My First Drive of A Genesis - Can The G70 Shooting Brake Stand Out From Its Korean Siblings?

- Today, my first ever drive of a Genesis. Spun off from parent company Hyundai, Genesis have recently entered the UK marketplace and are hoping to offer another "premium alternative" for customers of traditional brands such as Mercedes and BMW, but also more off-beat choices such as Polestar and DS. Can it succeed?

It has to be said that the G70 is currently the oldest model in Genesis' lineup. In fact, it was one of their first models and at the time it was first introduced, they were still experimenting and testing the water. The latest G80, G90, GV70 and GV80 are huge improvements and their build quality has even impressed guys from Autogefühl, and they are strict Germans.
If you would, you could consider the Hyundai Genesis Coupe as the previous generations of the G70
I stopped watching Autogefühl I think three years ago after Thomas (it was Autogefühl check marked account) personally attacked me and other commenters with his Vegan rant. I just wanted them to review cars instead of forcing their vegan religion onto others who disagree with them. I also unsubscribed from their channel and never went back.
@@plugsocket9432 100% on your side.
I went on their website and had a look at the G80. Specced it up to over £60k. Maybe it's comfy, but a none too rapid, thirsty , high CO2 4 pot. Think I'd rather stick with a B58 engine instead.
@@plugsocket9432 me too, long live T-bones
My first Genesis exposure was the post-Peter Gabriel times, though, so I can't say much about Genesis outside _We Can't Dance_ , _Invisible Touch_ and _Genesis_ .
great, a genesis dad joke
Home by the sea
Invisible Touch is such an underrated album.
Phil Collins with Genesis or without is one of the greatest artists ever.

This is just reminding me again that I really wish they made a manual Stinger. Those E39 M5 vibes, manual super saloon (/hatch)
Enjoyed the video as usual. I own a 2020 G70 3.3T Sport AWD and I can confirm it is a superb vehicle. The new front with the pointy grill isn't entirely to my liking either. The older model looked far more aggressive.. The 3.3 twin turbo completely transforms the car. Performance wise, it's just a hair under a BMW M340i with a (subjective) nicer interior. It was also created by Albert Biermann, the ages long head of BMW's M division. Many journalists have commented on it's handling and driving characteristics being similar to old great BMW's as well. As for the servicing it's great. You get preferential spots & servicing at the local service centre should you take it in yourself. If not, they will send a driver to your location with another Genesis (not a Hyundai) and take yours in for servicing. When complete be it a day or a few depending on what's being done, they will come and collect it no matter where you are. Home pub... pub, work etc. Included in that is the first 4 years of servicing free. So with all the picking it up and dropping it off and the yearly services you pay not a penny. Also at car meets it gets a lot of attention as a BMW and Mercedes competitor. It really is that good. For another video go to Everyday Driver "G70 vs Giulia vs 3 Series" and check that out. Cheers!
First time for me hearing on genesis.
Jay, the fact you've reviewed it and gave it the 👍, along with your increasing and well deserved popularity and credibity, should give the car a wee boost 👌
Always great to see another video 😄
Yes I've been waiting for this a long time 😍
Absolutely brilliant review. Touched all the points in a sensible manner, with both enthusiast and realistic mindset.
When I lived in the US I was very curious about the G70, and wondered what the impressions of such an American Market car would be in Europe. Well done, sir
Get a room!
Hi Jay you are so right about Genesis and the Peter Gabriel years with the exception of the albums “A Trick of the Tail “ and “Wind and Wuthering” Your channel is one of my three favourite car channels along with “Furious Driving” and “Hubnut” Thank you. 🚘🚘🏎🏎
All Hyundais, all Kia’s all Genesis, this company has an absolute talent for fitting the wrong engines into their cars. Even down to the little Picanto.
I remember when people wanted the V8 on the Genesis Coupe and Hyundai refused to do it and now they have 3.5TT but refuse to put it in the Stinger.
