Soke Inoue Yoshimi - Normal vs emergency breathing in Karate - Seminar Italy 2013

- Soke Inoue Yoshimi, Rika Usami's legendary master, explaining the difference between "normal" and "emergency" breathing methods in Karate. The former is the regular breathing that we do when we are relaxed. This method should be used during the execution of fast sequences or real-life techniques. Indeed, trying to split (for example) a block technique in two parts - inhalation and exhalation - would result in the body being too stiff, and the technique being too slow and therefore ineffective. Only natural breathing enables the body to move fast and efficiently.
The second approach, emergency breathing, can be used (discreetly) during slow sequences of katas - especially after the execution of challenging sections - to recover energy. It involves the relaxation of the lower part of the abdomen and the consequent automatic inflow of air in the lungs. To demonstrate this concept, Sara Battaglia from the Italian National Kata team performs a sequence from the kata Chatanyara Kushanku.

I recorded this video during Soke Inoue's seminar held in Caorle (Venice, Italy) on 18-20 October 2013. The seminar was organized by Sensei Francesco Favaron, founder of Inoue-Ha Shito-Ryu Italy:

I love watching these old karate masters !, see how fast he moves ! Some of half his age cannot move that fast !
Those videos are Karate gemstones. This is the real karate.
Thank you! There's nothing that compares to his training. I watch his videos weekly and still find new things to learn, from body movement to breathing, etc. Thank you very much
Thanks for watching. I agree, he was great and had a lot to teach.
Very similar to southern Chinese kung fu
Me too! I really wish one of his students who understands his concepts and is a an English speaker would add commentary to these videos.
One of the great realy.great masters .we had.
Such a loving soul..
Exactly, Soke Inoue Yoshimi and Mr. Alessandro Timmi,
Standard breathing is very important and it is practiced with the upper, maximum the medium parts of lungs. Often termed as shallow breathing.
Full oe r here the "Emergency breathing makes use of the diaphragm tknown as the abodominal breathing, -like through navel, which is introduced by conscious breathin out, -pulling our navel in, and is followed by releasing our abdominal muscles, which then activates breathing-in uncounciously, thus giving some extra energy to our next move performed at a high pace.
R.I.P Soke Yoshimi, and may God accept him as an insturctor for guarding angels. Paul, 67, retired instructor.
The sensei is teaching a subtle point that during the transition from a slow movement to a rapid one, how to manage the breathing. He's asking the woman to show two breathing patterns, one stops early at the throat and the next deeper down, to see the difference. But she didn't quite get what he wants.
Great sensei ,great soul .and great teacher .
Che figo questo maestro... Coinvolgente, sorridente, concreto.
Che perdita...
Amazing video and fantastic class, lucky who was there. A note, here the master is referring to Ki (Chinese Qi) and relation to the breathing techniques. The relation could be hard to catch for who’s not familiar with internal power development systems. Easy here is mistake the “emergency breathing” as something similar to western boxing. Is entirely another thing, another kind of power too.
I dont pratice Karate...i practice aikifo and kempo...i think imo the master is teaching about ki, relaxation, extending your breath and the explosion of power launching of a strike....love this sensei...osh
Breath control in karate is fascinating.
O karatê está presente em minha vida 🙏 primeiro Deus 🙏quero estar com vcs 🙏🙏🙏
I love this karate master
I am curious what this guy can do with his strikes???? For some reason I'd suspect he'd hurt a fellow. I may have seen others just as good or better, but looking at this, it looks like he is the best I have seen yet.
Un expert des Arts Martiaux exceptionnel
Muchas gracias!!! Excelente!!! Oss
Muchas gracias!!!! Oss

Alessandro-san, How many of such gems have you kept hidden? Plan to release them in parts ? 😜😜 Hope you are doing well!
Hey Bhaskar, you are right, they have been sitting on my hard disk for too long. Stay tuned, because the best is yet to come.
Nice video Sar
So important all sports especially boxing
They don't understand but move their head yes as I do
But... how about Total Concentration Breathing at all time?
I Don't understand the language is he saying breath out when blocking.
I think he was saying, rather than forced breathing, in and or out, just breathe naturally and stay relaxed. A lot of us focus on the breathe in when contracting, breathe out when expanding(striking, blocking or kicking etc.), and he seemed to say that actually makes for slower and less perfect technique. He also said, reserve the abdominal breathing for emergencies, or only when you're tired and fatigued.
@@davidacobb1 ok thank you
@@davidacobb1Very Good Thanks you Ossu
Ma c'è Sara Battaglia o sbaglio?
Sì è lei.
@@AlessandroTimmi straordinaria.... Tecnica ed eleganza impareggiabili!
😀
I don't understand

This is a true master. But the group. They are all black belts ... How so? They can’t do anything yet. They don't even understand everything he is talking about.
.
If this fellow had a competent translator, knowledgeable of karate, body parts, etc., I know his videos would be excellent, 😉. Hands on best, but he's not here.
基本を忠実に❗️曲がったコトをすなよ。🥸
Bla bla bla.
Nippon jin va saiko!
He must learn english
Might be difficult, considering that he passed away in 2015.
The superior alternate would be for the Italian translator to have learned Japanese, so that there was only one language translation before reaching the audience.
