In the last 20ish years we've introduced the word "cookie" in to our vocab but cookies are usually exclusively large, round, soft and chewy where as biscuits are hard and crunchy/crumbly. The older generation will still call all of them biscuits

Watching you finally try the Vegemite and Shapes is just so darn wholesome to watch for us Aussies. This is a big milestone everyone. A rite of passasge.
Honeycomb (in chocolate bars) is basically caramelised sugar, golden syrup, butter and bicarbonate soda. It’s really fun to make at home with kids because of the bubbling/fizzing factor and how easy it is to make. But that is why it basically just tastes like crunchy caramel.
Not Australian (very American lol) but I was once vegetarian, Vegemite is really good as a substitute for beef flavoring in soups, sauces, and gravies!
@@EgoFeederz Not all of us are animal rights protesters, me personally (10 year vegetarian) am a vegetarian because It just feels kind of weird putting a dead animal in my mouth. Some of us are just on diets, and some of us are vegetarian for religious purposes.
Because Vegemite is a savoury item, you must use it sparingly so that it doesn’t overwhelm your taste buds. Don’t spread it on like you would with jam. It has a strong taste.
I dare you to give jam, cheese and vegemite a go. Jam on the toast, vegemite on the kraft singles cheese, vegemite facing up. My mate and I have been eating it for 40 years, give it a crack.

Starbucks failed in Australia because the coffee was such bad quality and has ridiculous amounts of sugar. Theres still one or two spots but they dont even come close to Australian coffee.
This is not true. A regular cappuccino from Starbucks does not have any sugar in it, unless you count the lactose from the milk. But that is just regular local (Australian when in Australia) milk there is no extra sugar in it. Frankly Starbucks tastes a lot like Gloria Jeans, Coffee Club, or Zaraffas, and is ordered the same way. By default it is a plain single shot of espresso coffee and the rest is frothed milk. You have to specify how you prefer it, like asking for a double shot if you like strong coffee, or asking for sugar/flavour shots. Starbucks actually withdrew from Australia because we were already drinking espresso coffee. In America they only really drank drip/percolated coffee before Starbucks came along. Espresso coffee is so different to drip coffee that they had the market cornered. The quote from Starbucks when they withdrew from Australia was that "Australia already knows what good coffee tastes like". Meaning we already drink espresso, it had nothing to do with the taste. They were talking about how it was prepared.
i'm glad Starbucks didn't really take off here (in South Australia) though sorry for all the franchisees who invested so heavily and lost out as a result of the closures. Starbucks just came too late to our cafe culture when we already had so many good cafes, and a local franchise like "Cibo". of course, Starbucks didn't do themselves any favours by having ridiculous flavour combinations/additives like "Lime syrup"!! i've heard from many folks who've been to America (including Americans) that coffee is plentiful there but of pretty bad quality, so we've been relatively lucky to have a lot of good quality imported and also grown here. But its getting very expensive if you want the good stuff.

You can't ask them why they're upset, you can't scold them for being too noisy since they obviously won't understand.. yeah..I'm all set lol I'm SOOO happy that my kids were very well behaved babies! Ok, technical explanation for biscuit/biscotti vs cookie is that biscuit and biscotti come from French & Italian respectively. It means "twice cooked", and if you've ever made biscotti you'll know why. Cookie comes from German/Dutch koekje, meaning "little cake". Really, they're the same thing, except that biscuits tend to be on the crisper side while cookies tend to be softer, not by design, but just because that's the cooking tradition of the respective cultures. So now you know.

