The purple in Kilgrave’s veins is a reference to his physical appearance in the comics. His skin is solid purple, and his villain name is “The Purple Man.” Also, his plan for Jess to be desperately in love with him while he rejects her is what he did to her in the comics that gave her PTSD. He made her love him, and would force her to watch as her forced multiple women to sleep with him in front of her. He got off on torturing her, and watching her suffer. He is, hands down, one of the most evil villains in all of Marvel.
His show counterpart is more of a simp, but far more compelling of a character.
@@Lucifronz He`s not a simp. He is a delusional mind rapist and implied to be an actual rapist to Jessica and the other women as well!
@@Lucifronz A lot of that is David Tennant's performance, he was the perfect casting for that role.
@@Lucifronz he is scary af in series dude
*insert Fnaf joke*
David Tennant's delivery of "It's Patsy!" will always be hilarious to me. He's fantastically unhinged as Kilgrave.
The man has an impressively wide range of unhinged. From fun unhinged with The Doctor, all the way to scary unhinged with Killgrave.
@@Blackbaldrik And if you get the chance to watch Des, then there's the passive version of the scary unhinged.
@@Blackbaldrik I thought I would never unsee him as The Doctor, but MAN he fit into the role of killgrave like a glove.
Tenant is magnificent in every role he takes. Just amazing.
@@Blackbaldrik - DT and Olivia Colman in "Broadchurch" were both amazing. Love that show and their characters so much. It would make for amazing reactions, but would crush Natalie.
Someone had a fantastic description of Killgrave: "Killgrave is like if a date-r*pe drug was sentient and had the charisma of David Tenant"
Truly terrifying.
😳 . . . 🤣
I totally agree that Tennant as Kilgrave was one of the most terrifying villains I've ever seen in visual media. The fact that he is completely unaware of his immorality makes him so much more unpredictable and unnerving.
This.
Probably one of the best depictions of a Sociopath ever put on screen. He literally doesn't understand why what he does is wrong.
He completely lacks a moral compass.
Jessica Jones is such an underappreciated show, it was so fun to rewatch it with you. Can't wait for Daredevil season 2!
So true. In the praise of Daredevil, people forgot this show.
and The Punisher afterwards!
@@sandipanborthakur8637 people forgot The Punisher, too, for some reason. I sincerely don't know why Luke Cage is so praised, either. It's an ok show but Mike Colter is so bland compared to Mahershala Ali he almost disappears from the screen, and Cottonmouth is not even that exceptional of a villain, in my opinion.
@@fostena I think Punisher too is popular, maybe not as popular as Daredevil. But I love Punisher too. Mahershala Ali's acting was the only thing good about Cottonmouth. Cottonmouth as a character was not much, but his acting was really phenomenal for me.
overappreciated imo so many people like it and its so trash. all the netflix marvel shows are honestly. too slow and all the same. some variation of a strong guy/girl who can punchity punch punch their way through anyway. All of the shows are slow paced and drawn out they could tell the story in half the time and have a much more compelling story. Then we have a team up! "The punchers" oh wait defenders? its all just punching though lets be real
Jessica Jones is the near-epitome of a noir film done in a modern setting. I love that it got the sort-of love that it deserved.
Street Kings is a modern day noir film. It also has a really great cast which include Keanu Reeves, Chris Evans, Forrest Whitaker, and Hugh Laurie.
David Tennant did such a great job in this show. Really great actor. Can’t wait to see him again in 2023, in Doctor who
I wait for Good omens 2. season too.
@@DemeterMedi will there be? I hope so!
@@themudbloodjedi8390 yep, there will be, quite fresh news! I think I have read about it this week.
@@themudbloodjedi8390 Yes, it has already been filmed....
@@DemeterMedi Man, that's awesome! He's always been my favorite Doctor of the newer genereation. Though probably it had a lot to do with his interactions with Rose. I suppose this new run will depend on his companion.
JJ is one of my favorite PTSD shows because it doesn't start with and glamorize the initial assault or "crying in the shower" scene. We come into it when Jessica is already in the depths of the PTSD and the audience is able to immediately feel her pain.