In the USA, the entire Genesis Line represents Great Value, especially the G80.
I never thought 18" wheels would be described as small. A question for you; when you mention fuel economy on your reviews, do you just rely on what the dashboard tells you? Or brim the tank?
I remember the days when 17s were big !
Me neither!

I like Genesis but this one is an oddball. Pity as most shooting brake versions of sedans usually look good.
Hope they bring on the Genesis X concept.
Been waiting for this one
Can't shake the "new Infiniti"-feeling off just yet. But who knows? Kia and Hyundai have achieved remarkable things in recent years with very inspiring models, so maybe it could just turn out very differently for Genesis. Even though SUV, I think the GV70 is currently their most attractive looking model.
It would be interesting to see how traffic increases on autotrader after jayemm releases a video. I find it virtually impossible to not go and have a quick look around any time he releases a video
Went past one on m25/m40 on way to Birmingham. Wondered wtf it was. Looked really cool however. Especially in blue.
I had a very well specified Skoda Superb a few years back. This reminds me of that. Skoda never rattled mind you.!
the MB cla45 amg shooting break IS (because they still make it) the real competitor to this, which I would still choose, even a second hand one anytime instead of this.
that is a good point, do they do a CLA 35 amg version of the shooting brake?
Great video bro very faiir review
I have zero Doubts that i'd want to own a Genesis in the future
you could get a used 2016 model off autotrader?
How can that look so good? Just......wowie 😳
I live in the US and have had a G70 (sedan obviously) 3.3t rwd, for 3 years. It replaced a BMW 128i coupe manual that I adored. The G70 is decent and I chose it over a Mercedes C43 because it was more exciting to drive and way cheaper. The interior is gorgeous (I have the same as in your video). It’s a really decent car, especially at the price ($50k in the USA) but I miss a manual gearbox
I've been driving the 2.0t for a week and while I like the car I find the transmission isn't smooth.
@@j.a.g.8689 While I believe the ZF is a better transmission, I must say that I have no real complains with mine for daily driving, whether it is in Sport (no Sport + mode for my 2019). I wonder if the programming is different for the 2.0t and the 3.3t?
Also have a G70 in the US, but I have the 2.0T Sport MT. Bought it new for $31k in 2020, wonderful car, but dealer service has been spotty (concierge valet driver blew out my transmission - replaced under goodwill).
@@ACabral711 I was very frustrated with the dealer but something changed over the last few months and they have been great. The price you paid for yours is a steal!
@@cvandenhaute I switched dealers over valet service issues and an argument over the car needing coolant. Love the car, probably won't sell it. I don't love the terrible fuel economy, but I can't complain, every 2.0T AT loaner I get struggles to get 20 MPG and I average 23-25 with the 6MT.
Incredible design!
I’ve still only 1 Genesis in the wild on the roads since they arrived in 2016
So much working room under the hood I love it.
It has some styling elements of said aston (not gonna argue if thats good or bad) with volvo inspired headlights. Im not quite convinced about that yet ...
Love the interior tbh, very surprised but this motor overall, well done Genesis 🫡
I really like the look of the big GV80. Are there even any in the UK for you to try?
I saw saloon version on the road last week. Looked good.
Nice review James. Personally, I think Genesis are great, the stylish I don't find offensive, feels good quality inside, drives nice, reliable, as practical as a Mondeo Wagon but with Lexus reliability and useability. Great customer service it has to be said. They seem to value their customers and their experiences, it's a delight to interact with them. A rare experience. Good on South Korean manufacturer. Worthy family car.
As practical as a Mondeo estate? The Ford has double the boot space! Korean reliability is not good either, the Theta engine especially.
