Thanks for this. I'm getting a code for the regulator on a Volvo xc90 and also getting hard starts, cranks over after few tries... Like 3 times... Swings then cuts off, swings and cuts off and then swings and cuts off ..ans eventually cranks over. There's also as explained, restriction in performance and laziness or lethargic throttle response. I've switched the fuel regulator but no change. Still to check the pressure control valve on the rail itself.
Great work Gerard! This is probably the most informative video on this problem that I've come across. I experienced a SCV failure back in 2016 and after shelling out $800 for the local specialist Diesel mechanic to fix it, I thought I'd have a crack at it myself this time. Mine failed again a couple of weeks ago and threw the same codes. $50 for a replacement SCV off ebay but I wouldn't exactly say they are easy to replace. Access is a nightmare (particularly the lower bolt) and if you accidentally drop a bolt or your Allen key it finds its way into the notch of the engine mount bracket and is completely unreachable (trust me! Don't let anything fall). I have exact same car (07 4JJ1) and this seems to be its only real weakness. Just clicked over 300,000.
Awesome job! I've research a ton on these valves and issues relating to low fuel rail pressure errors and no one explains HOW these valves can actually produce such errors. It's just as I suspected- mechanically hanging up.
How does the scouring ever occur at the area? Could contamination in the fuel cause this abrasion over time? Perhaps due to the switch of fuel from different filling stations?

I just finished watching your video. I am encountering the same problem with my car, Toyota Hilux D4D 3.0 ENGINE. At the moment it's parked the garage because the engine failure. It undergoes a diagnostic test, which revealed Low Fuel Pressure and Common Rail. The problem here was always there since we took it for its regular service at Toyota Garage. It stopped and this year it bounced back with force. Whilst driving,a light will flash and a rough idle started. This force me to drive off the road and switch off the engine. Now when I connect it to the car, (the car connector terminals read about 9.5 volts (which is correct I guess because I confirmed it from another video) But, the solenoid doesn’t open.. it keeps vibrating.. and the engine doesn’t start.. Now, I cut the isolating rubber ring on the old valve and connected it (basically bypassed it) and the engine started..(with low fuel economy but it runs) thus ruling out pump, filter issue.. I am not able to figure out if it is an ECM problem (maybe the voltage drops on load.. im not able to check on load voltage because the connector wraps around the entire connectors.. but when the connector is open, it shows 9.5 volts I would also like to add that since a few months the car was giving a fuel volume regulator control circuit range/performance P0002 error (but it used to go away on its own).. So again, should I get the ECM checked? Or it could be that the other used valve is faulty as well?
