One early Saturday morning in the spring of 1997, I treated myself to an LIRR ride from Penn Station to Long Beach. I thought I'd died and gone to HEAVEN, the trip was so beautiful. The return trip, which you captured just as BEAUTIFULLY here, was nearly as memorable. Thank you, DJ, for reminding me of it in this post.
I couldn't agree with you more but for me it was Grand Central Terminal having community from Rye New York for over 30 years. Prior to Jacqueline Onassis being instrumental in its revitalization I remember when it revitalization I remember when it was a pit.
@@SicilianStealth Dude I know that. I recently visited the Moynihan Hall and I admit, they did a somewhat decent job at replicating the original. Though not nearly as magnificent, it’s still a massive improvement. I heard they’re now removing those beam columns on the ceiling. About time. Now if only old Port Authority Bus Terminal could get the same treatment.
Look almost the same as 30 years ago, I would take a round trip from Long Beach to Lynbrook for $2.50 to eat at White Castle for about $7 pretty good value for $10. Nice to see It's still there on the left @ 16:41 you can see the top of the building
What equipment do you use to film it? Footage is so crispy P.s: sad to see the metro north doesn't get as much love with these kind of videos, difficult to find content.
Everyone is all over the LIRR cock that yes its true, you don't see many videos like this. I am an engineer for MNR. I did post a video a few weeks back from the back cab of an m3 on the Harlem line. Only a few mins long
Actually there's plenty of footage with Metro North. Having commuted from Rye to Grand Central Terminal over a 30-year period there's plenty of Metro-North videos.
I ride the Long Beach branch always I never seen East rockaway and center ace station so busy as there so close together, I guess during rush hour it’s like this.
In cab signals. In most railroad systems there is an alarm in the cab that goes off periodically that the engineer/motorman must answer within a certain timeframe or the train will automatically stop, that is to make sure the engineer/motorman is awake and paying attention.
I remember growing up living in Laurelton/Rosedale. Riding the LIRR and would constantly see 75-80mph. Now when I come back to visit and ride, its painfully slower.. What gives?
I don’t have any experience on the LIRR but my guess would be deferred maintenance means that the trains must run slower to meet the same/higher safety requirements
I rode the Ronkonkoma to Penn line back in 2016 last time I was in NY and that train was hitting 80mph which is the max authorized speed these days even though LIRR train and track design speed is 100mph.
Some of those stations were built 100+ years ago when LIRR trains weren't running 10-12 cars during peak time. LIRR can run up to 12 cars in the consist, the most of any commuter railroad I believe and longer than the max length on a subway train.
I've noticed that sometimes the third rail is on the right, while other times it runs on the left of the train. Does the conductor have to "do" anything to switch the feet over, or do all trains have them on both sides all the time?
No the trains have 3rd rail pick-up shoes on both sides and neither the conductor nor the engineer need to do anything about that. This older M3 model EMU does not transfer power between cars however, so you notice the HVAC cuts out periodically (the lights in the car do too but not captured on video) as this front car goes over a gap in third rail , and cuts back in when a shoe contacts it again.
Next time I'm on the island, I want to try one of the double-decker trains. Which branches do they run on, and do they do so at all times of the day, and on all days?
On diesel lines, so any train to Long Island City, Greenport Shuttle, Montauk, the diesel section of Port Jefferson, but some trains run to Penn Station with C3s in the morning.
I have been a rail fan my entire life. I do pity anyone who has to commute using the LIRR. I can’t imagine wasting 2 and 3 hours of my day, 5 days per week for 40 years. That’s time one can never get back no matter how anyone rationalizes it.
Enjoyed both versions of this run - have to note how muted the horn is by comparison to most US railroad administrations, is that a local noise pollution by-law? Sad to see the Montauk Cut-off laid low like that but amused to see how often you catch up with the HP Av/LIC train - isn't the loco on the third rail by this point? \m/
In most countries trains don't sound the horn nearly as much as the US, probably they adapt the horn a bit in New York due to the reality of people actually having to live near the trains 😉
Excellent video, fantastic detail. Tell me, since I'm originally from the West coast, what are those bell sounds I am hearing frequently, that sound like telephone rings?
@@thomasdarby6084 Yes, basically all trains in the civilized world have that, both passenger and freight. If the engineer fails to respond to the alarm within a certain amount of time the train automatically stops.
There are signals on the Track - you just don't see them, because they are using ATC. This boxed you see between the track rails from time to time: That are the signal boxed, that send the signal into the cabin.
Signal is in the operators cab. It's not like the subway where there is a trackside signal every 1000ft because the subway is still running some rolling stock that is over 50 years old.
They cant since the LB branch is electrified so the diesel engines are not necessary. And remember 2012 had hurricane Sandy which absolutely wrecked Long Beach so it likey damaged the third rail, therefore requiring the usage of diesel engines. I lived in LB at the time of hurricane sandy and my family and I had to leave to brooklyn since it was so bad. It was quite a while until we were able to go back.
You could get around just as fast, perhaps faster, on a train one hundred years ago. Today's New York metro mass transit is a huge disappointment and clearly a result of lack of investment.

You all are plain wrong. Yes, there maybe have been some express trains on that branch from Long Island to Penn Station. But the nature of the line has changed: in the 1900s the line was made so that the New Yorkers could travel to a day at the beach. Nowadays it's a commuter train. And for a commuter train not the speed is important, but how many services they have. More services on the line means less speed, because you don't want a train to catch up to the train ahead.
@AriesAreTheBest Back in the day, you hopped the turnstile or pulled it backward and slipped past it. The old wooden ones, I was too small to hop so I went under those, lol. And this when fares were 35 cents.
It's legal if you're filming it for personal use, which I'm pretty sure includes this, anything else you need a permit. But nonetheless all Path trains are the PA5s which give no accessto the front window because the engineer closes the door blocking it.
It is astounding that this bridge is still 1 track. And the going is walking speed until the 2nd track on land is reached. Little service increase is possible; this is a bottleneck. To add insult to insult, the speed limit appears to be 45mph, when it could be higher.
It's a commuter train. Why should it go much faster than 60 to 70 miles? The train has to stop all three minutes and in 11:00 he already overshoots a platform, because he's too fast :D