You'd have to get a G90 to match the interior and boot capacity of a Mondeo. These cars (along with all the premium segment) are tiny. And Lexus reliability has not been something special for so long. Taxi drivers all around Europe have been switching from the previously unbeatable 2nd gen Prius to Skodas, Seats and Dacias. All recent Toyota products have been averagely reliable at a higher than average cost. All the Prius derived Lexus hybrids have had enough issues to constantly put a dent on their market share.
I’m sure all 25 people will enjoy this car, as nice as it is. PPL will choose German over all else, even at a higher price.
If that was the case then Dacia would be out of business.
@@purple-porker Dacia is a super budget brand, Genesis is looking to poach buyers from Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz...
@@purple-porker What does Dacia have to do with being premium?
@@purple-porker You don't need to say the first thing that comes into your head out loud.
@@CarsofGlasgow I don't know. I'm not sure what I meant.
To be fair, the Genesis brand is only active since 2015 and they have 4 models to their credit. For the Hyundai group that is usually know to make plain old reliable a-to-b cars without many frills, this is quite a big jump but it looks like they landed pretty gracefully. Give them a few more years and they will turn the segment inside out like they did with the citycar and small car segment
The Genesis GV60 is pretty sleek
I was reading Auto Express and Hyundai beat VW in several segments. Perhaps the Germans should take note after all...
They actually have 5 models as well as 3 full EV models. I love Genesis!!
@@CarsofGlasgow i disagree. The GV60 is very ugly, IMO.
Right now they have expanded to 6 models
3 sedans and 3 SUV’s
Thanks James for a great review! The rear 3/4 view is best IMO, taking in the tailgate side profile. The front grill looks metal, as opposed to shiny metal coloured plastic that even premium European brands are using extensively in their quest for weight reduction. Genesis will likely add the 3.3L V6 to their G70 Sport model in 18mths - 2yrs time when they typically have a mid-cycle facelift.
Will people swallow the CO2 taxation? And pay at the pumps?
Finally an honest review of the Genesis
I love the Genesis design language!
Interesting point about the cabin - it’s certainly a nice feeling, high quality premium feeling interior but it’s already dated - because it is. It’s effectively 5 years old already, having made its debut back in 2017 and is still peppered with parts bin sharing here and there. Not necessarily a bad thing, but the facelifted interiors in the G80, GV70 and GV80 are wonderful.
I do hope Genesis succeeds - an alternative in the market is always welcome and it’s been showered with praise in North America, with some journalists claiming that they drive like BMWs of old. I just hope they can keep up with the demands of modern legislation.
I agree it looks old next to latest Mercedes etc
I absolutely love Genesis as a brand. There car's offer the luxury and beauty of the German competition, while being reliable and easy to maintain. That's why I own two!
Are you in America?
@@CarsofGlasgow Dubai
I suspect this will go the same way as Infiniti. OK its a bit of a leftfield choice , but so was Infiniti. The online only concept is an error to me. Lexus are succesful as a premium sub brand because of the whole dealer and service experience and that is all part of what you associate with the brands identity, especially at the premium end where the dealer experience is so important. Genisis's online only model is devoid of this. Hopefully I am wrong and this is the new way to do thinks, but I suspect not.
I hope it doesn't... From what I gather, genesis are working on electric power trains which will definately boost sales if they are decent, and using the same platform as the ionic 5 and EV6 is a great start...
Infiniti didn't have the forward plans engine wise.. I'm hoping genesis does
@@anthonydeas2173 Infiniti had fine engines, the only problem was a lack of a competitive diesel (they were using the same 3.0 Renault V6 you get in a Navara pickup), the styling was better than Genesis and they had superb dealers... and, even with the F1 sponsorship and the Vettel edition QX70, they still sold in tiny numbers.
@@richardharrold9736 I'd love a v6 coupe, or a qx30, but for some reason they still fetch decent money considering they aren't UK based anymore... I really liked the F you ethos that they had, of massive v8 and v6 petrol engines when everything else was diesel.. If the tax wasn't so high in the UK, I'd have a infiniti coupe without thinking :)
They came to the UK in 2015 so I don't know if this is a second attempt or not. Remember they sold that big saloon for £50k with the 3.8l V6 back in the day
@@CarsofGlasgow the old Hyundai Genesis V6/V8 saloon never came here, it was LHD only made for the Korean and US markets.
