The Abyssal Crusade was an Imperial Crusade undertaken in 321.M37. The judgement of Saint Basillius found thirty Space Marine Chapters lacking faith. The guilty Chapters were given a choice between death or embarking upon a great crusade into the Eye of Terror. All would choose the latter.
The Crusade met with disaster, and each of the Chapters that took part in it had their tale ended in great misfortune.
The crusade's mysterious and disastrous fate was kept hidden from the greater Imperium, and the Administratum denied any link to it and the increase of Chaos Space Marine raids shortly afterwards. All that is known is that 800 years after the Crusade began, the remnants of some of the judged Chapters returned from the Warp with their purity and sanity intact. Infuriated and embittered by their ordeal, they cast their sights on the legacy of Saint Basillius, the long-deceased figure now worshiped as a god.

@@ScootSimp911 Yeah, but the average civilian doesn't even know that. They're just told worship Emperor and abhor non-believers. Using specific language or demonstrating any knowledge of " other gods " - would be out of the ordinary since the average civilian in the Imperium believes the Emperor is the one and only god of mankind and the universe.

I just find it funny that, of the five biggest examples of the Imperium fighting itself; the Badab war, Doge Vandire, the Months of Shame, the Abyssal Crusade, and the Siege of Vraks, only two of them were actually caused by chaos corruption. The rest were just the Imperium being a mess of incompetence and internal bickering.
The Anahame and its 8 shards would really be a good topic for an episode. The sword has a surprising amount of lore.

The first use of "vorpal blade" was as part of the poem "Jabberwocky".
The onomatopoeia “snicker snack” always made me think of electricity. So for me the Vorpal Blade always crackled like electric waves whenever swung

The Abyssal Crusade is a perfect example of how poor Imperial leadership was. All those losses, especially of the Space Marines, and all that could have been prevented if the Imperium used the one thing the Imperium seems to have in short supply, common sense, and just did not invade the Eye of Terror. Who actually could think invading basically hell was a good idea? The Imperium apparently.

Tbf I think they said that the guy who had the idea was actually a chaos worshipper.
It was just Marines being gaslit, as they easily are, into chasing glory
Taking the idea that it wasn't just a big chaos ploy to bolster their numbers... Wiping potentially corrupted space marines out in glorious combat? That's one win. And then there's the resources angle. The imperium can slowly but surely get new marines, even before primaris. But chaos? If they're not daemons or possessed then when they're gone they're GONE. 30 chapters isn't that much when you remember the Imperium is supposed to have 1,000 chapters on hand at any given time, not even mentioning those that aren't codex compliant. Wearing down the great enemy with a massive show of force while hopefully getting rid of potentially morale destroying and hazardous soldiers? Massive Dub.
Doom legion mentioned. 6/10ths went chaos, but 4/10ths remained loyal. One of the more interesting events during the abyssal crusade imo.

Hell, I've heard people gush about the wonders of the codexes in 3rd which were basically lore-lite pamphlets even compared to what you're getting these days in 10th

Intriguing that DK was so set on vorpal swords being red, given that (at least in 5th Ed anyway), D&D’s iconic Vorpal Sword is depicted as a red blade. Guess the people just know that it’s gotta be red.

19:46 my headcanon; they encountered him as a demon leading a congregation of followers who ended up as basic demons upon their death. While they considered the congregation itself as a "run-of-the-mill" demon horde, they found him and just went cold, ruthless, Salamander burning Eldar children Angry about it, and when they came out, went about that business of throwing his shit out.
Another idea could be they got taunted by a daemon about it, perhaps a arrogant tzeentch daemon taunted them about it
DK vastly underestimates how fucked up the Dark eldar are. They can make the marines like 1000 life times in an hour.

Well with the amount of muscle and meat that a space marine have they likely would survive for a few months or maybe a year if they properly ration it, since I think space marines can go without food for quite a long while.🤔🐱
