Guys, I know you’ll get a kick out of Jomboy doing the baseball lip reading. It’s hilarious. You’re right, Daz, the catcher is a very important position. He has to be aware of what’s going on in every position, and he is always communicating with the pitcher. That’s why catchers end up making great baseball managers later on. Also this channel you’ve just watched has many more fantastic baseball videos I think you’d appreciate.

I'm an avid baseball fan so I'll admit my bias upfront. It's not as "boring" as cricket and not as boring as Dave seems to think. Yes, you could get unlucky and watch a legit boring 1-0 game. Or you could get a 1-0 game that's one of the best sporting events you've ever seen. Sometimes the games that finish with the most runs aren't actually that exciting. While baseball is the slowest of the 4 major sports over here, games are ultimately just as long as NFL games. About 3 hours. Funny enough baseball fans are most likely to think soccer is slow and boring and vice versa. But, like I've learned with soccer, once you really learn about the game - the intricacies, the strategies, the players, the managers, the small stuff - it's incredible to watch. Would love to see more baseball reactions on the channel ⚾.

As a baseball fan myself. I personally love the marathon than is the regular season but unless you’re really invested I can see why someone would have a hard time getting excited when their are 162 games and one game isn’t make or break.
With that said, nothing beats the drama of and suspense of playoff baseball.

    • @ms_scribbles

I will never understand why my fellow Americans think soccer is boring. It's the ONLY sport with a league in the US, as far as I know, where the game doesn't stop unless there's an injury or a big foul, and a short break halfway through. It keeps going. And if there are stoppages, they *add* play time to the end to make up for it. The only game close to it is basketball, and even they stop. Football is constantly stopping every time a player or the ball hits the ground. Baseball stops every time there's a new batter and every time there's another inning. Gotta get those breaks in for commercials, after all! But in soccer, it doesn't stop. Sure, there isn't very high scoring, but that doesn't mean there's no action.

    • @truaqua
      @truaqua 2 года назад +2

@@ms_scribbles I think it's mostly due to the fact that the playing field is so large, and the ball moves so slowly around it in comparison. There also seems to be less scoring on average, not all the time of course.
One other thing I can think of is that in comparison to something like American football, the different positions seem to be much harder to distinguish and less specialized. (Think of a QB or Pitcher vs a Linebacker or Outfielder, clearly distinguishable to the naked eye and not interchangeable)

15:15 whiffle ball is kind of like your equivalent of street football. You can't really play baseball in the neighborhoods because the ball could break someone's window, damage someone's car, etc. You need a massive surface to play baseball and in tighter city and suburban neighborhoods, its not always around, so we'd play whiffle ball all the time as kids.

Going to a mlb game is very unique experience. It’s kind of like a casual thing where you hanging out and enjoying what the stadium has to offer. Then when something does happen you’re there to see it also. Where you sit can also determine how your experience could be. Like outfield there’s always the chance a ball may come your way. With all this being said though, the fans overall determine the mood.

Going to a baseball game is like going to a picnic, basically. Great for the kids.
The thing about playing the sport is it’s mostly mental. You have to know all the plays you have to make given every situation. It’s very much like chess. So you’re constantly running mental calculations and thinking about what you need to do given what happens when. And then the ball is hit your way and it’s very quickly go time.

12:48 By rule, whenever a batter pops the ball up, and it is caught for an out, all runners currently on a base at the time of that pitch and hit must first return to their base and "tag up" before they can advance to the next base. In the case of a runner (other than the batter) on first, having tagged second and now headed for third, must run back to first and must tag second in the process. The guy thrown out at first was almost to third when the ball was caught.

