F2P's are the future of a game like tf2. Make fun of them all you want, but their fresh and new journey in tf2 is the reason tf2 has lasted for as long as it has for the most part. We were all f2ps and/or new at one point. They remind you the freshness of being new, and yeah, tf2 is a game, it's suppose to be fun.
F2P's are the heart and soul of the game, sure the bigger part of the community is also important but they do not care about the F2P's it's why I've always disliked the hate for random crits those crits are there so the little f2p gets a fun moment and levels the playing field.
This is incorrect. Team Fortress' gameplay, design philosophy and reputation is what makes it stand the test of time. It wasnt f2p for 4 years of its life and people put money on the table so f2ps could download the game and assume they should have major sway in the discussion with no respect to the history. I am a f2p and the numbers on servers went up, and then down. So many people were feeling ripped off and dissapointed, because they were. It wasnt hats or cartoonish art style, its that an experience made by adults for adults got taken over by lying children, then later down the line bots. F2p def get people coming, but its really odd when people show up to a party your throwing and tell you how your party sucks because it isnt theirs.

I never bought anything else in the Mann Co. store and I'm definitely not restricted from any in game functionality be it voice chat or backpack extensions.
as a f2p it's kinda sad that i can't talk or call a medic i already died many times because of it plus i can't even say that there's a spy behind the people making the spy killing almost every single person of my time on the front line
In most servers in general, there are no bots. Their kicked almost instantly. They only infest the games like Harvest and whatnot. They dont leak into Payload since they get kicked instantly.
This reminds me of a story when I started playing tf2. As a free to play and new to playing on pc I didn’t know how to give a banana to teammates. So when one day I was playing heavy, and a burning spy came up to me ask for my banana. I accidentally ate it in front of him, needless to say he died. I now live with the guilt of letting a man die, and I couldnt say anything to stop it.
did he say anything afterwards?,if not he may have had a good laugh, you're playing a game that players often killbinds just for fun and laugh after all.
As someone who prided himself on being a F2P for several years and unfortunately made the tough decision after these updates to give in and buy a key, I would like to thank you for speaking up for us. Free-to-Plays are the blood of the TF2 community, and to see them stepped upon like this has been hard. You're right, Casual just doesn't feel right without their voices.
Even at the time I considerd it baffeling. If you’re even slightly familliar with these kinds of groups you would have predicted they would find a way to bypass the restriction (i’m actually suprised how long it took them). And the main problem with bots wasn’t even the voice/text chat. You could simply mute them or disable chat. The main problem was them making the game downright unplayable with hacks.
As a relatively new player, voice chat has typically felt like it's only used by the more skilled players who had usually joined as a team, and there's very little interaction between every type of player and I think that having some of that would be very interesting
As an *F2P* myself with currently *818,8 Hours* In the Game, playing *Team Fortress 2* while NOT being able to communicate really Is.. *Lifeless,* but you'll get *used* to It.. eventually.. But I also have to get used to It, that I'll get kicked because: *"I didn't warned my Teammates because of Spies; I didn't warned my Teammates because an Enemy Übercharge coming at them.. And, and, and.."*
Thats the least of your problems in pubs, the worst thing isnt being able to defend yourself in chat when somebody is calling a vote kick to you because everybody thinks you're cheating
I have *140* hours in TF2 and stopped being *F2P* this week. Ironically I got the *Gibus* only yesterday, completely on *accident* while playing with my *friend* I introduced to *TF2* last month who started with a *premium account*. I stopped being *f2p* because he gave me a steam gift card *for introducing* him to *TF2* . It is *hard* and it always sucks getting *kicked* by a bot with no way to *defend* myself. I actually started when *bots* could still impersonate *players* and thought I was getting *kicked* in my 5th or 6th *match*, but it was a *bot*. I relate to *you.* But why are you typing like *this?*
Same :/ I am not f2p but my voicechat doesn't work nor in gmod nor in tf2 it's frustrating. Besides I am too busy on trying to not get killed in 5 seconds to warn anyone it's demoralizing.
as a f2p, its just suffering, i cant call for a medic, cant call out for a spy, cant chat with others, not even being able to say thanks for someone gifting me a hat. i was at 20 hp, I reached out to a medkit just for it to get taken by a teammate, i tried calling for a medic but... i simply couldnt. -\_(0_0)_/-
I’ve honestly gotten used to it, probably because I main medic and never really called for one in the first place due to normally being the only one. I don’t even remember the chat keybinds anymore. Still waiting for my voice back.
