As much as some of us complain about our systems, I'm glad to be an Aussie. Been hospitalised four times over the past 3 years. Serious surgery, so many scans, tests,, medications, rehab etc etc. All happened ASAP & I didn't pay a cent (except the taxes I have paid in my lifetime).
Also know people that have worked for mines. Some just did simple things like drive a mini-bus between mining camp and local airport to transport workers and earned tons more money than doing similar low-skill thing in our cities.

The thing about the towns and cities retaining their unique characters is down to a very specific reason: the place is freaking huge. All the major cities are hundreds, if not thousands of kilometres apart, and trust me, the climates (and therefore the buildings, clothing, even eating habits and recreation) are very different. July in Melbourne is a whole different world from July in Brisbane.

I totally agree, we take things for granted and whinge when it seems inconvenient to be delayed or something changes! Listening to them comparing England to Australia really sheds a light on how lucky we actually are! You should look up FIFO jobs in WA, I believe they are paid from $100-200k, and have few overheads, and now women can apply too - sounds good! Farm work is highly paid for short term hard work, accommodation and food is included - the big bonus is it's a great way to make friends and get fit! 🤔

The longest I've had to wait to see a GP is about 3 days.
I started drinking tea when I was about 8 and coffee when I was about 12. If caffeine is supposed to stunt your growth then that's a good thing, as I'm 6'4 now and in my 50s.
Having been to a number of nations overseas, I have to agree that Australian coffee is pretty bloody good in the greater scheme of things. Most coffee I had in the US was awful.
Most FIFO jobs are hard, hard work in the middle of nowhere and the pay reflects that. $60/hr or about $120k/pa.
As of 1 July 2023 the National Minimum Wage is $23.23 per hour or $882.80 per week. This is Federally mandated, not voluntary.

Of course you can get a blood test done in a short amount of time. Nearly every GP clinic where you go to see the Dr actually has a Blood Test Room in their clinic. They hand over what test you need on a form , you grab a number off the desk say 4 rooms down, youre called, they do it on the spot, then you go about your day. Literally every Clinic has a Registered Nurse Room( for injections, stitches, dressings), and a Blood Room( aust. Clinical Labs) in one spot.

Having said that Im rural regional but my clinic has a pathology nurse there twice a week to take your bloods and if I have to get x rays scans etc I can get in pretty quickly (within a couple of days) at the major hospital half an hour away. The clinic nurse will do vaccinations without having to make a seperate appointment. Have no complaints.at all.

It's mainly a rural thing if it takes a longer time. I'm in the western suburbs of Adelaide and there are medical centres everywhere (5 of more in a five minute drive...one is a minute walk away) and they all seem to have bloods, eye, scans and a chemist in the same building.
Except during covid I can get a next day appointment almost 100% guaranteed and same day if I'm not too late in the day 75% chance.
Once there waiting times are always different and are usually caused by the patients before me taking longer...but it can be an hour after your scheduled time or immediately.

@@lexsaunders1742 I didn't say Aussie's aren't friendly. I said it can be harder than you think if there are already established. long term groups. This guy was friendly but not into rugby, golf or soccer. He enjoyed more individual sports like tennis and squash. He ended up getting a good job in Canada where he made quite a few friends - mostly new to Canada. I've moved cities and while I still have my old friends in my old city, my new friends are also new to this city. People new to the environment are open to meeting new people and establishing friendships. In a new city, finding an established friendship group who are interested in the same things as you are and willing to include a new person is not always easy. I've recently been invited to another group by an old friend. It was interesting to see those who welcomed the new person to the group and those who were suspicious of this new person - me. I've persisted and now feel welcomed by all but it took a year before I felt fully accepted by all of the group. They had long established friendships and adding a new person was difficult for some.

Sydney has many small headlands around the harbour and rivers. Since these areas don’t get much through traffic, they can develop a village like feeling. Or at least they used to. Now I’m not sure if it is true.
Until recently, the Sydney CBD had a strict height limit, which made it different from other cities which embraced skyscrapers. So the skylines of different Aussie cities vary.

