This vehicle isn't just for racing...or mudding...or trailing...
It's for everything. Keeping in mind the goal here is to grab the environment by the neck and beat the crap out of it, the renowned capability of the Jeep Cherokee has been coupled with the legendary power of the 2JZ-GTE to create what will ultimately be the greatest lightweight, versatile, armored, agile, and tough street/trail vehicle ever built. If you can can catch it on the street, you won't be able to keep up off-road. If you can keep up off-road, you won't be able to catch it on the street. Bring on the apocalypse.
#JEEPRA
Details:
2JZ-GTE powered Jeep Cherokee. Fully built automatic transmission is a hybrid A340e/AW4 that plugs into the Jeep NP231 transfer case and utilizes the OEM mounting points and cross members, making this Jeep completely "JEEP" from the transfer case back. Single turbo is small and from an EVO8 (for quicker spool) with custom exhaust manifold (bends donated by VINCE@ www.ctdfab.com/ THANKS VINCE!). Currently the exhaust is not built and just has an open down pipe. There is much work to be done...such as tidying all the wiring, building an actual shifter, installing the paddle shifters for manual control of the auto trans, and getting the climate control systems modified and reinstalled. A set of TT Supra rims with 1" spacers will be going on, tires still unknown, but will be all terrain, yet streetable. A 3" lift and custom integrated and modular armor is in the design phase now, along with transmission temp gauge and paddle shifters. Still breaking her in, but we will have boost and dyno numbers soon.
Thanks for watching.

DUDE DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE WANT THIS ENGINE IN THIRE N/A SUPRA OR S13 AND U HAVE IT IN YOUR JEEP LUCKY MAN
Thanks, but luck had nothing to do with it. :)
Yea hard work
Aristo 2jz?
Originally Aristo but I made it mostly 1996 US OBDII Supra by switching everything but the cams.
where did you buy it from? im planning to buy a 2jzgte as well for manual getrag trans will cost like 5k-10k? or am i too low.
Jeepra!!!
Id honestly be unbelievably confused if I saw a jeep drive by me making that sound hahaha
Nice work!
I have just recently fallen in love with turbo diesel power. Next project will use it. Ha.
I get most people prefer a manual for a couple reasons...maybe they don't understand how an auto works and they are the type to kill what they don't understand. Maybe they can appreciate an auto, but simply enjoy the "connectedness" with the wheels that only a manual gearbox can give...my wife won't buy or drive anything but a manual, I get it. The thing is, personal preference and opinion aside, a manual gearbox simply cannot out perform a properly built and tuned auto. A manual transmission will never shift as hard, as fast, and with perfect consistency as can be achieved with an auto. Period. I could give you a million examples. Many of the fastest cars in the world run a powerglide for this reason. If you want to walk around and sound like you have big balls because you only drive manuals, well that's fine. Put your thumbs where you like. The rest of us know that if you are serious about racing and really want to win, you run a built and tuned auto.
"The rest of us know that if you are serious about racing and really want to win, you run a built and tuned auto."
You do know you sound just as bad as the manual elitists, right?
To you, perhaps. We see what we want to see.
well, this is a jeep.. let's see how much further a manual will get you in the snow/ice.. or even on a trail.. I guarantee your auto will send you sliding into a ditch before the manual does.
You sound like a jackass talking about power glide, how many gears and actual shifts does a power glide use? Its not the same, and only sissy ass muscle car owners who cant shift use autos, that poor 2jz u use, u drive like a domestic enthusiast but use japanes engineering. Sad. We have japanese maunual equipped vehicles, including hondas breaking into the 7 second clubs with 5 speed manuals. Dont act like autos are the shit, they suck, just waite till it blows under the strain from the power
+Chad Kassem Most people I know who prefer manual (like myself) do so because they find it is more fun to drive. Plain and simple. And most of those I know who prefer automatic just don't care for the manual, don't like to change gears or are generally uncomfortable with a manual. As you say, it is a question of preference.
As for racing, it entirely depends on the type of racing and the car. In some instances (like drag racing, pulling, mud racing etc.), the automatic is better but in other cases (like track racing, rally, drifting etc.), it is not.
As far as manual control of Trans, I found out in one of my cars, if the D signal is lost it will stay in whatever gear it is in until that signal goes out. Found out by putting in between Neutral and drive where it was not making electrical contact with ether point. I plan to put a switch on this near my dead pedal to use when powering in and out of corners. (yea it's auto but daily driver gets Boring some times)
I also had plans to tap all the shift solenoids and activate them with a micro co
You sir ARE A MAN! I can say you did exactly what I would do given the resources right now. I was just thinking last night what if someone were to put a 2JZ into a cherokee?? AWESOME!!
