In this episode, we'll compare ReaTune to CrispyTuner by Brainworx. CrispyTuner, as of this typing, is $399, while ReaTune is included with REAPER. Sure, CrispyTuner has some advanced, powerful, and granular controls, but can ReaTune hold its own with a mediocre vocalist, such as myself?
We'll also cover an in depth tutorial for using ReaTune in manual mode to get to fine tune the performance.

Really it took about the same amount of work. I didn't show the work I did in Crispy Tuner to get to that point.
I do like that CrispyTuner offers a much more granular level of control, you can change any and every parameter on a note by note basis, which is quite powerful

Crispy sounded smoother to me. When you were editing the word 'change' it seemed to be gliding between pitches, where reatune was doing more of a hard step.
Reatune tends to get glitchy at the attacks and transitions. I've spent a lot of time with reatune, and the majority is time spent finessing the start and end points to minimize the glitchiness.
The tone of crispy also sounds a bit nicer to me.

    • @LetsTalkAboutReaper
      @LetsTalkAboutReaper  2 года назад +5

Crispy is good stuff once you learn to use it, no doubt. It offers much more granular controls and you can adjust any parameters you desire on a note by note basis whereas ReaTune is fixed other than you drawing the lines. For example, I set a 50ms attack time in ReaTune and it's global. In Crispy Tuner I could adjust transition and tightness on a single note if I want to better achieve the perfect blend of a little help plus natural vocals

thanks mike! I actually have only used reatune a handful of times, and only used it to correct a phrase or two. I've been using autotune for a few years. I tried the crispytuner trial recently, and I decided that I wanted to save up a bit of cash and finally replace autotune (it has always been such a headache. Literally the only plugin that has ever caused Reaper to crash on my PC, and it happens pretty regularly). But now I'm not so sure that Crispy is worth it after you showed what reatune is capable of.
P.S. also, thanks for sharing this track that you worked on. Hearing this takes me back to my high school days (2004ish). Good times. The vocal melody was stuck in my head the whole day, and I knew that it reminded me of something, but I couldn't put my finger on it. It was driving me crazy. Had to take a deep dive into my ancient collection of CD wallets, and I figured it out. Reminds me of the verse from a track by Emery called "walls"! I was never a huge Emery fan, but I always thought the vocalist was pretty exceptional for that era and genre of music, so you should take this as a compliment!
P.P.S. I'm also diggin this signal chain. It doesn't matter if I'm fucking with guitar, bass, kick, snare, overheads, vocals, synths, organ, piano, etc.... API does not fail to deliver. Also noticed you're using LOADES. I couldn't even tell you had a de-esser on this until I actually looked at what you had in the fx chain window. I have tried a million de-essers and have hated them all. And here you are using a free vst and it's totally transparent. Unless you know some kind of microphone wizardry that takes care of most of the sibilance, then I would have to say this is an impressive plugin. Will give this one a shot.

Does anyone really like their own voice? 🥲
I've never tried Melodyne but I have History recorded vocals that didn't need much, if anything. I'm not a huge fan of vocal tuning, at least not when it's laid on quite thick.
I bought CrispyTuner when it first came to Plugin Alliance, if I recall I got it discounted for around $39. After learning the workflow a bit better, I found I can get some very transparent tuning. I love the ability to control every parameter on a note by note basis. Sure, you set your global parameters for that session but you can find tune everything for each note. And the virtual vibrato is very impressive, how can can set a pre-delay and post-delay to control when the vibrato begins and ends for each note. It has a lot of powerful features that makes it a serious competitor to Melodyne, especially if you catch it on one of Plugin Alliance's monthly fire sales.

I've been watching your videos for a few weeks now and believe that I am now convinced that Reaper is my new DAW of choice. It's taking a while for me to get used to the learning curve, but the more I use it, I'm discovering that it's as full featured as any other Daw.

    • @LetsTalkAboutReaper
      @LetsTalkAboutReaper  Год назад +1

I tend to agree. The learning curve can be steep because we are used to most DAWs having a set way of doing everything.
REAPER is more like a toolkit and raw materials to allow you to craft the DAW you want. Sure it has some limits here and there, but the ability to make the DAW suit your workflow as opposed to having your workflow dictated is worth the occasional minor discomfort. Add to that the fact that the dev is very receptive and responsive to user feedback, and the community contributions to REAPER to add more features , and you have the perfect storm!

