“There’s something to this,” he says. And he’s not wrong; a more gritty, cinematic, edited format with a tight crowd in a smaller arena. It’s called Lucha Underground.
I recall the producers non stop instructing us in the first Thunderdome live show.... "Clap. Smile. Wave. Thumbs up. Thumbs down. Big energy....!" An attempt certainly was made lol
The fact that you and others had to boo (this person) when you like (this person) is kind of unfair. They could've let the fans only tell them to bring the energy instead of alienating our own "favorites" and "mid" guys.
I’m really loving these video series. Right now I’m still at work, about to clock out for the night, gotta get some McDonald’s breakfast and enjoy y’all’s work. Amazing content
@@MediCali951 yessir them $2 breakfast sandwiches or the 20% off your purchase are goated. As much as I enjoy homemade meals there’s nights where the workload drains you

Underground would have worked as a gimmick match for something like the brawling brutes or even the current "new blood" version of the bloodline but as a segment on its own it was so ridiculous.
The entire Raw Underground was one Big Lipped Alligator Moment. Came out of nowhere, had nothing to do with the rest of the episode, and later quietly dropped and never mentioned again.

I remember this episode as the "Throw stuff at the wall and see if it sticks" episode because of all the desperate attempts they did at this time to gain interest.
I believe the first time Retribution did something was during the whole hacking thing during the Otis and Mandy Rose thing. Because much later on you found out that in Retributions intro that Mustafa Ali was the guy behind all the hacking things and the messages. So technically that wasn't their first debut.
It's weird how we laugh at 2020 Raw Underground, yet love Josh Barnett's Bloodsport which is basically the same thing without the WWE "appeal to kids" thing. And with it having Shayna Bazler at the last show, kind of has the approval of WWE.
The funniest thing about it is Apollo didn't actually keep both belts all the time, I think that they retire the old belt by saying that he's going to give it to his kids
On its surface, RAW Underground wasn't a bad idea. Holding worked shoot fights backstage in a Fight Club type setting could have been interesting. What killed it was the fact they presented it like a Shane McMahon acid trip with zero emphasis on the actual fights.
AEW Pandemic was lightyears ahead of WWE and this was probably WWE:s lowpoint. WWE have now comeback stronger then i have ever seen them outside NXT black and gold.
Raw Underground was a lame attempt to incorporate that scene in No Holds Barred, where they go recruiting to that dive bar and Terry Funk is fighting in an "UNDERGROUND fight club".
Because of Covid and being stuck at home I watched every raw and smackdown live. I would say it kept my sanity but then again I was watching raw and smackdown and PLE’s so maybe I wasn’t lol
@WrestleTalk - First time ever comment. If you apply the 1999 movie’s logic, Raw Underground was connected to Retribution in the same way that Fight Club was connected to Project Mayhem.
Also in this episode Sasha banks used her video editing skills to make a perfectly produced video package about how great she is, but Asuka somehow hacked into the video to speak Japanese menacingly! Also there was a reporter because a box fell over which they referred to as many boxes!

the fact that two guys with nothing of interest to say or do will become GREAT aew world champions a few years later blows my mind.
I still maintain that it's hilarious that they're using the Underground match format successfully in NXT now. They just make it about the wrestling, and not the pretty ladies.
There were even more zany moments from this episode that wasn't in this video like Montez Ford getting poisoned and Samoa Joe defending Tom Phillips from Seth Rollins (I will admit that was cool mainly due to Joe)
Raw Underground is one of the best worst things in wrestling, still can’t believe it happened tbh Edit: Swerve being involved in Raw Underground was not something I expected when watching this video
Honest question, are you showing us footage form WWE in the year 2020, or is this just high quality footage of WCW in the year 1999-2000? Because I can't tell the difference.
Retribution was way worse than Raw Underground. Underground was nothing & I could take a bathroom break, Retribution took people with talent and threw their WWE reputation off a cliff. And it was Mustafa Ali, Mia Yim, Dijack & Shane Thorne who got stuck with a total load of crap (Dio Maddin wasn't anything to begin with, him being a silly masked dork couldn't hurt him).
"...FROM THE COMPANY THAT BROUGHT YOU 'THE INVASION'...THE COMPANY WHICH BROUGHT YOU THE 'BRAWL FOR ALL'...THE COMPANY THAT BROUGHT YOU, 'GREAT BALLS OF FIRE'......"
It's INCREDIBLE to me that no one called this "worst than WCW in 2000." This is worse than ANYTHING AEW has done. That Retribution crap was worse than AEW airing the CM Punk footage.
I'll never forget this episode lol, When Underground started I thought this is like a low budget UFC meets late 90s Shotgun Saturday Night! My gawd is was interesting but so hard to watch lol.. And Shane McMahon should of had his microphone turned off.. Man this was rough!
I really enjoyed this. It's like the next evolution of "Worst Match Ever" which should also be brought back. Hope you do more of "Wrestletalk Watches Shit Wrestling."
I feel like "Why are there sexy ladies?!?" can be a meme. I would love to be watching a Rose Garden speech with Joe Biden, and as he's walking off and the camera pans with him, all of a sudden three strippers appear and Sullivan yelling "Why are there sexy ladies?!? Why are there sexy ladies?!?"
Watching this back in retrospect, it's almost like WWE knew they we're going to get bought out by UFC. It's as if WWE was like hey our guys can do that style of fighting too and TKO was like we will buy your company as long as you never do this garbage again!
I feel like what sets Retribution apart from everything else on the show, and even most other bad angles, is just the sheer number of times they made another bad decision. Raw Underground stayed pretty much the same bad decision every week until they stopped it, all the other terrible angles went in another direction shortly thereafter, but Retribution just kept taking wrong turn after wrong turn.
Raw Underground was a work that was supposed to be like a Fight Club, not a shoot. See Brawl for All for context on how it could've been worse. Side note: this probably may have worked in the late 90's.
I remember Twitter got upset about the "Sexy Ladies" (because of course they did) and then WWE Talent tried defending it? Then the "Sexy Ladies" were dropped anyway and never mentioned again after they debut....
This feels like Art Donovan plopped into KOTR '94: "Hey Pete, what are these guys fighting for? Who's the tall fella at the door? Are the sexy ladies gonna wrestle?"
10:40 to be fair to the ninjas, they're running afoul of the law of conservation of ninjitsu: In any fight, there is a finite amount of ninjitsu available to each side's ninjas to channel; this is why one ninja is an unstoppable killing machine (they can channel all of their side's ninjitsu), while a gang of ninjas are faceless cannon fodder (they have to share all the ninjitsu).
