Oh my gosh! This music is the best! Can anything today compete with this based on pure musicality and talent? I think not! Come on folks! Give me some support.
Joni Sledge was my long ago crush.....so glad to run across this gem, I never knew it existed. Kathy sang most of the leads with Sister Sledge, it was nice seeing Joni shine on stage like that. RIP to a beautiful, talented, lady.
gbrown4x4 yeah TODAY'S HIP HOP GANSTA RAP they continually steal old skool beats Like The Gap Band Stevie Wonder Parlianent LTD Spinners I give exception for Will Smith Jiggy with it off of He's the Greatest Dancer He and Sister Sledge are from Philadelphia PA.
I road managed a tour 'Legendary Ladies of Soul' featuring The Supremes, Three Degrees & Sister Sledge. We went across Europe on a massive tour bus for several months. Had a great time and I got to know all the ladies well. Great memories!!!
Agreed, at first I was like, "No Dionne? This isn't going to go well." Well, open mouth insert foot, Joni did a great job! Her voice is more softer and sensual, whereas Dionne's is more powerful. I still like the version with Dionne better, but this one is pretty darn good too! One thing is is for sure, the Spinners definitely had fun with this song regardless of who sang the lead.
Professionals. Everyone one them. Respect. Love. Missing the departed ones. Appreciating Henry Fambrough last original Spinner left. Missing Joni Sledge too.
i had always hoped Sister Sledge would reunite at some point (where are you Kathy?)...but, now that Joni has joined the ranks of so many great artists from the 70s and 80s who have left this life...well, this was just not to be...'Sister Sledge' had staying power, call it longevity...talented, smart and beautiful...and, they were spiritual...i admired them greatly over the decades...they remind me of my own three sisters...even though my sisters don't sing ... see you in Heaven, Joni!
GOOD DESCRIPTION!! im an 80s baby but I DUG ALL MY MOM'S MUSIC. And she held her OWN singing Dionne's part👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. Philippe ALWAYS KISS THE END OF ANY SONG HE'S ON
Cannot believe that even though this was a massive No1 Billboard Hot 100 hit the Spinners NEVER performed the song on TV together with Dionne Warwick until many years later when they appeared on her show in 1990.
I'll be 50 on September 12. I can remember riding in my parents car with no seatbelts or carseats listening to AM radio. 13Q in Pittsburgh...... Even at the age of 3 or 4 I can recall loving a lot of these songs from the early 70's. Some of the BEST music ever made! No lasers, no giant inflatable boobs, simply no BS..... Just great musicians with amazing talent..... Just listen to the back up band, the horns, and rhythm section, just crushing it!!! And NO autotune crap for the vocalists....... Where has the good music disappeared to???????
Great performance. One of the greatest miscalculations in group history was when Phil Wynne thought he had a solo career ahead of him. Charismatic entertainer, but he should have learned from the mistake of David Ruffin. As for Joni Sledge.....RIP......nice job here, if Dionne wasn't available for the show.
A 70s gem. Well crafred, written, produced and arranged. Right up there with my other 2 forgotten 70s overlooked masterpieces. Smoke from a distant fire by Sanford, Townsend Band and In the heart of the night by Poco. 70s had more talent in each category, Pop,rock,R&B, disco ( yes, there is a difference) jazz and country. Most of the mainstream top shelf artists did their best work in the 70s, never to come close again. The one hit wonders of the 70s were 1,000 x better then the crap of today in every aspect!
During World War II there were many artists dabbling in covers of others material, and for the most part the original version of course is the preferred recording, but in this case Joni made this performance seamless, and as good as the original. It has been nice to revisit this dusty disc. Midnight Special was always the paramount of contemporary entertainment of that time, and I enjoy the shows more now.
Thank you so much for posting this version. I saw the Spinners on tour in the UK with Sister Sledge, ben E King and The Jimmy Castor Bunch and this version brings it all back. Cheers, Paul, Southampton, England
hilarious haha! just noticed at 2:20 when Bobby and Joni start bumping and grinding heavy with their dancing o.0, a few seconds later there's a camera shot from behind and in the back row you can see Billy moves over to dance next to Pervis who quickly shoves him away lol
Hi everybody. Please vote for the Spinners DAILY starting NOW through FRIDAY, APRIL 28TH so that they get inducted into this year's 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Joni really did justice to this song! Dionne Warwick no joke, for a 19 year old to tackle this with a stage full of men her fathers age is impressive.
Aww never saw this before. RIP Joni Sledge and four of the Spinners.
Six years later they all gone now!! RIP
Philippe always take you church at the end of a song
Yes, that was Mr. Soul Stirrer. A great vocalist.
Another great Detroit band. Joni Sledge was only 19 when she did this show with the Spinners.
Dhit62 i was 2. but she reminds me of my childhood.. so sad she passed😢
Sadly :(
Rt
She probably had a huge crush on Bobby because he was much older but he was FINE
Sister Sledge are from Philadelphia
Such a beauty. Heartbreaking loss. RIP, Joni.
ol Philippe Wynn finished the song with authority
Bobby sang like a dream.
Oh my gosh! This music is the best! Can anything today compete with this based on pure musicality and talent? I think not! Come on folks! Give me some support.

