You left out the most beautiful parts of Staten Island. Our Greenbelt !! Our beautiful parks and miles of hiking trails. You left out all the beautiful wildlife that lives and visits here.
Staten Island has a mostly Italian community because, everybody came from Brooklyn! It’s called the “East Coast Shuffle” folks from Brooklyn move to Staten Island... Then they get feed up with the heavy traffic and move to New Jersey to buy their dream “McMansions”. Finally, they move to Florida and retire.
Same thing with the Jews.
Except they move from Lower Manhattan to Upper Manhattan, then to Westchester, and then to Vermont to retire.
Gran Torino
Thank You, I didn’t know that. 😂
Its Brooklyn - to S.I. - and then to NJ - and then florida!
@@grantorino2325 But the Jews have class and intelligence. The Italians love drugs, cigarettes and racing their white infinity cars around the block a hundred times.
McMansion! Thats perfection lmaoooo
I'm 70 yrs. old--grew up on staten island--before the bridge-just the ferry--it was a great place to grow up!
I grew up on Staten Island, wouldn't have it any other way. Good public schools, nice homes, friendly people, fantastic food. It really has so much to offer.
Like most places you don't truly appreciate it until it's gone, I still visit but I miss actually living there. Unfortunately a lot has changed, it might be the least crowded but we liked it that way. It breaks my heart to see how developed it has become in 26 years, I cannot imagine how my mother must feel; she still remembers SI as farm land. My grandma chose SI over Brooklyn for it's nature, because it was rural but still very accessible to the city and Brooklyn. I wish that Staten Island still existed, even the SI of my early childhood would be wonderful. Let us be forgotten once again.
I used to LOVE Staten Island but it's changed so much throughout the years and it is sad to see it over run with clogged roads(almost every one of them, if not, all of them) no matter which way you go. With all due respect the people have changed as well over the years. There are some wonderful humble people living there but let me tell you that they are also as nasty as they come. I never experienced any rudeness years ago but today there are too many. They look miserable too.
> Good public schools
LOL!
You lost me at “good public schools”
You lost me at 'friendly people'. Lol
S Bradley
There probably aren’t many places that have retained what they had 26 years ago but we know some progress is necessary if we are to be happy with life to suit our needs I guess . But being a life long Staten islander , I get it , and that Staten Island is gone . My mother , born on the lower east side before Con Edison plant was built on avenue C , lived there , the Bronx and ended up here . With all our problems of quality of life , people still come here , every year . Must be something left here that has appeal . The little precious space to live , park or enjoy must be more than they had .
The beaches are great if you want to step on a needle or come out of the water with a third arm.
And watch the fish dissolve in the water right before your eyes

