- What is Staten Island? This, is #StatenIsland.
Let me ask you a question. Have you truly been to Staten Island? Like REALLY been here? When I take the ferry home from work every day I hear, “What’s in Staten Island?”, “What do they even have there?”, “What do they do there?” and an abundance of other questions from tourists, which partly sparked the idea for this project. Well, if you’ve taken the ferry to St. George only to see the Statue of Liberty for free, just to make a U-turn inside the terminal & get back on the same boat to head back to Manhattan…then no, you haven’t been here. What’s wrong with leaving the terminal, exploring, walking around a bit, maybe having something to eat?
Living on Staten Island for 24 years has given me some insight into the so-called “Forgotten Borough”. Staten Island, actually, is the Borough of Parks. More than one-third of its landmass is protected parkland, so there are plenty of hiking trails, scenic bike paths, wild deer, hundreds of species of birds, miles of beach, and just good ole’ peace and quiet to be found, along with beautiful architecture, lakes and hidden gems. So visit Staten Island and see what it’s all about!

Growing up in the late sixties and early seventies where else can you find a place that's part of the largest most fantastic city in the world yet was so rural, beautiful and so easy to grow up in only to end up the blunt of jokes and gained such a poor reputation
atleast wu tang is forever
I live in Staten Island. Whats a Staten Island ??
Because the people who inhabit it are trash
@@lancekaplan8022 yep, ever since the bridge opened in 64 the island went down. There's no more original Staten Islanders they're all Brooklynites
@@anthonysosio I'm a original Staten Islander.
I'm from Austria. We've learned about New York a month ago in Geography. They told us everything about Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and also a bit about the Bronx. But the only thing we have heard about Staten Island was that it exists. I got interested and asked my teacher about it, but she just said: "I'm sorry but I also don't know anything about it. But maybe you can find something out about Staten Island on the internet. Well, that's what I did. And I'm pretty fascinated about it. I mean SI is a part of world's most busiest cities in the world. And this peaceful, stunning place is a not to small part of it. Amazing. And it's quite sad that we don't learn anything about this, just about the famous places.
Kind des Waldes I’m glad I could help give you some insight on our borough 👌🏼
@@mattchirico I really need to thank you for that. I can't say it too often: this is amazing.
Kind des Waldes thanks a lot 🙏🏼
If you have questions on SI NY let me know. I was a teen when I moved here.
@@arfriedman4577 Born & raised on staten island 50 years strong.
Staten Island's beautiful, often the forgotten borough, often under-rated, but for me it was once home! 👍
Staten Island might be the best borough
This is my hometown too, Shoilen will always be home
born and raised on Staten island. this is unbelievable!! thank you!!
Same
thank YOU!
I'm also
Anthony Supino Born and raised in NY I envy you.
too bad it dont look this good in real life.
So I was born and raised in Harlem. As a kid, I traveled everywhere (so I thought) within the 5 boroughs. I remember being so proud learning to spell and understand the word “Borough” To this day I’ve traveled most of the world and I always look forward to the chance of telling people I meet about NYC, her people and the Boroughs. After seeing this beautiful video, I realized I don’t know Staten Island at all. Guys, take your home back. Polish that part of your big untold Apple. Show off your beautiful part of the world. The people, places and the food. I live in North San Diego (Carlsbad) now, but I’ll be in the city June 19th to 26th (2019) it would mean the world to me to visit the island. I’m truly sorry I never gave SI the attention she deserves.
PS More great videos like this one please.
Keith Boone come on over!
I’m from San Diego man! Party on!!!!
It’s normal. Most people never visit Staten Island. To be honest, there’s not much to see despite some historical areas and the traffic can be annoying. That said, I do like visiting occasionally.
This is truly amazing. I love every bit of it. For the people who have never visited Staten Island, this is an example of how you have no idea what you're missing.
NewYorkGaming exactly why I made this
Great film. In response to those of you who say "this is not Staten Island, what about the traffic and townhouses?" - you're missing the point. In my opinion, there are pros and cons to every town, but in Staten Island we often only hear and see the "cons." There are beautiful places on this island that are under utilized and appreciated. Case in point, the shot of my favorite park on Staten Island - Silver Lake. There is never anybody taking advantage of that beautiful park. Thank you Matthew for showcasing so many hidden Staten Island gems in a perspective many haven't seen before.
I like Staten Island but it doesn’t get that much attention since it has similarities to neighborhoods in New Jersey and of parts of Philly. If you’re from another part of the world, then renting a car and checking out local bars and restaurants can be a fun novelty especially if you’re from a small town out in the Midwest or west coast since contrasts to that environment
I am not from Staten Island but I've become fascinated with it simply because other NYC people make fun of it so I started doing some searching and ended up here. Not disappointed.
Ninjaken thank you, I tried to show it in it’s truest light
Loved this! This is what I love about the borough - its green open spaces and nature trails. Thanks for capturing just some of that!
Staten Island was just a small little town until they build the Verizanno(?) bridge. I like many moved there after the bridge was built. I was a NYC Detective stationed at the 122 Pct on Hylan Blvd. It was a great place to raise a family. A lot of memories.
Whoever chose this piece of music, I just want to let you know it gave me chills up my spine and a lump in my throat🙌. Made me truly believe in my heart that we are the Greatest Borough. Utmost most of thanks.😪💜🙏💖🙌
