My wife got me this telescope for Christmas, I’ve totally been using it wrong. Thank you for the demonstration, now I feel like I’ve learned something and can give this a real attempt. It’s tough being a beginner! Great video!
This was my first ever scope, it was given to me as a Xmas present. I had read that the optics that came with it were very limited, so I preemptively bought myself a full Celestron optic set too. The first thing I looked at was the great nebula in Orion, and standing in my dark garden on that freezing Christmas night seeing that distant smudge of white light completely blew my mind. Then the craters of the moon. Then the bands of Jupiter. Then the rings of Saturn and its line of bright moons. This scope felt like cheap plastic, the mount was clunky and wobbled a lot, but the things it showed me were more precious than diamonds. Unforgettable.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video, and providing us with your knowledge, and the great info content. I bought this Beginners Budget telescope, as I am a Beginner, and Like what I am seeing. I bought a 2x barlow and some filters, and I was looking at some better eye pieces like, Celestron X-Cel LX Series Eyepiece - 1.25-Inch 12mm & 5mm.
Congrats Gary! At some point of time, try to buy a basic Go to mount from Celestron or Explore scientific or Orion. You don't need expensive one, or even used one might work. The mount is too much of a beginner mount and I would recommend replacing it!

Thank you for the video. I just got the telescope and the instructions it came with see out dates. Can you do a video about the eye pieces that it comes with and when to use them?
Small correction for newcomers to astronomy: "Field of View = What you can see in the eye piece" is a bit vague. The field of view (FOV) is *how much of the sky* you can see in the eye piece. If you have a high focal length (FL), you have a small or narrow field of view. If you have a low focal length, the field is larger. Having a large field of view will mean you can see more of the sky at once, but your *resolution* is lower. This means, for example if you take a picture, you will cover less arcseconds per pixel. Or if you observe a planet with a large FOV, it will appear small. Generally small FOVs are very difficult to track by hand so I recommend not purchasing a telescope with a high focal length to start off, unless you also get motorized tracking. Oh, and if you only want to do visual observation, you will see much more with a dobsonian telescope with a large aperture for the same price. Not as great for photography, though But question for Ray: For newcomers to astrophotography specifically, would you not recommend to spend 200$ on a tracking mount for a DSLR rather than on an unmotorized low/medium-quality telescope? Having high-quality equipment and tracking will surely produce nicer pictures at a low FL (tracked camera with lens, widefield) rather than beginner equipment with a higher FL (astromaster 130), right? I am curious on your opinion. Either way thanks for the upload and explanation of this telescope for newcomers, I am looking forward to the next video!

Thank you for the video. I just got the telescope and the instructions it came with see out dates. Can you do a video about the eye pieces that it comes with and when to use them?
There is nothing much to eye pieces other than using them. what questions you have?
Small correction for newcomers to astronomy:
"Field of View = What you can see in the eye piece" is a bit vague.
Not as great for photography, though
But question for Ray: For newcomers to astrophotography specifically, would you not recommend to spend 200$ on a tracking mount for a DSLR rather than on an unmotorized low/medium-quality telescope? Having high-quality equipment and tracking will surely produce nicer pictures at a low FL (tracked camera with lens, widefield) rather than beginner equipment with a higher FL (astromaster 130), right? I am curious on your opinion.
Either way thanks for the upload and explanation of this telescope for newcomers, I am looking forward to the next video!
Agreed Mark!

Specifically for Celestron Astromaster 130 EQ
This is very helpful....I ordered Celestron Astromaster 130, I am a very beginner to this kinda stuff ...can you suggest any lense other than what they have given to get more out of this piece.
Thanks FS! Please check the latest video too. I have some comparisons!
Did you ever do a collimation video on this 130 telescope? Can you link it to me if you have? Very useful video.
Thanks Gary! I have not created the collimation video for Astromaster 130 yet. I will be working on it soon.
Hi Ray. Nice video. I wish more entry level equatorial setups had RA motor drives as standard. I know you can buy them as a accessory, but It doesn't take long for people to want to share what they're seeing through their scope with a camera :)
That's right DIY Astro! No one can watch and keep it to themselves! Camera is a must to share the story :-)
Thanks for the knowledge Ray !!
Thanks Jeffery!

Hi Ray, I have this telescope and captured good pictures of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Moon and eclipses. From past few days I am trying to identify and capture Andromeda galaxy but all my efforts are going in vain. It would be really helpful if you could suggest the capabilities of these small telescopes, means what we can see and capture.
Excellent Surendra! What camera are you using?
@@RaysAstrophotography Actually I am using my mobile camera only 😅Before investing much in other equipments I want test myself that how much use I can make out of my current resources, as here in India astronomy related things are not easily available even if available then they are very expensive.
very good guide,,,how about powerseeker 70EQ guide..??
Very similar functionality
Great video Ray i just bought one of these about two weeks ago it's my first proper telescope i've bought and i've had some horrible cheap ones in the past ,i captured some good images of Jupiter and some hazy ones of Saturn from my Nikon D5200 with 5x Barlow,i will at some stage do away with the Nikon and get an electronic eyepiece due to constant battery changes when connected to my laptop, love your videos you earned another subscription from me :-)
Very cool DNH! I am glad! Clear Skies!
