Aimee Mullins is an American athlete, model and actress. In 1998, Lee McQueen selected her to appear on the cover of his guest-edited issue of Dazed & Confused, shot by Nick Knight. Off the back of this famous 'Fashion-able' editorial, Mullins went on to model in the Alexander McQueen S/S 99 'No.13' show, wearing a pair of prosthetic legs hand-carved from solid ash.

Mrs. Robert Jacobs, comment is not from Robert. I am so glad you said, "I don't know much about her" because I just last night saw her as a woman who define American culture on PBS. In fact, it is on again, right now, here in Phoenix. She is one of 8 or 10 women, & I found her inspiring!! To overcome having your legs taken from you, at age 1, had to be a huge obstacle to climb! So, now into her 40's, still doing speaking engagements, personal appearances, & the like, gives people like you & I a chance to know this person. Until last night, I never heard her name. I say, keep on goin Aimee!!!

Recently I keep reading plenty of bad or negative things about this Aimee. I've only seen her in Cremaster, that Debra Messing drama, and in something where she played a 40 something year old mother. So I don't know much about her.
But, I just wanted to say that I keep reading things like she's living on past glories of her athletic days or modelling days which ended 15-20 years ago - and how she only competed internationally ONCE at the paralympics, and walked the runway only ONCE, and her days of mag covers are also long gone. I guess that's all true, but why should she turn down opportunities like this if people in the athletic world or modelling world STILL want her? Won't most of us do these things if we could? Past glories yes, but the industry (or some of the industry like McQueen) seems to think she's still relevant, so we can't fault her for taking advantage of this. Some say she wouldn't have had the McQueen chance or the covers if not for her beauty. So? Yes, she's slim, pretty and maybe even tall - so she shouldn't take advantage of this? She has to say no to opportunities just coz they came to her because of how she looks? Doesn't make sense if you expect her to say no. No person would say no.
Besides, what would you want her to do? I've seen her acting, and it isn't out of this world. Her acting is average, just alright, and nothing to write home about. Plus she's 40 years old!! Unless she's willing to be a sex object like Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct and do something VERY shocking like flashing her naked vag (maybe Aimee won't mind coz she was naked in Cremaster) - producers won't hire her as a female lead for big budget movies given her age. Maybe she wouldn't mind degrading herself into a sex object, then fine, she might get her big break, but at 40 years old, I highly doubt it'll happen. Sharon Stone was 34 and already was considered 'old' back then. It's not right and it's age-ist but that's Hollywood, they'd never dare show a sexy and naked 40 year old in a leading role.
Then come the comments about how she's such a 'loser' with 'nothing better to do in life' and sits on sets all day long waiting for her boyfriend to finish shooting. Well, what else is she supposed to do? It's not like she has an acting career or superb acting skills. She probably has a lot of free time. I bet most of these people would love to spend all day with THEIR boyfriends. Although personally i find it unprofessional and weird to be at my man's workplace - but maybe she gets permission or wants to keep an eye on her man. Whatever it is, that's between her and the producer who is in charge of that set.
So I don't get the hatred and negativity for Aimee. I don't see any problem with her living on her past achievements coz if people want her to give talks or attend events because of her past, and probably PAY her for it - why shouldn't she do them? Sure she accomplished a LOT in her early years, MUCH more than anyone her age at the time usually would've achieved, so kudos to her, she can now be a 15 year semi-retiree at 40 (I wish I was one at 32!), and live off past glories, and spend all day and night sitting on sets waiting for her boyfriend. What so wrong in that? Maybe that's the life she wants. Maybe that's the life that fulfills her completely.
