Chromebooks, by their very nature, are mobile machines built for individuals on the go. With their quick boot times, nimble nature, and always-connected personas, Chromebooks are found often in the hands of individuals who value those traits. People who value the light and quick nature of Chromebooks tend to find themselves on the go a lot, in places like coffee shops and airports, trying to get a few things done on the move.

First decent review of this device, all the others keep going on about how MASSIVE it is and how silly it is in tablet mode. It obviously hasn't occurred to them that a 15.6 inch chromebook with high quality build and a great screen is what a lot of us have been crying out for. Good job.

Me either but I'm also a coffee snob who likes to make his own so I'm very odd that way. When on vacation and I do have to pay someone to make my coffee I will say I do see a good amount of people working. My guess is they are either on the road, on the way to the office, or in a work situation where they don't really have an office.

Just got this based on your review and the deal that you posted. Just starting to play with it, I used a Macbook Pro for 7 years through college and grad school and have been using a Surface Pro 4 for the past 3 years as my work computer. This is the first computer I've purchased since my $2500 Macbook, so I'm excited to see how this guy handles everything I throw at it.

I must amend this comment to say that I returned the Yoga within a week of receiving it. The camera was faulty and only worked once. And I just couldnt live without pen support. So I sent it to be repaired and that's when the customer service nightmare began. To make a long story short, customer service was terrible and it nearly 6 weeks for me to get my money back.
Instead, I bought a Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 and am absolutely in love. :)

It seems to be that the ultimate setup would be a chromebook and a PC (windows or Mac or linux) at home. With the CB, use a wireless carrier's internet solution (USB antenna, etc) for encrypted internet over their wireless network with the addition of VPN tool to protect your browsing information location, etc. and also to tunnel into your PC at home when you need to do things that your CB can't do or can't do well enough.
Fifteen years ago with much slower internet I would often tunnel into my workstation back at the office to work on SolidWorks from anywhere that I had internet. Why install it on my home machine when all I needed was the internet. Now with the internet being everywhere and 25 times or more faster, just have that PC hiding on the garage or in a corner chugging away for more complex tools or work that you need done. Chromebooks are like the ideal base PC for most tasks as well as a thin client like device for connecting to more powerful machine when needed.
Get the best of both worlds and use the one device to interface with all your tools.

I am still rocking my Dell 13 i5 touch. It's a monster and it even allowed for an ssd upgrade to 512 gb.
Aside from a few chromeboxes it's as fast a cb as I've seen. So this Lenovo really piqued my interest... a 4 core i5 with 8 gigs of ram, a 1080 ips touch screen (4k woud be fantastic but not necessary) convertible, usb-c, and decent local storage (even if the substandard emmc variety)
But the ridiculous omission of a backlit keyboard on a hardware set such as this is a nogo.. light the keyboard, include a display/cpu/ram upgrade option, then I'll bite.

Just ordered the middle of the road build on Lenovo’s website. Very excited to give Chrome OS a try. When I was playing around with this Best Buy model I was thoroughly impressed with the weight relative to size. The X360 for some reason felt heavier compared (I know it isn’t but it’s a mental trick I guess).

I bought this machine off the back of this review and I'm very close to really loving it. I'd like to highlight, for me, an important omission...for web meetings that camera really isn't good enough in my opinion and the speakers are just as you say...OK.
I'd like to add that the camera failed on me and is back in the shop for repair...which somewhat undermines the premium "tank" perspective.
It's a great machine though...can you make a note to check the camera for web meetings in future...kinda important for those using this machine for work. One-finger opening would have been nice too.
Finally, I'd like to add I've had this driving 2 x 27inch 1080p monitors on top with no problem at all.
p.s. Really enjoying your reviews. I'm a Chromebook convert as a result of that machine and this review...Windows feels really clunky to me now.
p.s.s. btw mine definitely has a backlit keyboard !

Has made me consider the x360 near the bottom of the list where a lenovo is first.

I'm glad that Chromebooks are starting to improve their processors, but this laptop still seems very expensive for what you get. This thing sells for $700 USD. That's more than I paid for my Pixelbook. If what you actually need is a portable workstation, there are 100 Windows laptops out there who would do the job better. I love Chromebooks as much as anyone here, but PCs are the dominant force when it comes to productivity, workstations, etc.

I'm not a road warrior so maybe I'm crazy but I disagree that a large laptop is what you would want on the go. If I'm working in shops, bars, or on planes, I want something that will always fit small areas. I've used my little 10" Asus flip on trips and it has been great. Plenty of times I would have not been comfortable with a larger screen just because of no space. If I were on the road and working in nothing but offices with my own desk everywhere I went then yes the bigger screen and keyboard would be much more important. But otherwise, I just can't see being able to use a bigger laptop in small areas. I'm hoping that others feel the same way because I would jump on a small 10" Chromebook that comes with a good CPU and RAM. Sadly I think I'm in the minority and the smaller Chromebooks will always be targeted to the lower end of specs.

Video idea \ question: we've all been happy with 4gb of ram in general but with the more readily availability of running Android apps on Chromebooks, should I just go with 8gb like on the c630? Is more ram better if utilizing Android apps while running multiple tabs?

What's this development environment you're using?
First I thought it's Cloud9, but on a closer look it's something different.
Could you make a video at any point on what options are there for software developers on Chromebook? I think that would be interesting for quite a few of us over here.
So far I'm really happy with my set-up using cloud9, but would be really interesting to see what other options are there which you have used and possibly have an opinion on.

Got the i5 yesterday with 1080p and backlit keyboard for 580 euros. So far so good, the only thing I wish was a way to disable the backlit during the day. Maybe there's one way, but I didn't find it yet. oh yes, and 100GB of cloud storage for 1 year 😎

In the UK the Lenovo Yoga C630 Chromebook equipped with Core i5 / 8 GB RAM / 128 GB SSD based on model number, 81JX0003UK, had a backlit keyboard (see Lenovo Product Reference site psref.lenovo.com/Product/Lenovo_Tablets_and_Convertibles/Yoga_Chromebook_C630 ). This was selling for £699 which by UK standards was a great price. It appears the Lenovo UK website has now sold out (in less than one month) as there are now no models available for purchase, and I cannot find any UK retailers selling this device. Hopefully they will re-appear for sale in the near future.

Sorry to go a bit off topic Robbie, you mention Nord VPN, which I use but it would be great to have an expert overview on how to set it up on a chromebook. Also maybe pros and cons for Android app version and Chrome browser extension on a chromebook.

i almost plan to get this until you say no backlit , and the screen color that you view some website looks dull to me. If they put a anti-glare screen, with backlit, this thing will be perfect to me.

I'm really disappointed that these Chromebooks don't have a temperature control for the monitor. This yoga has a very warm yellowish tint to it and that's a big turnoff for me.☹ Even my iPhone has a temperature control to make it a cooler less yellow screen.