@@mattydoo184 It's packed but it's a mall so

Then you must not live out here, because this place is like barely crowded accept at the ferry..lol
Even though my grandpawnts lived in Brooklyn, I had an auntt and several cousins who lived on S.I. in the Grasmere area. I loved it there. I remember always taking the railroad to Totttenville with either my couins or grandfather when he wanted tp go see his daughter, my aunt. When he went, we would always get off at the Tottenville station and sit and talk about his station in life, how it was for him growing up, and mostly talking about the way my late father was while he was growing up, as he did on S.I. - I learned so much from that man until he passed away in 1985...and when I see videos of the Outerbridge Crossing, I think to myself what a wonderful man he was, and how meaningful and sincere he was. I wish I could turn back 40 years just to tall to him again. This is indeed a very wonderful video. THANK YOU uploading this sp very much. Your videos bring back such nostalgia to me of when I was growing up in the 1970s up until 1985, when I was last up there in the metro NYC area. I miss those days a lot.
Seems Staten Island NY as become very popular lately, but least populated?? Try getting down hylan blvd.or Richmond ave At rush hour! I the wealthiest borough'???? Did your family ever ride the other Staten Island Railway lines before they closed in 1953?
@@Conellossus No that was in the north shore area. we live on the east side of the island.
I like that at 1:39 it describes Staten Island as a more suburban area but clearly you are seeing cars with European license plates and not Staten Island LOL
Haha yes that was a UK number plate
How can you tell? The license plate area, both front & back, are so blurry. And I can tell that the color is similar to a NY plate. On the other hand the car doesn’t fit-in with US big car culture, so perhaps you’re correct- I just don’t know how you definitively know!
I was born and raised in Staten Island. Lived in snug harbor ( 1 mile from the ferry ). It was a great place to grow up. Small communities where everybody knows everybody. We lived in an old Victorian style house that was built in 1886. the sailors built these homes and would house 2/3 families. I love that we were the forgotten borough, we got all benefits of living so close to NYC while still having a suburban lifestyle. Everybody looked after eachother like family. My family moved us to Florida in 2002. I was 15. I use to visit friends and family every summer for 2 months. I still have 3 close friends that I went to school with from 2nd to 8th grade.
However, I would never move back though. Too expensive.
You forgot to mention...Staten island was home for the garbage of the 5 boroughs....it had a landfill by the mall that smelled so bad in the summer you had to run from your car into the mall...and many people in the area who were residents became ill with cancer. They also sent debris from the world trade center to SI landfill. The landfill closed March of 2001. My home SI.
Lived in Staten Island for several years- loved it, but worked in Manhattan making the commute very long and time consuming- loved living there- made great friends- you forgot to mention the great shopping, restaurants and bakeries- The Nixons ordered their cakes from an old bakery in SI- SI is full of surprises- Hilly with incredible views of lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Lived on SI for 60 years born & raised & I love it here. I like going to South Beach & the water is fine. The boardwalk is great & now you can even rent a bike there.I also go to the camping in Fort Wadsworth
Nanny Of8 but they are covered in trash
If I wanted to leave Manhattan but still be in the city, would you recommend SI?
Jo Drew si is a nice place to live but super far from the city compared to other boroughs (unless you live right by the ferry or the bridge)
@@jodrew1845 it depends. It’s a much more suburban + “conservative” vibe here compared to the other boros. So if you’re very into the cosmopolitan vibe of Manhattan, you’ll find it noticeably different here. The commute is also long and expensive (in my opinion).
You missed the "Conference House" in Tottenville. A very important moment in USA history!
I lived on that block for a bit years ago but yes very important war talks sadly didn’t go anywhere
Also, Tottenville suposedly had a ferry to Perth Amboy that no longer operates.
@@georgemurphy2579 The Biddle House in the Conference House Park.
Didnt George Washington sail from Perth Amboy across the Arthur Kill
For the treaty and lose his wooden teeth there?
@@Janotes HAHAHA....NOOO!!! Benjamin Franklin and John Adams were the ones that did the meeting!😂
I love Staten Island from Outer Bridge to the narrows. My mom and her siblings grew up in Princes Bay. Her family moved from Bay Ridge in 1926. My first memories are of Nana and Pop Pop's home. Good food and happy times. They grew up in the country, they could walk to the beach and go to work in Manhattan.
FYI it's the Outerbridge Crossing. The Outerbridge's were an old famous Staten Island family who were famous for bringing Tennis to America.
To reiterate Phillip Moore’s comment, most NYers don’t realize that Outerbridge is a family name and not a geographical description of the crossing.
I’m a 71 year old lifelong tri-state area resident and only learned that fact a couple of years ago!
Was forced to move to Staten Island from Brooklyn kicking and screaming by my wife . 9 years later I’d take it over any other borough.. 🤫🤫.
I know what you mean 😂🤣 this was not where I originally wanted to buy a house! 18 years later and I love it here 👍😍🤫
My family moved from brooklyn to Staten Island too a couple years ago. I love living here but there’s barely anything here to do for fun. In Brooklyn I used to like a few blocks away from an ice cream place, pizza place and a grocery store and I could just walk there. Now everything is all spread out and you can’t get anywhere without driving

A NYer says ain't?
I'm from Staten Island and the reason why we have a wealthier group of people living here is because many of them work in Manhattan so they bring home more money and don't spend it on expensive rent. Also you pronounced Todt Hill wrong, we say it like "toad" hill
That's right...Toad Hill. Big Paulie's White House is on Road Hull, lol. Poor Paulie...Gotti got him.
I was about to say the same thing. I've never heard anyone call it "Todd Hill" lol
Thanks for the the Things You Didn't Know About [NY]. I lived there for years and never knew or saw most of the things you've covered. It's also satisfying to hear your NY accent--yea, you got one. When I moved away, I'd get so homesick so would call up NY information just to hear the operators talk and get snippy. The place has changed so much since I live there it's like a new planet, I don't know anyone who still lives there either--they all married, bought homes in Upstate or Forest Hills or Staten Island or Jersey, etc.