The biggest difference I saw as an Aussie when I went to the UK was the general price difference in food. I didn’t factor in the conversion rates when I went across I just looked at prices in their native currency. For example I found I could get a good pub meal for between £4-9 back in 2010, something like fish and chips, a burger and chips etc… the same sized meal in Australia would set you back between $12-18.

if you join in to things you will easily make friends in Australia.
If you find that the local swimming pool has "learn to swim" programs for children then take your children along and chat to other parents while your children are given swimming lessons.
Also if you get involved in volunteering you will easily make friends. Examples - join community groups that do some wonderful things to help people - and raise money to do these activities by holding BBQs at Bunnings (HUGE hardware stores)
Also visit places like ethnic celebrations in a park - share the food they sell there and learn to appreciate their culture.
Or if you have children then get involved with the parents who join in to do occasional volunteer events to tidy up the garden at the kindergarten their children attend.

FIFO jobs are usually in the mines, or large construction, usually mines as well, lol, and the hourly rate used to be great, but these days is similar to the city jobs, but they are doing 84 hour weeks, 2-3-or4 weeks on with one week off.
The wages could be anywhere from $2,500-5000 per week, but you have to work for it. Yeah, there will be people who claim to be earning $10,000 per week, doing nothing, 1 week on 1 week off even time roster, but they are either specialists in their field, on a very short term contract, won't last long bludging like that, or more than likely they are exaggerating. $150k-250k is achievable, but then they take out the tax.
For comparison, the bloke in the city doing a 40 hour week would still be on anywhere from $1000-1800 per week depending on skilled, semi skilled, or Trade level, and is home every night. Many marriages get sacrificed because people get addicted to mine money.
Check the weather maps for average conditions before deciding on FIFO. Many mines are in the Desert and get 45-50degC summers, which may also be 25-30degC days in Winter with minus 7degC nights. So you start your shift at 6am at -7degC it gets us into mid 20s to mid 30s during the day, and stays warm until 10pm. Many types of discomfort and you can't dress for the weather. Snow jacket in the morning, sleeves still rolled down through the day as per mine site rules, and a handful of hours stuck in the 'too hot for the jacket, or too cold to take it off' part of every day.
Some of my experiences, with photos if you want the proof...lol
-in Mt Isa 32-34C nights 42-44C days 80+% humidity. and that was in mid Spring, I don't think Summer gets too much worse though.
    - Middle of Oz and Northern West Oz - 54C-58C on the thermometer although those are not official Bureau of Meteorology numbers, they were on Calibrated Instruments. The black sheath on the HV Cables were 76C and the front end loader tyre 68C in one place, 72C in the other.
    - Nth QLD, 46degc day 102% humidity, I know it can't get over 100%, but you could see haze in the air and as the temps dropped to 36C the moisture started to precipitate out of the air.

The Australian public health system is not perfect, but it depends on who is in government at the time. If it is a genuine emergency, you will be seen quickly, but it can take a while for non emergency problems. A year ago I had to go to an emergency department and I received ultrasound and other scans and tests within half an hour of arriving at the hospital but it took 6 months to see a urologist for a non emergency procedure. My doctor, I can get an appointment within a day or two depending on how busy she is. I am currently on a disability pension and receive just over $600 per week and I also receive 50% rebate on my rent and 20% on utilities. I get 2 taxi rides per week and 2 interstate bus or train rides per year so I can go for a holiday. I rent a 3 bedroom house on a quarter acre block that is a 2 minute walk from a major shopping centre and public transport hub for $250 per week. Generally after paying my bills and food I am left with between $100-150 to spend on whatever I want, I can also get an advance payment up to $1300 per year or multiple smaller advances multiple times a year, personally I get a $650 advance twice a year. Yes, I do feel very lucky to have been born in Australia and the only real problem is it does get a little hot during summer. For the past 3 weeks the maximum temperature has been between 35c and 25c, Easter is going to be around 25c all weekend with a possible shower on Monday.

