A small thing I love about the ending is how the advisor, upon being wounded unexpectedly, briefly becomes akin to a pathetic creature, scurrying away like a wounded animal. A way of showing its true colors, as it were.
Makes sense tbh. The whole cosmic horror aspect of the combine fits well with how Lovecraft wrote things like how Cthulhu was wounded by a boat showing they aren't invincible.
I love it too. How this being that tries to present itself as this great overlord demanding of nothing but fear and respect scuttles off like startled vermin when something stands up to it. The advisor, for all of its authority and psychic strength, is nothing but a mere bully. Something deserving nothing but contempt and mockery, but here it is: taking away what you cherish. I think it makes the cliffhanger sting even more; as you're not just filled with shock and deep sadness, but unfathomable bitter rage aswell.
Benny 1668 It sounded like you were saying that they shouldn't make a Half Life 3 and that we should end it at episode 2. The end was still a bit of a cliffhanger
Eli telled his daughter, Alyx that he loved her and called her sweatheart and tell her not to look which makes me think about that Wheeljack telled MK that he loved her and called her sweatheart and tell her not to look and First Aid telled Simon that he loved him and called him a sweatheart and tell him not to look.
The reason he was able to maintain this rational outlook was because he knew he was going to die as soon as Alyx passed the message from the Gman. That's why Eli, immediately after hearing that message, told Gordon to destroy the Borealis. He knew he wouldn't be around to help them. Even as he picks up the pipe to strike the Advisor, he tells Gordon again to destroy the ship. In that moment, he knew this was the end of the line.
I know right. I mean Gordon does know how to speak right. I am still mad that he didn't do anything to try and save her father. Still, he was stuck to the wall but you can at least try to do something.
Gordon doesn't speak throughout the series, but I imagine at this point, he was so horrified by what had just happened that he literally COULDN'T say a word, and he blacked out shortly afterward.
The first time I played HL2, that ending hit me like a freight train. I remember just staring at the screen for half an hour in disbelief that Valve left us on a cliffhanger like that.

Just the way that reverb cuts out is so perfect. Instead of having her voice echoing through the room like it was in the rest of the scene and being placed in 3D space, all the audio effects cut out and suddenly the audio feels like it's in our heads, or being whispered in our ears as Alyx sobs "Don't leave me." Literally such a small and easy tweak, but even saying it makes a world of difference is an understatement.

10:02 Something interesting to note, regardless if its intentional or not, normally at the end of every HL2 entry, the Valve logo shows up here. However at the end of EP2, it eerily just shows the HL2 logo.
That part always struck me as creepy too. It's just a logo, but something about it just struck me as odd. I can't explain it. If I had to guess, it's probably a combination of the music, how solemn the logo looks, the fact it's the only thing on screen, and the fact that it represents the last Half Life game ever (not counting Alyx, but I'm not buying a fucking VR set just to play one game)

I really wish Half-Life 3, too. I love to see if Gordon Freeman had a voice actor to talk and some interaction dialogues with Alyx and other NPCs throughout the game's story, maybe with some multiple endings and a free-roam expansion like Halo Infinite and Breath of the Wild.
@@cri.682 Well yeah, I sometimes prefer that but when he's a silent protagonist, it makes him seem like an emotionless person with no words to speak and also has no arms during non-combat scenes, you can't even see his feet too. I wish Eli had left a mark on that Advisor with that pipe, so when we get Episode 3 after the heat death of the universe, we can run into an Advisor with a face bruise and know which one did it.
Maybe the one that broke into the base (this one) was the one we've been seeing this whole time- the guy giving Breen orders, the one who shoots himself out of the citadel in Ep 1 and whose face is seen all throughout it on the screens and who crashes in the Barn in Ep 2, as well as the one we see summoning more Combine soldiers in the Silo. He could be considered the Advisor waking up the rest of them and essentially the "leader" (although that is as cliche as it gets), so we finally run into him in a fight to save the universe, because who better to have as your nemesis than a fat psychic slug (with a possible mark on his face) wearing a stylish bodysuit and slender man arms with a tongue strong enough to tear through flesh and metal?