Thats exactly what I wanted you to feel
W O W... Awesome cinematography. Truly captivating Staten Island's beauty. Great job.
Delly Flay thanks a lot
Great video, and accompanied by a great soundtrack, music is what usually makes the video. im just glad i got this video off of a recommendation list. worth the 8 months!
Leponce37 would you believe me if it took me 3 months to find the perfect song? (It really did) and what video were you watching that this came up on? Just wondering
I miss my hometown. The way it was when I was growing up. Before it gained notoriety for the wrong reasons. This was a beautiful video. Thank you for showcasing the beauty of Staten Island.
Literally can see the right-of-way of what would have been the completed Willowbrook Pkwy @ 1:40. Really great shots and, of course, very skillfully editing!
Born and raised here. I love how you captured all the beauty this Island has to show! I'm going to tell everyone I know to watch this! Wonderful job ❤️❤️
Christine K thanks a lot!
I LOVE STATEN ISLAND. ALWAYS HAVE, ALWAYS WILL!😍😍😍
Yes!!
That, and so much more. There's definitely a whole lot more to be seen in Staten Island than what's in this video, as great as this video is. A little under 60 square miles with National, State, and City parks, and so much more culture than anyone that only knows the Staten Island Expressway would ever understand. Great video! and Thank you!
I took the ferry 9ver to Staten Island..ate at a restaurant bar where a kid was having his barmitzvah party. Just a slice of NYC even for a few hours during the overcast day. I lived in Long Island, so I hit pieces of NYC here and there. Year 2000. Ir was a good experience.
Staten Island, my childhood home borough from a baby and up. I will always love ❤️ Staten Island 💃🏽😊💃🏽
Here's the thing.... all that "OPEN SPACE" the narrator speaks of is rapidly transforming into a sea of eye sores in the shapes of town houses crunched together along treeless streets and rows of "any town USA" shopping plazas. There was so much beauty on Staten Island. It's painful to watch it all torn down by greedy developers. All the forested woods and wild places of my youth that weren't protected under the Greenbelt banner have been demolished. Stunning historic homes torn down in order to squeeze in a few more attached condos.... For Christ's sake, they even demolished Mt. Manresa and that wonderful property!!! Ponds, lakes and beaches where we once fished and connected with nature are now mostly fenced off as private luxury estates. It's disgraceful what they've done to neighborhoods like Shore Acres for example. At least the Greenbelt is protected. A small victory for those who grew up on the Island. And, thankfully the yupster gentrifier transplants haven't taken the borough like they have Brooklyn and Queens. In a way, Staten Island is probably the last strong hold for native New Yorkers. Something well worth celebrating and holding on to.
I lived on Staten Island from around 4 to 9 or 10 I think, during the 80s. I remember my family moving back to Rochester when I was in 4th grade. Even though I was only there for a short time, I have so many memories, and it is painful to think of all of the things that were changed. I was born in Rochester NY, but I almost consider Staten Island to be my true home. When me and my family came back to Rochester NY, so many things seemed foreign. My favorite TV shows I watched back when I was in Staten Island started going off the air too :(
I’m traveling to NYC for the third time is August and this time I’m staying on Staten Island in a B&B. This video has only confirmed I’ve made the right choice. I’ll take a few days in Manhattan surely, but this island has so much to offer it seems 🙏🙏🙏
Greetings from Norway! A very very good dronevideo. Calming and exciting at the same time!
I am proud to see this positive depiction of our borough
Born and raised on Staten Island. Was so lovely before the Verrazano Bridge was built. Now it's a different place. I had the best of it.
I'm proud and happy to be a StatenIslander for over 17 years! Video liked and very much appreciated!
I always try to capture little beauties along the island but, WOW! Thank you for showing how beautiful Staten Island really is and for the list of where these amazing shots were taken. We all have complaints on this island but I see no reason to use this thread as a place for them. Nothing but love here and for this island I've been on for 9 years now which I am proud to call home! Sharing this everywhere because everyone needs to see this! Thanks again! 💙
I don't like Staten Island. It sucks
It’s not fair that it doesn’t get the respect it deserves I walked across the Bayone bridge today and it was beautiful!!!
This video deserves a million views maybe more not just 128k
Yasir Siddiqui 🙏🏼😇
Even the glorious music and picky takes couldn’t make it beautiful
Waiting for Wu Tang Clan to pop up
*I'm moving to Staten Island from Pakistan this week.*
Although this is great, you've exposed some of my secret places! haha
you mean to tell me that there's a small town on my backdoor? And new yorkers know about this?
This is great video both captured and edited! Proud to be a part of this beautiful and great borough! Love SI
Great video. They call us the forgotten borough. this proves that we are more beautiful than any other of the 4 boroughs
I was in NYC 2 years ago. I took the ferry to Staten Island, and then I began to walk and walk and walk, it was amazing for me,, I couldn't know several places there because I was walking. I would like to come back. Greetings from Colombia
Yea if you’re ever back in NYC, make a day trip out of SI. There’s a lot of great places to eat
@@mattchirico hello Matt, thanks for your recommendation. Yes,,, restaurants, graveyard ships, stadium, bridges,, there are a lot of places. I hope to know The Bronx, Harlem and Queens too. I like the old places.
This is such a beautiful depiction of staten island. Thank you. I hope you make another one.
jorgecornet thanks a lot!
