This is just gorgeous. The head is a masterclass in the essence of jazz mastery; just add some notes and leave out others

Wish we had more of these types of Jazz clubs out here in the Central California area. But...he did come out this way a few years back and was a great show.

      Hey William Murray1620,
We are lucky to have NYC only 2hrs away, and even luckier that top talent makes the effort to play a small upstate city.

Kudos, Gary, for sticking with your good old low-Bb horn as opposed to the advantages of a modern low-A bari. Looks like a vintage American King or Conn, maybe from the early 60’s? Beautiful, resonating music doesn’t always need to come from a $10,000 techno-wonder horn to truly touch the soul. From an old-timer fellow sax guy. 😊🎷

Love his use of space between phrases. It gives a beautiful contrast that makes his melodic phrasing stand out clear and clean.

My Man! Anyone know his mouthpiece on this?

    • @jamiemeansjamesmusic

Looks to be a vintage Berg Larsen. Knowing his playing and what he's used previously, a 115/1 or 115/2

I know for a fact that is a metal Yanagisawa. I wonder what the tip opening is and if it's been refaced.

@@LCohenSax interesting... He used to use a V16 B9, so this ones likely a 9 tip opening

    An old Conn horn.
Clunky, high-effort, ergonomically poor action, but a great sound. I wouldn't be surprised if Gary could crack walnuts with his left-hand pinky, from all the strength it needs to have.
