1/25 AMT Barris Ala Kart-White Glue Review

  • It's time for another White Glue Review! This time I've built the AMT George Barris Ala-Kart show rod. This was an all new tooling for AMT back in the Mueller era (2002) and the details and fitting reflect that. Watch as I not only show the contents of the box, but I assemble the whole kit in white glue and then give my thoughts on the build itself.

    Thanks everyone for all of your support for the channel. I am truly enjoying building these kits in white glue and I recommend that you do the same. Building them in white glue shows you all of the fitment issues and you learn how to assemble the kit well before prep, primer, paint. It also is a good thing to get you out of a builder slump!

    How do you remove the white glue?

    • @ScaleModelExperiment
      @ScaleModelExperiment  5 месяцев назад +4

      It’s so simple, you just pull the parts apart and the glue just peels right off. No harm no damage to the kit at all.

    I built this kit last year and I really enjoyed the build. Yes, it's finicky and the fit of body/bed to fender assembly is tight but the biggest challenge I found was the hood fit. It took me a while, but I finally got it.

    How long is the drying time?

    • @ScaleModelExperiment

      Thanks for watching! The whole purpose of the white glue review is to check fitment of a model kit before paint. Nothing worse than painting parts to perfection only to ruin them because of a fit issue. The white glue holds the parts in place temporarily and can be easily taken apart for paint after fit is checked.

      Hi Dwight, as I said in the video if you spent all of the time painting, decaling and polishing every part and when it came time to assemble it you would quickly find out that you need to ruin all of your work adjusting it to fit. By assembling it in white glue you find all of the fit issues to solve before paint. Or just watch my review and make the adjustments…

    Hi I’m a first time watcher and I recently obtained this kit, it came along in one of those three packs AMT offers along with some paint and glue. But I’m wondering if one of your previous videos goes into why you use white glue. Is it meant to be permanent?

    • @ScaleModelExperiment
      @ScaleModelExperiment  5 месяцев назад

      Welcome to the channel. I do white glue reviews to temporarily assemble kits to check for fit issues before prepping for paint. It actually saves a lot of aggravation later down the road if you do the pre-work. Have a look around at my other videos and you’ll find that I focus on box stock building of model cars to contest quality finishes. Leave questions on any video and I’ll respond. Again, welcome! • @ScaleModelExperiment

      The white glue is Tamiya craft bond. It is stronger than Elmer’s but weaker than canopy white glue.

    I'm from the era when this kit was originally released. Several friends built it without concerns on fit and finish. I'm a bit alarmed to see the problem you had with the re-issue. Kits should not require a "Dremel" tool to modify the kit just to get parts to fit correctly. This doesn't paint a good picture for new builders or someone without the skills or tools to do so. Where was this kit built?, I know the original was USA sourced.

    • @ScaleModelExperiment
      @ScaleModelExperiment  5 месяцев назад +1

      I don’t know where the kit was produced. I personally think that the tolerances were designed to tight and precise. There were positive mounting points for all the parts but it was simply too tight a fit. A little trim here and there and it will fit fine. It was not my intention to bash the kit, just to provide a warning to the builder I do appreciate you watching and leaving your thoughts.

      This isn't the original 1964 Ala-Kart as parts of the tooling inserts were lost over time. This was a modern (at the end of the AMT/Ertl era) remake of the original.

  • @jasonrothgeb6071
    @jasonrothgeb6071 5 месяцев назад

    Writing this a quarter way into the video, so it may be mentioned yet, but you have provided no background on the 1:1 or kit. I feel the reason this is important is there are TWO invidual toolings of this truck. One contemporary with the truck in the Sixties and a clean sheet retooling this century. I will say, if anyone under the age of 60 has one, they almost certainly have the 2nd tooling.

    • @ScaleModelExperiment
      @ScaleModelExperiment  5 месяцев назад +1

      You are correct Jason, I put the assumption on the viewer to know who George Barris is, what the Ala-Kart is and that this is the 2002 retool of the kit.

    • @jasonrothgeb6071
      @jasonrothgeb6071 5 месяцев назад

      @@ScaleModelExperiment Thanks for your note! How time flies. I first took an interest and learned about this Show Rod in 2002 when the 2.0 tooling hit the shelves. In the 22 years since this "new tooling" was releleased the creator of the 1:1 vehicle has since passed (2015 R.I.P George). I would hope the driving force behind the 2nd tooling is well, but the actuarial odds are not in his favor. All this to say, now that you have done a test assembly and analysis of the 2nd tooling (those ejector pin marks are brutal!), would you consider doing the same on the original tooling?

    • @ScaleModelExperiment
      @ScaleModelExperiment  5 месяцев назад +1

      @jasonrothgeb6071 sure, send it to me and I’ll build it 😜 seriously I have plenty of kits to review in my stash. On to the next one…

    • @jasonrothgeb6071
      @jasonrothgeb6071 5 месяцев назад

      Fair enough. Most of that kit is (fairly) obtainable though in the form of some 2 n' 1? 3 n' 1? Kit from the RC2 era. I think it was only a couple of pieces like the grill shell and maybe another couple of pieces which were lost to the ages. And even then, there was a resin caster repoping those pieces. But, that was 22 years ago. I have a new tool, which I stumbled across in a stash dig recently. And now, armed with your test assembly video, and a Testors Extreme White Metallic which came to market many years after the Ala Kart's release, I might have a better chance of starting it and getting it done. As you can tell from my many enthusiastic responses, I enjoyed this video. It was liked ,commented on, and I long ago subscribed.