    Forgot to add:
As a sporting event, most regular season baseball games are like going to a picnic. You kick back, relax, watch some exciting stuff happen here and then, and just enjoy a chill shared public experience with people.
When the games are exciting or its a playoff atmosphere, it rivals the excitement of any other sport, but by and large baseball is a nice change of pace from other sports because it's a sport you can watch to relax, where most other sports are about getting you hyped up.
Sometimes on a hot summer day... vegging out in cool A/C with a cold drink, hotdog/burger/whatever, in front of a long, boring baseball game is like manna from heaven :)

12:35 Certain positions in certain situations see little action in the field. For instance, if you have a strikeout pitcher on the mound, 10 or more of the 27 outs during the game may never make it into the field of play. Some other pitchers specialize in putting downward movement on the ball, resulting in a lot of ground balls that don't make it past the infield.
The defense does reposition from batter to batter, based on a variety of situations. Number of baserunners/outs, playing for the double play, defending the bunt, "no doubles" (outfielders back up to keep ball from being able to get over their head while still in play) an offset setup for batters that consistently pull the ball (right-handed batters hitting primarily to left field or vice-versa) and more. So they can't quite fall asleep out there or chase butterflies 😅But there are definitley some pulled hamstrings. And with the ground they're expected to cover, they're typically either fast or have an amazing arm.

I played ball for 18 years. To help out with the Outfielder discussion and then standing there. When you play outfield you are constantly moving because you shift you’re outfielders depending on who is batting. For instance if they are left handed, they stand a higher chance to hit it down right field baseline. So the outfielders shift more to the right side of field. Since batters hit multiple times a game, you pick up on what the batters usually do.

Baseball stats are insane now. That Statcast graphic you were discussing around 6:37 is a great example of how sophisticated everything is becoming and how granular they can go with what they track and understand about the game and its players. If I'm not mistaken, there are advanced radar systems in the stadiums (LIDAR tech if I remember right) that track the exit velocity, angle, etc of the ball coming off the bat (pitching and fielding too). This data is aggregated and a baseline of "average" performance in certain areas of fielding, hitting, pitching is created, so you can really drill down into the nuts and bolts and understand if a certain player is an amazing glove, or special pitcher, or awesome batter... even if the "conventional stats" don't show them to be a standout player.
Like, there are some cases and positions where a guy being an amazing defender can more than make up for their mediocre batting (namely, shortstop, center field, second base, and catcher), or are such amazing batters that it makes up for their lackluster defense/etc (1B, LF, DH). It's changed the games in a lot of ways (some good and some arguably bad), but it's pretty amazing there is a real "science" to it in a sport that used to be a lot more about hunches, gut feelings, and tradition/conventional wisdom.
For just a taste of this type of stat revolution, search youtube for "Future of the Game: Baseball's Latest Statistical Revolution" from VICE Sports. The video is 6 year old now, so maybe some newer stuff is happening and its not the deepest explanation, but it covers a lot in just 5 minutes 25 seconds.
If I remember correctly, the very early way they started to look at some of this advanced stuff like exit velocity and spin rate on balls (in respect to balls/strikes) was using visual information from the high speed cameras installed in the stadiums. It was some part guesswork/opinion in some cases, but still relied on knowledge of geometry/trigonometry (probably some calculus too), and is even more sophisticated now that the teams are putting big money into this kind of information. There is an arms race for understanding this type of stuff among the teams because knowledge like this can let them to discover undervalued talent or even help their players improve their results by making minor adjustments to their game (a broad term for these more advanced stats and way of thinking about baseball = "sabremetrics" ... and sometimes "moneyball"

Like any sport, it's all about how much you invest into understanding it. Baseball is very tactical in the sense that you can try and figure out what pitch and where to throw it, by which hitter is best in which part of the zone, also dictated by pitch count and what the batter can expect to see. It's a cat and mouse game. There typically a lot of plays like this every game when the ball is in play. It's similar to how people will think soccer is boring if they don't understand the fundamental structure and tactics of the game, or American football, or rugby etc.. It's really how open you are to learning and investing your time into it that you will get the most out of it.

You don't GET to go back to your base when a fly ball is caught, you MUST. And if it isn't caught, you must advance before the ball reaches the higher base. Or, on a batted ball you think will be caught, you can stay on the base, and as soon as the fly ball is caught caught, you can try to advance one base (tagging up), or you can stay where you are. When you are on first base, for example, you HAVE to run on a ground ball, but you will get doubled up if you misjudge the ball and it ends up a line drive or fly ball that is caught. It's a catch-22.

