  • Thom Bell and attorney David Steinberg discuss The Spinners manager Buddy Allen and how he needed a Las Vegas style hit to get the Spinners booked in Vegas and at the same time Dionne Warwick approached Thom and wanted a #1 Song, as she had yet to land one… And that's how "Then Came You" happened.

I was a friend of Thom Bell for many years, starting when we first met in 1966. Over the years we were friends, I was fortunate enough to go to various recording sessions with him at Sigma Sound.
I actually drove him to Sigma, as he didn't drive at the time. I remember well, being at the Stylistics sessions for "Stop, Look, Listen to Your Heart." I was in amazement watching this genius at work, and had to pinch myself at the time, realizing how lucky I was to be in the presence of this genius---the very musical genius whose music I had fallen in love with since the release of "He Don't Really Love You" by the Delfonics years prior. Several years later, as our friendship grew, Thom asked me to write the liner notes for the Spinners album "Pick of the Litter." Our friendship lasted many years---even through his move to Washington State. A truly wonderful human being, a kind-hearted, understated soul, who never sought the limelight--because he didn't have to. A true architect of the Philadelphia Sound, a true gentleman to everyone he met, and a musical genius I'll always, fondly remember with a smile. Love you and will miss you, man...........

I was just listening to "Hurry Up This Way Again" by The Stylistics last night. That one is downright sexy. He did great work with The Spinners, New York City, Elton and Dionne, etc. but his production and songwriting with The Stylistics can still take my breath away.

The ONLY thing wrong with that Spinners Live album is that "Love Don't Love Nobody" ends on one side, so you have to flip the album over to the hear Pt.2.
Otherwise, Steinberg may be right: it is the greatest album ever.