Valve said they don't want to become COD releasing a new game every year instead they want to take pride in their work so for hl3 a employee said they are creating an entire new engine (source 3) to make the game look stunning
Guys! It all makes sense! Gman "coordinated" Eli's death! It was obvious. Gman appeared on the screen which caused Alyx to relay those words into her father's ear. Eli of course knew it was Gman so he wanted to tell Gordon more about him. This enraged Gman so he "coordinated" Eli's death with the Advisor.
@ianscheurer5077 I think the G-man wanted to prevent Eli from dying, actually. Remember, he's a mission-critical resource. He also wanted to hire Alyx as a backup plan, particularly after Gordon was recovered by the Vortigaunts. So everything in HLA was basically him killing two birds with one stone.
The way Alyx shouted "Goddamit, let go of him!" was tough. She knew there wasn't really anything to be done, but she wasn't not gonna fight for her father. Made everything that came just next so hard.
G-Man will play in half life 2 episode 3 , this information went the main office through valve,And also Lamar will get another chance,by the borialis ,A new chapter starting, also Alex have 1 last chapter,Thats the information we all got until now so no more endings, because last part is coming and don't expect it to be good,
Itay Zargof Agreed. I know that someone, maybe Dog or Barney, might die. Cause if you think about it, if one of them die and the only thing the player can do is watch, then that will enrage the player.
Andy7jhg *Kleiner and Alyx are in the clear, Dog and Barney however, are not. If they forced you to do that, it would most definitely enrage the player.
Eli and Alyx saying "I love you" to each other as Eli prepares to die is probably the single most emotionally impactful story beat to any game I have ever seen. The selflessness of them both in Eli's final moment is phenomenally beautiful and moving. This is my favourite scene in any video game, ever.
Eli dies, game ends on a cliffhanger, I just beat it no more then an hour ago... But where's half life 3!?!! Come on valve we've been waiting long enough!
you beat the game no more than an hour ago (date and time of you writing that comment), but you have waited long enough? damn. guess the games ARE that good.
@Dynamic Distance It was needed, now we know what G-Man's plan was all along. I love when sequels (or prequels in this case, which is even more impressive) enrich the story and lore of the whole series, not just the entry. Alyx did exactly that. Now when you go back and play the old games, you'll understand this character better. It also set up HL3 in an awesome way.
NightFlame Games You're waiting for a team fortress 3? Whats the point in even making a third one? The second one is still alive and well, the community is still strong, the game is still getting updates, and most importantly, Valve is making a SHIT ton of money off of it. Why would they even make a third one? I see no point in it.
***** Team fortress 2 took 9 years to make. Look how good it ended up being? Dota 2 took 10 years to make. Look how good it ended up being? Half-life 2 took 6 years to make. Look how good it ended up being? Be patient. Valve takes time to make their games. If you have a problem with this, there are plenty of companies that release garbage triple a games with new installments every year. Other wise, just wait. Its not the end of the world.
***** They're building an entire new engine and wouldn't make the next game without it, to make sure it was sufficiently advanced and good enough... rather then using current technology they are waiting for a significant leap for the next game
***** Thanks for understanding. And while you were joking, I actually somewhat agree, waiting so long after such a big cliffhanger can be difficult, but, as Shigeru Miyamoto once said: "a delayed game is eventually good but a rushed game is forever bad" so... yeah...
Half-life 3 was not made or perhaps Half-life 3 is Half-life Alyx and 2020 is the year after Brave is releashed and You'll might say that we will get Half-life 2 Episode Three in 2008 and 2008 is the year Before Brave is releashed.
guys, valve tend to make their games when they can innovate, they are innovators. Half life 1 & 2 were really advanced when they came out. Valve just need to make the game completely mind blowing. Theyre working on the source 2 engine which will probably be the most advanced engine ever. So expect it when they have finished that.