They say the hardest thing to do in professional sports is to hit a fastball pitch in baseball. The pitcher is only 60 feet away from the batter launching a ball at them between 90 and 112 mph.. They have .413 seconds to react to a 100 mph pitch. First time you step into an 80 mph batting cage it feels like you're swinging in slow motion.

At 13:00, you were talking about the base runner on first, running to second after a line drive was caught by the second baseman. You said the runner wasn't going to make second so he went back to first, they let you do that. It's actually not his option, it's mandatory that he returns to first. If a ball is caught off the bat, any and all base runners must "tag up" and touch the base they are occupying before advancing. If a base runner is cheating by leading off, you'll always see them run backwards first. Occationally, though pretty rare, you'll see fast base runners tagging up two bases because it looked like a for sure hit into an open area of the outfield, but a spectacular catch was made. If the ball is not caught off the bat, base runners don't have to tag up. That's why they cheat. The base runner has to wait or try to judge how the play will turn out. This is a vital rule to know to make the game more exciting. Base runners and base coaches are always making calculated gambles. It's fun.

Yeah, the catcher puts down his fingers to indicate the type of pitch but the pitcher can shake it off and choose a different pitch. Occasionally you will see the catcher call timeout and he will go out to the pitcher's mound and have a chat. Catching is a tough position. It is pretty hard on your knees to squat down for an hour or more.

Baseball is the best sport bar none. It takes concentration which is rare these days but as far as skill and knowledge of your sport, it’s the best. Anyone can play as it doesn’t take pure athleticism, it requires smarts and understanding of adjustments. Baseball is king.

So glad to see Rusty Greer get some love at 9:28. He didn't have a very long career, but he was one of the most solid players in the game at that time. That diving catch is especially important because it saved Kenny Rogers' perfect game (9 innings with no opposing batters reaching base under any circumstances). There have only been 23 perfect games in the history of baseball.

If you'd like to react to more baseball, you may want to check out some triple-play compilations, especially a recent one from MLB. Triple plays (3 outs on one pitch) are super rare, and may get a little technical (the unassisted ones are spectacular), but they can get really exciting and even a little crazy.

Its not "dull" to watch a baseball game. It's actually fun, especially if you support a team and they are in the middle of a pennant race. If there is a lot of scoring, that's exciting. But even if it's a low-scoring game that's a pitching duel, you're going to see a lot of great pitching and a lot of great defense, plus there is the energy of the other fans. But you have to be into baseball. If you're just there as an observer and you're not into the game or the team you're watching, yeah, it probably could seem dull.
But during baseball season, the teams play almost every day, for 162 games in the regular season. So you get totally immersed in it. And then there are the playoffs and the World Series. I get what you're saying, and there are some games that are not terribly exciting. But overall, if you're a fan, baseball is a great sport to watch.

baseball is crazy because it's waiting and waiting and then WAMMO some insanely impressive stuff just went down, I mean they know the game so well that it's like reflex to them, when teams are hitting and the stakes are high it's just the greatest sport ever, and I'm hardly even a fan, haha, in other sports you can get ahead and hardly worry about the outcome changing, but not in baseball, you can never relax, and they're jumping onto solid ground, haha, imagine running as fast as you can and doing a belly flop

Im not that into sports but my dad and brother are. After watching the Padres V Miami (Idk their team name) Game yesterday I just had to watch this. 0-2 in favor of Miami. 9th inning and Miami had already bat. Padres had 2 outs and a runner on 1st. It was the very end of the game and it looked like the Padres were gonna lose. If just one more person got out that would be the end of the ballgame. Luckily we get another runner on a base so now we have one on 1st and 2nd base. Then comes up a batter who recently joined the Padres, we knew nothing about him besides that he used to be on the Miami team. First pitch he gets, BOOM! Homerun and the Padres win 3-2. I'm not much of a sports person but I got chills when I saw that play.

I grew up early GenX. I didn’t know anyone in my neighborhood, school, church, Boy Scout group etc who didn’t play Little League baseball. It was just what you did. Boys played baseball, the girls played soccer or nothing and the little kids got sticky from snow cones. That was American suburban life in the 1970s. It isn’t as prominent any longer and that’s a shame. I wish it were more popular. I hope kids still learn teamwork and sportsmanship somewhere