As a former resident of Staten Island I’ll always enjoy being a part of it as always enjoying to revisit all the time from Long Island
luv!!... S.I.! you got the projects, you got the rich parts,an you got what you see here.. well done video/cinematography is on point
Amir NY City thank a lot!!
Thank you so much for this! I’m a proud native New Yorker. I’ve lived in 4 of the 5 boroughs (Sorry! I don’t know the Bronx!) and Long Island. But Staten Island is where I will stay. We are the “Forgotten Borough “ but our island is also a hidden gem. We have everything here! Thank you for portraying this in such a beautiful and positive way. And thank you everyone for such beautiful comments! 🗽
💪🏼💪🏼
it is wonderful
Wow. Thank you for this.
It's great seeing familiar spots captured more beautifully than ever before.
Hey Matt...Great videography...Completely Awesome...Great flying skills!!!Keep up the great work...Old P&M Crew Member...
Thank you Matt....looking forward to showing this to my grandkids.
Mike Signorile awesome!
I had a senior couple that was vacationing here in south Texas, I was surprised to see a small rental car pull up to my curbside and have a couple of old people come out and say hi. They introduced themselves and asked me is I was thinking of selling my house. I told them that perhaps in two years when my kids were a bit older that I was considering moving to San Antonio, the real surprise came when they asked if I would be willing to go visit them at their home in Staten Island that had similar craftsman architecture. They stated they would evenly trade their house for mine. Supposedly they were wanting to relocate to south Texas for the warmer weather and very little traffic. Never been to SI and don't know what it really looks like but this video is nice.
Nice shots. We have a tree service in Staten Island, so you can appreciate the beauty.
Beautiful film, congratulations on this labor of love!
Guappo4Prez2012 thank you!
A well done video of the unique scenery of Staten Island. Like any place there is a beautiful and not so much side to SI. Staten Island is a wonderful part of the great and crazy tapestry of the 5 boroughs of NYC.
Simply a great video! The time and effort put into this shines through....
Bill VanGlahn thank you for noticing
South Beach, Stapleton, Port Richmond, the Number 7 Bus, Verrazano Bridge, Hylan Blvd ...so many memories 🗽🗽✌, have a blessed day everyone!
Can't believe that is New York City too 😱😱😱👌🏼
BETTER BELIEVE IT BUDDY
Born and raised on staten island. I am proud of it. I do miss it to this day.
Great work on scouting these locations! Awesome edit
thanks !
Very nice video. Congrats to Max Rose, who is now Staten Island's Congressman.
Beautiful and exciting! Thank you.
Matthew -
A co-worker told me about this video - not sure how I missed all the fanfare when you first posted it. As a hobbyist photographer and someone who's dabbled with video editing myself, I know how much work you put into this (a shit ton). You did an amazing job. I work on the island and this showed me more of the hidden gems that I didn't know about - and you showcased them so beautifully. Perfect song choice, too!
Well done! And congrats on the recognition you've received for it!
Patrick Bianchi thanks a lot Patrick!
As a native born islander I have to say this video is spectacular!
I wonder though why, some sights weren't included? Like the S I zoo,... Wetserleigh park....pictures of the ferry, and boats. I would have liked to seen more.... Hope there is a part 2...., thank you
Linda M thank you! Maybe there will be(;
Staten Island, Brooklyn and Manhattan are my favorite boroughs :)
ay that's what I'm talkin' about!
Wow I am visiting new York in a few weeks, I didn't plan on going to Staten island but after this video I will definitely go take a look
mllelunatic did you go?
We need a part 2!!!! We are so lucky to live among all of this beauty.
Stephen Ferdinando I would love to but a part 2 wouldn’t be able to live up to this!
Fantastic. Encouraging. Eye Opening. This video documentary of S.I. is outstanding and overdue. I have already shared it with dozens of friends.
Charles R. Thanks a lot Charles! You’re the man!
Very mesmerizing, amazing shooting, I hope someday to visit America and in particular there
As a fellow islander I have to say that that was awesome... I've lived here my whole life and there were some spots in your video that I have no idea where they are on the island... you should put up a location list, so please can go check some of those places out.
Also, with regards to the drone footage, did you need to get any sort of permission to fly near the Ferry or the bridges? I would love to get some awesome video from above of those places, but am afraid of getting in trouble by authorities.
I second this, I would love to see a location list
Anthony Parisi I'll get that list out in the description tomorrow(:
Some are re-occurrences, but these are the spots in order:
1) South Beach Pier
2) Docs by Huguenot Ave and Bloomingdale off Arthur Kill
3) Silver Lake
4) South Beach Dolphins
5) St. George
6) Wolves Pond (fun trails)
7) Lighthouse Hill (great walk up, great Tibetan Museum)
8) Marshlands in Fresh Kill
9) CSI
10) Wolves Pond
11) Lemon Creek (can walk there from Mount Loretto there is a trail)
12) Marina Cafe
13) West Shore Rail (I think)
14) Stapleton
15) Goethals Rail Bridge (this actually connects to NJ, why it doesn't work no clue)
16) Mount Loretto (there is a bald eagle there now)
17) South Beach
18) Ferry
19) Bayonne Bridge which is now raised
20) Tanks off West Shore
21) Richmond Town
22) Miller Field (great bike ride all the way up to Ft. Wadsworth)
23) Mount Loretto Tower on the beach
24) Snug Harbor.
I think I missed a few, but that's it for the most part. Fun things that I think are missed are Clay Pit Pond, Conference House park which imo are the best trails in SI. Highrock Park, trails are poorly marked, but it's a good hike through there - can see chipmunks and various other animals and birds.
Cool video!
Awesome. Most of the locations I know, there were just a couple I didnt, namely that rail bridge with the two cement structures on each side...
Samantha D'Angelo check it out now in the bottom of the video description