I kind of want Natalie to watch some Doctor Who now just to see David Tennant playing such a different but incredible character. Also I think it would be fun to see someone react to who after watching JJ rather than the other way around
She might start off series 1 of Doctor Who's Revival with Christopher Eccleston
David Tennant had a short-run podcast called 'David Tennant Doeas A Podcast With' where he interviews people, and his chat with Ritter is great. Lots of interesting back and forth about their histories. Worth listening to that episode even if you don't care much about their other work.
Yep. His podcast is pretty good. He's done 2 seasons, and I hope he eventually gets around to doing a 3rd at some point.
his episode with Krysten almost broke my brain lol David with his scottish accent and Krysten actual high voice
@@ayaehab Sounds ace. Do you have a link please?
David Tennent is an absolutely phenomenal actor. Top 10 for me for sure! You should totally watch Luke Cage next! The first season is immaculate.
Ooof, not at all. No spoilers, but they made a decision midway through that just ruined it. The ending felt like power rangers.
@@user-jt1js5mr3f Yeah, I was loving it but I had to drag myself through the second half. And then with the next show chronologically being Iron Fist... oof. I stopped watching in the "correct order" after that.
@@user-jt1js5mr3f Spoiler;
No kidding.... They went from having an awesome villian played by an awesome actor to..... A comic book reject. Like a joke villian from One Punch Man. 🥲
@@user-jt1js5mr3f This is when the Netflix Marvel formula became obvious and didn't work. If ya can't do a single 13 ep story, stick to a strong 8.
@@thestairguy spoiler
Absolutely. Cottonmouth was incredible and engaging, meanwhile copperhead lacked the same intensity or charisma. Not to mention that awful suit
1. Jessica Jones is a damn good show that I can't bring myself to re-watch. It hits too close. I got to see it again through your reaction, so I owe you one.
2. Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage are shows that have their own tone, color, unique messages and themes. Daredevil talks about the fine line between heroes and monsters. Jessica Jones is all about broken people and abusive relationships. Luke Cage... well, you gotta see Luke Cage.
If not for Jessica Henwick's Colleen Wing you could almost skip Iron Fist. 😛 It has its moments, I guess.
@@christophercorbin9387 Could absolutely skip it. She does not make up for how bad Finn Jones's Danny Rand is.
Is he an oblivious 10 year old hippie who was frozen for the past 15 years or is he an adult who spent the majority of his life, and all his formative years, in a Buddhist monastery being trained by monks? Director: Nobody knows so he should play it as both but mostly the 10 year-old!
Only thing we are sure of is that he is the only person in the show who has never ever trained in martial arts.
@@curtisbme He was the last one to be cast, and because of this they were strapped for time.
Project Triangle: Good, fast, cheap. You can only pick two. Guess what Scott Buck (showrunner) is known for? Iron Fist, Dexter and Inhumans viewers know who he is. 🤬
@@curtisbme: I don't know if you stuck around, but IRON FIST's second season was much better than the first. Partially because it's so much more THE COLLEEN WING SHOW with Danny as sidekick. But they also did better on the fight choreography, and writing and acting in general.
It's stilll skippable, but not as meh as the first season.
@@NoHandleGrr From what I recall, he was better but in the second season, but not significantly so, especially with the martial arts, which highlights it wasn't just an issue of him being cast late. Just the wrong actor and wrong choices in how to portray the character.
But I did like most everything else in the show. Colleen Wing unquestionably made the show better, but you can't save it when the lead character was that bad. I mean you shouldn't be agreeing with Davos 100% that Danny doesn't deserve the Iron Fist.
"At least Kilgrave is gone!" That's the thing about Jessica's PTSD I don't ever think Kilgrave will ever truly be gone for her; without anything short of a complete mind wipe of her memories of Kilgrave I'm pretty sure he will live rent free in her mind for the remainder of Jessica's life.😔
Jessica Jones was such a cool series. Fun, exciting, terrifying and mind-blowing. Watching the show for the first time along with Nat was definitely one of the highlights of the year 😊
Ironically Daredevil at least in the comics is one of the few people immune to Kilgrave's hypnosis
25:11
Killgrave was so pitch perfect as an abusive romantic partner, it was very very hard for me to watch. So many of the things he says are things that were said to me. My partner didn’t kill people, but he traumatized a lot of us for life. Trust me, he’s not in love with Jessica. He’s not capable of love.