The rear reminds me of the Renault Laguna 3 Break
Thanks J, too many established players in this segment,. Unless Genesis really undercut the others on price, I can't see them doing well, especially competing with their own cheaper brands, which will continue to bring better products onto the market.
About the beeping sound. I agree, and I'd also like to point out that the Bugatti Veyron made the same beeping sounds as a Golf.
I couldn’t agree more about confusing styling with style which is a shame because the overall package looks pretty good.
It’s still just a posh hyundai/ Kia.
I bought a new Hyundai a couple of years ago… it was fantastic for the first week of ownership followed by 9 mths of pain and arrgghhh! Hyundai customer service were hopeless and when they started to play up with the warranty claims (much to the dealerships dismay), I lost faith and pushed for a refund…. Pressure from The dealer and a local motoring magazine helped…. And a full refund was achieved. Turned out that I was 1 of many with the same issue on the same car model given the same run around.
I bought a VW with the refund…. Such a better night/ day experience
To be fair Rolls used to do that 'bling' sound like a 5-series...or even a 3 series. Same sound. Not sure if they still do...
Point taken though, one with which I agree.
I like how it's something new. The German brands are extremely bland to look at as they all look the same and lazy deisgns.
Though after 10 years I'll say the same about Genesis cause they seem determined to keep that design langauge the exact same across the lineup.
But when BMW tries new, different things with their designs such as the E60 5series, E65/E66 7series, and more recently the new iX 4Series, M3, M4 and i7/7series (all of which are brilliant) , you don't like it and say there was nothing wrong with the old designs. So please make your mind up (not referring to you specifically)
@@N1ckZ I never said such words. Your literally lying lmao.
I say dang, yall were so boring before and when yall try something new yall fail. I don't say the old deisgns are better. I say all of it needs a overhaul. Would appreciate you never shove words in my mouth to fit your argument. And you shouldn't do that with anyone before you know where they personally stand. It really weakends your argument my guy.
You may say not speaking to you specifically but it really seems like it so u feel the need to respond in such a manner.
nope
@@baronvonjo1929 also, as if this thing isn't bland and lazy? Come on.
@@richardharrold9736 I say that cause a BMW now looks like a BMW from 20 years ago. Now maybe 15-10 years. Same for Mercedes and Audi amd VW. Sure they might have changed a bit but they have lost all passion for creating good new deisgns. Genesis is just more fresh to look at. I have seen so much effort in the small details to the brand like rims, metal finishes etc. And a variety of colors certainly help.
Nearly every German car is a depressing monotone white, black, grey. (Though this specific G70 ruins my case for that)
Either way the German cars just blend into everything and lack any soul for me. The Genesis has presences when around other cars that the Germans never had for me. Just personal preference.
Though I would never buy this. Genesis ranked very poorly in reliability tests along with the Germans, you would thing after decades of building cars these companies would make something that could last 30 years smh.
I assume more Saville Row as opposed to a certain Jimmy.....🤔🤣
Now then! Now then!
This looks quite interesting, hopefully they make a manual saloon or coupé too! 🤔😯😀🤘 .
Interesting. I have noted a tendency for Korean cars to follow a more 'American' esthetic in general, and (being an American) I have to say I quite like the looks of it. I'm not fond of calling a slightly stretched hatchback a shooting brake (or station wagon) but that's what were stuck with these days. Overall I'm intrigued, but it's really not my sort of car. One thing I would wager; I bet it's mechanicals won't go completely to crap after 100,000 miles like both of our Audis did.
I had a Genesis G80 and absolutely loved it however, 'shooting brake' style vehicle (irrespective of brand) do nothing for me. They look like a sedan with a roof tacked on to the rear.
