    In case anyone is wondering the video ends at the Bridge because the Conductor needs to be riding at the head end when going toward a Station where the track ends in a bumper block. This is a reactionary rule to the incident at Atlantic.

      It's the equivalent to requiring a flight attendant to be in the flight deck to supervising the pilot taxiing to the gate. What was the cause of the driver not stopping? Could it be they're not enforcing basic fitness requirements (proper sleep and no significant comorbidity like being overweight, or suffer from sleep problems)?

    The large housing development towers just before Locust Manor is Rochdale Village cooperative. It was built in the 60’s on the site of the demolished Jamaica Race Track.

    the LIRR is one of the oldest Railroad's still operating under its original Charter. it was controlled by the PRR for nearly 50 years. (1900-1949). Who is getting the M9s?

    Its a shame.. All this speed restrictions/reductions have really put a damper on the LIRR as a whole.. i remember growing in Laurelton and the trains would blow by doing 70mph plus.. Now they barely reach 60mph it seems.. only stretch which doesnt seemed hampered is between jamaica and hicksville. almost as if the engineers cant be trusted to operate the trains... off soap box.. great vid..

    • @WestAirAviation
      @WestAirAviation 5 лет назад +4

      The speed at Laurelton Station is 80mph, but the curves to the east and west are 60mph. AFAIK those curves were built in 1950 with a 60mph restriction.
      The RR has gotten slower over the years, though, and that's entirely 100% due to the automatic speed control. Track 1 west of Woodside is a 55mph curve. The ATC will put on max brake about 1.2 miles prior and bring you down to 40. (Which means you really need to be doing 35mph to avoid "hitting the code"). So you're operating a train at 35 mph, through a 55 curve, that can realistically handle 80mph without a train derailing over it.
      Montauk is another big one. You have 55 mph curves where the ATC will force you to operate below 38 mph, and it will do so over a mile before the restriction. The best branches for an engineer are greenport, Oyster Bay, and Babylon to Y interlocking, because there's no speed control to slow you down.

      The speed differences are not as important as getting home safe.

      That is Valley Tower. It is the tower for the Valley interlocking (set of switches) that the train is passing through.