Its not exactly like how they describe it, there are some MASSIVE "*" to alot of those points they mentioned...
The mines "can" sound like a perfect scheme, but there's some big "***" attached to that, and I bet neither of them have gone and done that.
Healthcare is pretty good, and it also entirely depends on the place, too. Most GP clinics are usually set up to have blood-testing on site, and usually its a few days to hear back the results. But our whole General Practice Doctors setup is designed to provide people with swift access to things like perscriptions and early diagnosis of more severe illnesses.
...the biggest one I dislike hearing from them on was money...thats simply not true, and they are CLEARLY coming from a pre-existing financially secure place.
Almost all the people I went to school with, all the cousins in my family... almost NONE of them own a home. Most of them nowadays go on vactions "camping", because camping out in the outback is affordable! Over 70% of most Australians have no money in their savings; the "National Average" that "everyone has $1000 in the savings account" comes from the skewed statistic that the last Government did to make themselves look like they weren't tanking the economy; by including the savings records of the rich and mega-rich.
After groceries, rents, petrol, and other basics of living... most people are pressed to have enough money for Macca's!

I mean you are not wrong on your points, but the money thing is about being compared to other countries. No other country does it better, we could also do a lot better ourselves, but being best is not about "the best you can achieve" it's about "being better than the competition".

Exactly. It's like when the media trots out the line about the average wage being around $95,000. This includes all the billionaires and millionaires. $95,000 per year puts you in the top 20% of all income earners according to the tax office. Hardly average. If there are 10 people in a room earning $1000 per week then the average is $1000. But if you have 9 people in the room earning $1000 and 1 person earning $1 Million the average for all people becomes $100,900 per week.
The Median or 50% mark of salaries is around $56,000. Around half of the "average". But that doesn't sound as good politically. Also recent studies show that a family with both parents earning the median salary ($112,000 per year) can only afford to rent around 35% of properties in the country. Australia also has 3 capital cities that are some of the most expensive in the world to buy a house. Melbourne and Sydney are more expensive than London when you compare Median house prices to Median salary.

The job situation getting paid to live in really remote areas, mining towns…great for guys…but not always good for young females. Where I live…Gold Coast is not always easy to get a job…& my pay does not support me. It does not out way the rent & cost of living. I live quite frugally too.

Easier for kids to go to school & sports. Less commute. They have embraced our culture. I'm looking at moving from the big smoke of Brisbane to rural Tassie. If you were talking about Sunny Coast Hinterland to the Coast is only 40km's or so. The UK to Brisbane Australia flights are the better part of of 24 hours excluding layovers.

I think the key is that I met them all through shared interests, so if you get out and do stuff (go to music events, play sport, do classes or take up a hobby) you'll probably meet people with stuff in common. since you're already going to be going to some of the same places, it's not that hard to forge a friendship.

If caffeine stunted growth, there’d be generations of short people from drinking Coke and Pepsi. That would be the case for traditional English too. Black tea can contain as much caffeine as coffee g for g, but how much ends up released depends on type of leaf/bean and how hot the water is in the brewing of each. A flat white in a school, which is generally what most students drink, is often prepared with water at 90C, reducing the released caffeine, also reducing scalding chances. That would have the same caffeine as black tea, and just a little more than a cola drink.

Kabir, you need to study the different visas because if you come in as a tourist and you work, even for free, or for food, you’ll be in big trouble. You can only work if your visa states as such, and there are limits to the types of jobs you can do. Find lit BEFORE you plan to visit.
A working visa is restricted to a list of available jobs. Do your research thoroughly and beware of agencies who make false claims, because those crooked agencies exist but get you into trouble and are often not held accountable.
We are also very strict on bio security, so don’t bring in any seeds, food or live material, and not declare it. Declare everything and even if you lose an item, you won’t get fined for lying on a legal document.