I’ll add one...Wolfs Pond park on the south side, it’s a beautiful park with its own beach, bbq areas and the only official mountain bike trails on Staten Island.

I had no idea. I learnt more about Staten Island in the first minute than I ever before. It sounds like my kind of place. Thankyou for this video (from New Zealand)..
But why you live in New Zealand, like one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Grew up in northeast NJ, lived on the Upper East Side of Manhattan for a couple of years, visited Brooklyn, should have checked out beautiful Staten Island in the process! Have heard about it my whole life but never got there. Thanks for the tour~
In 1981 Staten Island had the worst race riot in the history of the island and probably New York City. They don't want you to know about this. It occurred at New Dorp High School. My brother went there. They had to evacuate all of the Black kids out of the school. They had to run to the city busses that were waiting. New Dorp was a very racist section of Staten Island, like most Italian sections at that time. I don't know if it still is. Oh and Rosebank I am not leaving you people out either. That's you real Staten Island!
Great thanks for the wonderful post!
I watched the Verrazano bridge go up when I was a kid... The Island changed dramatically. FTR, The population on Staten Island is waaaaay more than 475k people...!
Born & Raised in Staten Island. MOved 18yrs ago. It is no longer the beautiful Island I grew up. We were a family unity that my grandparents settled there from Italy. Much much different today. My memories are wonderful.
I never, ever wished I could commute from SI to NYC via subway. Are you kidding me? That ferry is the most beautiful commute on the face of the earth. It's also about 20 minutes of peace before the start, or end, of a much too busy day at work. I wouldn't have traded it for the world.
When I was a child, the oldest schoolhouse in America...the same building as pictured...was called Voorhees. When was the change made?
I remember my dad bringing my sister and I for walks along Henderson Avenue, the "back side" of Sailor Snug Harbor. They had cows back then and we loved to look at them. This was in the early 1950s.
How about Barrett Zoo, nestled between Broadway and Clove Road, just a short walk from Forest Avenue. I don't know if it still holds true, but back in the 1950s and 1960s, the zoo boasted the largest rattlesnake collection in the world.
Is that a robot voice? I hope so because it's very weird! It's a "borough" not a "borrow."
Thanks for making this informative and interesting video

What a beautiful place. I'm so enchanted by the individualism and the environmental aspects of Staten Island. I am to live there in the near future. I am so fortunate.
It's diverse north of the SI expressway. South of the expressway, especially the further south you go, it is not. Sadly, many on the Island consider the SI expressway as the Mason-Dixon line.
Thank for sharing❤
Many of the roads in Staten Island we're unpaved years back you had to drive around with boards in your trunk because your car with sink in the clay you have to stick the boards under the tire of your car to get out of it back when also who remembers Al depies and both roller skating rinks or Bacci's on Hylan Boulevard and the old Pizza Town AKA Gennaro's who just closed very sad I will miss it
You left out one of the most important and best aspects of the island. Staten Island is the Greenest borough in the city. We have more park land and green belts than any of the other 4 Boroughs. And the second biggest park in all of NYC is currently being devolped. It will be as big (if not bigger by develpements end) as Central Park.
The Bronx is the greenest borough
Rob: Back before the bridge opened and massive development ensued there used to be serious wildfires on the island periodically. Additional FDNY resources would be ferried in.
My Father was stationed on the Army at Miller Field on Staten Island. He met my Mother at Midland Beach. She was there for the summer. This was in the 1930's.