If only this was a Wagoneer, it would be completely immaculate. Fake wood, gives me a woody.
this has to be the single coolest thing anyone has ever done. a hat tip to you sir!
I have a 97 5-speed and drew up a proper custom turbo system for the jeep 4.0 including lots of supporting mods...standalone fuel and ignition, built long block and trans, cooling system, turbo and air to water intercooler system with custom intake and exhaust, setup and tuning. Something no one else has done, totalling around $10k and putting out a comfortable 400 hp in mild tune. About what it would cost to get a turnkey LS2 system swap, he he.
I "liked" it when you cranked it.. but I wanted to "like" it again when you popped the hood and drove it!!!!!... That is bad assss son!
Thank you! I don't know the mileage just yet...wrapping up the emmissions systems installation so she will be legal in TX. 1987-88(89?) Cherokee Wagoneers.
Mostly for the reason that the 2JZ-GTE was built for boost from the factory. You can get a manifold and likely more components to turbo a Jeep 4.0 from Bryson at boostwerks, but those setups don't typically run more than 6 pounds of boost. My 2J will make 700hp without needing to be built...a 4.0 will not.
This is dope!. I’d do an all white with a roll pan and some type of aftermarket front bumper. Red interior. Lowered on 19s . Pillar gauges. Sound system., big turbo .
This is awesome. Loving it. Good job on the fabrication by the way.
Not too familiar with the gas versions of those trucks. For the most part, they are the straight 6, perhaps the same block as the second gen supras.. Im in Canada, and unlike the USA, our emissions laws allowed the 4cyl diesel found in the old BJ42's both 'jeep' style wagon and pickups. ie an FJ model with a diesel. If you are into rock crawling, the low 4 on a diesel lets you walk over monster obstacles.. No need to play with the gas pedal, let the clutch out and idle :D My favorite trucks .
I drive a manual, but my previous "toy" had a automatic rebuilt with shift kit and corvette servo, and I agree whole heatedly.
holy shit man u need an alignment, ur steering wheel is upside down but ur going straight rofl
@gsvillamar
Yes. That was mandatory. The A340e was modified with AW4 parts to allow the A340e to plug into the Jeep NP231 transfer case, exactly as the AW4 did.
that's why formula 1 uses automatic transmissions . nobody in the world can shift as fast as a built automatic .
I agree highly
You re wrong mate. F1 doesnt use automatic shifting. They have a sequential gearbox with manual up & downshifts
Hey man I'm planning on doing this swap on my 2001 jeep Cherokee I am extremely surprised to see one on RUclips
Once you get the steering on a dime, badass, even still.... badass
I'm impressed, very interesting
Man I’d personally opt for a smaller turbo in this application thing would be an absolute crawler
Well that's what I did when I built it initially. Mitsubishi Evo turbo. The current owner took that setup out and put in a more traditional ridic Supra single setup.
My 99 xj had an aw4 automatic and it was great other than low hwy gear no overdrive... offroad an automatic is great. and trust me I put it thru more than most people ever will got water in it three times lost fluid drove it with watered down tranny fluid and it still ran strong shit bombing 33s the whole time!
Straight out of Mad Max, love it
Wow...lol I forgot about this vid! Thanks for the reply man, I dig the 2jzJeep! Still got it?
well you will need some head work to make that much hp, but yes your stock bottom end should handle that. i just like the idea of turboing a 4.0 because of the instant torque that they make but i see your point.
You will also have to fabricate a new shifter setup, since the AW4 is cable shifted from the left side and the a340e is linkage shifted on the right. I plan on using a 98 Tacoma shifter and modding it.
alignment? wtf? for all you guys know, he might just have bolted the steering wheel on that way.
and as for you ckassem, i love it. best of both worlds! i have subbed and can't wait for another video!
lovely sound , as many work to do but is great
Yeah man, 4x4. That was a requirement. No problem fitting a random IC, and it uses the stock radiator.
It's going to be a wicked sleeper
Dude. Nice. Time to turn up the boost and throw a locker in the rear!
That was all fixed a while ago. Alignment was bad and the tires were screwed. Now all is right in the world. :)
Sweet build! I would love to take that xj for a ride! ...Now, about that shifter... ;)
Sweet build man!! You'll never see the tach get around there on the old 4.0L haha!
sounds sick dude
It's funny watching the Jeep tachometer go right through the red and shift after it's completely past it at 3:40. :)
it still sounds like a xj, thats cool.
Lovely turbo sound, more videos down the road? Would love to see this finished!