How can I be surprised that Myk has such a good & pleasant singing voice? There's just an unfair amount of skill in everything he damn does. Obviously he's done the work!
I was against using these kinds of tools for the longest time and tried to make my own music without it, but I had to finally admit things would have moved along a whole lot quicker had I just fixed errors and kept going rather than record an infinite amount of takes trying to get there by myself alone (as an extremely untrained and under-skilled singer). Reatune suited me fine, was easy to draw with, and didn't sound noticeable to me, so I don't think I've even tried any other pitch correction plugins.

It really looks like Crispy Tune or Melodyne and seems as powerfulf as them (except that it requires a bit of manual work), but it has the advantage of being 100% free and completely integrated into Reaper !
(As ARA plugin Melodyne only allow to render tracks as stems which I don't like, cos it creates more tracks and keep the original muted. I'd prefer the classical render which put plugins offline.)

Takes balls to reveal your pure voice, great Myk, thumbs up! And tasteful singing, too!
However I feel that Reatune is one of the plugins where Reaper falls a bit short. It's great to have it but in daily work it's a) way too time consuming for "invisble" correction and b) just not working for me. As I hear in your example aswell the crispy tuner (which I had never heard of before) nails the notes exactly whereas Reatune doesn't completely. It's near but not spot on.
I still prefer Melodyne for fast and inaudible corrections but it's quite a pity that Reaper is still not able to run ARA on items.
Anyways, congrats on your voice and another great video. Highly appreciated!

They even have a dedicated window popping up which advises you to put Melodyne on the track fx, not the item fx. Now that's not the end of the world and acceptable for single tracks. But if you're correcting a bunch of tracks or even choirs things get time consuming unless you have an endless amount of CPU which can handle Melodyne on 20+ tracks. Let's hope item fx printing for ARA is coming soon in Reaper. Best, Andy

Great melody and vocal man, don't be afraid to set that thing in front of those guitars or at least equal with them. I feel like I have went through periods that I tried to tuck my own vox more than I should but didn't hesitate to put other singers on top of the mix. I used to over compress the vocals a bit because I was too lazy to do the automation, but these days I automate almost everything to try to get the track to breath naturally because I like to hear things come in and out of the mix and "bloom" for lack of a better word. I only started doing this after doing live sound for some really top notch musicians that were super sensitive to compression (I kind of thought over sensitive until I started dialing it back till they were happy) and then I was able to hear what they were doing with it as far as controlling the dynamics on their own. Its really something to behold if you have never witnessed it, when a whole band is able to control the dynamics from a whisper to a scream. I then realized that I can't totally get away with that on recordings because being a classical music fan I understand why we need to squeeze the tracks a little bit because otherwise we'd all be chasing the volume around in our cars trying to get it to a good volume. I've actually had to do that many times listening to classical stuff, quiet passage turn it up and then boom into double Forte turn it down again. So I try to chase the volume a bit so it stays in the top range, but don't compress it so much that it makes that range smaller then it has to be where quiet parts are almost as loud as the peak climax of the song. Lately I have started to even go and automate my Master/Mixbuss track at the very end of mixing to exaggerate the dynamics a little bit. Everyone should try this if they haven't yet. I'd also encourage all to try automation of the master track tempo envelope so that the song slowls a couple bpm into the slow or quiet parts and then speeds back up into the louder faster parts. It doesn't take much, but you'd be surprised how much more natural it can make stuff sound. I started playing with this after I realized how many tracks I loved were not locked into a rock steady click and were probably recorded without a click at all. I think Beato did a video on it) It adds something to the overall feel, because a locked in band live would do this naturally. Most live bands do not have click tracks unless they need to sync with DJ or lighting rig or something. Alt J does this and it's how they get their killer Light show in sync with them. I actually seen them have to restart after kind of a false start and I realized what was happening. I was already thinking they were doing this because of how off the charts the light show was, I could tell the LD wasn't back there busking it live. Anyways great video man and loved the song.

