Thom Bell, Philadelphia Soul Icon, Dies at 79
The songwriter was best known for working with the Stylistics, the Spinners, the Delfonics and more.
Thom Bell, the iconic pioneer of Philadelphia soul in the 1970s, died on Thursday in Bellingham, Washington. He was 79.
The news was first reported by Philly R&B radio station 105.3 WDAS-FM, with host Patty Jackson saying, “We remember Thom Bell: record producer, arranger and songwriter known for his work with Linda Creed, Gamble and Huff, the many hits, the creators of Philly soul.” The station also paid special tribute to the late musician on its website by sharing a video of the Stylistics’ 1972 Bell-produced single “People Make the World Go Round.”

There’s a lot wrong with this tribute including mispronouncing his name throughout. Captioning pictures incorrectly, like showing his songwriting partner Linda Creed instead of his wife when referring to family. Thom was a legend, definitely someone to look up to, who helmed timeless soul classics and worked with the cream of R&B artists, particularly in the 1970s. He was born in Jamaica, but that wasn’t mentioned. He has left an indelible mark on American popular music. There were few like him. An icon to be sure. RIP Mr. Bell.

After he died, a family member wrote that Tommy was not born in Jamaica, but in Philly and directed us to the 1950 census. His mother and father was born in Maryland and Virginia. His maternal grandfather was born in Jamaica, and came here from Panama, probably worked on the canal. All his brothers and sisters were born in Phill too. Back in those days it was common for blacks saying they were anything but black Americans.

Thank you Bro from the bottom of my heart to the depths of my soul for you and all of the wonderful works you've done. My world is empty without you my brother.

How many country songs can you name that Gladys Knight made R&B and pop hits ! As Rufus Thomas once said “, music doesn’t belong to one race , it belongs to everybody”. He said that after being a black DJ, he was criticized first playing Elvis Presley music on his R&B show.

@@henrigeorge9311 If you read all the comments. Thom always lied about him being Jamaican. You guys are probably not from that era. many blacks would say they were born somewhere else, for whatever the reason. I have a buddy from Trinidad who told me while we working in Indiana, his supervisor said; that he liked blacks, but not those born here. Tom said; he used to say he used to see Bob Marley when he was a kid in Jamaica, that's when I knew it was B.S. When Thom passed, a family member stated in a public obituary, that Tommy was not born in Jamaica, WI. He wasn't born in Jamaica, NY. And he linked us to the 1950 Census, where it shows, he had older stepbrother and younger siblings, listed as being born in Baltimore and Philly. His 2 parents were born in Maryland and Virginia, not Jamaica, and this is a public legal document on the web. The mother's father, (Maternal Grandfather) was born in Jamaica, and came to the U.S, via Panama. My cousin born on the same birthday as Thom, used to tell big lies too. Thom Bell was never a Jamaican Immigrant. He's no more Jamaican, than I am Bajan. He probably thought no one would find out. Computers, records and DNA have proved many people lied. Today, what you say may bite you in the ass. So his older sister was born in Philly, his younger brother also. But, he was born in Jamaica, from US parents? Check it out. 1950 Census. Make sense. Thom was not the only person that did this. Before the black, I'm proud movement. Many blacks would say they were from Cuba and PR. One thing for sure, he was from another world of music.

@@riorich I have not seen his birth certificate, neither have you. I can only by what Thom Bell told me, what two other people who had worked with him told me and what I've read.
I was performing at a club on South Street in Philadelphia named Grendel's Lair in 1977. Unbeknownst to me the manager of the club had invited Thom Bell to come and see me perform. After finishing my set he told me that Thom Bell from Philadelphia International Records wants to talk with me. That's when he told that he was born in Jamaica but came here when he was about four years old. He also told me he was thinking of the idea of fusing R&B and Reggae. That was my only time meeting him.
You have not presented any undisputed proof (birth certificate) that he was not born in Jamaica. One more thing, he meet Bob Marley at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia in 1976.

@@henrigeorge9311 His family member put it in his obituary online, not me. Go to the 1950 census and look yourself. I have, that's proof enough for me. The grandfather came from Panama, that's in the US records. look it up. I lied where my folks was from. In the 50's 60, Black people used to lie where they were from. The 1950 census is free to look at. It wasn't around when he was alive. The family member, took us the link. Don't kill the messenger. He said he used to see Bob Marley when he was little in Jamaica, That put the doubt in me. You don't believe the US census? His father and mother were born here? They had no reason to lie on the census.

End of an era. His work orchestrated the soundtracks of my life. :( OMG...he went to my highschool. I never knew that. So did one of the members of Blue Magic. I wonder if they met there. I lived around the corner from the Uptown. So sad that he's gone. (I never heard anyone from Philly call him "Thom", but okay.

I love Thom Bell. My relationship with Thom lasted for over six decades and I was with Thom in his final days… My father was Tom’s attorney for over 50 years- I am close with his wife and family… I appreciate and love all that he contributed to music and I enjoy looking at all of the various reports stories videos and tributes to him… However this tribute has a narrator or an AI generated computer voice that pronounces his name wrong based on the spelling… As well as one of his children and the owner of sigma sound studios who was the engineer… How many mistakes are in this thing also this nonsense about creepy last words… Who is this company I went and looked them up and they basically do this creepy last word thing every time somebody dies… These people are horrible this is disrespectful to Thom and we will do what it takes to get this taken down… And also there is a video clip that was taken off of my RUclips website with my father and Thom sitting and talking I don’t recall giving permission to use my video