When I realized that Luke “forgave” Jessica because he was under control, it broke my heart!
I thought his character in Secret Smile was even more horrific...
David Tennant is the man, I've never been so fearful of villains in anything comic book related, TV, movies, the comics themselves but both he and Vincent over in Daredevil brought next level terror to the screen and were perfect counterbalances for Charlie and Krysten who brought it just as good. Four solid, well rounded characters from four different styles of good and bad.
Season 1 of Luke Cage is one of my favorite Netflix/Marvel shows. A lot of people didn't get it, but the setting of it, and the music, and the commentary on race in America is all spot on and beautiful.
S2 was my favorite of the Marvel Netflix shows. I feel like they had laid all the groundwork and really got to have fun with a story that juggled similar themes at their natural evolution with a better pacing/soundtrack, and villain storyline
The MCU has brought in the Netflix Daredevil and Kingpin. They were fan favorite castings. I hope we get to see Jessica and Luke on the big screen with the likes of the Avengers. Great reaction Nat.
If you would like to watch a series outside the MCU next. I would highly recommend ARCANE.
I know, the fact that it has something to do with League of Legends might be something that disqualifies it for someone that has never played the game, but I also never played it and still would say that Arcane is one of my absolute favorite shows I have ever watched.
So please do consider giving it a shot.
I've never played the game and likely never will. I might have gotten more subtext or felt somewhat more connected if I had but I still thought it was superb. The animation is stellar, and the story and acting is solid. Still can't believe that those fight scenes weren't mo-cap.
Never played the game but can’t second this enough. I want to see Natalie sob along to this masterpiece.
The sad thing about Killgrave, is that he never had a chance to have any sort of relationship with anyone. Everyone will always do what he says. No one will ever push back or say no to him. It's been this way since he was a kid. How could you learn empathy if no one can say no to you?
Well, here's the thing, picture young Peter Parker getting that power, he uses it for selfish reasons and Uncle Ben dies and he takes basically a vow of silence, only using this power "in the name of good". If that was Kilgrave then by this point he and Jessica might be partners in Alias Investigations or happily married.
That's kind of the difference between the hero and the villain.
Seeing the villain play the hero for a scene really had a big effect. It shows how people affect each other in massive ways, and if he had someone better in his life who knows what could have happened
Kilgrave's costume in the comics is purple, if you notice he always wears something purple...and the way he is portrayed here is *chef's kiss* perfect!
You should definitely watch the expanse. Best sci-fi series ever
Yeah I hear great things about that show. Thinking of starting that series myself.
@@GrayMoe For everyone I recommend this series to it comes with one tip. The show starts slow and you may find yourself bored or questioning why there are entire episodes of disconnected and seemingly exposition based story. It is building up to a payoff and that payoff is well worth it, but yea it takes awhile to get there. Just give the full Season 1 a try; you will know by the end of Season 1 if this is a show for you or not.
@@Kipagami I will never understand this take, the first episodes absolutely captivated me.
You definitely became invested and enjoyed this show.
You called out every character's name without hesitation.
I'm impressed.
"- I want you to know, i forgive you for everything, i'll say it everyday for as long you need to hear it
- you heard that?
- I wrote it, SURPRISE 😁"
Best interaction ever
I still absolutely love how they handled the foreshadowing in Episode 12 that Luke Cage was being controlled by Kilgrave. I remember when I first watched this episode, I noticed Luke behaving in an odd manner, but I initially dismissed it as just poor/inconsistent writing that episode.
First, you have the lengthy scene of Luke just casually shirtless while talking with Jessica. I thought "well, there doesn't seem to be any reason why Luke is shirtless for this full scene, but hey: nothing wrong with a little fan service." Then, you had the conversation where Luke forgave Jessica for killing Reva. That scene actually annoyed me when I first saw it. All I could think was "wait: I know Luke wasn't happy to learn that Jessica was mind controlled into killing Reva, but his biggest source of anger was Jessica keeping that fact a secret while they carried on a relationship, while he was actively investigating what happened, and that Jessica would have never told Luke if he wasn't about to kill to that bus driver. I mean, really: who wrote this episode?!?"