As a f2p who only started playing on july of last year but loves the game a lot and is always trying to get better, thanks for making this video. Not being able to mess around with other people with voice commands or just compliment a good player for hitting a a good shot kinda sucks, I wish we could at least use voice commands because being able to go from fighting to being friendly and spamming voice commands in the blink of an eye is one of the main things that make this game so special to me, but as it is now I guess I'll just stick to playing on community servers most of the time.
It because most p2p players don’t notice that f2ps aren’t talking, I honestly forgot about the changes until this video and it’s so unfortunate because more people should definitely be up in arms about this
i started playing tf2 on my laptop during lockdown in 2020 and i remember fondly the day i said "man i cant talk in casual so imma go in one of these "community servers" lets see how it goes" after a while i realized that there are a lot of friendly people on there i said, i wonder if casual has gotten better. It didn't, but after considering for an hour or so i decided to spend 5 dollars on tf2. Since trading was like speaking an ancient tongue i spent it on weapon i didnt have. i remember booting up casual after a long time i got destroyed but i could talk and joke around, at the time i had 500 hours. the pure joy of being able to talk with my team was unforgettable. as sad as it is now i cant really see valve reverting that update, hopes are up but chances are fading if any f2ps are reading this: stay strong.
As a F2P, I almost never play on casual specifically _because_ of the lack of voice communication. As for voice chat being an advantage, I'll say this: there were matches where if I'd had voice chat we wouldn't have lost, for example, I knew that two enemy medics had uber and kritz between them, and heard them call out that they were fully charged, but I couldn't tell the team, and could only watch as they uber and kritz a demo, wiping out the entire team, and losing us the final point.
someone needs to make a website/forum for F2P's to share their stories instead of just pouring whatever happened and couldnt say anything about it i know if i said as a f2p (insert some story) back when i was a newbie during 2022 id be getting roasted
As someone who stopped being f2p like 6 days ago, it's definitely rough. And until last Smissmas my backpack was completely filled all the time and I didn't even have half the weapons Ironically, I finally got the Gibus yesterday.
I started playing tf2 around mid/late 2022. And my very first game ever had 3 or 4 aimbotting snipers on the enemy team, camping our spawn. I was on call with my boyfriend, who convinced me to try the game, so I could communicate with him. But I was completely cut off from the rest of the lobby. It was a little bit before Halloween that I ended up buying a cosmetic set of about $15, making me no longer f2p. And as soon as I was able to actually communicate with my team, i got so much better at it so much faster. I can tell you from my own experience that communication not being available for f2p's definitely does make the game pay to win. I get voice chat and text chat being made unavailable, but at the very least everyone should be given access to the voice commands. That's the bare fucking minimum that valve should've fixed ages ago. But they just don't care. We were reminded of that already when they tried to gaslight us about the update this summer.
Well for me I was playing TF2 Just Right at December of 2022 before new year of 2023 because of...it may wried bit i just open my first steam account that Time untill now i am 17 and i just have Stema accout that make really hype because all of my life i just stick with Roblox as i watch alot of TF2 through Meet team SFM and etc also i even watch Knowledge Video for play in game and untill today i still F2p because well my Country now Economy Problem that affect to my Family bussiness really hard also i don't wanna to get Mother Dad Money to buy anything like Generic Thai Kid [even i was pick Parent Money to buy snack (this bad behave don't follow this behave)]
Also, being prevented from using the chat makes it impossible to prove you're not a bot in casual. Just got kicked by a cheater after I kicked what I presume being one of their bots.
Yehz. Anyone who plays medic can drastically increase your teams chances of winning Considering that they dont suffer Doesnt matter if they suck, as long as they press 2 and M1 on people.
Fun fact: The TF2 premium doesn't actually give you the ability to communicate. I learned this because I got gifted it from a friend and it still wouldn't let me chat. Though I guess you could sell it for keys and pay for it.
I remember getting my Upgrade to Premium thank to a friend I meet in a TF2 match, so I can do a few thing in the crafting system. Even getting the damm thing is also pretty hard back then because my account back then was restricted of even adding friend so wasn't able to trade but I able to bypass it by click and install dota 2 then I was able to add friend for some unknown reason that work and I traded for the item.
I don't know, but after the June 23, 2011 Uber update, everyone said it's like yesterday: they got it right from making the game free. the other side: they made a mistake making the game free. I want my $20 back. They said words like. At that time, the Summer Month of 2011 was the 23rd of June.
Bro, you got a free hat, how is that not worth 20 bucks? (This is a joke) But seriously, do you think the game would still be as popular as is currently is if it wasn't f2p?