Gotta love the 2jz-gte
long horn state. wow I thought I seen it all great. job with the swap
the first 10,000 that enters my pocket, I'm so so doing this..like wtf. bad ass build man!!
Wow cool headers
@dfpdxxl
All stock internals, yes.
This is ridiculous and I love it....great job and original idea!
Ummm...ok. LOL. Seriously...all that on parts/materials. Projects like this take more time and less money when you do EVERYTHING yourself. Designed and built, not seen and bought. :) Thanks for the flattering remark!
I thought so too. I do like my straight sixes.
Old gold
Just add a duck call to your blowoff valve and leave the shifter like it is. Antitheft device and audible alarm ;-)
Very cool bro!
Yes.
post more videos!!!!
Because those who can, do...though it did start off as a joke...but then again that's exactly how Marc's "Streetfighter" z31 came to life as well. :)
@da7nesman
No sir! Austin, TX!
When anyone asks just tell them you moved the exhaust to the other side, then open the hood.
Great! Love 2jz swaps!! the cherokee is nice! do you have an idea of the costs for your project? :)
Hey, I've been researching how to do this exact swap with my XJ. I've been reading through your build forum and I have a couple questions about the hybrid trans. I think I understand most of everything, but would you be cool answering some questions? I know it's a 9 year old video but ya never know 😂
Fuck me…has it been nine years? Lol. Yeah man, ask away.
@@kassper82 yeah, time fucking flies 😂 so I saw you kept the a340 with the aw4 internals, what are the chances that you know if I could get away with swapping the bell housing on the aw4 from the a340?
@@dansxj dunno. I specifically kept the bell housing from the a340e because it was literally engineered to connect to the 2J. I just needed to change the output so instead of going to a drive shaft it bolted up to the transfer case.
Wiring harness was a factor as well. I just sacrificed some internal parts from the AW4 that I had to create the hybid a340e that went to the transfer case. I tried to consider “how would Toyota do this?”
Right and i agree, however I'm wondering if you can just bolt the 340 bellhousing to the aw4. From my understanding they're basically the same except for bellhousing, output, and various electronics. But if I can get away with just swapping the bellhousing....? If all fails, I can go full stand alone for engine and h&g trans controller. But if I can avoid some of that, it would be cool!
Awesome ride man
badass man!
Well done sir!
imagine taking this car in for an oil change as a prank lmaoooo
It's fun when the one mech sees it and knows, you've swapped and points it out to the others. Other than that you have to remember things like what filter/oil and amounts to tell them to use, while they're fawning over your engine asking questions and distracting you. Lordy if they mess something up.
KLZE swapped Probe, I'm doing a little research on a 2JZ for my Jeep, see what it takes.
I like it. Its innnovative. What kind of milage do you get? What year had the 4 headlamps?
Mother of God.
I am only tuning it to make between 400 and 450 AWHP...and I do not need head work to do that. :)
OMG been following you on NAXJA for so long can't believe you need to sell it :'(
That’s siiick! What’s the mileage like in it? Looking to build me something for a long trip I’m planning. South America to AK on trails. Need gas mileage and reliability
I had to sell the Jeepra. I would expect 18 or so miles to the gallon, and for sure that 2J is solid AF.
Good Idea, replace a stright six...with a straight six turbo!
If you dislike this Chuck Norris will piss in your gas tank and your car will explode. This is awesome.
one word Sleeper!!! its awsome yo!
I do love those old wagons! Isn't there a big brother to the 2JZ, in an NA form in those bad boys?
did you finish it if so can we have a vid of it done
Alright I'm wanting to do this with my 92 xj.....I got a few questions
1. Did you keep it 4x4
2. I want to keep 4x4 for off road and I live in pa so 2wd will not work in the winter so I don't know what 4x4 transmissions will work or if I can keep my stock one I would like to stay with a stick but I'm content with auto
3. Where did you get the motor
4. How hard was it to do the swap, motor mounts, tranny mount, getting the gages to work properly, exhaust ext....
Any help would greatly be appreciated thanks in advance!!!! It looks and runs great
Todd Perry Honestly coming from someone that owns a XJ. You should put a LS1 in it. I plan on doing that when my motor blows.
Crew Cuts sticking with a straight 6
+Todd Perry Reading through his forum post for the build should answer most if not all questions you have about it. www.jeepforum.com/forum/f22/2jzgte-swap-progress-1132407/index7.html
So far I'm around 4k USD deep. Thanks everyone!
