I've been using Clone Hero to learn how to play drums and it's actually really great and I recommend it to anyone who's getting into drums. I don't have any friends that play instruments, so I don't have anyone I can jam along with and learn with, so Clone Hero makes things easier and more fun than just trying to learn alone

Clone hero is tons of fun and this new version is really great. The only real deficiencies I can think of are that most charts don't convey dynamics, or which part of the cymbal you're meant to hit, but that's something you can pick up on just from playing through or listening through songs. I do wish there were a click track option, but since it's always developing, maybe one day they'll add it.
Also snare flams. Rock band started this thing where those are played with red and yellow, which made sense at the time, since their drums didn't really have much in the way of velocity detection, but that's also a pretty minor drawback.

For the Alesis Nitro Max, do I need a laptop to just play? I just started lessons at Guitar Center and I have just enough to buy a Nitro Max kit and a throne. But I don’t have enough to buy headphones yet. Can you tell me how the sound comes out of the kit and what I need to just play without any programs to guide me since I’ll be learning from a person? Thanks! Your videos have helped me so much!!!

Hey might I suggest you check YARG as well?
The thing with YARG is if you have a specific MIDI guitar you can get your friend to connect a real guitar to it as well and play a few songs like you would in a real guitar. That would be the true band experience! I haven't seen anyone do that yet though also you (the guitarist and bassist) have to know the song first because the interface for the string instrument is horrible (unlike rocksmith which is pretty good).

It's a bit of a legal gray area, so he didn't mention it, nor can I really give specifics. Best I can say is check the fretsonfire forums, or if you find playthroughs of custom songs here on youtube, there will often be links to charts or collections of charts in the description

What MIDI interface did you use. I have an Alesis nitro drum set, but I can't seem to have it recognized in clone hero. Thanks for creating this video. Any help is appreciated.

Hope this comment isnt too late. I had some trouble at first but found that on the main menu after youve logged into your profile, you hit enter and select the midi device options then hit up to select the alesis nitro

@@DadReviews i think the only issue with this, is that the devs for Moonscraper (the software used for charting songs, if you hadn't known this) would also have to add support for lyric charting. it'd be interesting to see implemented for sure, but, it'd probably be hella difficult to implement properly.

clone hero was never made to "learn people how to play instruments" in the first place really to be fair
it's just a fun rhythm game

@@DadReviews It's a gear4music DD400, a pretty cheap generic kit here in the UK. At first I set it up with a midi to DX and vJoy combo but then found that the OB version of clone hero supports it direct so didn't need any if that. I'm still exploring the ins and Outs of Clone hero. Still searching for good easy songs for kids with drum parts.

@@milestudor Here's a spreadsheet of a bunch of links to songs for Clone Hero. There's a link on the right side that says Search for Songs (Chorus). I use that, just make sure that the song you pick has drums for it. There are symbols denoting which instruments the song supports. My son started by playing Beat It (Michael Jackson) and Walking on the Sun (Smashmouth) . Hope this helps. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_Ooo9hgpxl4SOb8H5EL1D1wWu8NVUSB5NT-YHIZeFws/edit#gid=0

I've played this game since 2017, it's gone very far in how well it plays and how universal it is. I can vouch that it is incredibly fun to play, especially on drums.
(Btw, I am looking for people to play with online! :P)
I highly recommend going to people's google drives or spreadsheets as you can get well over 20,000 songs and charts, it really is incredible and very community focused. If you're looking to playcompetitively, I highly recommend checking out scorespy. In short it's a clone hero plugin that has anti-christ features and a leaderboards system. Good stuff!