Yeah to be fair I personally believe the F2P account restrictions were made to hit 2 birds with one stone The first bird being the Bots spamming the Text Chat and Voice Chat while the secondary bird being the players who haven't payed valve money to play their free to play videogame I feel like it's obvious Valve restricted genuine F2Ps because they want them to spend money
I started playing in 2015 I think. After years of being away from the game, and wanting to play after seeing a resurgence of RUclips content for it, I booted it up again. Could you believe my surprise when I would die multiple times after not being able to call for medic? All I wanted was to use voice commands but I couldn't even do that. Killed the mood so badly with the addition of the bots that I just stopped playing entirely. I don't care if they add more updates or more hats or more things to pay for. Those things were never the reason I played anyway. Thank you for making this video @UnusualSandwich. I knew instantly what this video was about before clicking it and I am glad someone is actually talking about how big of a change this was for little to no benefit for the initial problem.
As a f2p, the fact I can't even call for medic just makes me annoyed. It's nice when I can somehow communicate with people sometimes without actually chatting. I remember this guy who was using voice chat communicating with me (i was a medic) and I remember him being so happy with me when me and him carried each other to victory. Please Valve just give us voice chat :(
The tragic spy death at 8:38 -ish is SENDING me Fantastic video by the way. I admit, I don't feel I've put enough thought into the f2p chat restrictions as of late simply because i often switch voice chat off or spend most of my time in community servers or on MvM with mostly premium players. I'd forgotten the severity of it all. It seriously sucks that f2p's both long term and new to the game had to be punished because of bot hosts. I think a proper chat filter like you suggested would have been perfect. No clue what it would take to implement one though.
As I Free to player I can confirm this guy is a hero for Us Free to play players and its really hard to play as we cant chat or voice chat or even voice command but this is video is really good for you guys to tell valve to give free to play players voice chat or Text chat #SaveTF2F2P Players
It's pure incompetence on Valve's part. Instead of fixing the root of the problems, they fight the symptoms. I highly doubt that they kept these awful decisions for financial profits since the game itself is earning them mere pocket change. They can't be bothered to sink in any time or effort into a game that they themselves view as a burden by now.
@@trickstabber8117 You didn't answer their question... it is like saying you'll cure world hunger by having people eat food. Okay but how do you produce the food and transport it? How do you improve anti-cheat? Bots/Cheats are on user end and if forced to will be made more human like, like the top 5% of players. Do you just start banning everyone that is skilled? Then the bots drop to the new roof. It all dies. You will always hit a point where there is simply nothing you can do without giving TF2 dangerous access to your device... access to the point where if someone hacked TF2's servers they could have access to millions of computers. User side problems are a nightmare to fix because you just can't.
@@Buglin_Burger7878 All I can say is that other mulitplayer games manage just fine because having a ton of hackers running wild would be bad for reputation, hence the business. Valve has the ability to fix this within a month, the issue is that they don't care about the game. I can't blame them, however, this game came out in 2007 and is just a burden at this point. If the controversies around the hackers were bigger and Valve's reputation was at greater risk, they would most certainly respond more efficiently. Deep down, I believe they aren't too dissatisfied about their game being finally destroyed, it would save them time and money to completely shut it down at this point.
I've played this game for more than a decade, and I notice over these last few years of the games life in particular, how the sense of a cohesive community both INSIDE and outside the game feel eroded and diminished to a noticable degree. There are too many sub-metas within the overall meta that split players apart into these cliques that have very clear dividing lines, and not having that ability for free to play players to communicate with both intermediate or even pro players or interact in the game only keeps to segregate players rather than keep the community cohesive
I got into tf2 when I was searching up something on yt and accidentally clicked on meet the spy I watched it because I had recognized the characters especially scout, and then that’s all I wanted to do, watch videos about it. I begged and begged for so long that my parents would let me get it until they finally and started my f2p experience, and as any f2p did I looked up how to get my voice communications to work and I was devastated to find out f2ps can’t use voice communications unless they want to buy it
Just installed tf2, and since im a f2p, people thought i was a bot, and they kicked me right when i joined, even worse is that if you get called out, you can't talk to defend yourself so you basically have to accept the votekick. I dont even know how to killbind.
A further tinfoil hat point is that, because botters are spending money to make their bot accounts premium (probably from stolen credit cards), Valve now has a monetary incentive to NEVER fix the bot problem. I'd be willing to wager botting makes Valve more money than regular players ever could.
It would depend how much they're spending. If they're buying 3 cent cases then that doesn't make sense but if they bought keys I could very much see how this goes. No clue how DOTA works but if it has an in game market then this might be wrong because they just banned a bunch of cheaters.