I love this video. It makes me miss my home. I know SI has kinda gone to shit but it's still my home. So thank you for showing the beauty of Staten Island.
Very nicely done!

I was born in Staten Island and have since moved, but when I went back it has changed and seems much crowded.... it'll always be home🤗
Wow, just wow. A piece like this is sorely overdue. Wonderful job. Thank you. I subscribed.

My pleasure! I also shared your video with the president of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce Linda Baran, I asked her to share it as well! Please sub back if you can, would help my channel! Thanks!
Extraordinary photography!

I wish Staten Island could go back to how it used to be when all the people from the other boroughs didn’t move here it was so much nicer
Yasss; this video stunningly captures the island. Amazing.
I wanna live there !!!! I see a lot of future in Staten Island !!!!!
Lovely, thank you. Yes, please leave the open spaces on our Staten Island, OPEN. No more developers.

Bunker Boy Gaming: "Staten Island is the greatest part of nyc"
You're so right. It took me about 50 years to realize that. lol
You couldn't pay me enough money to live in the other boroughs.
Show this video in the terminals in New York & in Staten Island. Thank God for the Greenbelt and The Protectors of Pine-Oak Woods for trying to keep Staten Island open and green!
I wish they'd show it there
Not so bad when you put it that way. I miss it, maybe, I don't miss it much cause I live in paradise now. Growing up there in the 70s and 80s is something I wouldn't trade for anything.
I love you Matthew! You did a amazing video! Happy holidays to you and yours! 😍

Nice to fly a drone around SI. Much easier than getting around by car on the roads. Grew up there in Castleton Corners. Farrell HS grad.
VirFi!
Staten Island, NYC's forgotten borough no more!
RovingRoy got that right!
Staten Island is a borough in New York?
Wow actually Staten Island video I can share with friends !
I love Staten Island, correct the forgotten borough that is never mentioned by the news. but once in a while when someone hit and run or road rage or crash, Staten Island is mentioned when something happens.
Beautiful !
By the way this is a GREAT video. Thanks for making SI proud!
Beautiful! It was nice see something similar to what my ancestors, many of them oystermen, would have seen - all that water and greenery! But I was disappointed that I couldn't see the end scene because of those ads in the way!
