I think the simplest way to put it is the TBM engineers took a lesson from airliner wings because if you look at a 737 for example the aileron is also really small in comparison, and not just small its span is short but its also super narrow front to back. But by using the outboard spoilers in tandem with the aileron you can maintain the benefits of a much bigger flap while still having slow speed handling.
Compare it to its counterparts in the non pressurized sector, the caravan, and Kodiak. they of course have a much higher lift wing and fly slower but also have a much bigger aileron. And if we go further down to something like a 172 or a Cherokee you see the ailerons take up the majority of the wing just to remain effective at slow speeds.
We can compare to STOL aircraft where you have flaperons because now to have any authority and maintain 25-35kn you need the entire trailing edge to be helping you.
All this to say it really is an elegant engineering solution because that little spoiler weighs almost nothing but brings back the authority you need, gives you better flap area allowing slower landings and adds probably 1/10 or less the weight of a longer aileron

TBM is a nice airplane. But my choice is still the EPIC E1000.

The E1000 GX is very compelling. It's good to see more direct competition in this aircraft segment.

Thanks for your comment. All TBM variants, whether its the 700, 850, 900, 910 etc are built on the TBM700 type airframe. Please let me know what information is misleading. Thank you