Turns out, I really should have given this show the benefit of the doubt: Luke was behaving out-of-character because Kilgrave was controlling his words and actions.
So much this! I remember watching and thinking "this is sweet but it feels a little forced and sudden". Then the reveal. Oooph. And so like Kilgrave, to torture two people at once.
The call to the editor to please include the puppies and the kittens ... great reactions to difficult content!
David Tennant is a top tier actor in the UK. He's been a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company and played lead characters. He also played one of the Doctors in the show Doctor Who. He's also stupidly funny irl.
Not as a reaction but I really hope you'll check out some of his other works someday. Broadchurch is also a very good show of his.
It's been a pleasure rewatching the show with you, Nat! I loved it!
I'm really excited to see what you'll think of the Luke Cage show once we eventually get to it
My favorite thing about this entire season let alone the finale is Jessica’s dynamic with Trish.
Also, it’s still hard for me to believe that Eka Darville started out as a Power Ranger. RPM is still one of the best seasons to date.
Love how they wrote kilgrave as a complicated villain without making him too empathetic if that makes sense? He felt like a real monster.
The fact that they managed to make him even SLIGHTLY empathetic for an episode, even after everything he did, was genius writing and scary accurate to how people can use our sympathy to mask their nature.
@@Ylyrra Never seen two people miss the point so much.
@@wyterabitt2149 Mighty bold of you to assume what I have and haven't missed. You've missed the point. No I'm not going to say what point, but you've missed one. Somewhere. Ooooh, look how clever I am.
Aka how villains are supposed to be written
I'm always reminded of the David Tennant interview where he was asked if he could describe Kilgrave in two words. "Mother. F-(picture of scarf)-er." Nailed it.
When Kilgrave made Jessica start sending him pictures, I wondered if he'd use them against her in some other way - through the lens of the show's rape metaphors, they seemed to be the "You can't be a rape victim because you looked happy this one time" line - and here he is using one of the pictures she sent him to target her.
I'd really like to see you react to Doctor Who some time.
Small detail that I both love and hate: Trish responds to the name "Patsy" when Kilgrave uses it as if it's her name, because she's internalized her abuse.
Both The Doctor and kilgrave are played by David Tennant
People stopping in the middle of the sidewalk is also one of my pet-peeves. I usually say to them "Excuse me, am I in your way?" and when they say "no" I'll reply with "Then get out of mine." lol
Do they follow up with a fu?
@@Dularr LOL. Usually. :)
david tennant is amazing in everything he does, and i thought kristin ritter was amazing as jessica. i know i watched all three seasons of this show, but honestly, i can't remember it now. it will be cool to watch the rest of the series with you...presuming you're going to watch the other two seasons.🖤👍
Punisher is the best Netflix show because of the emotionality and story
I really hope you watch all the series (yes, even Iron Fist). I understand it would take time, but I'd love to see you watch this little universe coming together.
I think you’d enjoy David Tennant (actor who played Killgrave) as the 10th Doctor (was “the Doctor” from 12/25/05-1/1/10)on ‘Doctor Who’.
FINALLY THANK U FOR FINISHING THIS
Even though I love Jessica Jones Please Please Please I want more David Tennant. He has got to come back as either Kilgrave or maybe another person in the MCU. He was so good as the Purple Man but man he is such a great actor. Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter have stayed friends well after this and the Defenders ended. Every time a photo is taken of them the rumor mills start. All of them were great actors.
Great reaction, as usual, Natalie! Your comment at the end that this was more noir detective/crime show than a superhero show is so true. That's how I convinced my dad (no fan of the superhero genre) to watch JJ, and he really liked it a lot. So much do that he watched all 3 sessons and then he watched Daredevil as well.
Really enjoyed watching your reactions for this show.
Absolutely love this series and enjoyed watching you watch it :)
Natalie is over here dissing the looks of David Tennant. That's it, now she needs to watch Doctor Who so she can eat those words.
Natalie... You HAVE TO WATCH LUKE CAGE!!! You have questions about him and they are answered in his first season. Plus it's such a great show. A different vibe, and so well done. The acting is unbelivable.