I love how everyone has to say "as an Aussie" in their comments so everyone knows theyre Australian. As an Aussie I know this is what we do for absolutely no reason
Most Aussie kids have their first taste of Vegemite on toast! Nice fresh white crusty bread, butter (NOT margarine) and spread it over, but not too thick. Shapes are baked not fried. The shape of the biscuit is actually the shape of the label on the pack - each flavour is a diiferent shape. Cheezels - every kid wore them in their fingers as they ate rhem. Wagon wheels - so good! Aussie chocolate tastes different to US chocolate, and even UK chocolate. Tim Tams are life! Double choc are the best.
Thank you for this video. I've watched many videos of Americans trying Australian food, and they are usually very rude & disrespectful with their comments. You guys did an amazing job, and thank you for being respectful... and actually liking them. Wow. Thtis is the 1st video I've seen of Americans liking Aussie treats. Thank you! And yes, others don't understand the "honeycomb" flavour of our Violet Crumbles. (We actually have a "Crunchie" that's similar, but is airier and melts in the mouth even more... and is possibly even sweeter.) Anyway, well done guys. Thanks! 😎👍❤️🇦🇺
Yes! Start them early on the Vegimite. My daughter eats it from the jar. Hence why she has her own personalised jar. With butter first on toast, spread sparingly... it's yummy! 😉😉 Enjoy! 🤭
Iced vovos were first sold in 1906. They are often used in baking slices and desserts. Tim Tams came out in 1964. Arnotts is now an American owned brand.
We had a doctor who lived down the street who drove a brown Volvo. Some wag painted white and pink stripes down the middle and painted over the letter L. Classic!
Wait, no milo?! Big cheer for the South Australian who sent the fist package, fruchocs are iconic here - actually made a few kms down the road from my house.
Vegemite is so good for you too - packed with B vitamins "We're happy little Vegemites as bright as bright can be! We all enjoy our Vegemite for breakfast, lunch and tea!..." part of the old jingle - the really old ads are awesome. Being a "happy little Vegemite" has long been part of our vernacular.
Tim Tam was a champion American racehorse. He won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness stakes in 1958. Aussies love horse racing and I guess the inventor of Tim Tams liked the name.
And like everything in Australia , Vegemite is deadly , a bloke fell in a vat of vegimite and they couldnt find his body , not like the bloke who drowned falling in a vat of BEER , but he did get out 4 times for a piss , just beware , thats all im saying , RIXTA HA
My whole life I detested Vegemite with a passion. In my early 50’s I tried it again and absolutely LOVE it. I have had to stop buying it because I would go through the smallest jar in a week. However, Myer had it after Christmas for $3 a jar. I bought two and I have to store it at the back of the pantry so I don’t see it. It’s also great to ad to stews and bolognaise sauces for the salty flavour.
You are one of the first people I have seen on these to spread the vegimite properly.. if all other reviewers did they too would probably like it.. but they usually pack it on way too thick
As an Australian I really enjoyed watching you and your family testing Aussie snacks and I love the way you pronounce things. I love wagon wheels, they have been my favourite since I was in primary school, ( a long long time ago) they use to be be much much bigger and sold separately now they are so tiny in comparison.
Totally agree with you. As a kid they were a snack in themselves from the tuckshop counter at school. It was no use buying them on way to school as I would have scoffed it before the school gates 😇 Cheers from 🏴
Sometimes you can get homemade wagon wheels in cafes. Now that's a REAL taste of childhood! Strangely enough I'm not really a fan of the flavour but as a nostalgic experience it can't be beat
Wagon wheels used to be sold separately and where the size of the palm of your hand. The flavour is slightly different and they came in a packet that was open at the top(more like a bag), sold in the local “milk bar” or corner store.
Hey Ryan as someone who was raised in Australia and LOVES Vegemite,I will tell you that I not only eat it but I smear it all over my roasts and when they come out of the oven, the flavor is out of this world it seems to enhance the flavor of beef. Fun fact...Vegemite is a yeast product and they say it's the reason Aussie girls have beautiful skin and hair. It offers a lot of nutrition especially for us women. BTW...you have a beautiful family...thanks for sharing.
p.s. vegemite is excellent for mixing [ a fork full ] with roasting tray [ minus most fat ] residue plus vege water and plain flour to make gravy and cut leftover lamb leg / beef small, mix with leftover gravy in pot / microwave to have with mash peas and carrots next nights dinner.
The mouth heals on its own really fast without salt, but when you do use salt it heals faster. Vegemite has salt in it which helps heal the wound. Salt also helps with cuts like at the beach the salt water stings it but it helps heal it.
Vegemite is a bi product of making beer. You use the yeast from the process of making beer and what's left makes Vegemite. With the timtams you bite off both ends and use the biscuit like a straw
One of the ways in which American English differs from English elsewhere is because we all tend to put the emphasis on the first syllable e.g. CHEESE-ull, CADbries, ARE-nuts, CARR-a-'mel. This results in the last syllable often getting a bit mangled, and explains why the shwa sound is the most common sound in English. (shwa is very like "uh" or 'er'). This might also be the reason Aussies cut the ends of word off & replaces them with "y", "o" or even "z". e.g: Boris = Bozza, Cheryl = Shazza, and Xmas presents = Chrissy prezzies, Service station = servo, ambo = either an ambulance or the paramedics who ride in the ambulance, avocado = avo.
I truly loved this!! What a sweet family you are. The first food review I've seen where the Vegemite was spread correctly haha! Love your brother, his reactions were hilarious 😂

Personally, I like a pairing of Vegemite and Avocado on Toast (since Avocado always seem to want some salt imo). Another great way is to have vegemite on Toast and then melt some Cheddar cheese on top of that. I have seen a few recipes for using Vegemite in a stew as kind of like a stock enhancer.
When we were kids in the 70’s and we were sick mum would make ‘vegemite soup’ and toast soldiers….basically a couple of teaspoons of vegemite in hot water - the soup - and you dip the buttered toast fingers in then eat.
i heard that normally if you didnt grow up with vegimite that you wont like it but as an american i tried it and have to say it is now one of my favs i love it
Starbucks is rare in Australia because we are a country of coffee snobs. There are videos about why they failed here but apparently they have plans to try again on Oz, having learnt what we like. Next try the Tim Tam suck - bite each end off the Tim Tam and use it like a straw in your coffee. Delicious.
The TimTam Smash is when you bite off opposite corners and suck Australian coffee through it like a straw then eat it . I'm not a coffee or chocolate eater but my mates say it's the bomb lol .
Fruchocs, made to use up left over dried fruit (apricot and peaches).. Invented just up the road from me in Radelaide, South Australia.. Also Chicken Salt.. Invented about 5 miles from my house!! Vegemite is good for a soup or stock or stew/casserole (stir in less than a teaspoon).. Bags can pop due to the pressure in the planes cargo bay.. Seen Lays around, same but different.. And Oz is HUGE on "Heath Star" rating and "no colouring/preservatives/flavours" We recycle here, so we re-use our shopping bags.. And Starbucks went bankrupt in less than 2 years here, need I say more haha

