Y’all I needed this today. I’m a teacher in Tennessee and I came to school today to find homophobic hate speech written on my board by (MIDDLE SCHOOL) students. It was so upsetting and then it was scary because I’m not out to my administration or coworkers and now everyone’s talking about why kids wrote that on MY board. Ugh. I feel so alone and I really needed my chosen family today ❤️

Definitely have cried several times in the bathroom at work after being awkward with coworkers 😅

I relate to this comment both with the stress of social interactions and finding out about a shared birthday with one of the podcast members.

I’m autistic and worked a customer service job in high school - I didn’t put up with any bullshit from the Karens. Replying with facts unbothered really shuts shit down 😂 I remember I was told that I wouldn’t amount to anything in life (am now a very successful biomedical engineer) because I wouldn’t let a Karen use an expired coupon. As an autistic who works in retail, I definitely feel like I'm better at telling people "no" and curbing nonsense. I'm not bulletproof, but people have as hard a time reading my body language and facial expressions as I have with theirs, so disruptive people never know if they get under my skin. When they can't ruffle you, they tend to back down. Masking all day is EXHAUSTING, but my customer service experience has really helped me develop my soft skills, which is going to be a huge asset as a software developer.

I really look forward to this show every Wednesday! A highlight of my week! Grandma died a few days ago and let me tell you, cremation ceremonies set to twee, upbeat Irish jig music are... surreal. The priest said 'We bequeath Betty to the mercy and love of...' and I thought he was going to say the flames but he said God. Me and other brother kept discreetly elbowing each other. I'm pretty sure the priest was gay also so I kept making eye contact with him and giving him flirty looks. Tempting a priest is 5 points and succeeding is 20.

Not a criticism of anyone on this podcast, but this conversation highlights another impossible standard of our society:
We’re supposed to be humble and acknowledge our privilege. Simultaneously, a woman is not supposed to acknowledge any scenario where society may place her above other women. Because women are expected to remain beneath others.
Society says we’re supposed to BE beautiful, but we cannot dare to FEEL beautiful, or we should expect to be punished and torn down if we dare take up that space for ourselves.
Kudos to Mak for speaking the truth.

I agree being straight passing means you get more practice in coming out to relative strangers. I'm pretty relaxed about it now, which I think helps put folks at ease. I do think that (for me) when not in an unsafe environment like Alayna described, I feel a responsibility to represent & mention my wife to as many folks as possible. Both to normalise being LGBTQ, and because most folks take it well- even folks who're kinda homophobic when there are no gays around! So it helps them grow as people, & helps allies feel trusted with that information

43:46 as a femme who grew up in a small town a few hours from where Mak is, i could say sooo much about this if I had more time. But to try to keep this short, I’d say it has to do with femininity being linked with certain social skills (probably a better way to phrase that but best I got atm) and having more experience seeing people take off their “politically correct” mask. Eventually you develop a deeper sense of who’s safe and who’s potentially dangerous, kinda like how we learn to assess if a man is a threat… Also if we’re wrong in the initial assessment and their “energy” shifts, we can just giggle and play it off as a joke

I listen to the podcast twice. First time on Spotify when I'm having lunch and second time at home on RUclips because watching your expressions makes it ten times funnier somehow. 🤣🤣 (Also Sidney's voice... Excuse me. Sorry?🔥 And funny too!)

Ashley quote of "I like this hat" was the most dad energy
Alayna saying "Stop it with THE GLARE" absolute mom energy
    Mak existing "TEENAGE ENERGY"
    And as always FOREVERRRRRRR...DOG

this is hands down my favorite podcast ( *the other pod* a close second). i love it so much. the lighting changes between people talking was a spot chaotic this episode, but i’m not sure if it’s like that usually because i am usually a listener.
