Lived on Long Island for 62 years before moving to Colorado to be with family. Rode the MP-54s back in the 60s; miss the moanin' and groanin' of the motors, plus the distinct odor of ozone. All the pre M1 MUs had the rather distinctive Westinghouse controller, which was based on elevator controls! Some of the engineers were almost as old as the MP-54s, and so were a lot of the conductors. Lots more variety of rolling stock in those days, with old and new cars mixed together in trains. Unique "doubledeckers" too, which were roundly disliked by conductors, cleaners and a lot of ladies! Many ancient cars on the diesel lines , heated by steam. LIRR was big ALCO customer, and the RS-3s had a very distinctive burble. I also remember the destruction of Penn Station, which was a tragedy. Thank God they saved Grand Central! The LIRR starts service tomorrow to "Grand Central Madison", which was nothing more than a wild dream in my day. Colorado is nice, but you can't get a good "hard roll", and there's no "Change at Jamaica"!
Amazing to see the rail system in this way. On one hand it is said to be antiquated. It was built a long time ago. Some rails had been there for decades. On the other hand it is something that these miles or railway had been built as far back as the mid 1800s and they still work and can be used to transport people and products. There is just an enchanting element to the entire rail system.
Awesome video. I grew up in Long beach. In the 80's when I was about 6 or 7 years old, one of my dad's friends was an LIRR operator. One day he let me drive the train over the trestle on a train that was returning to LB. It was a cool experience. PS. It was the old bridge that swung out.
Yeah nobody would let you even into the CAB these days if you’re not rules qualified. In my brief time with Metro North before I was terminated for “not meeting the expectations of the training program” I asked an engineer if I could ride in the cab on my way home from New Haven CT to Grand Central so I wouldn’t be taking up a seat from a paying customer. He asked me “are you qualified?” I obviously can’t lie about that so the answer was no, I couldn’t ride in the cab.
Lived in Rockville Centre during WWll and visited East Rockaway frequently. Went to elementary school in Oceanside…Terrell Avenue School while living on Calais Court…fond but distant memories.
Thanks for posting. My uncle was an engineer on the Long Island Rail Road and he influenced me to become an engineer too. This video reminds me of him, although he hated running the M series, but stuck mostly with diesel jobs.
a very enjoyable video. I, a country boy, was amazed to see kudzu vine growing on long Island! Growing well too. I must have seen maybe eight patches. Then too, oh the vines! so many vines, even right down to the near Manhatten!
This video illustrates an interesting and enlightening cultural and regulatory contrast between the LIRR and my employer, a major US airline. A similar workplace video at said airline is in direct violation of company policy, a policy that is partially crafted due to regulatory oversight.
Why such a drastic speed restriction going over the bridge at the start? Does that bridge work? Thanks for the ride-along!! Used to take the LIRR to Patchogue MANY times with the diesel swap at Jamaica!
These new LIRR timetables are an absolute mess because there’s no timed connections at Jamaica anymore. My home station is Hewlett on the Far Rockaway branch but I often find myself going to Lynbrook so I don’t have to wait 10-15 minutes at Jamaica for a transfer. Also the fact that they eliminated through service to Atlantic Terminal was also an awful decision. They have since brought back through service to Brooklyn but only for the MORNING rush. There’s very few trains that go to places other than Jamaica from Brooklyn during the evening rush. There’s a few trains to Freeport and only ONE to Hempstead. The only branch that runs through service to Brooklyn at all times is West Hempstead which is not a high ridership line. I have cousins that live in West Hempstead and they always go to Mineola when they take the train into Manhattan.
It's horrible. Connections are no longer guaranteed and there's no more "All aboard". Trains would pull in side by side, you want to get to the Penn Station Train from the Grand Central Train, That Train's doors open first, and then right as yours open, that Train's door close, angering people. One time I was doing A B and C one night in Jamaica (I work in Stations FYI) someone ran to the Penn Station Train from the GCM Train and started banging on the door as the Train pulled out, and the GCM Train couldn't leave because not all the doors closed. Turns out, they became so impatient, they punched the emergency door release handle and manually opened the door, resulting in having to cut out the door and then log it to the Dispatchers. It's amazing how stupid people are these days.
If you have a question look at the comments. Odds are it's been asked. No need to tell him there isn't a flat spot on the wheel. You would be the 80th person to say so lol. Don't ask about the bells either. 😂🤣😂

Love these videos, but oh, that flat-spotted wheel!
Man! I miss LIRR so **much** ! Tempted to go back to New York just to ride again 😊

With this line coming to train sim, this is my practice reference 😂

This will be good. So glad the M3s are back.
Same here!
I’ve done this run many times from Forest Hills to Long Beach and back whenever I need some ocean therapy. An enjoyable ride.
My wife grew up in Forest Hills. On Metropolitan Ave. and 69th Street.

Always go where the money is. If it pays more, take it!
Thanks for putting up[ this channel. I have come to have a whole new respect for the LIRR, esp the Jamaica Station Shuffle
Thanks!
Amazing. Thank you so much for taking the time to, not only record, but to post this.
You're very welcome!

It's pretty cool watching this after playing this route in tsw4 on Xbox in the M7.
This is my favourite video out of all of them...
I just realized there are double 3rd rails on the Long Beach bridge !
Great weather! Great view! Great video!
Thanks!
Great Video I actually rode an M3 on Metro North the same day
W Hempstead shuttle on the left
Awesome video.
Now this is cool. I've never been to either.

Got a flat spot on a wheel
Yeah I know.
Hopefully an M3 will be sent to Grand Central so we can get a good video of that.
M3's are restricted from going into Grand Central due to the grade of the tunnel and the coding system.
Hi from Detroit - Cool ride along. 🚂

Valley Stream Station only serves 8 cars
we need to see a metro north
US right of ways are amazing. All the vegetation and a 3rd rail that some unknowing trespasser or animal could come in contact with. With no fencing!
What are all those series of bells ringing indicate , Thank you for these videos
Short bells are the Alerter. Long bells are the speed code dropping.
@@MrMaster767 well that has to be annoying all day long and what is those two items you mentioned
Awesome video bro
Seems to be distance distortion. I get that with my GoPro. Makes me seem fast on my bicycle 😉
It does!
What's with the flat spot on the wheel? I heard this on fright trains but not commuter trains.
The M series cars have pretty aggressive braking. They can stop better than anything even Amtrak has. You get the occasional flat spot…
What's up with track 21?
why are there what appear to be two 3rd rails over lead draw bridge?
Good question.
My gues is voltage support
What happened as the train entered the east river tunnel? Emergency brake?
A few employees needed to hop off.
What's with the bell on the LIRR train? It's getting annoying. : 0
Short bells are the Alerter. Long bells are the Speed code dropping.
@@MrMaster767 OK. : )
Was that you who made the Lynbrook announcement?
No.
Why is M3s back?
High demand in equipment and not enough M9s on the property.
this entire infrastructure needs to be completely overhauled so that the trains can run faster
The head car has flat spots, bad.
Yeah, but they need them due to high demand.
@@MrMaster767 that's no reason to have it in service, being a retired road car inspector
from garden city....agonizing to watch....sorry!

The New York , Long Island area seems outdated, beat down and gross. Cool video though , happy I don't live there. Cheers !
