I would try using a cheap PA mic or a bass amp those are going to have a bigger frequency range to get better sound. I used a bass amp on my alesis drum set and it sounds pretty good.
I have a Line 6 Guitar amp 120watt the speaker echo outside. I gor for a good deal. I max out the master, volume max out all the setting. I use for metal ans some rock.
