Why Are People So Passionate About TF2?

  • Team Fortress 2 has been around for almost as long as I have, and I’ve had some of my best memories playing this 20-year-old game. Over the past few months, the game has come under attack from a massive swarm of botters and hackers - making TF2 borderline unplayable for most casual players. This has been happening for a while now and the community has grown sick and tired of Valve’s inaction in solving the issue. This has culminated in the #SaveTF2 or #FixTF2 movement which kickstarted on the 3rd of June. From then till now, over 330 thousand players from all around the globe have thrown their support behind TF2 and collectively demanded that Valve do something about TF2’s bot crisis.
Seeing so many people sign the petition and share their stories on RUclips, I feel like I had to share my perspective as well. Beyond sharing my experience with TF2, I also attempt to share why I’m so passionate about TF2 and potentially shed some light on why so many worldwide feel the same way as I do about a 20-year-old game with dancing cartoon characters and hats.
Thankfully - Valve seems to have listened to the overwhelming voices of the TF2 Community and implemented a massive ban wave just a few days back. This has done wonders for the Casual TF2 experience, as I have not run into a single bot across 5 casual games. While it’s a great start and has averted the crisis of TF2 becoming unplayable, TF2 desperately needs support, updates and new content to stay relevant. It is my wish that TF2 stays alive for years to come, but this all depends on Valve and all we can do is wait and see how things pan out. Thanks for watching!

I don't think TF2 will ever die but support will eventually stop but it should be fine since there would be community servers still

support for the software will be dropped, yes, but tf2 is a gold mine for valve. they will probably keep going with the series, in any way possible.

buy the way a game with such History surviving 12 years against OW rivalry end Bots end cheaters is absolutely insane. 👍👍

TF2 has a bigger problem than Valve's neglect: it lost its identity a long time ago, shortly after it went free-to-play and got a large influx of new players who didn't really care about or like its artstyle and brand of humor, and it's now filled with horrendously out of place and generic cosmetics. The competitve scene demanding balance changes on weapons they had no intentions to allow in competitive matches anyway, and for reasons that can easily be countered with "get good" (seriously, their complaints were mainly that they didn't want to learn to play with and against these weapons) also ruined fun parts of the game for casual players.
There is no unified TF2 community anymore, it's all a bunch of warring factions trying to pull the game in different directions and turn it into something it isn't, and they already succeeded at the latter.

i can actually also remember my first game(s) of tf2. the very first time i tried it i was at a friend's house and he was playing it on his xbox, and he let me try after he died. we were defending the 2nd point of the 2nd stage of dustbowl, i picked spy and left spawn, then died immediately because they were capping and spawncamping us.
the first time i tried on my own was on my own steam account with an old laptop, i picked soldier because he was the first class introduced in the tutorial. it was frontier and i was on offense, i left spawn and saw another soldier on our team get a sick airshot so i stood there like "woah holy shit," then i got sniped because i was standing still.
i think the fact that we can remember this far back in our experiences with tf2 (these were at least a decade ago for me, might've been longer for you) is a testament to how both memorable and engaging the game is. valve really struck gold with tf2 and i don't think there's going to be anything like it ever again, so seeing it be neglected over the years has been saddening. i hope the recent anti-bot measures are a sign of things changing for the better long-term, but im not about to get my hopes up because it's valve.

Yeah there is hope at the end of the tunnel for sure, Valve has already banned most of the bots which is great! But TF2 realistically needs more than that to be able to survive IMHO

For me, just game maintenance & bug patches are enough. It's clear that TF2 is in a "final" state where we will likely not (or rarely) see new content in the foreseeable future. Besides the community has been given tool to both host & mod TF2 to both modify & add new weapons & other content they see fit, UNLIKE SOME GAMES.

As Asian tf2 player, this resonates with me. tf2 soul was killed by Valve in MYM. Quickplay literally allowed many Asian servers to have players. i remember even playing hydro or nightfall here. After MYM dropped. not only all of them died but the Asia tf2 community sinked. i see the same people in casual. and it's rare to find a Vet like me. the bots and Valve neglect is a byproduct of MYM and matchmaking. We need quick play back, we need them to undo the many bad nerfs post MYM etc...

@@b0rk125 i miss the micro community in Valve server with people i played with for 3h in the same server. it was just plug and play.
I honestly don't want more for tf2 other then undoing the MYM nerfs and getting quickplay back. so even if they kill Valve servers. Quick Play would allow joining community server easier.
