- The Staten Island Railway is a rapid transit line in the New York City borough of Staten Island. SIR operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing local service between St. George and Tottenville, along the east side of the island. It is the only line on the island - there is no direct rail link between the SIR and the New York City Subway system. Here are several video clips showing various parts of this bucolic line. Enjoy!

I'm a native New Yorker and I had absolutely no idea they had a Staten Island Railroad always thought it was a small island you could get around by bike
Staten Island is huge. It might be the biggest borough of them all. Also the Staten Island railroad used to have more lines but unfortunately there is now just one in eastern Staten Island. In west Staten Island there is a big container terminal with freight trains.
@@ROTE Thank You!!
Have you never noticed the Staten Island Railway clearly labeled on the subway map?
And omce there were three branches, only one of them survived. www.gretschviking.net/GOSIRTPagePartTwo.htm
@@ROTE No Queen's is the largest and then come's Bklyn. "I believe SI is the 3rd largest borough"
As a Staten islander who lives near the SIR I think SIR gets made fun of and people call it a “Subway” but it contains railroad tracks like LIRR and goes out. Ik the NYC Subway exits to go outside but technically it’s mostly inside but the SIR in my opinion is one of the most interesting railroad for Staten island
People who call it a “subway” are plain out stupid. It isn’t a subway because first off, it isn’t even connected to one. Second of all, the railway has BL20Gs locomotives AND B&O Railroad signals. Lastly, if it were to be a subway it would be SIS (Staten Island Subway)
@@youminholastransit3218 Typically, when people call it a “subway” they are referring to the equipment used. The railroad is more like a short commuter railroad, but the cars are still subway cars.
@@youminholastransit3218 so true
That's exactly what it is 🛤️. I remember when the name was S.I.R.T.O.A.
Staten Island Rail Transit Operating Authority
It's overseen by the NYC Transit Department of Subways, it uses subway cars (currently R44s, with it slated to get the newest R211s along with the Subway's B Division), it appears on the subway map, it has a subway-style route bullet, and its service status is listed with the subway lines at the MTA's website. It may not have originated as a subway line, but it has fully evolved into one. It's just disconnected from the rest of the system.
It’s like a hybrid mix between LIRR and NYC subway.
The horns on the SIRR sound like the MTA Subway Work Service and the PATH from NY to NJ
@@christianfigueroa8805 It's because they are the same!
They also sound like the horns on the MBTA
The Staten Island Railway is a "Railroad" ie subject to Federal Railroaf Administration(FRA) rules not Federal Transit Administration rules. SIR has a few exemptions the biggest is Ditch Lites, the two flashing bright lites on the front of locomotives, in addition to a single headline. FRA granted the exemption because of a fenced off right of way with no grade crossing s.
Also SIR operates under a federal railroad charter, not a local
transit authority.
It is a unique operation in many ways.
It also has a Railroad like Horn not a typical rapid transit one
Ummm they haven't been a FRA Railroad since 1991. They lost that status when they officially abandoned the North Shore Line on paper. Nice try though.
@@CaseysTrains Eh, what's being thirty years out of date hen talking railroad history?
@@CaseysTrains whats with you being a snappy and toxic person? "Nice try" like what lmao
@@CaseysTrains Fun Fact: There used be a North Shore line in Chicago.
Rode it once. The R44s were run down and the track was bumpy. Interesting to see they maintained the original numbers - the numbers on the subway version were all changed
At Least The SIR Is Getting R211s Soooo...
I've been taking these trains since 1967, when I was about 6 years old, so I remember when the R44s were brand new. We lived in Great Kills, and the SIRT station was a hangout for us in our pre-teen days. The tracks were very accessible and when going across town we just used to cut across the tracks at Colon Ave. or Lindenwood Road. This was a daily thing when we went to PS 8 (before PS 32 opened) and later on when we went to IS 24, which was on the other side of the tracks from where we lived. Otherwise you had to walk all the way down to the station and cross over the trestle, and that put you about 3 blocks out of your way, so who was going to do that?
One of the "fun" things to do was climb up on the roof of the shelter over the platform, jump onto the train when it pulled in, and "surf" the car up to Bay Terrace or New Dorp. I have to admit I never did this myself. That was cheap thrills for the older kids and by the time I was older the R44s were in and nobody did it any more. I guess those smooth tops were harder to hold on to.
13:24 That roll sign can’t decide where the hell to go! 😂
These r44 on the Staten Island railway are very old.
They are the oldest subway cars in service now
Eventually they will be replaced with certain R211's
They are older than the old SIR cars they replaced 50 years ago!
But also very fast compared to all of the other equipment in the NYC area.
@@kaifreeman294 I think r211 is a mistake for SIR. That is a cruiser line and SIR should have the front facing seats like r44.
SIR is my favorite place to railfan since 2019
Never rode the SIR before, but great to see
Me either. I might go out there soon before the R44Ms retire around 2023 - 25, and by that time, you will probably start to see more and more R211's as it's replacement until order is complete.