Don't skip it.
ITS FINALLY HEREEEEEE!!!! Honestly this has been one of my favorite shows to watch you react to!! Such a phenomenal impactful show too
Aww! Thank you for showing the puppies!
Killgrave's potential is so remarkable. Imagine he were a therapist, he could get people to litterally feel happy for 10h, to quit smoking, to turn their lives around, he could be an amazingly successful politician, but he chose to be selfish.
waited so long for this, excited to finish the season with you, nat!
Patsy is a contraction of Patricia, in the same way that Tricia and Trish are contractions of Patricia too, no?
Such a great reaction, had to watch again. Think you would really enjoy the comics too.
If it makes you feel any better, Luke and Jess are together in the comics and have a kid together. (They were also hunted down by the government when refusing to register as superbeings for selected service by the government, but at least they have each other.)
I love how the pups in the background are just chillin'. "Mom is screaming/crying again..." "yeah, she's funny that way"..
I was waiting for this!!
sticking to the release order is definitely the way to go. i recommend watching at least the first season of every show, as well as season 2 and 3 of daredevil because it's hands down the best show of them all and season 3 in particular is a masterpiece! looking forward to you covering ms marvel and she-hulk!
What a wonderful journey with you Natalie. Glad to have been part of it.
Thank you for the video
Would love for you to watch Doctor Who! 🥰🤩
I appreciate you putting kittens and puppies on screen 😊
Killgrave is one of the greatest villans ever. David Tennant did an amazing job. Jessica Jones is an awesome show, that really should have had more legs. I look forward to her coming back on Disney +
I really enjoy all of your reactions, and your analysis of the complexities in these shows is great.
I would love to see you react to Arcane. It’s an amazing show and there’s no need to know anything about LOL to watch it. (I certainly don’t)
Glad you enjoyed it! I KNEW it would be a favorite of yours.
Perfect reaction Natty
So glad you liked it. As always, thanks for sharing your reactions! They're pure Gold ;)
I can definitely understand not watching all of the Netflix Marvel Series as the quality also varies, but I would still suggest Season 2 of Daredevil, the Defenders and Daredevil Season 3. Especially the latter is probably the best thing Marvel has produced till today.
Absolutely. Defenders wasn't great, but it's necessary for DD3 which is phenomenal.
Now you gotta watch DD S2 now
This is my favorite marvel TV show they did a great job keeping it *fairly* grounded and I LOVE investigators ♥️ I'm so glad ppl are rewatching it!
Definitely dive into DD season 2 asap :) It's so good, introducing great new characters
I can not wait until you watch snow piercer!! I can literally watch it over n over and not get tired of it!
I definitely would love to see you watch the rest of DD and JJ.
She must watch the entire Defenders Saga in order.
@Raymond Marier why? Cuz of the narrative structure and references, why wouldn't she watch it in order?
"Patsy" and "Trish" are both nicknames for "Patricia".
yayyy can’t wait for the next marvel reaction
Yess! I'm so glad I didn't have to wait like 7 weeks! 😀😃🙂
Love the video!
It's the one year anniversary of an amazing show called Arcane, I think you'd thoroughly enjoy watching and reacting to it!
Fun Facts:
That superhero outfit with no straps that Trish wanted Jess to wear was actually her uniform in the comics. Her superhero name was "Jewel", if I remember correctly.
Jessica doesn't "fly", she does "Hulk jumps".
In all of Marvel comics, there are only 2 couples that got married and stayed married; Sue and Reed Richards, and Luke and Jessica. Luke and Jess have a daughter named Danielle, who was born with their strength. She goes on to become Captain America in the future. This is all just the comics, though. The Netflix shows told original stories about Luke and Jess.
Rosario Dawson's character is from the comics as well. She's known as "Night Nurse". She patches up a lot of superheroes after battles. She's also the main character that links all of the Netflix shows, except for Punisher. Marvel treated Punisher like a separate thing. Rosario said in an interview that she always wished that she could've appeared in the Punisher show. She's a massive comics/sci-fi/fantasy nerd in real life, which is why so many of her fans love her.