The beep of the tailgate is the same as our old ‘15 Santa Fe 🤔😅
The side on profile looks like the old IS200 estate
why didn't they do this with the Stinger?? I said at the time it was such a simple solution to the badge and it already existed!
At £50.000 it’s got no chance I wouldn’t take a risk on this will be worth £20.000 in two years time
I think it looks amazing… surprised how many people dislike it
I think it looks quite good from the side, like a sports back. They should ditch the fake vents and I can’t help it, but I’m not a fan of the current trend to massive front grills… and that badge is awful, did they design it in clip art? Interior looks good though, a brand to watch I think.
Jay , reaching out to you with a request to try a Genesis GV80 , also some of the design parts in all of their line up especially the GV80 is Bentley derived,, because it's a Bentley designer working on those Genesis, cheers!
Will you be posting a video about the Sorento ? My father has the 1.6phev on top spec and I’d be keen to hear your opinion .

Good to see another interesting car review. Why don't manufacturers fit heating in cars any more? Or if modern cars have heating why have heated seats/steering wheel? If one is cold, why not turn the heating up?? I can understand it if we all lived in Siberia, but Surrey? I dont see any point to this car, and its endless list of settings to tweek everything just in case. Best to put energy into a decent Hyundai and win people over by hard work on basically a good car.
Do you thing this is going to hit the big time? Sledgehammer the competition?
Would like to see a GV60 reviewed thanks.
The 5 year servicing package is attractive and they collect it.
Looked sty GV60 at the FoS this year and aside from the highly impractical white interior it was very good - very high quality. But as is the case with seemingly all new cars at the moment, they are all priced upward of £40k and are unaffordable as a result without a huge chunk of money
Oh I sat in the neon yellow with the blue interior on Electric avenue (that one was £60k)
This channel has to do video on Peugeot 406 coupe!
In theory you should be able to put the i30N map on it, given its the same engine. So 270bhp would give it a little extra kick.
Still waiting on you to review the BMW F13 6 series coupe/convertible.😊
Europe has (well, had) the Optima Wagon, and now this. I'm jelly.
Nobody really bought Optima's in the UK weirdly
Definitely try the G80 or the GV80!
Outside Britain the word 'Savile' probably evokes the exclusivity of the world class bespoke tailoring of Savile Row. As opposed to here, where it's a reminder of the BBC's "tendencies".
Ferrari's from the same period as my Alfa 159 had the same beep when locking/unlocking the car. I found it quite cool, but then I had the Alfa and not the Ferrari!
Nice car
That's a brave comment to make about genisus lol 😆. Peter Gabriel years were better in my opinion too though
I really want to like this car, and the side profile has something of the old Lexus IS300 SportCross, which I loved. But without the V6, and with that horrendous nose, I just can't, which is a shame, as it's priced at a point where I could just about consider one.
What I really want to see is a Stinger Estate!
Sad to see the engine is so mid. For me the design is breath of fresh air. The physical controls are plus. The sunroof rattle would drive me mad. 😡🤪😢 Nice video. Keep up the good work.
I have a g80 and yeah the sunroof pisses me off. Besides that it’s the best car ever
As an Idea, I think it could be well compared to the VW Arteon Shootingbrake. In terms of size, engine power etc. it should fit.
Close but no cigar with this one. It seems an odd set of engines to offer given there are more powerful petrol fours in the Hyundai stable. I suspect it won't be too long before an electric version is offered but BMW sell a large % of 3 series as PHEV which Hyundai have the technology to offer and would suit this car well. Otherwise it looks good and is perfectly premium enough - I really did struggle to see too much in the way of buttons I recognise from my Ioniq.
The rear looks like an after thought. They'll be better to put the Stinger rear end on it.
Wait, what brands have left the UK/Europe as of late?