Perhaps. If it makes you feel any better I am building the forced induction systems for a Top Diesel Cummins powered drag rail @ Hamilton Cams. :)
I didn't do it. I don't have 10 grand to blast. Besides, if I really wanted to swap in a straight six that was turbocharged out of the box, it would be 4-liter Barra out of the Australian Ford Falcon.
I added the build thread link to the video description.
There is at least one thing I'll do different on the next one. The thread is above but email me once you buy stuff and get serious.
apocalypse can GTFO! lol nice man.. nice :)
@awsom0
Yeah, working on that as we speak, lol.
Right now it is set at 5psi, but eventually up to 25-28 psi or 450 hp...whichever comes first.
That was pretty much parts. I've done all of the work, fab, electrical, and mechanical.
If I had a choice I would either swap a 2jz engine, or a corvette v8 in my '92 Cherokee.
Trey Johnson LS engine would save a couple hundred pounds and has pretty much every adapter imaginable to bolt it up. Even if you go the cheaper route of an LM7 5.3, all the LS hardware is still at your disposal. I've done a coupe TJs that had LM7s dropped in. More complicated than dropping in the Golen to replace my 4.0, obviously. Still, not bad considering the huge change.
winning
Wanting to do this to my 98 grand cherokee when the i6 shits on me dying to do my first 4 wheel peel
Roughly I've spent about $5-6k.
I go balls to the wall with my 4.0 with a full header back exhaust. no cat. It is loud too loud. I drive 45minutes on the highway with an atp header and a magnaflow muffler, it's so loud I want ear plugs
I strongly believe your going to need a new speedometer
That's sick........is the jeep still 4x4?
Turn-key? Labor included? Saweet. Have you seen Bryson on NAXJA? He has a good turbo manifold for the 4.0L for sale now.
Can you tell me more about the ECU side of the swap, like what wires are necessary just to get it to fire up. Excluding the A/C stuff and all of that. I would like to throw a 2jz in a samurai or a buggy. Thank ahead of time.
I bet you live in south florida? this looks like were my friend just moved to LOL!
absolutely fucking nuts. This makes me want to stuff a 2JZ into my '98 Cherokee.
Did you just use stock engine management parts? Was it difficult at all? What was the most challenging part of the build? I'm going to try for a 2JZ to a Chevy TH400 (since I found a manufactured adapter plate) and then the trans to a divorced transfer case so I can keep my 4WD (Some Utah Winters get a little gnarly both up in the mountains and the valley floors).
A bit sad that you sold it. :/
Researching and finally changing the internals of the transmissions was daunting but exciting. After that, it was like any engine swap. Making the motor mounts was a challenge. Getting the sensors to talk took some thought and additional solutions...I had to modify the speed sensor signal output so the ECU could use it to shift, and a resistor was needed to adjust the tach. I have to say I was particularly proud of the unique transmission setup and with how well the whole thing fits in the Jeep. It almost looks OEM.
So you made the 2JZ to talk with the Jeep accessories?
Since I'm swapping the whole drivetrain (as well as axles) as well as the other electronics (Jeep engine electronics as well as Jeep gauges). Think it would be a bit easier for me (referring to the electronic portion of things?)
What trans did you use?
Yes. Mostly. I hadn't finished the tach reading when I sold it.
I'm not kidding I get out of my jeep and have tinnitus
Mated right to the AW4? Trans guy told me the Jeep trans was a Toyota trans. Was always curious about the 2J from that point.
No, we took apart the Jeep’s AW4 and the 2J’s a340e, and swapped out the rear clutch pack, output shaft, and rear adapter so I had a a340e/AW4 hybrid that bolted right up to the transfer case. It’s my favorite part of the entire thing, and what makes the Jeepra so special. It’s 100% Jeep Cherokee from the transfer case on.
@@kassper82 I appreciate you responding. I just realized the age of the video. Great work.
Fix your tachometer, it reads 50% high xD
So this is a pretty bitchin concept you've got going on here! I wonder.... would it be possible to run a 5 or 6 speed manual gear box with an adapter plate and hook it to a NP231??? If possible, then just do turbo and fuel upgrades with ecu remapping and you could have a 400+hp 2jz do it all beast!!
insane but next time have someone help you with that camra lol .
First off, google wilbo666. This guy has done a fantastic job of documenting all the pinouts for the JZS147 ecu and harness. JZS147 is the Toyota Aristo. I personally used threads from Supraforums for half of the info I needed to convert everything from J-spec OBD-1 to US-Spec OBD-2. I utilize an ALLDATADIY account and the factory manuals (loaned to me by Christopher Johnson @ COBB) for everything else. I am still working on trimming in the emissions details, but she will be 49 legal soon.