Because as it stands, Crispy Tuner achieved the same result as Reatune but in drastically less time!
It took you +- 15min to get through the manual Reatune adjustments in comparison to less than a minute using Crispy Tuner's automatic adjustment with a few minor tweaks.
Seems odd to want to compare the two in that manner?

I messed with all the settings, watched the tutorials, and still can't make it sound even remotely acceptable, it keeps sounding like a singing computer... any ideas what I could be missing? Thank you for good content, Sir.

I love bx stuff generally but have never liked Crispy Tuner. I don't know why, but it doesn't give me the results I want. I find Waves Auto-Tune easier to use, have you use that one? Thanks for the video!

I've used Waves Tune and didn't care for it. I didn't like CrispyTune at first but fell in love with it after watching a video by the original developer showing a workflow for it. I love having such granular control!
Now, i don't care for ANY of them in automatic mode, though mileage may vary depending on the vocalist, so the power in the graphical mode is amazing! The only thing I really wish it had is target note preview so you can hear what it'll sound like without having to play back the song.
Here's that video, by the way. I got CrispyTuner on sale for $39 so I got no complaints :)

Thanks for this cool comparison. As a long-time Reaper user I have just purchased CrispyTuner because ReaTune seemed to steal a lot more time which I don`t have, yet CrispyTuner does not work as expected in the graphic mode. Obviously because ReWire is not engaged. I have no idea how to do this and I cannot find any information about this problem. How did you solve it? Or as a question to everybody out there who reads this: Who knows how to do it? The graphic mode is actually what I need. So without a graphic mode working properly CrispyTuner is worthless for me.

i'll have to go back and watch this video, it's been a while. Did you add Crispy ReWire to an empty track? Back when i did this video, if memory serves, you had to get Crispy ReWire Device from elsewhere because Plugin Alliance conveniently forgot to include it with the installer. I think they have since corrected the issue.
if you have trouble, hop on Discord and let's discuss since i can't share screenshots here

@@LetsTalkAboutReaper Good morning, Myk. thanks for the immediate feedback. No I did not add CrispyRewire because I did not know that this was required. If I am not wrong Reaper also holds a ReWire tool available but so far I never needed it. Eventually it works with CrispyTuner, otherwise I will contact Brainworx (the developer) and ask for assistance. By the way, I just noticed how much content you already have uploaded on Reaper in RUclips. If these videos are as excellent as the one I watched, I will joyfully subscribe to your channel. :-) Thanks for your feedback again (/from Germany).

Eu tive que usar o Google tradutor, então espero que esteja certo.
Você atualizou o CrispyTuner recentemente? Eles adicionaram o dispositivo de religação de volta ao instalador.

Thanks for the reply! I'm sorry for sending a message in Portuguese, I thought I sent it in English!! I read the article it seems to me that the guy couldn't solve it!! did you have any problems with your crispytune , in your reaper referring to Rewire??

In Reatune, do you know if there is a way to change the color or shading of the notes on the Manual screen in the left column? I can hardly see what those are that are in the black boxes. Very frustrating!!

It's the same as the theme coloring for the midi editor. I'll post a link with some information in a subsequent comment, just in case RUclips deletes it. If so, perhaps you can hop on Discord to discuss further (link in the description)

@@bcain5823 did you try the link I posted? I've not tested but this is what I saw:
The background colors for the ReaTune Manual Correction tab are the same as for
MIDI editor background color (naturals) and
      MIDI editor background color (sharps/flats)
For the Correction tab they are the same as for
Track background (odd tracks) > Correction background
Track background (even tracks) > Correction line

@@LetsTalkAboutReaper I did but the link doesn't explain how to change the colors or even if it can be done. I opened a midi track and the midi editor but didn't see any way to change colors. If it's done through the midi editor then it needs to be explicit.

Crispytuner was on sale for 39 bucks a few weeks back.. the interface is way better than ReaTune so I bought it.. The graphical edit mode is so intuitive and les convoluted than other autotune vst.. GSnap is still a must have but melodyne has gone on the backburner and I've cancelled my Antares subs..
