- An extremely iconic orange ferry (which is a free ferry in New York City), the Staten Island Ferry shuttles people back and forth from Manhattan to Staten Island 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Since it passes by the Liberty Island, many people ride it in order to get a closer look of the Statue of Liberty. In this video, we are going to talk about how to ride the Staten Island Ferry, its terminals (Whitehall Terminal and St. George), and other tips and good-to-knows when taking a trip on the NYC free ferry.

I lived in Staten Island after spending a year living in the East Village, and I maintain that riding the ferry twice a day was the best way to prepare for/decompress after a long day of work & school. I still miss it!
There was a time my commute was on the East River ferry. It was the best start to any work day.
It may be the poor man's cruise, but after the trip you are rich in new impressions of the wonderful city. We did the tour twice, in the afternoon, at sunset and then back at night. By the way, if you walk all the way down to the stern (Manhattan) or to the bow (Staten Island), you are practically alone and can take the most beautiful photos of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty. I can recommend this tour to every New York traveller, as well as this channel. Many thanks to you Thea
What a good idea to go during sunset! I'm sure it was beautiful.
“Poor people cruise” is crazy 💀😂
Thank you for pointing out the dangers of getting scammed by people selling fake Statue of Liberty tickets. I work for a tourism non-profit and in the past couple weeks I've seen more people selling bogus tickets and I've had several tourists come to me for help, but there's nothing I can do.
That's very unfortunate, but sadly there will always be opportunists.
I was there last July 5 and I enjoyed the free ride. Thanks to New York.
Came here to look at the process of travelling on a SI ferry.
Good job in pointing out there is only one licensed boat company to get visitors to Liberty and Ellis islands
Appreciate your informative, straightforward video without being one of those RUclipsrs feeling the need to be on camera and making it all about themselves instead of focusing on the actual topic of the video which happened on a SI ferry video
Your videos are top notch. Love the way you explain everything. Awesome work
When I was in New York City a couple summers ago, albeit for all of a couple hours one of the first things I set out to do was to ride the Staten Island ferry because I had heard great things about it and how it's the better way to see the Statue from natives I met when working deep upstate at a camp near Vermont. It was a great ride, would recommend it, and it was really fun to watch half of everyone get off, and run around to the other terminal to get back on and go back to Manhatten.
Someday I will go back to NYC and spend more than half a day there.
Your video was very informative. I am taking a ferry round-trip this Saturday to see the skyline of Manhattan. I found it very helpful. Thank you. Great video.😊
Another awesome video ! You’re the bomb !
Nostalgic
Great way to get to the outlets!
Visiting NY for the 1st time in a week! This was super helpful! Thank you
Awesome 🙌 Hope you have a great trip!
Very good and informative video
Bravo!
Thanks for uploading and sharing
Your vídeos are REALLY REALLY good. Thanks a lot! Regarding the ferry, are there any better time to go during the day? Or, any time to avoid?
Thanks Thea 😊👍🇹🇹🇹🇹
I missed the JFK ferry boat the last of the wooden seats boat. I remember when the boat first came out way back in 1965 with the American Legion and the Gov. Herbert H. Lehman
Hello Thea - Thank again for the video and I hope you're enjoying the Tennis at Flushing right now ! I've travelled that Staten Island Ferry about 10 times across my various trips to NYC over the years - no matter what time of the day it is always packed to the rafters. I would love to know what percentage of people using the service are tourists and what percentage are local residents of Staten island using it for a daily commute. What do you think ? If I was a resident of Staten Island I'm not so sure I'd been keen to use it regularly given its always so full of out of towners lol
I've only ever ridden it on the weekends. It's not that crowded during that time. Not sure during the weekdays. But I guess tourists tend to ride on the sides rather than in the middle area.
On my very first ferry with my family, it didn't operate 24 hours. I remember we were every worried if the ferry we got on was the last ferry, or we wouldn't be able to go back. Luckily it was the second to the last :) Thanks for the video!
Lucky breaks like that make it even more memorable. ⛴️✨
❤
Nice video. Do you still have to take a bicycle via the lower level as opposed to pedestrians who use mainly the upper level entry and exit? It's been so long since I've taken the ferry in fact I remember when you had to pay 25¢!
I believe so. But that's a good point. When it comes to updating this video, I'll make sure to add bike information.
its free i jus took it
Where is the best place to park if you are coming from Staten Island?
"excuse me, is this the ferry to Staten island?" as Spider-Man flips over an Ultron Minion and destroys it
There are also bathrooms ON the ferry
Thanks! I didn't get to check them out so I didn't include it in the video.
thank you, I was about to ask the question. it doesnt say it on the FAQ for the ferry website.
The only free ferry in NYC
can you buy beer on the ferry?
The concession onboard was closed during COVID. Not sure if they reopened. But you can also buy from the concessions at the station and bring onboard.
@Urban Caffeine they have not reopened at least at the moment. They should be opening in the near future. I'm an employee that works at the terminal.
Fun fact, the reason why you have a ferry vs a subway connection is because they lobby hard to keep it from happening. They also get tens of millions of your tax dollars every year.
You forgot the dump
Poor persons cruise 😂😂😂
Gotta be inclusive 😁
My brithday was Thursday and I got 10 + presents not all are big
Why not make a video about NY Waterway or SeaStreak for Cape Cos🌊
