My wife and I will be in Budapest in early December, so thank you for this information. We have been looking at all of your information about Budapest and believe that you provide the best information. Thank you!
@PaulHtmnn I wholeheartedly agree with you that this is the best RUclips channel from Hungary informing foreigners about Hungary! Anyway, I'm a local and always recommend his videos to people from abroad.:) I love his work and how enthusiastic and positive he is!

Love this video! I’m an expat here and really enjoy your videos - always helps me further explore the city. And randomly, I saw you and your wife shopping one weekend! Didn’t want to be a creeper so didn’t say hi, but to me you’re a local celebrity! 😊
I appreciate the example of asking for the daily discount meal in hungarian. I can speak, not very well, but it's helpful to hear the proper way to formulate the question.
Next years goal is to visit Hungary during Christmas market time. I've never been to Hungary during this time and would love to experience it. Do they start on the same day every year? Koszonom szepen Akos!
Hey there! The Two Large markets start much earlier compared to the rest, but in all honesty you should try visiting in early December, then more markets are also open. Usually the normal time for Christmas Markets to Open is the 1st Advent weekend. This year that's December 1st, and Next year it's November 30th 😊
Hi Ákos, I was in Budapest for nine days including last weekend. I can honestly say Hungary has the best food and best public. I am visually impaired and use a white cane. People on the road and on public transport are so observant and respectful, no one bumped into me or tried to squeeze pass me unlike many cities in other countries. I was so impressed while staying in Budapest. I also went to Christmas market in front of the basilica, although being expensive, the grilled sausages and stuffed cabbage were worth trying. Maybe you already know, but I discovered a very nice, good priced restaurant called Kupak on Dob ut 2. Especially I loved lecso and chicken paprikas there. Always thanks a lot for great videos.
Thank you so much for your message and sharing your experiences of your visit! 😊 I'm really happy that you had an excellent time in spite of being visually impaired, especially because I feel that there is still a lot for this city to improve in this area. I have not heard about Kupa restaurant but taking note of it for a future visit 😊
great vid chap my mouth is watering looking at all that great food. hope you have a great Christmas and new year . im going to see if i can get over for the xmas market .
Good evening and a big thank you for all of the information you’ve shared in your videos over the past year! My wife and I arrived to Budapest from the island of Guam Tuesday and have been enjoying many of your recommendations. Appreciate all of your wife’s hard work…. And yours as well. Happy Holidays
Thank you so much! Especially because you also live in a Wonderful City. I remember how Paris amazed me when I was there on a Student trip several years ago 😊
I'm from RSA and would like to relocate to Budapest one these days and thank you for making everything clear for one to know what to expect in terms of expenses living in Budapest
I will be visiting your beautiful city next weekend with my partner for my birthday ! Yiur videos are fantastic! Thank you for posting thrm and for all your awsome tips, we will try to follow them all and enjoy as many things as possiblr in just 4 days ! 😍💕
Hi, Ákos I would like to thank you very much as the tips on your channel helped me to discover Budapest in the best possible way. I was at the lighting of the Christmas Tree that took place on the 17th of November and I am preparing a feature tomorrow on my channel.
Hey there! The one at the Basilica opens from 11:00 and close at 22:00, but on Fridays and Saturdays they are open till 23:00. The one on Vörösmarty square is open till 21:00 but on Friday and Saturday it's 22:00 😊
Personally, I also liked the previous tree better, but this light decor at the top is really nice, a mix of the old tree and this light in the air would be better I think 😊🎄
I'm from abroad and I visited on the same day you posted :) One think I'll add is a charity stall - they have nice prices if you want to buy cute christmas tree decorations, felt ornaments for example. If you go out of the basilica they're on the right - it's called Ökumenikus Segélyszervezet and has a blue logo.
Sheep usually enjoy being robbed... We'll enjoy the atmosphere but will definitely go elsewhere to taste quality food at an affordable price. Thanks for this video!
Hey there! I will be honest, the last time I went "into the city to paaaarty" on New Years eve was almost 20 years ago. What I can tell you is that there are pubs, bars and clubs open and they will be busy for sure, on the streets people will walk around, drink and hop from one bar to the next (where they fit in) and having a good time. And there will be fireworks, but not organized by the government, it will be fireworks by the locals. This time of the year it is allowed to purchase fireworks and use them at midnight (but they will use them earlier anyways...😅). So in general I cannot tell any specific place in the city unfortunately, the city itself will be very lively and busy thats for sure.
I went last year! Had the best time but it was raining and very cold. I bought the Goulash in the bread bowl and the bowl was wet but still very tasty!