It must be Genesis day today. Doug has dropped a Genesis video too.
that GV60 had a very modern looking interior by comparison
It reminds me of Lexus IS200/300 SportCross from 2002-2005.
27.8 MPG? Literally 0.5MPG less than I averaged in a 2003 Cl500 on its last drive out. I know maybe it still needs running in, but wtf?
My Father was getting 27MPG out of his 2018 Audi RS3 with 400PS.
@@plugsocket9432 that's decent, I really don't get the point of some of these modern eco biased engines. In the real world they're not much better than an older engine that's had more spent in its design. A lot of the older BMW, merc and I guess VAG engines will get decent fuel economy and still have the performance to wipe the floor with the new asthmatic forced induction stuff. 28+mpg isn't even difficult to achieve, I've done better and the car only has 5 gears, it doesn't even use 1st gear to pull away unless it's in sport mode. Can't stand these 9+ speed boxes constantly faffing around, give me 5 speed + a flexible engine any day
The logo looks like something from GTA? Jesus Jay ... that's got me baffled, no idea what you're seeing there mate
I'd buy one.
Shame that they are bringing a "premium" model.... With a decent interior and they start with a 2.2 diesel...!! They should have started with a petrol or an EV. In the current market I wouldn't touch any new diesel from any manufacturer.
Interesting car. Strange that they don't actually have a dealer network. I think that is something that they should consider. It will never really compete properly or be considered a contender until the public can go and see them touch them and drive them properly even though they will bring one to your door, and in three years time when people trade them in I suspect they will be viewed and priced like an upmarket Hyundai or Kia and will be priced accordingly. It will be interesting to see if the manufacturer will take them back in part exchange because if they don't then values will fall and in the UK at least I think the brand will fail. Time will tell. To be honest 50k buys you a lot of cars these days and I would prefer to buy a really nice second hand piece of prestige than gamble my money on something so anonymous as the Genesis.
maybe they are trying to be Tesla?
It might not be german, but I feel that the right car to compare it to is the Kia Proceed GT. In my eyes at least, it is supposed to be the more luxurious version of it. As far as I can see, there are definitely some improvements in the interior and the engine is bigger, of course. But the Kia looks a lot better from the outside. I'm curious to find out, if the handling and the overall feel while driving are comparable.
Putting that turbo 6 in here would be such a slam dunk. Maybe they're saving for next model year (fingers crossed)
Na, I just don't think they can get the numbers to work
@@JayEmmOnCars there is proof of that: I think the sales figures fo the excellent Stinger 3.3t are not very good in the UK, am I wrong? Here in the US, it is doable but even with our low cost of gas, with the current prices, the abysmal mileage of the 3.3t hurts (22mpg US in average, not great)
it looks like a modern day version of the station wagon from national lampoons vacation.
In the United States I G 90 Or a G 80 can come with a 5 L V8 rear wheel drive or all wheel drive
that is handy when gas is half the price it is in the UK :D
When they add the V6, it will become a very interesting car.
Refreshing to see a challenger brand bringing a “wagon” to the consumer line up.

Have we hit "peak wheel" yet?
Another cool wagon we ( US) don’t get...sigh
I have helped a few folks narrow down their car choices and then sometimes just show them wagon versions of the car their looking at.
They all hate it. Everybody finds wagons ugly. I don't get it. But bringing one to NA would be like trying to get car enthusiasts to buy a Prius or Juke. You can't convince people to buy a car they hate
you get many more exciting cars in the US (& often much cheaper to buy) in the US. Everything from Blackwings to any American made vehicle.
Yeah, but have they textured the dash so it reflects onto the screen in sunlight? I’d sure miss that irritating feature. NOT.
I can see this selling well in Indonesia.
Not available in Northern Ireland, no 4wd and a decent v6, depreciation of a lead balloon.....£50k buys you a v60 polestar engineered t8 which is available in northern ireland, goes well and is worth more than 50p in 5 years time