I don't know if you fuckers predicted the future but we do have a half life game that is actually on Br and looks mind blowing and would also come out March 2020
Half-Life 2: Episode 3 "Scheduled for a Christmas 2007 release" (May 2019 and still no real news) I think it will eventually release because why would they say they're moving away from the episodic model if they weren't? And they're also working on Source 2 and re-hiring old writers.
it should be made like the original half life either you give him the borealis or you destroy it and then he kills you. i don't what the borealis is? isn't it a teleportation thing? if so why not make gordon use it?
He didn't say "You got it," he said "Good job," I wish Barney said it instead of the citizen, you know what, I miss him which makes me think about that HL2 citizen's voice sounds like Judy's voice and ML citizen's voice sounds like Jennifer's voice.

Makes sense to me. Now no sequel is needed. :D
GOOD THEORY I LIKE IT. NOT TRYING TO BE A KNOW IT ALL HERE BUT THE HALF LIFE WIKI SAID HE PASSES OUT THAT'S WHY IT ALL WENT BLACK, JUST SAYING. ^_^
What a cliff hanger!
Hanging ... since ... 10 years now ...! Going to fall !
Dyms roro 14 years now
true
PedroThePanda64 I got good news for you
@@shaildarji9555 still a cliffhanger... but at least it had a plot twist... now where's HL3 when we need it...
0:05 if you listen carefully, you can hear barney saying ''good job gordon''
That's certainly very interesting, I played this so many years ago and I've never caught that.
Well... Maybe because Gordon did a good job? Whats wrong with that?
@@TriggerCurtis Barney wasn't even there, in fact, he was last seen at Episode One.
@@MondySpartan OMFG 😱😱😱😱
is barney's ghost
I can't wait for Artifact 2.
I'm waiting for ricochet 2
Wait what the fuck, you saw it coming 2 years ago
It's actually kinda coming, so is Half-Life 3 kinda
waitin' fo' Half-Life: Source 2
The absolutely melancholic music in the add just adds to this ultimately depressive cliffhanger.. even 15 years later, it still gives me goose bumps!
"Come on Gordon, we've got work to do.."
Man this was probably one of the best cliff hangers in gaming history :(
omg i was waiting for YEARS and STILL no half life 3 e_e
yeah :(
+brokensteel47 Lol it's never going to happen.
+Magic_ Pickle Patience is virtue, my friend.
Valve said they don't want to become COD releasing a new game every year instead they want to take pride in their work so for hl3 a employee said they are creating an entire new engine (source 3) to make the game look stunning
+Peep Beep Meme Creep
Where the fuck did you got this information from?
Please give me more "valve cant count to 3" jokes because they are so original...
UTTP Officer Mema this was good
+Metalwrath Gaben is so fat, he has to noclip around Valve.
+Henry Black XD
+Metalwrath xd chroma 3 case valve can count to 3
That One Lenny Face *thank you gif*
Welp, that's a pretty reasonable place to end a franchise with no further closure for at least 10 years.
And counting...
@@kerocz3363 the countdown has stopped
carso1500 Never would’ve imagined it.
Guys! It all makes sense! Gman "coordinated" Eli's death! It was obvious. Gman appeared on the screen which caused Alyx to relay those words into her father's ear. Eli of course knew it was Gman so he wanted to tell Gordon more about him. This enraged Gman so he "coordinated" Eli's death with the Advisor.
no
Chief you're on the mark, it's just the actual reason he did it
Valve employees:"Write that down ! Write that down !"
No fucking way you actually guessed that
@ianscheurer5077 I think the G-man wanted to prevent Eli from dying, actually. Remember, he's a mission-critical resource. He also wanted to hire Alyx as a backup plan, particularly after Gordon was recovered by the Vortigaunts.
So everything in HLA was basically him killing two birds with one stone.
Something tells me the dad is going to be ok..
The way Alyx shouted "Goddamit, let go of him!" was tough. She knew there wasn't really anything to be done, but she wasn't not gonna fight for her father. Made everything that came just next so hard.
