To be clear, the A's offered Nathan Patterson a minor league contract, not a contract with their MLB team. He pitched in a few rookie league games before he was cut. The next season he signed with a single-A minor league team (three levels below MLB). He pitched in only five games before they let him go. His ERA at that level was 13.50, which is terrible. He could throw hard, but he wasn't good enough for professional baseball.

It’s truly difficult to grasp just how amazingly good professional sports players are, the absolute shittiest AA Ballplayer is still LEAGUES better than most amazing college players. The true MLB stars are a percentage of a percentage of a percentage

Rest in peace to Tim Wakefield. The man interviewed during the knuckleball pitch segment. So glad I got to see him pitch live 23 years ago

If you’re a left handed pitcher, you’ll quickly be signed because there are not enough lefties available. As for getting a contract, throwing 98mph is doable but throwing 98 with control and accuracy for several innings is challenging. The higher the pitch count, the lower the velocity due to fatigue.

Kabir, then there is Randy (The Big Unit) Johnson, all 6'10" of him; throwing 98 mph with almost a sidearm motion. If you were a left-handed batter, he was releasing the ball behind your head. Now you have milliseconds to figure out of it's a strike or something that can kill you.

You should check out some videos of pitches being overlayed each other. Really shows the difference in pitches and how hitters can easily be crossed up. Pitchers will use “tunneling” essentially throwing a pitch to start followed up by one in a similar location but different speed or movement later in the at bat to catch them off guard

Baseball's origins are associated with both rounders and cricket. Documentarian Ken Burns has a series about the history of baseball called... Baseball. The 10 episodes can be found on RUclips.

This video explains it very well. I'm impressed.

The point of the different pitches is to make it harder for the batter to hit the ball.

Geez, unless the catcher has to stand up to catch it (wild pitch) I have no idea what I am seeing!

The most sought after pitchers are the fireballers, especially those with high velo and accurate movement. As starters pitch less and less innings, getting a bunch of fireball relievers is the key to success just look at the Orioles.

Unfortunately Nathan Patterson was unable to turn that fastball into a real weapon. In 2021, his last season, playing in the Milwaukee Brewers minor league, he had an ERA of 13.5. ERA is the average number of runs the pitcher allows not included errors. This lead to his retirement. Too bad. Would have tuned in to watch him get a start in the 'bigs'. Be safe Kabir!

Hitting the slow pitches is a little harder than u think it is, especially when you're hitting w/a baseball bat

If you wonder why a kid a get a contract just because he throws over 90 mph, grab a ball and try by yourself, that's extremely difficult, and that's because you have the talent already, and then you can build up control and other things, the other way around is impossible.

Batters aren't trained to hit slow pitches. Fools them every time.