Oh and the Lighthouse museum near the ferry too. And the Staten Island Zoo which is great for kids. And the SI Children's Museum in Snug Harbor. And Lastly the HISTORIC St. George Theater. Ugh.. a little research and you could have made a killer Top 20. SMH
Most ppl who work in Manhattn live on Staten Island...so yeah money on this lsland
Tyese Hansberry not really true at all. Most of those people live in Manhattan or Bk. However because SI has less people their ratio of higher income is higher.... and by higher income she stated 72k or above.

SI Native here. How could they not mention Impractical Jokers?!!! The Jokers are from SI & went to Farrell Boys' High school, also from SI -Christina Aguiliera & Steven Seagal (action movie star). The Alice Austen House is a landmark there, many movies & videos were made there e.g. Mr. Popper's Penguins starring Jim Carey. Also Madonna's Like A Virgin video was filmed on the SI Ferry.
You might have mentioned that 90% of the film, The Godfather, was filmed there.

PSA: How to pronounce “Todt Hill” like a Staten Island native. Start by saying “toad” or “towed”, but the ending consonant should be halfway between the sound of a D and the sound of a T. Do NOT say “Todd” as the narrator did, or you’ll be pegged as an outsider. You’re welcome.
The "toad" pronunciation is the correct one - the word is dutch, translated it means death - Todt Hill used to be the public hanging grounds in the 17th and 18th centuries.

I lived on Staten Island. Since 1969 and it was a great place to grow up . I'm 59 now and I moved to Florida. My opinion about s.i. is that it's over crowded today .People are more arrogant than they were back in the day.Still it is the best family based part of the city to move to. not complaining here! But where the hell did this person get their facts from? Nice beaches? More wealthy than Manhattan?! I don't mind living here, but Staten Island is just extensive as the rest of the boroughs!
I agree with you. They say lived here all my life or 47 years etc... obviously you like it then or you are a masochistic bs artist, regarding those commenters.
I used to live Queens and I hate it there. Subway stations are dirty and crowded. Life style was stressful. Now, I live in Staten Island and for more than ten years I live in Staten Island. I love it here. There are many places I can be enjoy. South beach, Midland beach, Gateway, Fresh pond, Forthwordworth are places I go and relax. Life style is much different from Queens. It is not crowded and parking are plenty anywhere and convenient every where to go -- shopping mall, Costco, Shoprites, restaurants are nearby. Staten Island is not a big Island, so driving to Brooklyn or New Jersey only take 10-20 mins and not traffice.I love it here.
Beautiful, I was there once in the 1960’s
Hasn’t changed a bit

I almost spit my tea out of my mouth......GREAT BEACHES??!! LOLOLOL....YEA OK! I GOT STUCK BY A HYPODERMIC NEEDLE SO, I BEG TO DIFFER. It seems as if everyone begs to differ on this one lol.
Next to the ferry is now a huge outlet mall called Empire Outlets. It’s located in between the baseball field and the ferry.
Nice presentation.
I love Staten Island.
Did you say "infamous" Staten Island Ferry???
What do you mean about that?
It's world famous. I remember they had the old green ones from Bay Ridge Brooklyn, and longer red Marine and Aviation ones from lower Manhattan.
Seems nobody caught that except you and me. I don’t think this narrator knows the difference.
Good work
I love the enthusiasm in the lady's voice that does the narration.
Staten means state as in nation state.. early on, it is said the Dutch used s i as their capitol
We also have the Sandy Ground museum. Here on S. I. we have several house with plaques dedicated to the underground railroad. Sandy Ground is located on Woodrow Rd. As part of the under ground railroad , free slaves created there own community.
Those free slaves , known for having had oysters as the bulk of the businesses they thrived on , gave the name Sandy Ground to the area from which they enjoyed life as free men and women.
Check it out for it is very much worth the trip. Sincerely , first native Islander , born to parents from , as we lovingly call Brooklyn " The old country".
I love those Jump bikes they added in Staten Island. They're $2 per hour or something really cheap along those lines and they're electric. Best to use them on the boardwalk they're great!
my daughter and i recently stayed in staten island at an air bnb in the arrochar neighborhood. we really enjoyed it we went to south beach during the day and took the excellent and scenic staten island ferry to manhattan during the evening and night it was a good time i would definitely go again and would like to see the snug harbor cultural center and tibertian museum they look really neat.