@@sethmtanyct I have when I flew myself back to New York this girl I hooked up with loved in Staten Island so I had to take that to get to her house
@@Rayster.556 Interesting.
@@Rayster.556 You took the train to get some Pus- Pizza!!
That train Staten island Railway is so cool it's like a less crowded version of mta new York City transit
Nice! I recently took a trip down there myself, the SIR is unique and those R44s are fast 💨
By FRA rules and regulations, those R44's are considered locomotives for the even numbered cars, and the FRA would NOT grant the MTA permission to neuter their R44's down to 35-40 MPH like all of their other subway cars were after the Williamsburg Bridge Crash back in 1995.
@@robertko5425 interesting....
@@robertko5425 Source? Never heard of this. I am pretty sure they didn’t remove the last stages of field shunting on the SI R44s because the signal blocks being too short is not an issue over there, and also there are no stop arms.
@@youminholastransit3218 Thanks Brother.
@@amtrak706 They have the "NORAC" BOOK OF RULES - that they have to comply with, because their new signal system is also based on the B&O's signal system, and their train operators are NOT classified as motorman or motorwoman. They are still classified as RR Engineers as per NORAC because they were GRANDFATHERED-IN by these RAILROAD rules and regulations when the City of New York & the MTA bought them out from the B&O back in 1971, since they are also qualified to operate diesel locomotives and freight trains as well. Notice that before they leave Saint George or Tottenville, they have to charge-up the train and dump it, and recharge same before leaving their respective terminals. Otherwise - NO DICE !!! THIW's for them.
There was a plan to dig a tunnel under the Narrows to connect the SIR to the BMT (I think the line to Ft. Hamilton in Brooklyn). Purportedly, Robert Moses scotched the plan and built the Narrows Bridge instead.
The R TRAIN at 95th street.
The construction started but never was Completed
There are now some proposals to finish the Staten Island Tunnel. However I doubt it will be finished in thee near future.
@@ROTE there is an area behind the back wall of the 95th street station that was set up for further extention shore road and 101st street where another station would be built as a jump off point for a tunnel under the narrows to staten Island. But it was scrapped in favor of the VZNB 🌉
@@purplesword5536 Yeah 95th st sounds so random, why would they of built the subway there and just stopped.
I believe the R44’s are technically the worlds fastest subway train cars they could hit 87mph
They supposedly did that in hopes of running on the 2nd ave subway, but 87mph sounds too fast imo.
@@42luke93 it's great tho, admit it 😂
The bullet assigned for New York City Subway to Staten Island Railway is a blue bullet with SIR initials
All stations are free except the St. George Ferry if you enter you pay the fare, if you gonna exit you pay the fare and the bus transfer is free
Tompkinsville isn’t free
I could smell and hear YouMinHoLa’s Transit foaming in the comments
LOL
LMFAOOOOO
LOL
Though actually he did record the video
LMAOO
@@TheProD3V wait YouMin actually recorded these? These are actually good videos. What is he not good at? Lol
Some of these stations could do with a good coat of paint! Also a full length roof over the platforms would be nice too
This was a steam powered railroad in the beginning with 2 branches. It carried passengers and freight.
5:54 R44 SIR door chime be like
It's sad that the R44 never ran on the second Avenue line.
Now they do, the R46 twin
It would be cool if they could do more. Maybe stretch out the network a bit more if possible. Also if the subway could connect to the railway it would be a great convenience.
Right!! Maybe connect the suburbs too as well as have separate north shore and south shore dedicated lines, maybe some inter shore lines too
Good news! MTA is now planning elevate transit, zoning for accessibility this year! : )
I'm glad that the MTA is elevating something and a lot of more things to
@@leecornwell1062 Yes. Thanks for replying.
@@osagiee.guobadia-secondytc4624 You are definitely welcome anytime They also definitely need to do all the elevated stations and under ground for all of the handy cap people that cannot walk
Two years later, the main work done was adding an elevator from the street down to the platform at New Dorp station. It was just completed and opened for use a couple of months back, I think around Christmas/New Years.
Exactly! : ) @@leecornwell1062
I couldn’t believe that a railway could use underground trains
And who cares I love R44s and R46s (I just need smooth and plain heads)
The R44s actually have WABCO AA2 horns, they're really nice when at high speeds! (The AA2 is the horn used for the GE R77E work trains)
I always wait for the 'Out of service' and Express trains to come whizzing by with their horns. . .a real turn-on (👍).
That sea salt be beating up those SIR R44’s and those cars are 50 years old
I have miss going there now :(
13:25 The driver is switching the destination roll sign
Love the locations. Hello from Florida..
I only been on that Staten island railway train once
*H A L T !* How is there an IRT maintenance car on SIRT? I shall have to watch this video to find out.
Same
Yep.
Yes, I am the one who recorded these videos and it is an R22! Only IRT car on the SIR
It’s there for when the SIR needs construction work.
