@@Mr_LMT_93 No, he was quoting from the Carson episode, when it WAS a new show just starting. Obviously now it's a very old show, thus making the OP feel very old.
Never fell for that staying up late for talk shows, maybe a few when I couldn't sleep, but not deliberately. Same with Saturday night live ,that was an hour or hour and a half shows with only 2 or 3 good skits.
Johnny Carson sucks. Broke the first rule of stand-up comedy… Never laugh at your own jokes. And that whole golf swing shit… He did that a lot at the end. Because his jokes didn't hit. He was too freaking old and should've listened to his writers instead of overruling them. Letterman did the same thing at the end. Steve Colbert would do well to avoid political humor and just concentrate on humor like he did on the Dana Carvey show
There is literally no one that was or is more entertaining on late night shows than Mr. Don Rickles. He is the epitome of laughter at its peak quality. I am so thankful to have found RUclips clips that show cases his acumen, for being 25 years of age, was unable to see him live. Rip Don, you simply are the greatest most respectful entertainer that will ever live. Thank you.
Back in the day when they understood that life is hard enough already and people needed entertainment to cheer up, not to discuss political correctness or identity politics.
Don Rickles was a genius of his time. So quick witted and a very loving man to all his piers who he outlived. Miss you Don. Thank God we have U tube I can still see you. RIP the laughter has now died! One word out of place now and sponsers run. Sad old world isn’t it. ❤
Rickles was killing it! I'm 56 yrs old, and in this era it was known as racial stereotypes. Not racism. He made fun of everyone including himself. There was no malice intendid. It was brutal but not mean. We really need to not take ourselves so serious. Sad.
I was born in 1969 and grew up on Carson, watching with my parents. Even as a young child, when I knew Rickles was on the show, I was just glued to the TV; even with a lot of his material going over my head. He was such an amazing performer.
Light hearted teasing, everyone got the joke...no political talk, no bashing of political figure..just pure entertainment. Miss those days. Michael Landon was a genius in his field, my kids grew up watching his shows. We owe him a debt of gratitude.
Like Rickles said, "Learn to laugh at ourselves". As someone that got picked on quite a bit in school, I learned this independent of Mr. Rickles' or Mr. Chappelle, two inspirational comedians/actors that helped me confirm what I thought I knew. If you learn to laugh at yourself, and make jokes about your own "quirks", it not only takes away the "fun" from the potential jerk/bully, but it helps them (that really are normally insecure themselves, not some afterschool special nonsense, based on actual experiences) open up/relax, as well as others. As people become more acquainted/comfortable, then the jokes about others come into play, but all in the sense of fun/sharing our own "issues", just in a bass-ackwards sort of way.
Michael Landon was absolutely amazing and I agree with you that we do owe him, what a generous man he was and what great lessons he tried to pass on,anyway take care regards Scott
I’m with you on the nostalgic sentiment 110%. Regarding your comments about, “everyone getting the joke; no political talk; no bashing of political figures” however, I once thought the same as you said But the more I’ve watched these vintage-era Carson and Letterman archives as an adult, I’ve come to the conclusion that both shows-especially Letterman-had plenty of “cringe”, “confrontational, and “political bashing” comedy. The difference is that a considerable portion of the performers were lifelong professionals capable of utilizing a seemingly effortless and masterfully deft genius, they could hide their more ‘edgy’-for lack of a better term-comedy underneath an unstoppable, lightning-fast stampeding barrage of ‘mass-appeal’ comedy that made me laugh so much and so loud, all their ‘edgy’ stuff went clear over my head as a kid. But it’s definitely there-especially on Letterman-and you can find it You just have to avoid asphyxiating from laughing at the oceanic volume of “surface level” jokes on the way down 🥳
My dad and I would stay up late just to watch this. It’s so nice to watch this . This brings back some wonderful memories. I don’t think this can ever be duplicated.

This is an example of a great interview of a bygone era. The banter of Michael Landon, Don Rickles, and Johnny Carson was 😂🤣. When Landon says what a fine actor Rickles actually is and Carson responds, "You can tell from the reaction people feel the same way." Johnny was a true magician of an interviewer being able to facilitate fun discussions with different personalities. They're all so relaxed.
Rickles used that audience reaction (or lack thereof) gag on many occasions. Carson zinged Rickles with Rickles own gag, and Rickles loved it. Johnny had many well timed zingers in his pocket, and that was one of them.

I wish I could have Michael Landon's laugh as a ring tone! Love him. Not only was he incredibly handsome with a full head of gorgeous wavy locks but he was also an incredibly talented storyteller. Every single one of his TV shows was successful and beloved because of the values they expressed and the depth of the characters he created. No one today produces content like that anymore. Sadly.

and in many instances , less apologetically , when set along side his performance in this clip which features a surprising number of disclaimers and sermons issued by Rickles before and after his "zingers". However, Rickles was granted special dispensation by the hypersensitive powers-that-be and their brain-dead disciples in his later years and wasn't 'called out'/taken to task over or criticized re: remarks or attitudes he expressed that had any other person today been a party to - they'd have been crucified.