Edit: I forgot to mention, Trish's character is also a superhero in the comics, known as "Hellcat". She's close friends with She-Hulk, and is currently dating Tony Stark.
With regards to daredevil, Kilgrave made his first appearance in an early issue of daredevil as the purple man. Matt was able to resist his hypnotism through sheer force of will.
Hope you'll be watching the defenders soon
You should absolutely watch Broadchurch, it has David Tennant in. Fantastic series.
You could also start Doctor Who! Probably my favourite series ever.
"Trish" is actually called Patsy Walker (Patricia, "Trish) in the Marvel Comics. She actually started out in their teen/humor/romance comic way back in '44 (and mostly during the 50s) believe it or not. Decades later Marvel decided to transport her into the superhero line, and then gave her a super powered suit as the Hellcat (she got her costume from another character, simply called the Cat). Its a pretty wild and intricate ride.
These Netflix productions of Jessica Jones and Daredevil are the best Marvel stories put on screen in terms of real story, casting/character-development, and quality. So much to say about Tennant, but many are talking about him here. But, Rebecca DeMornay, too? Case-in-point perfect casting for that role.
I wish that when he had gained his full power that his skin had turned completely purple. Because in the comics, his villian name is the purple man and his skin is actually the colour purple so that would have been cool for the writers to include that as him gaining his full power and becoming the purple man.
I saw an interview with Krysten Ritter and she absolutely lit up when talking about working with David Tennant. Said first of all, he is the nicest guy imaginable & second...he's the only actor she literally froze because she was so engrossed with his "transformation" at the drop of a hat. (And she had never seen Doctor Who & had no idea who he was at first...LOL)
David Tennant did an incredible job playing the Purple Man. What makes him compelling is that at his core, he is an addict. Not to drugs, but to power and control. When he doesn't have it, he is in a full panic doing anything he can to try to get the power back. When he "lost" Jessica, it's like a drug addict going through withdrawal symptoms. He doesn't care what he has to do or who he has to hurt to get her back. He's not a sympathetic character as he's written for the show, but his messed up mind is a product of the environment he grew up in and his parents are partly to blame for that.
Ok, I will be completely honest...
I totally forgot that you are still reacting to that show because it's been so long since the last reaction xD
Let's gooooo
Hi Natalie hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤️
You really got me laughing with all the cute animals and fireworks! LOL X) Loved your reactions to this season. I'm a little sad to hear you might not watch more seasons of JJ because season 4 is coming out in June (and I'm stoked to watch it), but I get it. I've watched a very small percentage of all the Marvel stuff out there and I'm also a bit over it already too.
I also love true crime! One of my favorite mini-series on Netflix is Unbelievable. It's heartbreaking that anyone should ever have to go through such a terrible crime as rape, but it's also uplifting to know good cops like those who solved the case are out there and working hard on these types of crimes. It's more tragic than scary to watch, but I highly recommend it. I don't remember how many episodes there were (10 or less) but it ends with the case being solved so you know there's no more episodes ever coming. Lol. The acting in it is absolutely incredible! Stars Toni Collette (Heredity), so you know it's fantastic work. I'd love to see you react to it if you've not already seen it.
I love the intro to Jessica Jones so much
I loved season 1, and your reaction was great! I would love to see you react to Legion, the best marvel series made
Don't forget, you'll need to watch Daredevil Season 2 BEFORE The Defenders!
Totally agree with you about Malcom
Love this show so much.
Enjoying your reactions very much! Highly recommend watching "Westworld" from HBO
I'll back that. If there's a next season it will be at about 6 seasons, right? It runs about the same amount of time and episodes a marvel Netflix show does and it's an excellent show. It took me a few years to commit to watching it all but I don't regret it.
So nice to see so many puppies and kittens!!
Good work on the Red Panda Cameron!
When Jessica tells Luke that she can picture a future with him that's alluding to the fact that in the comics she and Luke are married and have a daughter. And they are my favorite married comic book couple.
Jessica Jones is easily my favorite Marvel show. Yes, Kilgrave is an amazing villain, but everyone role is excellent and it’s great how well the rest of the characters are explored in the next two seasons. I hope you continue watching. A lot of people don’t like seasons two and three. I’d be interested to see your take.