I remember back when I was F2P I was playing sniper and someone accused me of cheating. I ended up getting kicked because I couldn't tell them something that very obviously proved this wasn't true. I had 0 kills.
i'm forever f2p, i have 1,000 hours on tf2 and i just unlocked chat like last month, i had tf2 for a long time but i didn't play alot before bc i had bad pc
The problem is that the voice chat and text chat spam isn’t a true problem. You can just put in an anti spam system. Both were just things they had access to without restriction. Now they have a choice. They don’t need to have the voice chat to ruin a server. They also don’t need to make every bot speak. Just one can be enough to F a server. Now Bot hosters just have to use their brains a little more.
When i was an f2p (after the update) lossing ability to talk in chat wasn't that bad, the worst thing was that you can't use voice lines and even scream "MEDICCC!!!" which was really bad and forced me to buy the cheapest Item in the store to get the premium.
Indeed, F2Player lives matter. They should retains only Voice Command in Casual Mode not entirely. But no Valve muted F2Players' whole communication in Casual Mode.
3:03 i remember in a max difficulty boot camp round there were 3 dudes who talked though voice chat then was an engineer who used the chat and me who had nothing to speak with. The medic told us that if needed crits to just ask him, i tried everything to caught his attention for "me need crits to put sticky trap plsss" didn't work and for some reason im still sad about it.
i love this video, because being a f2p is so painful whenever there's a spy owning the team and i can't call them out. valve actually stopped the bots, meaning that the chat feature might come back soonish for f2ps like myself.
As a f2p, I just realized that you can act get anything from the item drop, and I mean ANYTHING! Yesterday I got the pholg just from an item drop. Been a f2p for like a year.

I tried getting some of my friends to play tf2, my one friend literally wont play because he couldnt talk in chat or even call for medic. Its understandable that he wouldnt wanna drop money on a game he wasnt even sure he would like, and just wanted to try out, expecially when it was over-run with bots (at the time). Its 2024 now and the bots are basically completely gone, so i think its time to let free to plays talk once more.

Crazy to think ive been playing this game longer than a lot of people watching this video have been alive, i miss the old days without skins and crazy weapons
IMO TF2 is slightly pay to win, having more weapons to deal with situations makes it that. I don't like the default weapons are usually better argument, because that doesn't matter. Simply being given more options is enough to make it slightly pay to win. There's also extremely good items like the wrangler, jarate, mad milk. And the fact most stock melee weapons are useless.
Unlockables randomly drop approximately every fifteen minutes, many of them are obtainable through achievements and they cost peanuts anyway, so... Eh?
@@AliceLoverdrive I feel like every 15 minutes is a exaggeration but yeah that's true. Playing a decent amount will get you items fairly fast. It's more about the players who don't have these. luckily a lot of the best items like the Wrangler and Jarate are achievement drops. Also I remember needing to buy a backback as a f2p because I couldn't hold any more weapons lol.
@@defaultface7273 I think it's beneficial for new players to only have access to stock, tbh, for several reasons: 1) So they aren't overwhelmed by the number of options (a decent amount of which are either just plain bad or demand more skill) 2) So the new weapons are exciting and fresh. If everything is unlocked from the start, there's way less incentive to experiment.

It's pure incompetence on Valve's part. Instead of fixing the root of the problems, they fight the symptoms. 1) So they aren't overwhelmed by the number of options (a decent amount of which are either just plain bad or demand more skill)
2) So the new weapons are exciting and fresh. If everything is unlocked from the start, there's way less incentive to experiment.
I'm a f2p and i hate the fact that i cant speak to people like i cant even socialize.
We honor you for speaking on our behalf, being a F2P myself, and here’s a sub. Hope you continue your mission!
2:23 Funny info and Real fact: o 520 and 518 Success is exactly the same for 6-8 Years. Valve never added new achievements again.
F2p rights!
p2w: "haha cosmetics go brrr"
f2p: "cant talk.mewing atm"
Atleast we can do funny killbinds and talk in community servers
But i really want f2ps to be able to just voice command
F2P here, I’m mainly here just to drop a few stories about what I’ve seen during the few days I’ve played this game.
-On sawmill, there was an engie wearing a gnome hat and the other team kept running up to them and killbinding
-On 2fort, I was playing spy and tried to backstab an opposing sniper, who after I missed, laughed then killbinded(funniest shit i’ve seen)
I hope I’ll see some of you out there
8:06 no it's not going towards p2w; it's the fact bots are insanely difficult to deal with.
