Special stat was wild back in Gen 1. I have to wonder if they did it that way because they were so tight on space and couldn't afford an extra stat for each Pokémon. It definitely made a difference in this run, there were attacks survived that couldn't be otherwise, and allowed you to avoid breaking down and using Double Team or Mimic. Hitmonlee just looks so incredibly weird to me. Still one of the weirdest Pokémon designs all the way to the current day. What even is it supposed to be?

@@RBYPokemonChallenges Machamp could have been the best fighting pokemon in gen 1 if it had a fighting move,at least in competitive. Machamp is better off without a set up move , because karate chop's high critical hit rate will likely bypass the given boosts anyways.🤔

hitmonchan is wayyyy worse than hitmonlee in gen 1 (not that i dont agree that lee got done dirty) it even got a lower base stat total, worse moves, no meditate and no good fighting move
It doesn't have a lower base stat total than Hitmonlee. They're both at either 345 or 380 (depending on how you calculate the Special Stat). Hitmonchan does however have worst stat distribution, since compared to Hitmonlee it subtracts 15 in attack and 11 in speed and puts it all in defense (which is a bad stat to invest in when you're still so frail and your strongest STAB move is an 80 BP recoil move with bad accuracy).

It's a bit different for something like Scyther using Slash, where it has a guaranteed Crit bypassing all stat boosts, so Focus Energy is a relaly good strategy there. Here, we're not critting THAT much, just a couple of annoying losses to poorly times crits.
RBY: We're not going to learn focus energy because it's bugged and lowers crit-hit rate Also RBY: We don't want crits with focus energy we'd not have to worry about crits as much and it'd probably be more consistent?
I understand minimum battles conceptually as a standard to play by, but do you feel the backtrack is faster than just adding the battle while you're already on nugget bridge/bills house?
@@RBYPokemonChallenges Gotcha. That was my question, whether doubling back was faster or it was worth taking the battle but getting the move set option earlier offsetting that in total time. Probably depends on the trainer. If you had to fight one Pidgey it may be worth it versus 6 Kadabra.
I agree. Body Slam was locked behind an optional trainer so unobtainable on minimum battles, which adds a bit more challenge, but getting Body Slam makes this Pokemon MUCH better
Honestly, could probably have saved yourself some resets and runtime by either not using Meditate or using it less for a lot of these fights, because you were taking too much damage on setup and the ranges didn't improve much of the time.
I can agree with that. This was a first run and not in any way pre-routed or optimized, but I found in a lot of fights as well that I was overdoing it on setups. The only case where I was occasionally under-buffing were some of the late game fights where one more badge boost would let me outspeed a key threat (Blaine's Arcanine, Rival's Kadabra, Agatha's final Gengar, Lance's Aerodactyl), so I think with proper mapping the Meditates could have been optimized in a lot of spots
4 Badges normally increase stats by 12.5%: Boulder Badge - +12.5% Attack Thunder Badge - +12.5% Defense (Surge incorrectly says it increases Speed because he's just a trashman afterall) Soul Badge - +12.5% Speed Volcano Badge - +12.5% Special This 12.5% increase is intended and is not a glitch. When is battle, the game engine factors in the boost when a stat is change. For example, if the opponent uses Leer on you, it lowers your Defense basic stat and then applies the 12.5% increase to it if you have the Thunder Badge. The problem is that the game adds on all of the badge boosts at this step instead of just applying the boost to the altered stat. So when you have the Boulder Badge and Thunder Badge, a Leer lowers your defense, the game correctly re-applies the 12.5% boost to your defense at the end of the calculation, but it also mistakenly applies a 12.5% boost to your attack stat due to the Boulder Badge. This effect can technically be stacked infinitely until the stat reaches 999. So if you go watch some of my older videos, you'll see situations, especially in rEd/Blue against the Champion's Rhydon, where I let him use Tail Whip and Leer on me over and over until my Attack and Special and Speed hit 999 and enable me to OHKO all of his remaining Pokemon.