Because of their smaller size, most cars kept for M-O-W are from the IRT (A Division), even on the former BMT/IND, or in this case, the SIRT.
I miss riding this line!!!!!!!!
I’m moving back to Staten Island Port Richmond I was from . Post Ave . , New Dorp, Decker Ave. Deppe Place , my Grandfather was with Harbor Patrol on the Hudson River.
Lol who still takes the Staten Island Railway. I haven't taken that since 2015. Nice video btw.
Me. The station is right behind my house. Makes it very convenient.
For people who don’t know this the current sir line is the original line that opened in 1860
Weird how the SIRT is an odd connection between the B&O and NYC Transit.
There's NO Night Service on the SIR, it doesn't run 24/7 like the main NYC Subway
I was just on this! Cool.
This looks like the train stations I get lost in in my dreams
The express train speeding was like nOOOOOOOOO
440 is the only car that isn’t a raggedy Pos💀
Bravo great job 👏 t

I wonder why the SIR’s R44s are single units?
Meaning why is it only 4 cars? That's because ridership is low and never really justified having an 8 car train. Plus the platforms can only fit 4 cars.
I think he was asking why the cars aren’t linked into 4-car sets.
It’s because they usually have to transport them over the bridge to Coney Island yard for maintenance, and separating a 4 car set is a hassle so they just keep them as single units
The R44 is coming to be replaced by the new R211 subway cars
Damn those r44s go fast af
Why does St. George have several platforms?
Because it’s a terminal.
relic from when the railroad was far bigger and more important.
This trains used to run on the A line
I literally thought for a moment it was accessible by a commuter rail 💀
Wow, so first @TrainCam does 360deg SIR video, and now @DJHammerTrains goes to SI.
He didn’t, I recorded the videos and sent them to DJ hammers for use.
I wonder if Elon Musk's Boring company could dig a tunnel between the SIRR and the BMT-IND in Brooklyn UNDER THE NARROWS?
2:54 S53 Nova bus at top?
Hey. You just Put up a Really Really Great video. But I am not from there. What was I looking at??? I wish other content creators would Video as you did. Nice Clear Sharp and pausing to show us something. But you did not do any telling of what you were showing. It's extremely frustrating to view this. Not knowing what the heck the sights are. Like I have never been on Staten Island. I know it is part of NYC. But Why the old Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road color light signals? I thought I was seeing wrong. Wow. Let me go look up why . Thank you for the video trip. very nice. 👍👍👍
Only train I haven’t ride in nyc
How does the SIR exit to the National railroad network?
It used to connect to the National railroad network until 2011. There was a spur at Richmond valley but it was removed
@@lisachu6491 that spur never went anywhere though
🤩 wowed your new show was name is Nachito
Never understood why if State island is part of NYC why haven’t it been train that goes from state island to Brooklyn never made since to me
3:28 is Oakwood Heights
1:08 Was that the SIR rail car on the left that R44 replaced?
No, thats an R21 work car.
Howling
It used to be owned by the B&O railroad. Still has the B&O Position Light signals. A relic of the past. Staten Island has a gazillion bus lines. One or more actually parallel the SIR. Lots of service between Tottenville and St. George. Cannot understand why MTA continues to operate this Toonerville Trolley when every dollar counts.
It's free except at St. George and Tompkinsville.
The bus is a slower alternative compared to the SIRR.
There are areas that the SIR serves with no bus service, particularly in the south shore.
@@TrainMaster5097 nah the south shore also got buses
@rs: Yes, they do, but aside from the S74 and S78 bus routes, the lines down there are infrequent and don’t run outside of rush hours or weekdays. In addition, the routes mentioned above don’t serve every single SIR station and require a long walking distance to reach some of them. Even after the express bus redesign implementation, the south shore still doesn’t have many transportation options.
Does the railway have a carwash?
I forgot to join the premiere, I was playing roblox
Mow car stripped of black gates
Since the SIR is technically only a railroad in Staten Island, it shouldn't be part of the NY Subway system and instead be a separate railway system like the LIRR run by MTA by using either diesel engines or EMU
A railroad line doesn’t always need Diesel engines. For example, RTD is all EMUs.
LIRR mostly is M7 and M9 EMU'S not locomotives
They do have railroad diesels, the BL20G, for work service, which is the same locomotives used on the metro north railroad on the Danbury and Waterbury lines
They have a better system
How much is a monthly pass ?
Same as NYC subway.
Vincent - RUclips
Exploring? How do you define that as exploring? For all the detail shown, that could have ben in Siberia.
I think ya should have shown the names of the stations ijs also you usually ride trains and take videos from front window. Most people have no idea 💡 that SI has a MTA rail system. You should provide some information ℹ️ to educate otherwise it just looks like random train platforms that look alike. Kinda boring and repetitive. imo ijs 🤷🏻
This railroad is a joke old cars and terrible weekend suspensions all to upgrades r211 electric 3 rd rail
It isnt a joke.
