culture are busy taking all the fun out of poking fun of ourselves.

Fearless
Do you honestly know anyone who can perform like this? For that long, and always be funny?
im watching some johnny carson videos and i swear he aged like 15 years from 1969-1972...
@Gregory Papadopoulos he divorced in 1972 maybe it had something to do with his marriage.
@Gregory Papadopoulos
Carson coloured his hair in the 60's then stopped, making it look like he went grey suddenly.
The camera quality improved
Rickles combover is beyond frightening.
Seen Rickles many times after the combover, that being said, why don't u go skate on your face!
As Rickles would say “Drop your pants and fire a rocket!”
Smoke everywhere. ; )
What's this, London?
Oh way back.
1972.. wow
When late night television was great not like now
Twaddle.

Didn't know about the set without a desk,. Cool.
But this wasn't for long term, it was special occasion for Carson anniversary of his show.

This set was specially designed for this tenth anniversary show; Oct 2, 1972.
@@petesmitt oh wow. That's interesting. Thanks. No wonder I've never seen it before. So it was a once off.
@@johanbrand8601 yes; here's the whole show ruclips.net/video/8lRtnvBIY-4/видео.html&ab_channel=ClassicTVin4K
I remember watching this at the time!
Is this the earliest footage of Rickles on Carson?

Oh Venus is sick!
Comedy isn't as great anymore because it is not as witty...
Johnny is socially-distancing 😉
3:03 🤣🤣
Man to think Johnny was only 47 here! Looks like he’s 65
Yeah he still looks young. You can see in his face. Don't look at grey hair. I agree with Gregory.
I did not get Carson's poisoned remark. What did he say to Don?
"Now can we hear Humphrey Bogart?" Johnny was mocking Don's Jack Benny impression. Don idolized Benny.
Don looks a little like Billy Jack (Tom Laughlin)
They used to bring the Jewish thing all the time…

That was Joey Bishop, kind of his act.
Anyway Ugh 😂
The Martin Borman crack was totally out of line then and it hasn't aged well. I love Carson and Rickles but Carson could have done better IMHO.
why people found this man funny is beyond me.
Was Jack Benny really funny? Everytime he talks he puts me too sleep.
Jack Benny Sid Ceaser=unfunny. Rickles=the best ....
Carson was crap, trying to upstaged his guests all the time - David Letterman and Rickles were magic.
Michael .C lol...no.
Your comment is crap.
john milner he's somewhat right. Carson didn't really find the roasting funny.
