Biggest problem here is a lack of definition of ranking. Wandering from "they have a cool concept", "their books are great", "their primark is awesome", "they have the most worlds", etc etc. Pick one.
I think the problem with iron hands is that people judge them based on the early heresy novels. They’re very interesting. They basically had a huge schism after istvaan. The legion shattered and no one knew who should lead or what they should do. So they became war bands of various commanders and captains with their own goals, tactics, etc. Maduson was the closest to keeping them together, but was betrayed by the more “flesh is weak” faction of his brethren. In 40K era they have a great book called Wrath of Iron. In it their cold, machine rational sees them use humans, mechanicum, as simple tools to whittle down and destroy their foes. It’s very Enemy at the Gates Soviet tactics. But it works out in the end. They’re also very scary and brutal, unlike Ultramarines, the Iron Hands conquer, and punish the population into obedience. It’s so brutal it sets an example for hundreds of worlds not to fuck up Anyways there’s my wall of text. Iron Hands deserve better.
on legions who would help the people during an exterminatus. That's what the book the emperor's gift is about its space wolfs defending people against the inquisition and the dark angels. Have they read it because they did not talk about the SW as the most likely to defend the people.
Could have put in some of the non first founding Chapters, the ones that deviate from their OG Chapter, like Grey Knights, Black Templars, Flesh Tearers, Legion of the Damned and Blood Ravens
Ultramarines is the poster boy for 40k, they get a lot of love but they are the baseplate now for Astartes, this why they would be mid. They are the mario of 40k, in nearly everything but lacks harsher definitions that the other chapters have. Salamanders are definitely god tier, aesthetically amazing, charcoal skin and glowing red eyes, such an unsettling appearance almost chaos like but their compassion for actual humanity is what makes them God tier. Nothing inspires more god like feelings than a squad of salamanders burning xeno scum down as they lead civilians to an extraction because if there is no humanity left then what are they truly fighting for in the end other than the emperor.
bro this is the most sallow take I've ever seen, just because the U.M don't have something over the top dose not mean they dose not mean engaging. especially when you start getting into their lore mainly 30k and newer 40k. it is because they don't have such rigged roles like the other that you can get such a range of different characters in there chapter. Also the fact these lads put the White Scars under the spaces wolves makes this dumb af xD.

I like the u.m but they are not my fav (i am I.W fanboi lol) it is just that simply put the reason you gave seem every surface level to me. simply because what you mentioned is surfaces level such as their looks and actions. which is fine as thats why most people get into stuff. Yet saying the u.m are basic yet the Salamanders are not is something i cant understand. like the Salamanders are pretty basic compered to a many other chapters because they have no room to grow. I didn't mean anything bad by saying they are the muddle of the pack. I meant it as a baseline for all the other chapters. The U.M seems to encompass some traits from all the chapters and is seen as the main driving force for the imperium (other than the guardsmen, may their squishy hordes serve the emperor.) I am drawn to the salamanders because of their compassion, in a universe filled with relentless hatred and brutality the ones that actually care about their people. U.M also holds a part of this trait in some of their chapter. I need to dive deeper into all chapters, if there is any vids or books that you recommend I'd happily watch them.
