  • Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo Yoga Chromebook C630. This is a premium 15.6” Chromebook with 360 degree hinges and your choice of a full HD or 4K IPS touch screen (no pen support) at a much more affordable price tag than Google’s Pixelbook. The laptop currently starts around $510 on Lenovo’s site, and standard features include a midnight blue aluminum casing, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 64GB or 128GB storage and your choice of an Intel 8th gen Core i3 or Core i5 CPU. The laptop runs Chrome OS with support for Android apps.

While I'm normally in agreement with most of your reviews, I feel this one didn't paint a full picture of the Lenovo C630 Chromebook. The ability to install Debian based Linux apps, while still in Beta, kicks the doors open on what this machine is able to do. It's possible to install GIMP, Libre Office, Firefox, Tor, Crossover, Wine, Terminator, Wireshark, etc. Pair that with an 8th generation quad core i5 and you have a very capable machine that's far more than just a web browser..... oh yeah and there's crouton to run a full fledged Linux Distro.

@N0 One454 Are you trying to say this is priced too high by pointing out it compares to the price of an older used model that can only found on eBay? Seems like a terrible comparison. Also saying that someone could install any OS on the used Windows machine, yet then turn around an imply the same person must gain knowledge to turn on the beta Linux option implies you aren't really giving this a fair judgement. My guess the OS wasn't mentioned is because it isn't part of what they do here. Else we'd also see feature comparisons between the Apple OS and Windows with each review.

I've run crouton on a number of chromebooks. This is the first one where I haven't. It's really not necessary. Crouton offers the advantage of a full linux desktop, but at the price of a unified experience. This (as well as other modern chromebooks) offers the advantages without the disadvantage. There's a unified experience available without the clunkiness that is crouton.
That said, I agree 100% with you, that the review sells this point short.
This has been my daily driver for almost a year. Because I can literally do anything here (without crouton) that I can do any any Windows laptop, but with better specs and performance, at a lower price.
AND, without the endless waiting for updates to install for an hour at a time (which I still get on my upper-end windows laptops when there's a serious upgrade).
Of course, there is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to installing linux apps. That is a true downside. I'd like to see them simplify this with something more similar to the Ubuntu store integrated into ChromeOS.
That said, this machine is very capable, and very powerful. As a person who is comfortable with linux, I can say hands-down, that it is, overall, more capable than any Windows or Mac laptop I've had -- including Macbook Pros and Surfaces that I've had within the last 5 years.

I love my Samsung chrome book 3; small, lightweight which makes it quite portable comparable to my other laptop. It's mainly constructed with plastic but solidly built. Has a long lasting battery, once I streamed youtube for little over 9hrs through hdmi. There are plenty of things that one can do in a browser that a lot don't realize, which makes it great for school & business. For the next gen I'd like IPS screen (also at least keep the anti glare screen as an option), a faster processor, well obviously & backlit keyboard. Hopefully doing all this while keeping the price low. - I'm in my 20s btw :D

Here's an idea for Chromebooks and laptops especially laptops with fans.
A solid block of aluminum, that connects to the laptop with a custom detachable cable designed specifically for every laptop.
Inside it will fit a full-sized m.2 SSD.
And it sticks to the bottom near the back to prop it up.
And it will be just tall enough to fit the average HDMI cable.
Along with a few other USB 3.0.
And if this becomes popular enough laptops will have the material underneath the USB port most likely to be used removable to make room for a custom cable flush with the laptops design.

Just compare the hardware specs and ignore the software. 15" touch display, Intel CPU, 8gb ram, SSD hard drive, and metal chassis? That's going to get you to $450 easily. Levovo flex 15" with Windows currently at $490 without touch display.

You missed 2 major things I just CANNOT get a straight answer on, are both usb c ports for charging? And does either of the screens have pen support, spent an hour with lenovo cust. Support asking them these questions and it was obvious they were mixing up info from the C630 Wos and the C630 chromebook?

  • @ryanwakebradtelle8682
    @ryanwakebradtelle8682 5 лет назад

Model number c630, I don't know which one that is off top of my head, i do want one so I should probably figure that out.
Regardless, I wish the names weren't a serial number that you had to look up to see how powerful it was.
Intel is a little bit better, or at least the way it's marketed on pre-built PCS, because you can phraze the model as. I5 2600 3.4ghz.
This gives you an idea of the generation and how it stacks up with base clock, also if it's not in the title core count is easy enough to figure out most of time.
I know especially with low-end CPUs like in some Chromebooks it's not the best idea to advertise that, but if you're buying a Chromebook and your not willing to spend 500-$1000 you're probably better off going to 8 gigs before an i5, because the moderate speed boost alone isn't going to be more important another upgrade like storage or Ram.
Plus the i3 vs i5 as long as it isn't the Lowe's one, can probably do 90% of the things the i5 can.

The OS is irrelevant in my opinion. I assume anyone who buys a 15" or more laptop (regardless of the OS) doesn't have or want an external monitor hooked up. I personally prefer to keep a laptop to 13" or less and then add an external display if I want to set up a work area with a bigger screen.