Hey there! Óbuda Christmas Market is smaller and less expensive. There are some smaller Christmas markets scattered around the city, like behind Corvin Plaza or next to Allee Shopping mall but they are more laid back, nothing special mainly aiming at locals who just want a mulled wine or sth. There's also a small one in Újpest which is very laid back and calm. Our video from Last year covers Óbuda and Újpest Christmas markets as well 😊
Are you planning to go to Midnight Mass on Christmas? It would be wonderful to see a video of that from St. Stephen's Basilica or from St. Mathias Church. Or even Christmas Day Mass.
Hey there! To be honest, we don't visit Midnight's Mass and don't plan on visiting, it is very very popular activity amond those who regularly go to Churches. I believe they always do a live tv-cast of the Mass, I will check if that will be available online.
Noway... 15 years ago, when i lived there in Budapest, a plate like the first one would have not cost more than 2.200 HUF., being generous. It is a crap to see how much more expensive has become BP. It is not a cheap city anymore.
@@StuffedCabbageAdventures Is this phenomenom happening too in other important cities like Debrecen, Győr, Pecs...? BP is becoming an "island" in Hungary, increasingly more separated from the hungarian day a day reality. Well, more than BP, we should say the touristic center of BP. Like other places, tourism seems to be an emeny of the locals... A Szabad Hazáert!
It happens everywhere. Difference in prices was always there between Budapest and cities in the countryside, but prices generally have gone up everywhere. Perhaps the "scissor" between BP and Countryside has opened up more lately, but unfortunately people all over Hungary feel the price increase. Still, a Seasonal Christmas Market or a Festival will always be different wherever it is, prices there will always be even higher vs everywhere else.
You might have already made a videos on this topic. Are there some words that we should know when visiting Budapest. We speak English, but it feels impolite to not at least try to greet people in their native language when visiting a country. Any greetings we should practice? Are there any cultural rules we should be aware of?
Hey there! I believe in our 15 Things you must know about Budapest I list a few good to know words and phrases, but we are thinking about a dedicated video on the topic eventually :) Nevertheless, a "Köszönönöm" (Thank you) Goes a Long way with us Hungarians :)
Hello great videos on Budapest...I am visiting for a few days at the end of May where can I find hand painted pictures of the City of Budapest which markets/stores etc? Thanks
Hey there! Usually on weekend markets for example at Gozsdu Udvar there may be a few artists who offer their Budapest inspired Art for sale. Or on the Wamp Designer Market for example.
@@StuffedCabbageAdventures Any must see sights if you had just 2 days in Budapest and which attraction would you skip? Is a tour of the parliament building worth it? or is seeing it from the outside impressive enough? Thanks
Hey there! The Inside of the Parliament is nice if you are really into Architecture and History, but it's something you can skip, I would however either go into Matthias Church or the St Stephens Basilica, those are nice and unique and you can get in any time without a scheduled tour to wait for. If it's only 2 days then I would focus my time on the Castle District and the downtown area of Budapest (With Parliament and Basilica and in the night to check out the Bar area with the Ruin Bars).
@@StuffedCabbageAdventures Thanks again for the ideas...if you ever need tips on Vancouver BC or Canada in general...I would be glad to help...can't wait to see Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna and Cesky Krumlov.
As always, really helpful information, not related to this video, but i remember on some video you had the map link of trustable exchange offices in budapest, i could not find one, if you don't mind, can you please share it
Hey there! We didn't recommend specific places for exchanging money, we may have given the advice to look for them in the city center around Deák Ferenc tér and Váci utca. Look for places that are part of a franchise or chain or Exchange offices with direct doors to the street, not some shady one at the end of a dark alley 😅
@ thank you ! Sorry to bother you with questions, but can you recommend some biggest supermarkets near city center? It may not be hypermarket but the chains biggest store, i tried google it but unfortunately sizes are not indicated 🥲
Hey there, hypermarkets are available in the outskirts or close to Budapest, but not in the center. Larger super markets can be mostly found in Shipping malls like Westend City Center, Allee, Corvin Plaza or Mammut but there is a large Tesco close to Újpest Városkapu subway station 😊 interspars are usually larger super markets.
Hey there! For sure you'll be able to get to the city from the airport. 😊 Transport won't stop, they will become less frequent yes, but they will still operate, you'll be able to get to the city center. Nothing to worry about 😊
Hey there! Hungary uses the Forint. While Euro may be accepted at most places the exchange rate will be terrible. You can easily get by just with a bankcard, even at these Markets the stalls accept cards. On smaller markets (not christmas markets) you may need cash, and then you'll need to use the Hungarian Forint (HUF)
Hey there! Mulled wine (3dl) starts from about 1500 HUF (about 3.5 euro), Beer has same price but it's 5 dl. A shot of Pálinka is around 2600 HUF (around 6.5 Euro).
The Christmas Markets close around 15:00 on 24th. They are open on 25-26 from 11:00 till around 20:00. However most restaurants and shops will be closed. Generally as 24th Christmas Eve is the most important part of Christmas for us Hungarians, almost everything will be closed in the evening of that day as people spend their time with their families.