In Asia they think it's gonna taste like chocolate no matter how hard you try to tell them otherwise (and to stop them from slathering on bread)
Yeah, and it’s Woolworths which is American. He doesn’t know our Australian way of changing the name
Single use plastic bags are pretty much written out in Australia.. most plastic bags or just plastic in general have to be at least 80% made from recyclable material, bags cost 15 cents per bag and are now the general bin liners for our nation

When you're spreading vegemite on toast or bread, we Aussies know and have like a little saying , "You Scrape on ,scrape off" like Mr.Miagi on Karate Kid 👍🏾😂😂
Yeah, nah mate. Scrape on, and scrape on some more if you're a true Aussie. Also, no butter. Otherwise you're WEAK.
That's so funny, haha or just wait for toast not to be so hot then it doesn't all melt hahaha

You need the toast to be super hot, spread on the butter so it melts into the bread, then the thin layer of Vegemite so the melted butter mixes in with it. Mmmm perfection! So delicious!!
Yes my uncle used to say this!
It's so great to see someone try vegimite the way we eat it. Usually they take a whole spoonful in their mouth and then get all poopy about how bad it is!!! No one eats it like that so it refreshing to see a genuine taste - thank you :). BTW try it in a toasted sandwich with cheddar cheese (I think you call a toasted sandwich 'grilled cheese'), but truly, you won't be disappointed - vegimite and cheese toasties are the best :P
This is so respectful and wholesome. How cute
I usually get bored with these food tasting videos, but I just love the whole family being involved. You are all so gentle. Just lovely.
Youve earned your Vegemite licence lol done well. Nothing beats lots of butter with amount of Vegemite of your choice. Vegemite with cheese. Even Vegemite with tomatoes salt and pepper, is gold 👌
Vegemite, cheese and red onion toasties are great!
In the last 20ish years we've introduced the word "cookie" in to our vocab but cookies are usually exclusively large, round, soft and chewy where as biscuits are hard and crunchy/crumbly. The older generation will still call all of them biscuits
...A cookie is a type of biscuit. A biscuit is not a type of cookie. There's the long and short of it for any who need to know.
@@7thlittleleopard7 Yes but in the U.S they call them all cookies.
What we call a scone Americans call a biscuit. Cookies generally have 2 different sugars and eggs in the recipe compared to most Australian Biscuits
@@iggyblitz8739 I am aware. I also know that they call biscuits what we call scones. I'm saying that the difference between a biscuit and cookie outside of America is what I noted.
@@cathybaldry7822 Yeah, a US biscuit is kinda half way between a scone and a dumpling in texture, they are not quite the same.
I never looked beyond the back of the packet to solve this mystery.
Not Australian (very American lol) but I was once vegetarian, Vegemite is really good as a substitute for beef flavoring in soups, sauces, and gravies!
Glad you came to your senses. Love ❤️ from Queensland, Australia 🇦🇺

Would you like a $12 coffee with caramel icecream sauce for an extra $1?

@@uzetaab Starbucks is shit here in Thailand. Just my opinion 🤷🏼♂️
i'm glad Starbucks didn't really take off here (in South Australia) though sorry for all the franchisees who invested so heavily and lost out as a result of the closures.

Hopefully they'll do the actual slam part and not just look at their Tim Tams melting and falling through their fingers into their hot beverage, as most non-Australian RUclips folk seem to do. 9 times out of 10 those trying the Tim Tam slam think that the act of sucking a hot liquid through a Tim Tam is the slam part, and then hold the rapidly melting Tim Tam in their hand while they get excited that they could use the Tim Tam as a straw. This is not a Tim Tam slam. This is a Tim Tam sucky fail.

This was a great video, I loved it so much. So glad you enjoyed our snacks, we do pretty good here down under! 😂 But I gotta say my fave parts were you mispronouncing all the product names. I was cry laughing.
True, but Americans still call hard biscuits cookies.
Thank you you taught me something I didn't know ✌️💖

Fun fact: Vegemite is great for mouth ulcers. It stings a little going on but helps clear them up for some reason.
Its the salt that does the job! This is still my go to cure for an ulcer
The mouth heals on its own really fast without salt, but when you do use salt it heals faster. Vegemite has salt in it which helps heal the wound. Salt also helps with cuts like at the beach the salt water stings it but it helps heal it.

Ok I had the worst ulcer and I tried it but I don't think it helped
Ryan, congrats to your wife and child on being part of the video - that's a big step
This might also be the reason Aussies cut the ends of word off & replaces them with "y", "o" or even "z". e.g: Boris = Bozza, Cheryl = Shazza, and Xmas presents = Chrissy prezzies,
Service station = servo, ambo = either an ambulance or the paramedics who ride in the ambulance, avocado = avo.
