    You know why the break down sounds like Sweet Home Alabama? I saw an interview with Dave. Dave used to catch a ride to practice with Cliff, and Cliff being such a massive Skynyrd fan used to crank it all the time. Any way, one time during practice Lars says to Dave, we need to add a part and slow it down here. So as a joke Dave played the sweet home alabama riff, knowing Lars wouldnt know it. (Obviously changing the ending of the picking chords.) Lars was like fuck thats amazing we need to keep that, and the rest is history. True fucking story, ask Dave yourself if you ever get the chance.

    The Mechanix & Jump in the Fire were Mustaine songs through and through penned before he joined Metallica, James never liked Dave's lyrics to either I believe but no doubt avoiding giving Mustaine sole songwriting credits on two songs was also a priority.

      Retro Revelations The Four Horseman lyrics suck dude, simple as that. Dave used to work as a mechanic, and he was probably getting more pussy then the other three the band combined, so there is some real world experience behind those lines. Not saying Dave's lyrics is much better but acting like horseman is some lyrical accomplishment is like arguing lord of the rings is intellectually cultured, goddamn lol.
      Also Dave wrote horseman music in its entirety with Lynyrd Skynrd's help, because it is a castrated version of Sweet Home Alabama Dave admitted it, and the rest of the band was too out of it to catch on. Because Lars wanted a slow part in a song that didn't need it. He dropped the part when Mechanix was recorded as it should be.
      So the corrected credits for Horseman is (Mustaine, King, Hetfield, Hammett) Because Kirk wrote his solo to add spice to that boring ass part.

    I like that we have two versions of Jump and Horsemen/Mechanix as it gives me choices. And regarding Dave's lyrics, I wouldn't call them glam lyrics at all. Traditional RnR, maybe as the genre is based on sex, but these lyrics were raw and metal.

  • @thelando3698
    @thelando3698 6 лет назад +27

    Fun fact
    It sounds like sweet home Alabama because Dave played Sweet Home slow one day, and Lars thought it would sound nice to tangle with

  • @Retrorevelations
    @Retrorevelations 6 лет назад +262

    The Four Horsemen, IMO, is a far better song than The Mechanix. It sounds better slow, the slower middle part is awesome, and the lyrical content is MUCH more interesting.
    And frankly, I'm SUPER glad that Metallica dropped the shitty/super sexual lyrics from Jump in the Fire. That would have made them a bit of hypocritical in their whole "We're totally better than poser hair bands" shtick.
    All in all, Metallica was better off with Dave leaving, and even though he acted traumatized over it for years, DAVE was much better off, as he created Megadeth, and we got TWO great bands. Instead of just one which, let's be honest, would not have survived all that long with Dave and James' clashing egos. The truth many people, including Dave, seem to just not want to touch, is that while he definitely had an INFLUENCE on Metallica, he never really FIT in Metallica.

      The fact remains that Dave Mustaine had a hugh influence on Metallica at the beginning whatever way you look at it. He wrote most of Kill em all and without that first demo, they may not have even got a record deal. While Metallica only managed five or six great albums, they have brought out some shit too. Megadeth and Dave Mustaine have since the start brought out great album after great album for a lot longer time span than Metallica. Mustaine is the better writer and composer in this genre of music for sure.

      I hear you that, man! I like both bands but will be the first to admit that they aren't perfect. Metallica has had a handful of great songs since the black album, but Megadeth has really outpaced them since the 90's, and both bands had ridiculously amazing output in the 80's.

    Nice video, I agree that demos are gems that allow us peeking into the songwriting process, love that.
    Two points however: 1- not true at 01:25 that No Life 'Til Leather contains all the songs from Kill 'em All (most of them, 7 out of 10). 2- Jump In The Fire lyrics (KEA version) are not about mosh pit at live shows (04:13), but are written from the devil's perspective, suggesting how humans are attracted to fall into hell.
    All in all, I think Dave Mustaine is an incredibly talented musician, but his lyrics are totally cringy.

    To each their own when it comes to Mechanix and Four Horsemen. Obviously Mechanix is better if you're talking about thrash metal, although the lyrics are kinda childish but nonetheless and impressive as hell song because of the speed. Four Horsemen has way better melody and some would say it sounds better being slower than Mechanix and I'd probly agree. Both awesome songs, just really depends on your mood.

    I honestly think they changed the lyrics because Dave had big influence (in fact wrote a lot if not all of) The Four Horsemen and Jump In The Fire. If not that, then they changed them because they wanted to not be labeled a “Gay. L. A. Metal” band themselves.

    3:06 it is based on SHA, and Kirk didn’t write it, Mustaine wrote that too

    Only thing was what would be sanitarium and orion together. They had two riffs put together and it never worked well so they split them apart. The Metallica writes songs is they jave a riff and build off it like you normall would but in each time they tour and write a riff each one becomes its own song so like with MoP eight riffs, eight songs

    James changed The Mechanix, Phantom Lord and Jump In The Fire so that he could claim writing credits. Otherwise a guy that they kicked out would have sole writing credits for a third of the album, not a good look.

      Chris Ashby They changed the lyrics to Jump in The Fire and The Four Horsemen because they said that they never wanted to be a Glam/Hair Metal band...

  • @blueblaze5160

    The four horsemen was written after Dave and Co. heard sweet home Alabama and decided to play that same riff and drop the end to it.

    They changed the lyrics because they wanted to just make straight thrash metal and get away from the sex crazed bullshit such as glam metal at the time.

    No Life 'Til Leather and Kill 'Em All have been the only Metallica I've listened to in the last 15 years. Seek & Destroy is a stone cold classic, but having heard it so many times (as a teen I used to listen to it every time before leaving to the city to drink), I would probably pin Jump in the Fire as my favorite now. It kinda is "young people's music," it's hard to get into all the classic Trash in the way I used to, long time ago.

    They probably changed the lyrics to jump in the fire because it was very typical of glam rock to sing about sex. And since Dave probably wrote the lyrics.