It was Bob Hope , Dean Martin, George Global. From that night I fall in love with Dean Martin, i would go to bed early on Thursday just to watch Dean's show.... T.v. in kids room not really good idea but I am sure glad I had one so I could enjoy The Tonight Show 😊😊😊
same here
Used to watch the monologue before crashing every night but when Rickles was guest hosting, you weren’t getting that much sleep.
Listen to Don Rickles ‘ Hello Dummy ‘ record from 1960s Vegas act. It’s way too much
Bob J me too....life was simpler and entertainment was classic.... Now we are not allowed to leave our homes and we’re waiting for a virus to disappear 😷...
Sad.....
Little joe prabably drunk at this time
Think I’ve seen all of Don’s interviews with Carson but this is my favourite, Don was on top form in this interview and generally at this time in his career, the interplay between him, Michael and Johnny is fantastic to watch. RIP all 3 and Ed!
It’s great how don Rickles sprinkles in his love for people who helped him out along the way as he’s doing his comedy bit. He’s very grateful for the people who helped him become a star
Michael Landon has a NEW show, "Little House on the Prairie"... WOW I feel like I´m 100 years old.
Sorry, Michael Landon died in 1991, how does he have a new show or film?
@@Anna-kw9jv Yeah, I figured. Haha
@@Mr_LMT_93 No, he was quoting from the Carson episode, when it WAS a new show just starting. Obviously now it's a very old show, thus making the OP feel very old.
Anna who I was replying to, said "Maybe he's old?"
@@Mr_LMT_93Little House on the Prairie was a new show in the 1970’s when this tonight show was made.
Rickles and Williams together , unimaginable ...
Miss the days growing up watching Johnny every night before going to bed, great times.
Never fell for that staying up late for talk shows, maybe a few when I couldn't sleep, but not deliberately. Same with Saturday night live ,that was an hour or hour and a half shows with only 2 or 3 good skits.
It was a racist series.
Steve Colbert would do well to avoid political humor and just concentrate on humor like he did on the Dana Carvey show
Bill Lenderman ⭐️⭐️
Same.
Thank you.
I wish TV could be like this, now! This was so entertaining & funny! Michael Landon was very handsome here.
...Smoked like a stack and drank like a fish. ...Cost him thirty years of his life.
Those days are gone. 😢
He'd be canceled before he could get more than a few words out. But, you're exactly right, those days are long gone. 😢
You are SO RIGHT!!! I was so hooked on Jonny Carson that I couldn't go to sleep until I saw at least a part of his show!!!
Back in the day when they understood that life is hard enough already and people needed entertainment to cheer up, not to discuss political correctness or identity politics.
hawkiebaby I think it was like this up until about 8 years ago. Late night comedy completely changed in 2016.
@@hastycontemplation NO NO LATE NIGHT WAST THE SAME AFTER CARSON RETIRED = IT WENT STEADILY DOWNHILL TILL WHAT IT IS TODAY GARBISH

Back when men had wieners and women had tacos and not the other way around.
Rickles outlived them all.
I’m only 18 years old but this man is the funniest person I’ve ever seen, non stop comedic genius. Greatest comedian ever.
I'll bet you're really 50 years old
You missed the best tv shows, and the best music. Groovy clothes, too.
Carson wasn't the greatest.

I'm 23 and he's funny but I don't get half of what he says lol
You better believe it!
Sad.
Say that stuff today and you'd get sued by the ACLU.
AMEN to that........ say what they will ,,,, but ever since the left went wacky ,,,, they put a racial divide narrative through the country...

