The Art of Video Game Combat

  • Many games have combat baked into the game's mechanics, but a rare few combat systems stick with you long after you put the game down. There are a few titles that come to mind, most notably the Devil May Cry Series, the Monster Hunter World and Iceborne Duo.
I've been playing a lot of Dragon's Dogma 2 and I find myself thoroughly enjoying the combat system, often finding myself switching between the different vocations and exploring all the unique skills and playstyles that define each weapon type.
This does not erase the fact that there are some questionable things about the game, but credit where credit is due, the combat system in the game is top-notch. Melee combat specifically combines three essential ingredients into a delicious, visceral package that makes combat encounters fun and addictive. This cycle was so compelling that it drove me to make this video, and share my thoughts on what makes a great melee combat system. Of course, these are just my thoughts and you may have a different view on things - I'm curious to hear what you guys think!
Thank you so much to everyone who's liked and subscribed to the videos so far - and I truly hope that you stick around for all the new things I have planned for the channel. Peace!

Hey everyone! Do you like this format? What did you not like about it? What would you want to see me improve on? Let me know, I'll do my best to respond to as many comments as possible!
This is the first time I'm posting something like this where it'smore focused on the breakdown of gameplay mechanics and adding some sort of analysis and commentary in terms of what I enjoy about certain games. Really appreciate all the support so far and I cannot wait to show you all the cool new videos I have planned. Take care and have a great day ahead!

Some games like the Dark Souls series and other Souls games, use the lack of hit reaction from the enemy to broadcast to the player that they have a large amount of poise. In that context, it makes sense why those types of enemies would not have a reaction to your attacks, as it really does convey to the player that they are either severely under-leveled to be attacking that enemy, or that you'll need to rely on more than straight up brute force direct attacks to take them down.

Hey! thanks for leaving a comment, means a lot :)
I agree 100% with what you said here and I kinda wish I thought about it earlier when I was scripting the video haha, I'll keep that in mind if there's another game's combat system which captures my attention. A perfect example of this is the tower knights in Dark Souls 3 which hang around Oceiros's boss arena.
Those dudes can take a lot of punishment from all kinds of weapons and only break poise if you hit them with the heaviest weapons/spells in the game.
That said, thank you so much again for leaving a comment - really helps out a small channel and points out things I may have missed. Appreciate you and I wish you a beautiful day!

I think shields should have more of an offensive role - one thing I really like about Dragon's Dogma is the way shield-bashing isn't just a viable tactic, but potentially very effective. More options that allow you to parry, feint or disrupt enemy actions without simply hitting them hard, or acrobatically avoiding incoming attacks, would be good.

Hey! thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment :)
I've been getting absolutely demolished by Work, University, and Real life that I haven't had the time to even check back on this video!
I am quite new to making these kinds of videos so if you like to see me talk about something specific, or have any feedback - please let me know!
Thank you so much again, for leaving a comment and I wish you a great day ahead my friend :)

Blade of Darkness has, overall, a better dynamic than the Dark Souls games. In my admittedly biased opinion. It's nowhere near as fluid or as polished - being in many ways the archetype of the genre - but I think Soulsborne punishes the player too much. Also, strangely enough, while I don't like combos - I much prefer the more familiar system now where any ability can just be activated using a particular button - there is something about mastering a particular set of key sequences to unleash the really powerful stuff.

I haven't played Blade of darkness before but after reading your comment I might just give it a try!
I also completely agree with you that combo systems may end up being just for style and lack much practical use in combat. A good example of this is Kingdom Come Deliverance, where combos are cool and satisfying to pull off, but are pretty impractical when you can just master strike (block + hit) at the same time, or just parry and hit a basic attack in a fraction of the time.
thanks so much for the comment my friend, means a lot! Wishing you a great weekend ahead :)

Weird that you find Dragon's Dogma's combat so satisfying and polished when in my experience it's just very very average in all aspects. I wonder why there is such a discrepancy in our opinions. I think the biggest flaw in it's combat is the lack of responisviness that comes from the animations taking long to complete and stripping away control from the player.