I've always imagined G-Man standing there on the roof looking down on what's happening.
TheJonesChannel11
The most enraging thing would be if the played had to chose who dies Dog, Barney, Kleyner or even Alyx. Who knows?!
Andy7jhg *Kleiner and Alyx are in the clear, Dog and Barney however, are not. If they forced you to do that, it would most definitely enrage the player.
Well, he did try and warn them.
RIP, Robert Guillaume. :-(
And I never knew that the ending was improv?!? Amazing talent right there by alyxs voice actor
“Oh hey this never happened now...”
the longer we wait for HL3, the more I feel like Alyx... just crying forever
We know why we're here watching this ending again.
So you're telling me that shit was
I M P R O V I S E D????
Come on, Gordon. We’ve got work to do
Eli and Alyx saying "I love you" to each other as Eli prepares to die is probably the single most emotionally impactful story beat to any game I have ever seen. The selflessness of them both in Eli's final moment is phenomenally beautiful and moving. This is my favourite scene in any video game, ever.
Praise to the voice actors. That is not easy to create
Eli dies, game ends on a cliffhanger, I just beat it no more then an hour ago... But where's half life 3!?!! Come on valve we've been waiting long enough!
+Smiley Shoes you have a strange definition of "soon"
Controversy has already started... 😂😂
you beat the game no more than an hour ago (date and time of you writing that comment), but you have waited long enough? damn. guess the games ARE that good.
Valve announced a dota card game
What about Half Life: Alyx check out the ending for that!
Alyx: crying at her dads loss.
Freeman: *silence*
The sadness of this aged poorly after Half Life: Alyx’s ending
@Dynamic Distance It was needed, now we know what G-Man's plan was all along. I love when sequels (or prequels in this case, which is even more impressive) enrich the story and lore of the whole series, not just the entry. Alyx did exactly that. Now when you go back and play the old games, you'll understand this character better. It also set up HL3 in an awesome way.
@Dynamic Distance I wonder if the timeline change was forced due to the Epistle 3 story being released?
@Dynamic Distance I'm talking about the story for Episode 3 that was released by Marc Laidlaw, named Epistle 3, look it up
If past Alyx dies in Episode 3,Half-Life 2 will never happen
Half life 3 is never going to happen
Alyx: You too Dr. Magnusson!
Magnusson: *INDEED*
Me: Oh God...
Zavala: *INDEED EH?*
What a shame that the series shall end on the death of a main character that wasn't even really a main character.
I wish they said what happened later at least
@@santiagoherrera1853
Valve: HAHA YOU FOOL! YOU THOUGHT WE WERE DONE?
Eli was honestly my favorite because hes just so nice and lovable. Ill miss his voice actor he fit him so well :(
Luckily he didn’t die

half life fans: *P A T H E T I C*
half life alyx:
Rip dad, got licked
By hentai
eww
Not funny that was my favourite character and yes I'm late to the game
Same i just recently finished the entire series for like the second time only and its so good. Eli was definitely the best :(
He’s alive
Who is here after Alyx?
Valve hates number 3 so I made this:
*Half-Life 2 Episode 4*
or episode 2.5 :D
Half life 1: 2
The ending still to this day is makes me cry.
I'm here because of Half Life Alyx being announced
I just want closure, is that too hard to ask?
Apparently so since you can't even spell "hard".
Here is your closure: Marc Laidlaw retired this year and he was the creative director and lead developer behind Half Life and its story.
I was on my phone when I wrote that, but you got me there
he already released half life 3 story
Enjoy closure, valve confirmed they are making more half life games after alyx
This is why we need a third game come on valve make the fucking game already
NightFlame Games You're waiting for a team fortress 3? Whats the point in even making a third one? The second one is still alive and well, the community is still strong, the game is still getting updates, and most importantly, Valve is making a SHIT ton of money off of it. Why would they even make a third one? I see no point in it.