THIS IS THE STUFF !!!!!!! I wish this hip hop/rap stuff would just HOP totally out of existence !!!!! LOL
gbrown4x4 yeah TODAY'S HIP HOP GANSTA RAP they continually steal old skool beats Like The Gap Band Stevie Wonder Parlianent LTD Spinners I give exception for Will Smith Jiggy with it off of He's the Greatest Dancer He and Sister Sledge are from Philadelphia PA.
Joni Sledge killed it!!!!!!
I road managed a tour 'Legendary Ladies of Soul' featuring The Supremes, Three Degrees & Sister Sledge. We went across Europe on a massive tour bus for several months. Had a great time and I got to know all the ladies well. Great memories!!!
RIP Joni, tears on my face. My thoughts are with your sisters. Such a great loss, such a sudden gap.
Like Jonis smooth voice. Very relaxing. Go Joni. Rip ❤️
Knocked it out of the park. Love the guy at the end taking over.

Really impressive. Gotta love the Spinners and Joni is so perfect with them. Wow. Thanks for sharing!!
Professionals. Everyone one them. Respect. Love. Missing the departed ones. Appreciating Henry Fambrough last original Spinner left. Missing Joni Sledge too.

RIP Miss Joni Sledge I loved your music🙏🏾🙏🏾

Kathy does lots of stuff she was on pass the mic with DJ Cassidy a couple of months ago you can see it on RUclips
I love this brother so much!! He is a true singer!!!
Joni did great here her and Kathy have similar tones to me. Joni's is just alot smoother and velvety while Kathy's was raspy and gritty
GOOD DESCRIPTION!! im an 80s baby but I DUG ALL MY MOM'S MUSIC. And she held her OWN singing Dionne's part👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. Philippe ALWAYS KISS THE END OF ANY SONG HE'S ON
@@N.a.j.i. Yes she did and my condolences to you for your lost. Joni was such a light and you can tell it
All the sisters have great voices kathys is the best just love her raspy voice !
Billy was really grooving in the back!
Yes, I must agree.. this song brings back fond memories of days gone by...
Cannot believe that even though this was a massive No1 Billboard Hot 100 hit the Spinners NEVER performed the song on TV together with Dionne Warwick until many years later when they appeared on her show in 1990.
It was ten years later in 1985 on "Solid Gold".
Only 19 and Joni owned the stage with her immense presence! I like her much better than Dionne's version. And Pillippe's outro! Wow.
This version isn't bad but I like Warwick version better in my opinion
Burt Sugarman's Midnight Special is a national treasure.
Unbelievable!!! FANTASTIC!! So glad she had this opportunity!!
I luv Joni's beautiful 70s baby blue outfit... She was pretty too :)
Joni sounds great here!
timeless, smooth soul music
Do it Joni! Philippe Winn was a burst of talent that the industry shunned. He could deliver so masterfully and in your face grand. Great performance!
Looking at some of these videos whose toes did Philippe step on..shunned or black balled no way he did not get offers of record deals.
thank you joni for the good tunes , rip

funny, when the couple start doing the bump, the two guys in the
back start and one gets pushed away. Good music.
They always acted silly on stage

Dionne's voice is legendary but her problem was she knew it and made a point that everyone should know it.
bladesaint21 ...damn loll!!!
🥺This is so gone, RIP😔

SO MUCH BEUTY JONI AND TALENT/HARD TO BELIEVE ALL THOSE TALENTED FOLKS ARE ALL GONE R.I.P.
@andrewfrancis74 I agree. Kathy is great but the other sisters can definitely hold their own. Debbie Sledge is also an incredible lead singer.
Thank you so much for posting this version. I saw the Spinners on tour in the UK with Sister Sledge, ben E King and The Jimmy Castor Bunch and this version brings it all back. Cheers, Paul, Southampton, England
joni😢
Some much Soul
Listening in 2020...I never realized how talented Joni Sledge was. She could've had a successful solo career.
RIP JONI

RIP, Thom Bell. A musical genius!

The push from the two back up singers. No hip bumbing with me. 😅 I loved 70's hip bumbing.
I luv her 70s jumpsuit with matching Bolero style jacket... In my favorite color too, a striking silver blue :):):)
@charlie8575 I couldn't agree with you more!! I really love this performance of the song. Joni does add that something special to this set!