Yep politicians have made education of ppl to hate using the dictionary
oH puleeeze, HE WAS RACIST AS HELL. It was just acceptbale then. Now it isnt cool to be shitty .
Don Rickles was one of the funniest people ever. I tried to explain to my wife why I was so sad when he died but she couldn't understand.
I was born in 1969 and grew up on Carson, watching with my parents. Even as a young child, when I knew Rickles was on the show, I was just glued to the TV; even with a lot of his material going over my head. He was such an amazing performer.
We were lucky))
Regarding your comments about, “everyone getting the joke; no political talk; no bashing of political figures” however, I once thought the same as you said
But the more I’ve watched these vintage-era Carson and
Letterman archives as an adult, I’ve come to the conclusion that both shows-especially Letterman-had plenty of “cringe”, “confrontational, and “political bashing” comedy.
But it’s definitely there-especially on Letterman-and you can find it
You just have to avoid asphyxiating
from laughing at the oceanic volume of “surface level” jokes on the way down
🥳
Not only is Landon a classy guy, he is quick as a whip taking shots at Rickles. This is comedy gold.
Not many guys could go toe to toe with Rickles!!!!!
I have never hear one thing he said that was funny. Apparently he was a most decent guy but funny? No!
@@johnsilverman2538 agreed. Landon wasnt funny at all
A great comedy show with no foul language and very funny. How times have changed.
These guys were great! What a period of time.
My dad and I would stay up late just to watch this. It’s so nice to watch this . This brings back some wonderful memories. I don’t think this can ever be duplicated.
Today's generation should be made to watch Don Rickles. Make it mandatory to toughen them up.
This was before Late Night TV became a forum to try to destroy people. Was always worth watching!🤗
Seeing these guys makes me happy we have RUclips to call up these memories.
supergolfdude so true. It’s March 2020 and we’re stuck hiding in our homes because a virus is holding the world hostage. Can’t listen to another minute of the news. Came here for a very needed laugh! It helped!
If things keep the way they going it will be no more.
Rickles. The greatest insulter
Of all time ! And how did he get away with those jokes? We lost him in 2017 at the age of 90! What a loss!
When Rickles insulted someone, it meant he liked them!
He barely got away with it. But he did and it was the seventies. that's why.
He got away with it because everyone weren't so fragile back then
@@kylemitchell9813 Yup. All nationalities and all kinds were made fun of . We took it in stride. Have to say he did not touch the Jews too much though.

This is just Gold, One of my favorite episodes. Rickles was at the pinnacle of his career. Landon was amazing, he just put Rickles in his place. So much chemistry here. Watch the facial expressions on Rickles as Landon answered.
Landon was a bore. He killed the mood and didnt say one funny thing
Just a phenomenal episode. Rickles isn't even trying and he keeps everybody laughing.
+Craig Cox I've been a rat pack and rickles fan for long... i used to think rickels was really really talented, this and a few other sequences confirm his sheer genius.
One of my fave epis of this show. Perfect all around .I was too young back then to ever watch this late at night. My loss .Never knew what I was missing.
humour like this would be totally unacceptable today SADLY
NOTHING IS BETTER THAN THIS
i wanna be with you guys so bad 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🙂
I remember it was cool staying up late to watch Johnny. I was 13 when this was on.
Same here I would stay up from late 1960 Thur high school in 1975, realize what real talent was. Now days can't stand t.v shows. I just watch RUclips for my entertainment.
Jack Parr was the ultimate conversationalist. He preseded Johnny and was funnier. He picked guests for their wit, not for their latest movie.
Anyone who can laugh at themselves and their family first, is funny... love him to bits, lovely guy..
Man, I miss these guys! Some of the best, honest, most spontaneous live television ever! Carson was a master at his craft, as was Rickles! I was 28 when this show aired, and I remember it like yesterday. Great days!

Classic...Landon was known as a great guy--bright with a dry sense of humour...Rickles in his element, as usual--none better
It's insane to me that there was a time when actors had any personality to speak of, let alone could go line for line with Rickles. Great video.
People are still people. Actors today are just as witty (or not witty) as they were 40, 50 or 80 years ago. People are still people.
@@trekkiejunk And the ontological dramas of people who become actors play out in both public and private. We are both correct.
@@trekkiejunk Ehhh, honestly though I've been analyzing the actors/comedians of this generation. They are all acting in accordance to politics and the ones who don't, get squished.

Sadly.
His laugh is one of a kind.
you can. i have the original tarzan call

Another one who left us too soon; Michael Landon.
Just classic. For the people who said Rickles couldn't do this today, he was doing this almost until the day he died.
and in many instances , less apologetically , when set along side his performance in this clip which features a surprising number of disclaimers and sermons issued by Rickles before and after his "zingers". However, Rickles was granted special dispensation by the hypersensitive powers-that-be and their brain-dead disciples in his later years and wasn't 'called out'/taken to task over or criticized re: remarks or attitudes he expressed that had any other person today been a party to - they'd have been crucified.

I have been a devoted fan of Johnny Carson since the age of 17 beginning with this show taped in 1974 with Don Rickles and Michael Landon, who were fantastic together as guests, along with their host Johnny Carson. My other favorite episode is the one in 1969 with Bob Hope, Dean Martin and George Gobel. when the three of them got quite tipsy sharing Dean Martin's very strong cocktail. This episode is also so extremely funny that my husband and I don't mind watching it repeatedly along along with the one with George Gobel and Dean Martin taped in 1969.Thank you so very much johnny for leaving us with this precious and hysterically funny collection of your incredible talent.I can hardly wait to meet you in person.See you on the other side!!!