Ya
And while you were joking, I actually somewhat agree, waiting so long after such a big cliffhanger can be difficult, but, as Shigeru Miyamoto once said:
"a delayed game is eventually good
but a rushed game is forever bad"
so... yeah...
2020
We are getting a Half Life 3
Half-life 3 was not made or perhaps Half-life 3 is Half-life Alyx and 2020 is the year after Brave is releashed and You'll might say that we will get Half-life 2 Episode Three in 2008 and 2008 is the year Before Brave is releashed.
Just watched the trailer for the Alyx and am rewatching this scene for tears and straight vibes
Half-life Alyx: Close your eyes honey
This is the end ladies and gents. At least we had some closure.
Jonas no we don't. Did they destroy the borealis. What becomes of alyx and gordon!
No we didn't
We literally had the opposite of closure
openure
Valve: SIKE
And here lies Half life 2, thusfar doomed to recede into memory for so long as it lies buried.
guys, valve tend to make their games when they can innovate, they are innovators. Half life 1 & 2 were really advanced when they came out. Valve just need to make the game completely mind blowing. Theyre working on the source 2 engine which will probably be the most advanced engine ever. So expect it when they have finished that.
If it's not on the shelves by 2020, I'll believe it's never releasing.
I don't know if you fuckers predicted the future but we do have a half life game that is actually on Br and looks mind blowing and would also come out March 2020
2020: Now the destiny has been changed...
Let's go Gordon, we got work to do
Sigh, I want a sequel involving the Borealis so bad..
me too
We all want closure :(
Half-Life 2: Episode 3 "Scheduled for a Christmas 2007 release" (May 2019 and still no real news) I think it will eventually release because why would they say they're moving away from the episodic model if they weren't? And they're also working on Source 2 and re-hiring old writers.
I bring even better news from the future. Half life alyx
lookup "project Borealis" a development team is working on HL3.
Who's here after seeing VNN do an interview with Alyx
Who came here after watch that Half-Life: Alyx post credits ending. It gave me hope again.
Im,man,im so happy now.
That ending was incredible
8:22 play the half-life 2 theme song at that part, feel the chills
What are you talking about, Half-Life 2 has no theme song.
Nik1895 DJ Dain - Triage at Dawn |Remix| Path of Borealis
It's just a fan remix of one of the songs from the soundtrack. Triage at Dawn was never meant to be HL2 theme song either.
Nik1895 btu alot of people use it as the theme song, aagh just play that song on that part lol
Wow..i just started playing this theme and saw this comment..
I still can't believe she ad libbed that last scene.
where did u see that?
@@drewmorgan5025 She was involved in a recent interview with Valve News Network and confirmed it.
I hope Half-Life 3, (If it ever comes out) has multiple endings: Destroy the Borealis (Listen to Eli) or keep it for the G-Man, etc.
+Some Guy wtf
+Some Guy I said keep it FOR G-man, he obviously has interest in it.
"government man has nothing to do with the borealis"
-_-
No, that's not what Half Life would do. It just doesn't feel right.
no . no one wants that
it should be made like the original half life
either you give him the borealis or you destroy it and then he kills you.
i don't what the borealis is? isn't it a teleportation thing?
if so why not make gordon use it?
And that was the finale of the whole series
Valve: SIKE
Indeed, it was.
Just wait till you see the ending in Half life: Alyx...
Whos here after seeing ending of HL Alyx?
0:06 You hear that?
"You got it, Gordon!"
That's Barney Voice!
But where is he...
He didn't say "You got it," he said "Good job," I wish Barney said it instead of the citizen, you know what, I miss him which makes me think about that HL2 citizen's voice sounds like Judy's voice and ML citizen's voice sounds like Jennifer's voice.
HL: Alyx ending makes sense now
No it doesn't cuz ITS PREQUEL
even after the half-life alyx ending, this scene still hits me hard.
Who would have thought after 13 years that eli will actually be alright and alive.
And after 13 years... we would end in the exact same spot