Went there last year. I was amazed at how many things had MADE IN CHINA on them. It was just as bad in Munich. Vienna was pretty decent but they might have remembered to remove the labels. We went thinking merch was going to be authentic to the area. I guess not anymore. At least the atmosphere was amazing. We had an amazing hotel at the Aria.
Yeah, that is an unfortunate thing, most of the cheaper items are indeed imports. There are a few handcraft and artisan goods but those are very pricey. I like the local artisan sausages and hot sauces, and some of the wines they have 😊
Totally agree. You can go to one of the local (non-tourist) markets and get a small take away plate of stuffed cabbage for 1600 forint, not 6300 forint.
Since your review is in English, i assume that it is made for tourists, and for tourists, paying 15-20 dollars or euros for food is not expensive. Here in the States, you pay around $13 for a glass of domestic beer and $12-15 for a shot, on a regular sports event, or in a bar. For local hungarians, it is expensive though..Just my 2 cents...
Indeed if I sometimes compare to other cities especially in western Europe, the prices may not be too different here now, however unfortunately many people still believe that Hungary is a super cheap eastern european vacation destination where you can enjoy your holiday on a dime, but that was true about 10-15 years ago, and it's no longer the case, so while from a locals perspective it is expensive, we still highlight it for the foreign visitors as well to set their expectations and not to think that it will be a super cheap vacation.
Sad to hear that, although unfortunately that price kind of checks out, perhaps it was a "special" langos with "special cheese"... I heard horror stories of even more expensive Lángos being sold, so it's likely not an intentional ripoff, but still way toooo overpriced compared to what it normally costs 😟 Nevertheless, I hope you are enjoying the rest of your stay in Budapest! 😊
The thing is that Christmas Markets have never been the same cultural thing here as they are in Germany for example. The city center markets were always something people here considered selling expensive stuff. Christmas was always more of a personal family thing and not a community experience on a Christmas Market. Also over the last decades as Budapest became more popular with visitors, the city center became Tourist oriented and businesses focused on people with more money to spend (western tourists), vs the locals. Unfortunately the Christmas Markets in the center are business Oriented, not culture oriented, the market at the Basilica doesn't have decades of tradition. It's the reality... And a mirror of the current economic situation where people want to grab as much cash as possible as everything else is getting more and more expensive. Nevertheless, I still enjoy the Markets, the vibe is for free, I am not forced to buy anything there 😊
How is it that I have a strange liking to every Hungarian men I've come across to. I have no real life Hungarian friends and I live halfway around the world (Philippines). I must be Hungarian in my past life or I have Hungarian genes I don't know about. Hungary is now one of "must-trave" list. Originally for Europe, it was only UK, France, Italy, Greece, Germany and Russia once the war ends but Hungary is now up there.
Was in that market a while ago, totally rip off, pork goulash with french fires which is just like half of the plate for 5,990 or almost €15, never again will eat on Christmas Market
I'm sorry to hear you had this kind of experience 😟 It is truly sad that every year the feedback is the same about the prices and the organizers don't intend to improve so that these experiences may go away....
I personally like that better, it's easier to trace the transactions and less room to scam by giving back less change etc. Also there's no need for people to exchange money, they can just use their cards 😊

Generally as 24th Christmas Eve is the most important part of Christmas for us Hungarians, almost everything will be closed in the evening of that day as people spend their time with their families.
There are more Christmas markets scattered around the city. For example next to Allee Shopping Mall
Yep, I like the one at Óbuda, and the one at Újpest is also nice and laid back 😊
WOW WOW WOW BRO
@StuffedCabbageAdventures Ákos köszönöm a részleteket....
I like the local artisan sausages and hot sauces, and some of the wines they have 😊
That plate of stuffed cabbage is $22 Canadian. I'm sorry, I know food prices go up but that is expensive. 🐾🐾🇨🇦
Totally agree. You can go to one of the local (non-tourist) markets and get a small take away plate of stuffed cabbage for 1600 forint, not 6300 forint.
at 05:14, 13,50€ for a sausage and 2 slices of bread, WTF? Tourist tax at peak.

😉👍🏻😉
Got charged 3,100 ft for cheese langos today, I think I got ripped off 😢, but I just did it for experienced
I really can't understand why budapest xmas markets r more expensive than german or austrian, despite its economic situation is weaker
I'm sorry to hear you had this kind of experience 😟 It is truly sad that every year the feedback is the same about the prices and the organizers don't intend to improve so that these experiences may go away....
all those markets are just tourist traps with crazy prices...someone near basilica are asking 7.000 forints for one sausage in baguette? avoid...
Those prices... what a joke. I feel and share the pain of locals honestly.
How come no cash??? What a joke…
I personally like that better, it's easier to trace the transactions and less room to scam by giving back less change etc. Also there's no need for people to exchange money, they can just use their cards 😊
